After travelling through more than 34 European countries and staying in numerous hostels, this one stands out as by far the best.

This is a hidden gem. The rooms are very comfortable, and being able to have a solo room for this price is a superb value luxury.

I stayed here during my trip in Kyoto, I would definitely come back again! This place is really recommended!

The staff here is super duper kind. The whole place breaths the boutique hotel atmosphere. Beds were very good and rooms and furniture seemed new.

Review as a tourist. This restaurant seems like a popular spot for locals. They have really nice and friendly servers, and the food was decent and comforting after a cold day out.

Amazing place and service, very nice women helping you with the sukiyaki, lamb sukiyaki was amazing, very tasty and tender. Chicken curry and the japanese beef steak box were very tasty too.

We are 2 budget travellers and this is one of the cheapest non-hostel accomodation we can find that is still centrally located.

A really nice place to stay.
Basic room with a futon mattress on the floor which might not be to everyone's liking but very comfortable and everything I needed.

The stay was nice. Showers were clean and there was free coffee. The traditional beds were oke for a couple of days, but not for a week. I was looking forward to a place with curtains and a good bed.

We stayed for 6 nights and loved it. Very helpful, friendly staff, great location and well equipped kitchen with free coffee you can make in individual drip. Amazing hot water for showers.

Nice chill place to stay in a very convenient location. You're really close to the station and there are a lot of conbinis around.

Conveniently located just a short 5-7 min walk from Kyoto station (There is a subway connecting the entire stretch — helps in case it rains). The hostel is clean and nice.

I think this is the only hotel-like environment hostel from all the hostel I went. Super friendly and warm staff that helps you whatever problems you might have.

We stayed 4 nights at Sui hostel and we had a lovely stay. Once we entered, there were warm lights, soft music with incense! Amazing!

I was supposed to stay in another place that was terrible so I found Ryokan hostel last minute and it was FANTASTIC!

We really loved our time at the Guesthouse Kioto, the hosts are lovely and we got a fantastic japanese breakfast too, with slight variations on multiple days.

This place was exactly what we were looking for.

An amazing experience. The host is fantastic. Unfortunately, 5 stars is the maximum available notation but the place definitely deserves more.

Toni is an incredible host with excellent recommendations for the surrounding city of Kyoto. Kokonoe Machiya is a very beautifully restored Ryokan with gorgeous attention to detail.

It locates in a quiet neighborhood. The building is an authentic Japanese style wooden house. You can really see how Japanese lives in daily life. The staff is friendly and willing to help.

Great location. Very cute and authentic. Staff are very nice! Cafes and laundry around. They also have lots of board games and coffee and tea, and a map of Kyoto vegan food etc super helpful.

This is one of my favourite hostels that I've been to so far! The entire facility was very clean and the pods were spacious and well equipped.

Could not recommend this place enough! It was unbelievably clean, beautiful with natural airflow and stunning wood throughout.

This was such a lovely place to stay at! very clean and the staff was so sweet and helpful. The room was very beautifully decorated and clean (we stayed in the private room cabin).

Great place to stay overall. The hotel is easy to find and on the top floor of a high building which makes for a lovely view!

I absolutely loved loved my stay here. Was super peaceful and I love that you get your own space. Also there's a bath which was a blessing after a lot of travelling.

Shizuya is a beautiful hotel, I loved the cosy atmosphere starting from the lobby.
I also want to recognize the amazing staff who is very professional and nice.

Excellent accomodations within easy walking distance of Nijo Station. Do keep in mind that the Guest House is closed between noon and 5pm. The host, Tomi, is wonderful and very kind.

Tommy-san was very accommodating and always checked in to make sure everything is alright. Wish I could have stayed a few more nights but I’ll save that for another time.

The place is super close to alot of mainstream attractions. Easily walking or one train stop away from Kyoto main station.
The host is super knowledgeable on the Kyoto attractions and very helpful.

Really great place staff will accommodate your needs and are happy to chat. Rooms are good, showers are very warm cant really complain at all. Tv and computers in lobby aswell!

Felt super homey—like staying at a friend’s old Kyoto house.
Traditional vibes with tatami rooms and sliding doors, very chill.
Common area was cozy, met a few other travelers over tea.

Best place in town.

Stayed Oct 2024. A cute guesthouse with traditional tatami/futon setup. The house is only 2 rooms with a common area and kitchen.

I stayed here almost a week and it felt really homely. There are only two rooms, I had room B. At the entrance of my room there was a fish tank and 2 tanuki statues to greet me when I got back "home".

If you want to try the traditional Japanese style, you should give this place a try. We really recommend this place. We love our stay here. Also don't forget to try their porridge for breakfast.

If you want to experience an old Ryokan, this is the best place for you. Love how it feels homy.

Fantastic food and drink, only surpassed by the down home atmosphere enjoyed and attended by locals and tourists alike. Truly a hidden gem.

Nice little hostel on a traditional japanese house. Staff is super nice and friendly. Close to bus stop, about 20 min from Kyoto Station.

This place is awesome. I met so many friendly and interesting people here and the common room makes it easy to meet new people if solo traveling. The facilities are great abd the beds are comfy.
