Avoid this hotel on St. Patrick's Day weekend! The adjacent Irish pub hosts a concert in the alley below, blasting music into my room and rendering it unusable from noon to midnight, both on Sat and Sun. There was no warning before booking, and hotel management is refusing even a partial refund or voucher in compensation! Terrible customer service! I'll only amend this review if management stops dragging its feet and compensates me fairly.

Close to locations in Chinatown and Union Square. Rooms individually decorated. Friendly staff.

Stayed for a night. Room was a treat. Colorful painting on the walls. Father in law got inspired to paint again. Bed was cozy and made me want to sleep more. Toilet as many have commented, are small. However, I would describe the place as cozy. Location is awesome. Edge of Chinatown. Hop on hop off bus stop is around the corner. Hotel staff is super warm and helpful. Breakfast choices are simple — bread, spread, coffee, cereal. Will come again if we get the chance.

Good cleaning, small but comfortable room (bad sink in room). Breakfast little varied but good (bagel toast edits fruit coffee)

Best thing about this place is super central location and mega helpful and friendly staff.

Hotel Des Arts is very well located right by the Dragons Gate. Easy to walk to a bunch of stuff, and there's a ramp nearby should you have a vehicle. The stay was uneventful, and the bed was reasonably comfy, if a bit worn. There was no air conditioning in our room, which we didn't know when we booked. There were cobwebs in the corners of the room, and the ice machine had a juice dispenser in top of it, which was leaking sticky nasty all over the machine. The staff was friendly, and just for an overnight, it was an okay stay. Most of the time we were outside enjoying the city anyway.

Great hotel with an abundance of character. Room was cosy, but had everything I needed. Super friendly staff. Very well located with plenty of transportation and dining options.

Clean rooms with everything we needed for our three night stay, great location in walking distance to lots of sites and great restaurants. Good value for money!

Ideal for traveling couples who want to stay in the heart of San Francisco without having to disburse a lot of money. It is located in the French Quarter of San Francisco, within walking distance of Union Square. It offers unique rooms with exclusive décor made by local artists and various services. In our stay we included the breakfast, perhaps one of its improvement points, for the little variety, although the little it had was good and was no bother for us.

Romantic hotel in the heart of the city. Rooms are small and old but that's what makes San Francisco charming. Just don't bring a lot of stuff.

The hotel is ideally located next to the dragon's gate. However, our room was really quiet. All the rooms and the hotel are decorated with different artworks, it looks amazing! I would definitely recommend to stay here!

Interesting artsy place to stay. Each room is decorated by a local artist and the halls are full of local art. There is a bar down stairs. It's a place to take a special person who wants a weekend away in the city if they like artsy place.

Forget your expectations of cookie cutter chain hotels. Hotel des Arts is a unique boutique experience. It was like staying in an immersive art installation. It may not be for everyone but it made my stay memorable. I will be telling stories about my room and hotel experience for some time. No one goes on a trip to watch TV in their room… but have a good cable TV would have helped the down time between city adventures. Refrigerator was of ample size but having a microwave in the room would have made heating up leftovers convenient.

Booked this hotel at the last minute after a horrible mixup with my Airbnb (host double-booked and I ended up with a stranger in my bedroom in the middle of the night). The booking (via Expedia) and check in was very smooth. The front desk stored my luggage for me because I was there hours before official check in time at 3pm and wanted to go out. The room was clean and well-maintained. The minus points for this hotel is that it's not all that quiet at night and the breakfast is pretty limited. It's in a bustling neighborhood so if you need good rest on a Friday or Saturday evening you might want to bring earplugs. San Francisco is an expensive city so for ~$180pn I suppose you can't expect too much. That said, if you're looking for a nice base to explore the city and you'll be up and about late anyway, the hotel is ideally located, has friendly and helpful staff, and is clean and comfy.

We really enjoyed our stay. The staff was pleasant, the manager (Celia) was experienced and nice. Room was super clean and very well decorated (decor). Great location too. The price is right and they offer room discounts when you return. We loved the art. It is all over the place — awesome!

I have stayed at this property a few times over the years and I just had a bad experience that will keep me from returning. First, they could not find our reservations and we waited for about 45 minutes until we were set up. Then, the room was semi-clean and it smelled weird… like urine and feet. I also saw roaches in the bathroom. The breakfast was minimal… and by the time I went downstairs it was being taken up — along with a snappy rude hostess questioning "what do you want… ". I called down and asked for a manager and haven't heard a PEEP yet. Poor customer service and deterioration of property standards. 2 stars is a gift.

There were problems with them missing the booking for one of the rooms we have booked. Fortunately they were able to resolve this quickly. Payment became an issue as they have not responded to an email from our office manager for a credit card authorisation form. The keyhole of the door to my room was no good. It requires a lot of fiddling around to eventually open the door. The breakfast is far below expectations considering the price for rooms and they should be aware of this as no one was having breakfast at all.

No AC, But Great artistic design, friendly atmosphere.

I stayed here in June 2013 it was a great hotel if you're a budget traveler and you're not one who desires a lot of amenities from the hotel. All the rooms are designed by different artists and mine was very subdue. The room I had was without a bathroom. There was a sink in room but the shower and toilet we're down the hall. This wasn't a deal breaker for me when booking since I've stayed at many hostels. There was never a wait to use the facilities and the entire hotel was very clean. The only thing I didn't like was there wasn't any air circulation in the room. I bought an oscillating fan from Walgreens down the block to help with this. Also my room's windows faced an alley that had significant noise from early morning delivery and trash trucks and there was late night noise from a bar or restaurant with loud music. Besides all of that I'd definitely stay here again. It was right across the street from China Town and I found it to be a good location.

The rooms are nices, and the ubicaton of the hotel its perfect, you can go by walking to lots of places, its very near to the Chinese area.

Me and the fiance have stayed here multiple times. Its a few stories tall, and only a small amount of rooms. You don't get that huge hotel feeling but that intimate one. It had the best views I think in the city. The bay, the bay bridge, the bustling Embroiderer and the Ferry Building. It's just an excellent place to feel like its just you two, even though there are a million things going on outside. The service is great and I'd stay here more often if I could afford it. The bar and restaurant "American" is excellent and convenient. I love it here. Hit it view of the bay style.

Great for young, free spirit and international tourists. Not so much for light sleepers but I gave this place " I am a fan 4 stars"

Our stay was for 7 days, completely satisfactory. To get to know San Francisco without spending on unnecessary luxuries is one of the best options for its location, just two streets from the metro Montgomery St. The main avenue Market St and at the entrance to Chinatown and to the prices of San Francisco is the best in relation to cost. A B&B not to return but to leave the things of the shopping mall. Although a little more expensive, but it is recommendable to rent a room with private bathroom, because there were friends who rented rooms with shared bathrooms in other hotels and it was a martyrdom. The staff was very friendly and resolved any issue we had. The surroundings, despite having to stray (as in every city), you could walk quiet in the evenings. The Cons that we found is that the lift is not served and our room was on the top floor; don't know how long it would have without the serve, is not suitable for people with different abilities. And the breakfast was always the same, never changed. When you next visit SF I will host here, if and when it serves the elevator hehe.

I was a bit shocked to find out our room had no bathroom. You have to use a shared one two large aisles away. I reckon most rooms do have their own normal bathrooms inside. Do confirm this before booking, because it sucks having to walk all that just go take a leak or a bath. Also worth mentioning that the building is very, very old. Although functional and up to code, some things are just so outdated and thus uncomfortable. For instance, the elevator should be in a museum, and it is a small battle to open and hold doors every time you'll need to use it. Same goes for windows in our room. The art is fine, but the rest of the decor and walls cannot hide their age, pretty much like some of the staff cannot hide their boredom. Still, location is great and the value is reasonable, but I'd still expect a little bit better.

It's really not that bad. Some of the staff are rather bizarre, some are very nice and helpful. The breakfast is just a bagel. The rooms are interesting and the location is brilliant. The low score is due to some truly awful experiences with the staff who, if I didn't have a sense of humour, could have easily ruined the stay.

We had a week here and there was nothing to fault. The rooms painted by local and international artists are awesome, clean and comfortable. Pay attention when you book as there are rooms with private bathrooms and smaller ones without. We had a larger room with a private bathroom and separate living room which was well suited to a longer stay.

Wonderful hotel with a great staff. During my stay this past weekend they were extremely helpful and met all of our needs. The room was comfy and it's great value for your money. The location is great, everything is nearby and bus routes are very easy to get to from this location. Great experience! I'll definitely be back.

Where else can you stay in a room painted by local artist? Yes the rooms are tiny but it's a great place if you are going to a concert or party and want a safe cheap but comfortable and nice place to crash. Friendly desk staff but lacking on the the "breakfast" buffet.

Nice place. I was convinced by the artistic side. Quiet with superb hygiene. The only downside is a little simple but it is not the most important. Very good location I recommend and I will leave I will reserve the stockings.

A very unique hotel well located in the financial district. A short walk to Union Square and Chinatown. Good clean and comfortable rooms. The complimentary breakfast is simple, with fresh bagels, juice and coffee. Would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in San Fransisco that are looking for a unique experience. All in all It's a great hotel but if any of you are looking to save some $$ then book it at SweetHotelDeals. Net. They usually have some pretty good deals on there.
