Stayed here for 5 nights over a labour day weekend. Everything was excellent from start to finish. It’s location makes it very central for getting around either on foot or public transport. Great for seeing the sights or shopping. The staff are friendly and very professional. The place was exceptionally clean with everything you could wish for provided in your room. The complementary wine, nuts, crisps and fruit were an excellent touch. Would not hesitate in returning.

Great, right in the center of union square that you can visit on foot. The hotel is chic and quiet. We had a stunning view of the neighborhood. The only catch, the price of parking at $68 a night. Fortunately, we found almost opposite a public parking lot for $30 for up to 24 hours. The stay was up to the hotel's performance. A nice step in our visit to California. Recommend it.

A beautiful hotel with very friendly, helpful staff, including the housekeeping staff, they all go out of their way to make your stay a very happy one. The rooms/suites are very comfortable and kept supplied daily with tea/coffee makings (although a small kettle and milk would be useful for making tea). All meals we had in the Daily Grill were top notch, very tasty, very well presented and enjoyable — we weren't rushed at all which was appreciated by us. We have stayed here twice now and have been extremely happy with the service we received. We look forward to returning sometime in the future. 5/5

One of the most pleasant hotel stays I've been to in years the staff was very friendly and welcoming. The wheelchair lift was out of order but they went out of there way to make sure my wife could get around in her wheelchair, the rooms were clean and cozy. I will stay here again on my next trip and recommend to family and friends visiting the area.

Location was great. And rooms for the most part were silent. You couldn’t hear street noise from your room. The cons it was old, the rooms could use some updates. Our ac in our room didn’t work so it was a hot humid feeling. The bed was rock hard. And the pillows were sooo thin. Also our shower didn’t drain so while you take a shower the tub fill up to your ankles very gross. Staff was great and I felt safe. Just from room and comfort it wasn’t great.

Well located within Union Square, the hotel is within walking distance from the BART station, bus and cable car stops. The front desk was very accommodating when we arrived at the hotel in the morning. They provided us options for rooms available before the standard 3 PM check in time. Our room wasn't available right away. We checked in after 3 PM, but we were pleasantly surprised to see a spacious 2 bedroom suite. Overall, a very nice hotel!

The location of this hotel was great. We were in walking distance to everything we had planned during our visit. The staff were super friendly. If it wasn't for the lady at the front desk (cannot remember her name) we would have been completely lost. She provided us with a map and gave us directions including bus routes to everywhere we were going. Although I have zero intentions of returning to San Fransisco or California, I would definitely stay here again if needed.

A good, clean central hotel about 20 yards from Union Square. The hotel is great for most things downtown although as with most of downtown San Francisco you need to keep your wits about you as there is a real mix of people, some of whom aren't quite so friendly. This does not reflect the quality of the hotel with its pool, gym and restaurant and close proximity to the theatres. The further up Geary you go (away from downtown) the cheaper the restaurants and eateries get which is always good to know.

We had an amazing stay at Handlery Union Square! The lobby and public areas are beautiful, the staff are fantastic, the room was perfect. The pool is amazing, wish we had spent more time at it. The food at the restaurant was delicious. The central location was so convenient. Would definitely stay here again.

Conveniently located in Union Square. The hotel rooms appear to have been recently updated. The decor is great! The bathroom is a little small. The hotel staff are very friendly and accommodating.

The hotel is nice but the area is not recommended to stop. By day there is no drama but at night ew pretty ugly.

A nice hotel centrally located and walking distance to the BART and trolly. Rooms are clean and some of nice city views. There's a heated swimming pool in the center of the courtyard. Fresh infused water available every morning in the lobby. Make sure to check out the Secret Art of Dr Seuss exhibit.

They stayed in the newly renovated rooms which are very spacious for a family of 4. Service with the front counter was exceptional. Ordered late room service to their room after their late arrival which they loved and arrived promptly. Hotel arranged Balloons and a gift for my nephew without any hesitation. Couldn't ask for better service.

We had 4 nights here last month. The hotel is very central for shop, trams, buses and sightseeing. We received very good service, staff could not have been more helpful and polite. The room was very nice, there was a safe, tea making facilities, Wi-Fi, TV and no local tax to pay. Breakfast was included in our trip and it was in the lovely restaurant attached to the hotel. There was a choice of 3 different options all very nice. The menu was very good there for evening meals as well. The hotel does have an outdoor swimming pool which is lovely after a long in the city. I would certainly choose this one again.

Four family members stayed in this hotel. Got a great deal from TravelZoo that included half off on parking rate. Love the location. Close to restaurants and shopping. Very accommodating and friendly staff. Nice to have a restaurant and bar on site, with Happy Hours. The room was typical. Yes, we'd stay here again.

I had a very pleasant stay. The room was clean and quiet, and the bed was comfortable. I am giving it 3 stars because the internet speed was ridiculously slow. A hotel in the heart of San Francisco surely should be able to do better.

Spectacular customer service! We called to request a balcony room and mentioned that it was my wife's birthday, and they said they would put a bottle of wine in our room for us. When we arrived at the Handlery, John Handlery himself greeted us and showed us to our room, where they put a bottle of wine along with a little basket of snacks in there for us. The room was great and we loved the balcony. The location is perfect, right across the street from Johnny Foley's Irish Pub which I highly recommend.

We like the location. The room and bathroom are nothing fancy but adequate. No fridge in the room. Exercise room is fine. Friendly. Good access to outlets and ports in the room.

Had a fantastic stay, myself and the wife stayed here for 5 nights on our honeymoon, we arrived to a welcome basket in our room, complimentary breakfast each morning that was not part of our package and a personal call from the hotel manager welcoming us to the city. I enjoyed chatting with the doormen each morning as they recommended many places to sightsee and places to eat. Would recommend a trip to the sauna after a long day of sighting.

We stayed for 2 nights, bed & breakfast. We were visiting San Francisco after arriving on a cruise. We selected the Handlery as we had stayed there once before & the location is ideal for exploring the city centre. It is easy to walk around & very close to shops, bars & restaurants. You can pick up sightseeing buses, cable cars & walk to China town. The room was a bit dated, but they were obviously doing some decorating in the public areas, as we saw workmen on other floors, so maybe in the near future it will look fresher. Otherwise, the room was a decent size, with tea & coffee making facilities, a bath/shower, a hairdryer & an ironing board & iron in the wardrobe. The b&b package we had included 3 choices for breakfast, either a cooked plate, Yogurt, muesli & fruit or a waffle & syrup. Otherwise there was a menu with lots of choices. The onsite restaurant was accessible via the hotel or from the street, & it also had a bar area. We were very happy with our choice.

Great service, great hotel. Some people complained about the size of the room but two of us shared a room with a queen sized bed and there was adequate space. If you are given the option, stay on the historic side! It has an awesome feel throughout the whole building. We stayed in a room with street view. There was some noise but nothing that was disturbing or woke us up. If I ever go back to San Francisco, I will definitely be staying here again!

I mean the place is clean and in a prime location but it is so old and dusty. I have allergies and the moment I walked into my room I honestly felt the age and lack of care to the room. A single paint job doesn't replace the ancient carpet and tiny restroom. Cracks and scratches are in every place you look. I suppose this would be your cup of tea, if you are into the rustic stuffy sort of things.

Hotel is located right next to Union Square, just several blocks from a BART station. Rooms were clean, but expect much smaller rooms than modern hotels. Empoyees were all extremely helpful and accommodating.

The location is particularly good, about a five-minute walk from the nearest Bart Station. The staff were particularly friendly, especially the two men at the gate. They were very warm and humorous when I asked them about the end of daylight saving time. The bed in the room is a little small, we check in at the front desk, the staff asked us that the bed is a little small need not choose a twin. So if you mind the size of the bed, you can ask for a double room. The facilities in the room are quite nice, the bathroom is large and there is a cloakroom. But there are not many toiletries in the bathroom. There is also a large swimming pool on site, although we did not use it when we checked in. Overall very satisfied, the location of the hotel is very good, close to the Union Square business district, very quiet at night, the room is also very hygienic and clean. Check-out is particularly convenient and fast, if you choose to pay by credit card at check-in, live and booked room service delivery service, you directly with the front desk said that the same card payment clearing is good, very convenient. Finally review the hotel's delivery service, in the evening just order a order (breakfast) order, and then hang outside the door. But the next morning, more than the scheduled time has not arrived when I called to inquire, and then the delivery staff came, about ten minutes late, this is not too satisfied.

Very small but clean rooms. Best deal is through booking apps, don't book directly unless you want to pay double. Older vintage style hotel. Parking ridiculous (over $50 per day) but its Union Square so whattya gonna do?

I've stayed at the Handlery twice now and it's hard to ask for a better location. The hotel is at the center of a lot of SF attractions and convenient for business in the financial district. The amenities are also nice with spacious rooms.

This is an old building with character, but as a hotel it needs an awful lot of work doing to it. The elevators & landings smell of an old building. Rooms are large & spacious but require some TLC. Breakfast is poor. Staff helpful. Good location for transport, restaurants and shops.

Awesome location. Rooms were small and dingy, need renovation soon. Washroom pressure were great. Now on to service… check in staff and cleaning staff was really friendly and good. But 2 of the front of the house bellboys — (one is Filipino, I think the name is… Hime or something like that, the other one looks Japanese or Chinese… name starts with the letter D. Danny I think. ), were just plain rude. You can tell they were only trying to help you to get a tip, and if you decline, there was a sudden change in their disposition. For a hotel charging so much $$$$ with, you better hire better more professional staff. It is just distasteful and such as turn off to the patrons. Would not recommend.

Room and hotel is incredibly dated. Rooms are small bathroom smaller. The shower selector for my tub fell off on the last night. Security is very poor as hookers roam the halls at night and knock on people's doors selling "massages".

Thermostat in the room didn't work, so we were roasting in the middle of summer. The water pressure in the shower was too weak to wet a paper bag, and lukewarm at best even when on the hottest setting. Cracks in the roof too. The selection of TV channels was extremely limited. Bedding reasonable, apart from the pillows which was were hard and lumpy. I woke up with a neck ache and extremely tired after tossing and turning trying to find a comfortable position all night. As for breakfast, the restaurant is too small to seat the hotel guests, and the selection of food is limited and repetitive. There is no guest laundry, only a laundry service at a very steep rate. You pay for nothing else but the location and a fancy looking reception here.

Great hotel. It could use some updates, but it could very well be looking to keep the "old hotel" feel to it. Price was right, and location is ideal, so I'll be returning here for sure.

Close enough to the pulsating heart of the city, simple and cozy structure. The rooms are quite large and the bathroom is very good.

Great location in the heart of the Union Square area. We really loved the pool, which is in a warm sunny & peaceful courtyard in the center of the hotel. Rooms are comfortable if small, with good quality bedding and beds.

The hotel is this quaint old-feel hotel with friendly staff. They were great in accommodating us when we requested a room with different sized beds (we were booked into one with twins! ) And even brought the new keys to us instead of having to go get them.

Top location, 2 steps from Union Square, in a safe area of the city. It has an inside parking fee. The structure is modern and very welcoming.

The Hotel was very expensive.
We had booked a suite for 3 night at 1000 dollars… we had the right to a tiny room with mattresses on the floor for children (…) rudimentary comfort… tiny bathroom… personal unpleasant & contemptuous. Add to that 150 parking dollars… but hey it seems that it is normal SF (…)
The only positive point is that it is very well placed.

Very good location. Older hotel but everything clean and well maintained. Price for one night of course is significantly more expensive than in the countryside. Nevertheless, the hotel's good location justifies the price. The room is spacious and well furnished. The staff attentive and friendly. The only lack was the WLAN, no matter what time of day, it was just too slow.

A very good hotel experience. Classy style and atmosphere, clearly a building with a history of its own. Professional staff, lobby has a courteous concierge. Rooms are not much bigger than your usual motel room, but decently equipped with good beds. Rooms have their own value box. Bathrooms are somewhat aged and could use an overhaul. Free Wifi that works reliably and is very fast, best yet I've tried while on the road. Large facility with a decently-sized open-air swimming pool in the inner courtyard. Has fitness room. Has valet parking service. Directly connected to the Daily Grill, a likewise stylish dining place (expensive, but good selection of drinks). Situated north of Market Street, pretty much in the middle of San Francisco — you can walk anywhere in the north-east part of town within twenty minutes if you are quick on your feet. Bus transport to the Golden Gate Bridge is ca. 20 minutes distant. Shopping is… heck, it's the middle of SF, you have shopping for whatever everywhere around you! Dining opportunities coming out of your ears as well! Overall, a great experience the price considered. "San Fran" is one of the most expensive cities in the world, rent-wise, so that it is not more expensive is honestly a treat to you — if you make use of it that is.

The hotel is from. The 1920s and has a lot of "historical value" to it. The staff is friendly and check I etc is super easy with no lines. The rooms are clean, mine had a poor view but I'm sure others are better. Overall a very quite hotel and I would recommend it.

This place is cool. Rooms are clean. Staff is nice. The area it's in is very touristy, which I knew before coming here, so be mindful of that. The only strange thing about this place is the narrow, dark hallways. It's kinda creepy…

Stayed in the older part. Staff very friendly. Room clean. Good Wi-Fi (though dont think this is complimentary) Aircon noisy. Windows are old and let street noise in. Small pool and gym available. Not a bad hotel, but would have expected better for the price.

The hotel and staff are pretty great. It's perfectly located near so much, and everything it's not within walking distance of, can be reached by public transit. The building is classic, there's a ton of quaint old features. The rooms are cozy but clean and comfortable. The free Wi-Fi is nice. I would recommend for anyone wanting to be in middle of sf.

Would definitely recommend this hotel. Staff were extremely helpful and friendly, professional, trustworthy. Location great. Hotel clean, bathroom clean, bed linens crisp and clean, bed and pillows very comfortable, extra blankets in closet were in a clear storage bag which I liked very much. Coffee maker and fridge in room were great, and staff were happy to provide a kettle for tea making. Public pay phones in foyer were useful. Business centre available with free facility to print airline ticket was really useful. Staff had good local knowledge of the area. I booked this hotel because it was highly recommended to multiple people. Pool looked great and there was a really nice outdoor area with heaters to relax. Foyer provided comfortable lounge areas for guests to relax. Thanks Handlery for a great stay.

We were greeted warmly and quickly checked in and shown our room. The hotel is clean and well kept. The room was smaller but we weren't planning on spending much time there. The pool was clean and quiet. The fitness room was clean and had enough variety in equipment. A great night in the city for my wife and I and the Handlery was another highlight to our trip.

The rooms are small but over all very clean and tidy. Service is great, no complaints. Just a good hotel.

Room is right next to union square which is not in a quiet area. The hotel is nice and friendly, but my room has some dirty marks on the wall that looks like blood stains. This is my third stay and I would return as the location and service is great.

Great staff, responsive service. Offered great deal for the holidays. Allowed us to check in early because I came from abroad. Although there was lack of clarity on receipt confirmation, the location is hard to beat and parking is a breeze. Perfect location in union square and plenty of coffee shops, restaurants and retail minutes walk from hotel.

I booked rooms for a stay at the Handlery Hotel this last weekend. We were treated so special and had a fabulous time. The hotel is so convenient and so much character. The restaurant at the hotel daily grill was wonderful. I will also be writing a email to the manager conveying my thoughts. Everyone working there were so friendly and helpful. Planning on staying there again soon!

Extremely rude staff. Very expensive for what you get. Will definitely not recommend to anyone, nor will I ever stay here again. I would've given it zero stars, but it would not let me.

Best location, but very noisy at night. Very small room and old facility. When someone walk down the stairs, you can hear the very loud sound from the ceiling. In spite of bad condition, the price was not cheap. So, I'd like to recommend chained hotel.

I stayed there only for one day, and I can easily say this Is a very bad hotel the staff is very rude and unprofessional. The parking is $50 but the staff there is very rude and they do not take care of the cars also they state that " they are not responsible for if anything is missing and stolen from the car" I remember having a tiny argument with the guy who took my car (the only thing I left there was a folder with idocuments) and when we picked up the car the file was gone. I will not recommend this hotel to anyone.

We stayed at this hotel in July 2014 and found it really good, centrally located and close to excellent dhops, nice restaurants and transport. The restaurant had lovely food, fantastic breakfast and was well priced.

The historic queen room I was in was large and comfortable. Hotel is well placed in the city, close to union square. The restaurant is pretty damn good too. Usually busy and has tasty american food.

I was really excited for my stay in San Francisco for the second time. We previously stayed at a really awesome hotel with great views. I was told my parking here was included in the stay (since I was a hotel guest). Well upon check out, I noticed they were trying to charge me almost $100 for parking! I asked the front desk lady about this and she was just not helpful at all nor did she want to help. I left my express check out in the box and went into the restroom near the front desk, upon coming out of the bathroom, I could actually hear the gal and the bellman talking about me and how dumb I was for not knowing parking was going to be an extra charge. I also asked the manager to give me a call and I never heard from anyone. I would never stay here again. Not only bad customer service but my view was of other guests windows and walls. Thanks for nothing Handlery and your staff.

Stayed here for a few nights in Spring of 2014 and enjoyed it quite a bit. The hotel has a very classic feel to it. Not really what I am used to here near Chicago at all. It does, however, appear to be very well maintained. Location is very good as well, right in the heart of SF. Less than a 10 minute walk to the cable cars, tons of restaurants in the immediate vicinity, lots to see and do in an interesting (albeit pricey) city. Warning: Do not walk down Taylor Street after dark.

This is a good space to hold a meeting. I've never stayed in it as a guest but rather attended meetings in a large room for conferences. It's in a great, central location with decent amenities. You won't be writing home about the intricate decor or anything but you also won't be having to pay for that either. Bathrooms are clean with tight-fitting stalls.

Nice and clean hotel in a good location next to Union Square so its accessible by the trams which stop round the corner. Room was nice but it seemed a bit over the top in places and above its station. Free Wifi was a bonus and the breakfasts were good. Staff were abit slow at times and felt we were being looked down on a few times as they have a lot of richer clientele.

Great location in Union Square — close to everything! Hotel was clean and the staff was friendly and very helpful. They also have a small outdoor pool to enjoy on the hot days. Our room had a balcony perfect for a night cap and people watching. Definitely recommend this hotel.

For the price there are better places. The room was ok, cobwebs in the hall and the bed's headboard looked like something had hit it really hard as it was busted in the corner. The room was fairly sized. The location was great, and no major issues. Just an ok hotel.

We were supposed to stay at the Worldmark but because of a hotel flood they placed us at this nice hotel instead. We had a great time. The location is amazing. The beds were good. The hotel has a decent clean feeling. The windows are definately thin, we were facing Geary and there was a lot of street noise but I just put in my earplugs and things were okay. Personally I felt like the location overrulled anyting negative. We stayed at the courtyard marriot for our 3rd night of the trip and it was quieter but so far from where we wanted to go. With hotels there are just positives and negatives whereever you go. It did think both hotels had great customer service. And they were both great about holding our luggage while we were 'checked out' but still in the city.

Do not expect a luxury hotel but is located in Union Square a good starting point for visiting the city. Inside the hotel there is a restaurant not bad. Very near a cable car stop. The neighborhood is quiet and very commercial.
