A very atmospheric venue, with a Victorian era sort of theme to it. There isn't too much available in the suites themselves, the bathroom was cramped and there's no minibar. But the heating is good and you can end up feeling like you're in a sauna if you've got it set to high. Though despite the lack of amenities, the customer service is the main reason it's getting 4 stars. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and always ready for contact. Overall, it's not your average hotel and I think would be more suitable for tourists or people who want a historical flair to their night.

Great place to stay, rooms are well laid out, good size t. V, plenty of room. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The meals are amazing. Would greatly recommend staying there.

Excellent & very cute room. There was some construction, but they kept quiet until well after what I would have considered a good wake up time.

Very good hotel. Staying is the suite, two rooms, the house is up and down structure, the room on top, the kitchen living room toilet below. Very clean and comfortable, there is a special place for children to play in the vicinity.

I loved the old 19th century stone building and large heavy wooden doors and iron hinges and knockers. The room was pleasant and comfortable and spacious. I stayed in the Chaff room.

Liked the classic charm of the room, the cataract gorge is seconds away with great running/ walking a trek. A good price for a good room.

Great Place for a couple of nights. Pub onsite. Clean, comfy bed.

Hotel stay was great. Restaurant experience was lovely, entertainment first night by a local was soothing. Architecture was really well done to recreate a historical building with atmosphere! Car parking out the back was a premium, office staff were friendly. Steps to room required a certain level of mobility… only lacking feature. Gardens and surrounds delightful. Showers worked well but window would not shut causing a draft. I did ask for a room with a view and received on looking over the Tamar River. I would go back again. :)

Clean and comfortable rooms in a great location. The bathrooms are a little small but they are laid out well. The staff were awesome.

We had a great day/night staying at Penny Royal. Very good old looking styles. Not far from the main street of Launceston. Apartments were clean. Would come again.

Currently at penny royal after a long day. Room and facilities are very nice but over priced. It is 10 pm and were very tired. Was not warned about the noise level! Something in the centrel part of the accommodation area. Loud music and people shouting and swearing. Then the up stairs room sounds like a bunch of elephants have moved in. Constant noise. As another review said bring ear plug Wish I'd seen that warning! Will be very tired with a long drive home in the morning. Very disappointed with this stay. Rooms small but clean and tidy, so one star for that at least.

Lovely old world charm without missing any modern amenities. Convict Wi-Fi a treat.

What a cool place this was to stay. When we arrived to our three bedroom apartment, we were amazed to see that this place has an old Convict Theme Park built directly behind it. We had no idea of this when we book and it came as a surprise to all of us. If we had known this, we would have stayed for two nights, not just one. The apartment was very clean and one of the best places we had stayed in during our trip across TAS from NSW. Whilst the actual apartment was amazing, the stairs to have to get to the actual door were a pain. We were travelling with friends and two children, so trying to lug suitcases, baby cots and the like up stairs became a bit of a pain. The Wi-Fi did not work and we had to call some tech guy, who tried to troubleshoot the issues with us, however was unable to fix it. Regardless, great place to stay and would stay here again if I came back! Some advice, the Council Rangers will be all over you if you dont place your parking pass on the dash of the vehicle. They were at the parking lot morning and afternoon infringing non compliance.

Overall, nice looking bar. Not enough air conditioning for the space though on a hot night. Last drinks were called after the first round at 9 30pm. Not that it's unusual for Launceston but really could have stayed a lot longer.

Beautiful, unique rooms. Poor amenities in the off season, everything is closed. Friendly, chatty staff, great food and beer.

Very good looking old style, very spacious rooms, friendly staff. Parking available. Launceston is small enough that walking to attractions work well. Would come here again.

Clean, warm and homely feel to this good value motel. Lovely ambience. Light did creep through wooden venetian blinds in early morning (stayed in The Brewery room) and entertainment in bar across carpark was a little loud til late.

What a disappointment. Was last here 12yrs ago and enjoyed my stay. Returning was a shock. My children were so hoping to enter the windmill, but it is now closed to the public. A great attraction deteriorating through lack of upkeep. Bathrooms have been given a modern makeover that doesn’t fit the theme of the complex. Couldn’t use toilet after shower as so much water flooded onto floor. With only one shower mat to clean up, had to ring out multiple times after each shower. Paying $160 dollars a night and having to do that, just wasn’t on. Shower gel dispensers was empty. Had to use our own soap, but no soap holder to place it on. Mattress on main bed was so over used the convicts at Port Arthur Would of had a more comfortable sleep. Complained the next morning and relocated to different apartment. Again shower saturated the mat. Thankfully not as bad. Forget trying to go modern. Keep the bathrooms in character with the era of the building. What wrong with a shower screen door? They work!

Room was very new and very clean. Hotel was an interesting mix of motel and theme park but we liked it. Very central (a short walk to everything in Launceston). Would stay again.

Had a room book in via an agent who failed to mention we were travelling with my wife's elderly parents. The room we had booked had stairs leading to the room and more stairs to toilet & bathroom. Manager & staff were very empathetic to our situation & put my inlaws into another room. Both rooms were very clean & comfortable. Thanks for managing our stay so professionally and our stay enjoyable.

Great accomodation, clean, tidy, roomy. Good price for 3 adults. Access to adventure area allowed somewhere to escape gor coffee and ice cream. Good parking close to city.

Just had the lamb ribs. For 30 bucks I would expect more than an entree sized serving of half a dozen deep fried ribs with a miniscule amount of meat on them. Salad was nothing more than a free leaves of rocket and a couple of strands of carrot and yellow capsicum. I have just ordered the lamb shank ass I was still extremely hungry, the lamb shank is massive and absolutely delicious. Pretty poor when you need to order a second main due to the first being so small and ordinary. Ps, I also ordered pepper sauce on the side worth the ribs, I'm still waiting :/

When I chose my hotels I always like good quality amenities such a shampoo, toilet paper, coffee, tea etc and Penny Royal always provide with the best quality every time I stay whilst I'm on business. Nice historic motel with charm as well as large good size rooms, close to centre of city. Be aware however stairs are involved to get to most rooms and car parking is away from your room. There is however a short term parking area to load and unload bags.

Recently stayed for one night in a 2-bedroom apartment. Friendly and helpful reception staff. Apartment was perfect for our brief stay — quiet, clean, light and with good heating; and easily accessed via the shuttle bus from Launceston airport. Excellent location for visiting historic Hobart and Cataract Gorge.

Great location. Comfortable beds. Rooms clean and well stocked. Everything is modern and lovely. Only down, which I will not mark down for, is the water saving shower head is very temperamental. It does not give consistent heat, scalding one sec, then freezing cold the next. Not enjoyable after a long day of being out in the cold.

My partner and I had a fantastic stay at this accommodation. The check-in experience was excellent, Donna was efficient and friendly providing maps and restaurant list for the area as we were new. Upon coming up to our quaint little room we were greeted with a cute gift and card for our anniversary. Bed was comfy as and not just two twins pushed together as some accommodation is know to do. Shower was hot and high pressure, just what was needed after a long day touring the local area. Accommodation is walking distance to three of the top restaurants in Launceston. Overall very impressed with our short stay, and for the price we would for sure stay again.

The rooms are large, the bedding is good and the shower is fun (it tells us how much one water console)

Very comfortable place to stay, valuable. The only issue is car park is alwsys full at night.

We had an excellent experience here: the price was very fair, the room very well-equipped including fast & free internet (which is sadly not standard in Tasmania as of right now). Despite some constructions in the area, the hotel was in perfect conditions and we loved our stay.

2 bedroom unit is ok. Clean and comfortable. Great kids activities in the attraction. Bit weird booking in down the road but receptionist could not have been more helpful.

Reasonably quiet and comfortable, nice but small bathroom. I was unimpressed with the attitude of the receptionist who was quite snappy and abrupt when I arrived and when I enquired about the Wi-Fi which never registered any data during my trip, dispite that I called up to be given a refreshment of the daily usage. Also when we put the make up our room tag on the door, when we returned they had only replaced one dirty towel and did not supply more milk in the fridge. Otherwise it was a nice stay, we enjoyed the tavern below and the bar staff were exceptionally friendly.

We had a wonderful time in Launceston staying at Penny Royal Hotel. Staff were fantastic and very helpful. Even though construction was going on, it was due to finish in a fortnight and future guests will benefit, so all in all, fantastic. We stayed in the most wonderful apartment, (the apartment had a special name Sargent … something … Delion or something similar, (might have mixed that up a bit, but I am sure it must be something important, he must have been employed doing some very special work of some sort, anyway it was apartment number 343, ask for that apartment, it is just the best) … all the apartments had special names, quite quaint and special to think we were living in a "special" apartment. Anyway, we enjoyed a beautiful balcony soaking up the afternoon sun, the magnificent cliffs just right there within touching distance (complete with a very cheeky possum) and a majestic waterfall right there against the cliff complete with lighting in the evening. The Cataract Gorge is just right there, with wonderful walks and you must to go Seaport only a few minutes walk across the road along the boardwalk for the café and restaurants. The river cruise is a must, either the short or extended cruise is fantastic. But you must go to the Cataract Gorge, do not miss out on this. Take your bathers for a swim in the river or the absolutely magnificent 50 mtr pool and toddlers pool. You must do the chair lift over the Gorge, do not miss out on this. Will come back again, anytime.

Comfortable, basic, clean accommodation. Air conditioning would be a great addition as the fan that was provided was insufficient. Our room location was a little noisy being close to the tavern.

Noisy, no air-con, reaaly poor renovations, for the same price we pad 149.00 per night could have stayed at the Charles, never again, oh and just to top it off the Wi-Fi is dial up speed.

A comfortable, quiet, and enjoyable stay. Excellent bathroom, though a bit small. Adjoining pub/bistro is expensive but good food; just 2min away is the Stillwater and Cataract on Patterson though, which are better by far if you have the money.

Great apartment. The best accommodation I've experienced. Two rooms kept parents and children happy. Kitchenette was great. Bed was nice and firm. The only drawback was the two flights of stairs to climb. Top location though. Right next to the Cataract Gorge.
