Really centrally located. Parking garage across the street, awesome restaurant/brewery across street.

Nice hotel, great location, very clean.

I booked this hotel for a business trip because of location and rates. This hotel has that going for it. The mattress is also passable (but the pillows are terrible). Besides that, I feel like I am in a hostel. The pictures on the website must show the high end rooms, because mine looks nothing like what they advertise. The floors in the room are not level… I feel like I am walking through a funhouse, and the bathroom is the worst for that. It has a huge dip in the floor because of a drain in the middle of the room. The electrical sockets in the bathroom don’t work, so I had to plug the hair dryer into a socket next to the bed with no way to look at a mirror. There is a dorm fridge in the room for anything you want to keep cold. The paper they give you on check has a section that lets you know how to operate the fan in your room. There is no fan… which means no circulating air. I had to open the window to the outside, which also has no screen. The tub had some brown streak marks in it when I arrived… the mirror in the bathroom is rusted and cracked in multiple places. Did I sleep? Yes. Could I have slept for a better value and experience somewhere else? Yes. The rooms advertised on their website have cute mirrors and colored walls. This room is stark. I travel to SF for work often. I will never stay here again.

Location great. Rooms okay. Price okay. Showers and heat, bad. Staff bad. Only hotel I've ever been to in my life that didn't have a clothing iron. Staff pretty young and good intentioned but a bit unprofessional. The real issue is the management. Established 1909 so that would be almost 110 years running with no clothing iron, if staff are to be believed. Overall, would not recommend.

Great location by Union Square yet quiet at night. Cute rooms big enough for a couple. Front desk friendly.

Was not aware that half the units here have no shower or washrooms. I guess that's what you get when prices get raised 3x for conferences. There is a single shower and a single toilet on one floor. There's a poorly soundproofed passthrough door between every two units and I can hear every sound when the other guests with a toilet decides to use it. Next time I guess we have to pay 500+ per night instead of 300 next time. They get two stars instead of one for nice staff and relatively clean facilities. I suppose one could give them high points if it was considered a step above a hostel.

A Nightmare since the very arrival: no hot water in the shower, hairdryer not working, and the room was dirty. As if the noise in the room was not enough, the radiator has started to whistle and become very hot at 6am in the morning, making the room extremely hot (we're currently in July) and leaking water all over the floor, where I had to position my luggage since there was no other space left. Don't go there.

Great location. Comfortable bed. Room was a decent size. Happy with what we paid for this place. Only negative was the outside noise but it didn't phase us too much. We would definitely stay here again.

We stayed there as a family of three in a deluxe room with two queen beds. The room is exactly the same as its official photos on TripAdvisor! Staff was very friendly and helpful! Location was fantastic, right in the heart of SF Downtown. The hotel itself is full of history, and well maintained. We will definitely return, and thank you for hospitality!

Except the situation that is perfect, everything else is very disappointing! Room on the street extremely noisy!

Clean, simple, and in a great location. Some floors belong to The Pod Room on Powell. Locker space could be a bit bigger but enough for a small carry on and a bag pack. Price is fair. Don’t expect anything fancy but perfect for those on a budget. Apparently the other pod room is equipped with key cards but this one uses a standard set of keys. If you forget toothpaste or need a quick snack, Walgreens is literally next door. Forget to bring enough clean underwear? H&M is across the street.

Cute and cozy hotel in the heart of SF. I loved the location, Union Square and all top brand stores are around the corner, continent for shopping trips :) the room was clean and had everything I needed. They could probably upgrade to a bit better toiletries, but I had my stuff with me so I can't judge theirs based on just the looks… The receptionist was extremely nice and accommodative, she upgraded us to a bigger room with cool views to Powell Street.

The location is great. Right on the Old Trolley line that is a block away from the bottom of Powell where it starts. The price CANNOT be beat. The room had a bit of a dorm feel to it, but it had everything you need. Spacious private bathroom. Staff was kind and answered questions. Are there homeless outside, yes that goes for all of SF areas that I saw, but it is a very safe area with a nice Walgreen next door with anything you. Union Square is very close. I was solo for a work trip. Highly recommend for the price.

Okay hotel, great location. Our room was a decent size with a window overlooking Powell St. There was a ceiling fan in the room which didn't offer much cooling so we had to open the window onto the street at night which was quite loud. There was an easy to use safe in the room, a TV and a fridge. In the lobby there was a microwave and some laundry machines which were I think available for use by guests, however I didn't try using them. The location of the hotel was ideal. 2 minutes from any form of public transport and in the very city center. 2 doors down from the hotel there is a Walgreens (supermarket/pharmacy) and nearby there is a Westfield Shopping centre, along with many other big brand stores in the area. I would recommend this hotel purely for it's location.

Central hotel, renovated and well cared for. The bathroom, although small, is functional. Very welcoming and helpful reception staff, especially if your flight arrives late a day.

Really nice little place for the price! I really liked how they had full bottles of their toiletries in the bathroom instead of replacing travel-sized ones every day. My only complaints are that the floors were super slippery; I walked on them with socks and nearly did the splits several times. Some of the furniture isn't very stable, and rooms get overheated/freezing very sporadically. But overall it's a good room in a great location.

The rooms were clean and well equipped! Quieter than other hotels I have stayed in the same block (quiet for a hotel in a busy part of SF). Will be returning!

Only point in favor, location… for the rest expensive, with poorly equipped rooms, not very clean, uncomfortable bed and small. Towels almost always stained and old.
Maybe more a hostel than a hotel…

A good hotel, great for the location: a stone's throw away from the Bart, the subway and the cable car terminus. Room cleaned daily, only flaw the shower that did not always work and the guy in Recaption who wanted to charge me the room already paid. A Stone's throw from Union Square and all the locals in the centre.

The location of the hotel is more or less good. Very close to Union Square and with nearby shops and bars. The room was also nice in size and the bed was comfortable. The amazing thing is that the room had cost! We could run with the suitcases. The bathroom was pretty normal.

Always kind service, always clean, a great steal in a great and accessible area. They have accidentally double charged my card for my most recent stay but I believe it has to do with the way I booked (through a third party) and they always correct it without hesitation. Mistakes can happen and sometimes I find it more valuable to know how it is taken care of to truly know a place and the integrity of staff. Rooms have the amenities you want including a fridge and a hot water kettle. Bags can be held at the nearby sister hotel around the block. In a walkable city like SF, this was a great necessity.

I stayed for 3 nights in this Hotel in the heart of San Francisco. I loved the property, the staff was kind and I have to say that the location is very convenient if you want to get to many tourist attraction points in the city. The only flaw is the night noise that comes from the street, night jobs, transportation and the hubbub of the Clochard in the street. Ultimately I recommend the hotel but at the time of booking request a room that does not give on the street side.

Excellent location on Powell ST and very close to the Union Square. The service is excellent and the rooms are comfortable, they have everything essential to enjoy the stay in San Francisco. Very good choice for travelers.

Nice, quaint hotel in a great central location. Came here for a few days for a conference so it was relatively close to get to and fro the hotel. Only thing I would comment on is of the 5-6 days I stayed here, Wi-Fi was not working (little if not at all). As a result, could not work/connect my laptop thru Internet the majority of the time. Other than that, it was a pleasant stay overall for the value of price paid.

Excellent for the money. But know what you are spending your money on. No AC, no bathroom unless you pay extra. But if you are using the room as a base and dont mind the limited amenities it is very good for the price.

Good location, in our case the Wi-Fi was extremely bad, which was a bummer when trying to plan things. Cleanliness is OK and the staff is nice.

Room was clean and comfortable. Economy hotel but very worth the money. Staff super helpful and friendly. Even allowed us to check in early with no extra fee. All around a very good experience. Would recommend and come back.

Boutique hotel that had amazing staff and the room as beautiful. Brick wall and steel beam in the center of the room gave it a different feel, not your typical hotel room. Will stay again.

I was here from work the location is great. It is a small room with a double bed and sink and refrigerator and a TV. You do have to share a shower and toilet with other rooms. The staff is super nice in the room is super clean. There is no central heater air but there is ceiling fan and you can open the windows to get cooled off. It's a great place to stay especially since you only spend the evening in your hotel room.

We chose this place because was the only one available with short notice. Central location and very kind staff, comfortable but small bed, room clean but very basic. The shower requires engineering skills to make it work/ set temperature. Ok choice if you don't find anything better for the same price.

Great place, good location, very clean. They provide storage place around the corner. The employee doesn´t take your luggage to the room, but that´s not a deal breaker for me. They don´t have a place for breakfast, but the room has coffee/tea self-service and a little fridge.

Just so cute and quaint! I only stay for one night and it was very comfortable. I got a room with my own bathroom. The bathroom has a door on the opposite side leading to another room. I can hear people easily so I'd suggest just closing your bathroom door to minimize the noise. Very basic amenities. They have a hand out with all the info you need about your stay and suggestions on what to do around the city.

I stayed at the Herbert hotel for one night in the shared bathroom. For my purposes of a place to sleep in San Francisco for the night it was fine. It is in a good location, good price for the area. The room itself is a decent size, has a mini fridge and TV as well as a safe. My critique would be that the shared bathroom is too small to be really functional. Fortunately only 4 rooms share it so it was mostly free when you needed it. Basically like a hostel with the shared bathroom. Decent value. Friendly staff.

Close proximity to Powell St. Cable car start point. Rest rooms ok. Near Union Square and Metro Station.

It's good location but bad service. They don't even have storage room to let guest leave luggage when checked out. The staff never have service mind and don't try to help or advise the solution. So if you make decision to stay here, ask all condition you need before you booked.

Location is the only great thing about this place. Room size is OK (it's just a room with a bed nothing more fits). It's more of a hostel setup, shared bathrooms or use the ones in the hall, unless you can request your own. Also note No valet parking. You need to park down the block at the O'Farrell parking garage.

Rooms very simple, clean, hot drinks free, sink in the room, shower/toilet separately. No minibar. City location at night, of course, quite noisy. Laundry and soft drinks on the lower floor cost extra.
The price is certainly due to the Memorial Day and the excellent location, but for 200€ per night without breakfast is already very sporty…

Historic hotel a few steps from the Union Square with great ambiance and welcoming service. The room was clean and felt modern, despite the century of history. The Internet, however, felt as if Mr Herbert himself installed the routers many decades ago and they weren't touched since.

Pros: convenient location, recently renovated, like the fridge, milk, soda, and so on. Disadvantages: only instant coffee in the room, no coffee in the lobby, no ice machine in the entire hotel. Towels are thin, there are stains. Reserve room facilities are not adequate. Drying rack fell off the wall. Bedside lamp was broken. Night was cold, heating was used. No place to hang the towels in the bathroom, towel was gone the next day, never received the other towels. Room not cleaned properly.

Perfect location for public transportation and sightseeing. Nice and friendly service. And also a historical hotel decorated accordingly. Overall good value for the money.

Irish girl on the front desk didn't seem to helpful, more interested in checking her computer than taking to guests. We only found out about the possibility of doing our laundry and the lounge room as we were leaving, as it was next to the storage room. Our private shared bathroom room was linked to another room via a locked bathroom door, we could hear everything that happened in their room and I'm sure vice versa. The hotel didn't seem too full, surely we could have been placed in a room that want joined by paper thin doors?

Decent hotel for the price and location. It's set up something like dorm rooms. But an attached bathroom can be provided. Free Wi-Fi is included! No great luxuries found at the higher branded hotels but you're in the city to enjoy it not stay in the room. Rooms were a decent size but our floors were leaking water and the beds need to be replaced. Very noisey and slumped in to sleep comfortably.

Friendly staff, decent size rooms that are clean in a nice central location. No air conditioning, but ceiling fan does the job. Cool but small modern lobby. If you aren't looking for accommodations this is a good hotel for a couple of nights.

Room was clean, area was great, staff was nice, and price was good. Only needed a place for one night and this place worked out perfectly.

Before you discard this review for being one star, understand that this is not written out of anger but pure observation. I have never checked my bed for syringes until I checked into this hotel. The floors of my room were uneven due to the building being older than this country and the bathrooms are stocked with half a ply toilette paper. I wouldn't wish the pain of wiping with this stuff on my worst enemy. The only solid part about this hotel is the location and honestly I would rather sleep on a friends couch than ever come here again.

It was a good localization and clean, however my room was really noisy, I could hear everything from the street and the curtains wouldn't make the room dark enough. The worst of all is that I check-out in August and I STILL HAVEN'T RECEIVED MY SECURITY DEPOSIT BACK! Thats an absurd.

Mediocre hotel with friendly staff but old, loud and a little dirty rooms. Winning argument: nothing is closer to the city for a reasonable price (bart, muni, cable car, every store directly in front of the hotel).

It was a very nice hotel.

Room is poor, the bathtub is dirty, wireless is unstable, the blinds don't shield much from the light (I could easily read at 3am with all blinds shut and no lights on), and persistent whistling noise which had me have a headache every morning. In addition, it took the front deck clerk half an hour to locate our room's key. Please do yourself a favor and go elsewhere.
