Love this hotel! Great staff!

Quiet little hotel, friendly staff, coffee all day for when you need to chill out, shared showers and toilets but the entire place is VERY clean.

It's such a nice, quaint, old hotel in the Fisherman's Wharf section of the city. If you want a taste of old world charm, this is definitely the place for you! I recommend it highly!

I’ve stayed at the San Remo four times. It’s my home away from home. It truly is San Francisco’s best kept secret.

A coworker recommended the San Remo Hotel. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The thing that probably scares a lot of people from booking here would be the communal toilets and showers. I did not find this to be an issue. They were always clean, and I didn’t have problems with availability. Each shower and toilet has its own locking door, so it isn’t that strange. The showers got busy in the morning but I shower at night anyway. The hotel was in an awesome location in a very safe area and what seemed like a nice neighborhood. Very easy to walk to things like the fisherman’s wharf and Alcatraz, and could even walk to a giants game (2.3 miles) if you aren’t too lazy. While the rooms were comfortable to sleep in, they aren’t really meant to hang out in. Fortunately the city has a lot to do! Would definitely stay here again, and will try to do the penthouse suite!

Great walking location to most attractions, super friendly and helpful staff. This place is quirky but very clean and great value for money!

Great location for exploring the area. We found the hotel ideal for us. The room was small but very clean and a comfortable bed and pillows. It's a very querky with a unique feeling and the shared bathrooms worked out fine. Lots of clean fresh towels plenty of hot water and didn't have to wait for long periods to use the facilities.

NEGATIF : Accueil froid, distant… déçus par rapport à tous les avis positifs… attention au parking il faut le payer à l'hôtel sinon c'est presque 2 fois plus cher… et le personnel ne prévient pas forcément! Les sanitaires ne sont nettoyés qu'une fois par jour, un peu léger vu le nombre d'occupants : c'est souvent sale donc. Le bruit dès 6h du matin. Fenêtre sur le couloir donc difficile d'aérer. POSITIF : La décoration rétro de l'hôtel, les boissons chaudes matin et soir, les petits gâteaux. L'emplacement est vraiment super.

Quaint. Shared shower and bathroom. Friendly front desk. Small rooms, mostly bed. Affordable. 2 hours free parking out front. Perfect if you just need a place to sleep and bathe, on your otherwise activity filled day in San Francisco.

Conveniently located close to Pier 39, one of the tourist rendezvous points in San Francisco with the seal show on the old hotel pontoons with a lot of cachet and optimized for customer satisfaction: many outlets in the rooms, liquid mouthwash mouth, cotton rods, well organized luggage care service, shuttle to San Francisco Airport, books…

Loved the European feel of the hotel. The community bathrooms may seem off putting to some at first but once you get there you see that it's really not a hastle. The bathrooms and showers are still private enough and kept very clean. Something about the communal living atmosphere provides a special experience you don't get often here in America.

This hotel wouldn't be for everyone — you share a bathroom. It was amazingly clean and totally authentic to 1906, which is exactly what I was looking for. A couple of blocks from Fisherman's Wharf, clean, amazing staff and great price. What more do you need?!

We have stayed here two times now. Great old style inn. Just keep in mind that it is old style and you only have a room, bathroom and showers are shared. We stayed in the suite this time and although a bit quaint, it was nice. It is on the roof and has a bathroom and shower. Great views of SF.

Accommodating and friendly staff. Great location, great price. The shared bathroom setup is reminiscent of a bygone era and I love that along with the architecture.

We stayed at the San Remo hotel on a business trip and had an absolutely amazing experience. The staff was so accommodating to our needs and very friendly. We were even able to get a last minute upgrade to the rooftop penthouse suite due to a cancellation. I would highly recommend staying here, it's perfect for a romantic getaway or a vacation! Wow. I cannot say enough about how amazing the experience was at this hotel. We arrived late and the check in process was seemless. The rooms, the showers, everything had the feel of something special and to top it off the location was out of this world. Next time we want the penthouse, hands down the best stay in San Francisco.

Charming hotel with an unbeatable location, in Fisherman's Wharf, a few blocks from the Pier 39. Small but cozy room with a vintage style. Shared bathrooms But very clean, with everything you need for daily cleaning. There are massage chairs that decontracted after an intense day of sightseeing in San Francisco. One block from cable car, safe area and very friendly staff to give recommendations and directions. 'll.

Just stayed at the San Remo for 4 days and loved it. As an ex-San Franciscan it was great to stay in my favorite neighborhood (yet not right in the middle of the loudness). I had a nice little room with the Herb Caen theme, lots of little extras (earplugs, hooks to hang things, dresser, sink), the hallbaths were not a problem at all, always available, private and clean, lots of little sitting corners with an amazing massage chair (used it every day after a lot of walking), just charming and with so much character! I was alone so it was perfect. Could be a bit tight for 2 or 3 people, but for that price it is well worth it! Nice staff too!

Homely atmosphere, the rooms do not have the bathroom but the common ones are clean and with always new wipes.

Very excellent! Distance jingle car rotation and pier and Jiuqu Street attractions close by there are many supermarkets although the room is not attached with a hairdryer but it's convenient to borrow from the counter. The bed is very soft. But the space is narrower. The man with the baggage should think about it. Unlimited supply of brewing drinks with tea bags and coffee and brownies in the morning.

I really enjoyed the vintage not so traditional Hotel. Very clean, the think of so much. Heated towels, great showers, you do have to share the restooms, showers but wasn't ever a problem. Rooms fit all of our needs. Great bar below and the oldest Italian restaurant in America. Very close to Fisherman's wharf. Hot guests were very quirt and respectful. It was great.

The hotel is well located right near the fisherman's Wharf. The rooms are very small but clean and have no private bathroom and most also do not have their own sink. Some rooms have another window outside. The beds are very narrow, which is advantageous in this case since you can at least open his suitcase next to the bed. You feel back in the year 1906 at which the hotel was built. You can also hear pretty much everything from the rooms next door or above. Two plus points of the hotel are the authentic design of the hotel as well as the free Ferfügbaren coffee and tea. On the whole, more of a hostel than a hotel. But if you have no high demands for one or two nights in order.

Great Hotel. Awesome decoration and style. Fits very well into experiencing SF. Good location. Close to the sea and the historical rope train. Recommended if you are a little adventurous. Not if you want the latest comforts. Bathrooms are shared. Stairs.

This hotel is so adorable! Seems like it’s been in the family for years… Love the decor which is organized eclectic… they provide for all your little needs… I highly recommend this hotel! Great location in North Beach. I feel at home here.

It is cute and true to theme. We enjoyed seeing the old architecture. BUT… It should be labeled as a hostel rather than a hotel. The room was 10x10 and we needed to leave some luggage in the car. The service wasn't good. The parking is down the street and not labeled so we needed to move the car again later. And lastly, our room was above a restaurant kitchen, so we listened to pots and pans clanging and employees yelling till past midnight. I'm glad we only had to spend one night in this hotel!

This Historic Hotel was wonderful to stay at. The rooms are a bit small but it's very cozy and homey. The staff is very knowledgeable and nice. I don't care to share bathrooms or showers but they were kept rather clean. Other than that it was a wonderful stay. I love the history.

Sweet place! Not a chain hotel, very homey and relaxed. Comfy library "nooks", shared baths and showers, cozy rooms, historic feel, walkable to North Beach restaurants and Fisherman's Wharf. Surprisingly quiet, both inside and street noise.

Beautiful old building rebuilt right after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. It feels like you step back in time as the interior has been wonderfully preserved. The penthouse, which is on the roof, is completely separate from the rest of the hotel and is the only room with a private bath. We had our own exterior staircase and a lovely outdoor sitting area. Two blocks from Fisherman's wharf with a Trader Joe's in the same block. The oldest Italian restaurant in the US, built in 1886, is on the ground floor. Excellent food with fresh pasta made daily. Would highly recommend the hotel and the restaurant.

We have just checked out and this place the hotel is fantastic! Location is good and accessible to everything. It was clean and tidy and beds were very comfortable. The tea coffee etc was good and the little treats every day were also. My only suggestion would be for one of the rooms to be a sitting room as we were a party of 3 and a bit hard to sit on the bed and chat but still happy with the rooms etc. Bathrooms so clean and the shared bit was never a problem always had one available for us. Special mention to Veronica. Veronica was very helpful with confirming our bookings and airport taxis.

We had a great time — lovely penthouse room on rooftop was like a quaint cabin with a patio. We didnt want to share a bath down the hall so we took the penthouse — the only option if you don’d want a shared bathroom. Everything we needed — cozy and private with lots of windows, comfy bed, great views. Be forewarned though, lots of steep stairs and we’re 66 and 70 so had to be very careful. Also be careful getting out of shower in claw foot tub — easy to slip.

Very nice hotel near the pier. Shared bathrooms but we knew that when booking, nice vintage to antique furniture and comfortable. Perfect for one or two night stay without breaking the budget. Friendly staff, would definitely stay again!

We stayed here for one night with our pup on a road trip and every person who helped us went above and beyond with accommodating us. Brian, Kenley, and Alex were extremely kind and made our one night in San Francisco one of our favorites on the road! We will definitely be coming back here soon. Also it helps there is a fantastic restaurant with one of the coolest head chefs we have ever had the pleasure of meeting on street level below the hotel. 100% recommend visiting this sweet piece of history on your next trip to the area.

This place is wonderful! Excellent location, reasonable price, and very clean. The building itself is really neat, and they even have a few bookshelves and a massage chair! Shared bath was clean and even better than I expected as they provide everything you would need, even disposable floor mats for the shower and bath salts for the bath! No they in the room, but I liked it that way! I was beyond impressed and am happy to say I've found my hotel for all future visits to San Francisco. Do yourself a favor and book a stay at this gem.

Lovely little hotel, which is more akin to a hostel. Very clean with many small touches such as bathrobes available for free, tea/coffee and treats in the lobby. Very nice and friendly staff. Very good location.

The location is unbeatable. The cozy nature is fun. The staff were all really nice. The European style hotel, with shared bathrooms was foreign to us, but not a deal breaker. The room was crazy small and the bed was like grandma's old brick bed with iron bedposts. We had a sink that was dripping all night. Our bed was above the kitchen below so the noise was CRAZY! But we brought ear plugs and slept through it all. On room situation alone I'd give it a 2/5. But everything else about this place brings the score up to a 4/5.

— Shower/toilet is on the corridor (general use) — we didn't have breakfast now. Gave coffee, tea and small snacks for free, close to reception.
— There is a massage chair on each floor:) — The hotel does not have a lift, but narrow staircases, hallways and small rooms. Still very cozy and welcoming.
— Great location for: Fisherman's Wharf, cable Car connection, Chinatown — Parking: Hotel offers a car park near Fisherman's Wharf for CA $20 (however no any driving in) prefers parking around the hotel (see picture)

A real gem in a wonderful, convenient location. Being 3 blocks from Fisherman's Wharf, the San Remo can't be beat. Be sure to eat at Fiori on the street level. Outstanding food and service. Rooms in the hotel are tiny so get ready for that. Shared showers and toilets were fine. All is very clean and tidy. Enjoy the massage chair on each floor.

I cannot for the life of me understand how this place is rated so high. The San Remo is NOT a hotel, it is a private-room hostel. If it advertised itself as a such, it might deserve a better rating, but since it's advertising itself as a 2-star hotel, then it deserves a 1-star rating, at best. There are a lot of positives about the San Remo, but you have to understand what you're getting when you book there. If you're expecting something like a Motel-6 (which is a 1-star hotel), you're going to be shockingly disappointed. The best way to describe the San Remo is like renting a room in a house b/c a bedroom is the only private space you will have. "What about the bathrooms? " you ask… Well, THERE ARE NO BATHROOMS. Now you might be thinking that I mis-typed that & assume I meant that there were no private bathrooms & that there were only community bathrooms. Well, you'd be wrong. I literally meant that there are no bathrooms. The sinks are at 1 end of the public hallway. So you wake up in the morning, walk out of your bedroom, & see people brushing their teeth & shaving in the hallway. Toilets & showers? In this hallway next to the sink there is an alcove w/ 4 doors. Behind each of these doors is small room, a little bigger than an outhouse, w/ 2 of the rooms containing toilets, & 2 of the rooms containing showers.

It's the weirdest hotel I've ever been in. It's all so quaint that you don't notice the small rooms and the shared bathroom. It seems to be on a ship. Recommended to visit San Francisco!

This place was so charming! Our huge party loved it. We had 3 rooms for 3 nights & the location couldn't have been better! The staff was very friendly & the place was spotless. There was never an issue with acess to the bathroom & every detail was attended to… warm towels, delicious liquid soaps in the showers, & relaxing aroma therapy throughout the hotel. Highly recommend!

It is hard to overstate how much we love the San Remo. Cozy, welcoming, in a great location, rich in history, and very affordable. Of course, it is a certain kind of place, with tiny rooms, narrow hallways (though airy and well-lit), shared bathrooms and showers down the hall (but I rush to assure you that the shared spaces are still entirely private). If you can't tolerate any of those qualities, then this might not be the place for you. But for us, it hits exactly the right balance of cost, location, amenities, and charm.

Lovely place. Don't get scared away by your first sight of shared bathrooms and small rooms. It is true, you have to share the showers with the rest of your floor. And yes, the rooms are small. But it's part of the charm of a building that's over a hundred years old. You will end up hanging out in the hallway areas with other guests and start chatting up and meet new people with interesting stories. It was a completely new experience to me, but if I ever visit San Francisco again. I'm staying at the San Remo without a doubt.

Great place to stay in San Francisco. Historic building used to house Navy sailors back in the day. When the front desk initially told us the bathrooms were shared in a more central location I was a bit weirded out, but I can assure you it's not weird at all. The rooms have a sink and mirror in them so you can use that, but showers and toilets are in the hall. Old style toilet with the tank above you and chain flush handle. Rooms are rustic and unique. This is not your Marriott, so if you're looking for a cookie cutter hotel, keep searching, but if you want a unique experience, then this is the place for you. It will not disappoint. Should be a 4 or 5 star hotel. Prices are very reasonable and staff was more than kind.

My experience here was fantastic! It reminded me very much of some sort of anachronistic pension, very old-school and European, but with a hippie's aesthetic. The rooms are small, but charming. There are no televisions, and SO WHAT! (There is Wifi, though. ) I never had to wait for a bathroom or a shower, even though the hotel was fully booked and I was attempting to use these communal facilities during peak times. Our dog was even welcomed! This hotel is PET FRIENDLY! Brian, the desk clerk, was ultra-friendly, accommodating, and kind. The prices are entirely reasonable! I highly recommend this hotel!

Hotel offering exceptional customer service!

Spent two nights at the hotel. There is plenty to do near the hotels vicinity. The rooms were cleaned but small. We didn't spend much time in our rooms, so that really didn't become an issue. I was worried about the shared bathroom but after I saw how clean the hotel is, I was at ease. I absolutely loved the massage chairs, after a long day of walking, that was very handy!

Lovely place! We stayed 2 nights and felt very comfy! I was a bit skeptic in the beginning about the shared bathrooms, but it turned out to be great! Very clean and I loved the heat lamp in the shower :-) ) Staff was very friendly and flexible. We were assigned a room without window in the beginning and we asked if we could have one with. We were instantly relocated, thanks for that!

Cute Victorian hotel. The rooms are small, but I didn't spend much time in it besides sleeping. The showers and toilets are in a communal area on each floor. It reminded me of dorm living. If you're comfortable with that kind of set up then you should try this for the experience. If you prefer more privacy or space, then look somewhere else (but you're probably gonna be paying for it)

The Hotel is very unique and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Not sure that at $200+ per night for a 10x10' room with the view of a wall no TV, no in room bathrooms, no on site parking and no elevator to our third floor room is the way we're going to go next time we're in the area. The hotel was in a good location for walking and checking out the area. There were some nice things to walk to and we walked over 7 miles and had a great time.

Great Italian designed hotel. Facilities are immaculate. Video streaming Wi-Fi. Its tiny, but very romantic. 15 minutes in bus from downtown. Right next to Pier 39 and the Alcatraz pier.

Secure, safe hotel in decent neighborhood. Great value for the money. Potential Issues: No TV and Internet/Wi-Fi was mostly inaccessible during my stay. So be prepared for that. Need to share toilet/showers and this can be a problem during rush hours, and rooms are very small. I don't have a problem with this but others may. Lots of nice, reasonably priced places to eat very close by, and a Trader Joe next door. Nice, safe, flat, scenic walk to Market Street area, and to the Embarcadero. Massage chairs in the common areas came in handy. Cheap shuttle to SFO airport, and parking is available for a reasonable fee. Great bang for the buck. Oh, I forgot. One night some loud people who had been drinking came back to their rooms. Doors and walls seem to be very thin. It can get loud, but mostly, people were very respectful of each other.

Unique hotel beautifully decorated in an old Victorian style. Shared bathrooms are clean and there is never an issue with avalibility. I would recommend to anyone. Great place to spend our honeymoon.

Cozy, friendly, nice neighborhood walking distance to wharf, many restaurants. Rooms are small but who spends a lot of time in the room when on vacation? Bathrooms were clean and best part was that it was waaayy cheaper than anywhere else nearby.

I stayed here for three nights. One of the best and most unique hotel experiences I've had. Beautiful of-the-era place that is very well-kept and inviting. The staff was always helpful and kind. Free coffee and liquorice. Great jazz coming from the open windows of the italian place downstairs. Though the bathrooms and showers are shared, availability was never an issue.

I stayed at the San Remo for 4 nights. The location is great and you can't beat the value! It is within walking distance to the Warf and the Powell and Mason cable car line. Just a bit further away but still a very walkable distance are Pier 39 and Ghirardelli Square. The San Remo has a vibe all it's own. It's very inviting and was immaculately clean.

Very old charming hotel with a lot of character. Very reasonably priced and close to everything. The bathrooms are coed but is not a problem as you have privacy since each shower room has a heavy wooden door that you close behind you. The toilets themselves belong in museums as they are these antique gravity flush type. Had never seem anything like it before and are truely unique. Great continental breakfast and staff was very nice. Felt like I was back in the early 1900s.

You can't beat it for the price, location, security, cleanliness and friendly staff. The shared bathrooms were always clean. The only downside is the 107 year old hotel does not have an elevator so don't book this place if you can't do stairs.

Wonderful hotel. You could even call it an antique. It's been open for over 100 years and while I'm sure it's received many upgrades, the room sizes and character haven't changed a bit. This is not the place to go if you have plenty of money and want a huge room, but it is THE place to go if you don't mind a small room and want to have a great San Francisco experience staying close to Fisherman's Wharf, Nob Hill and Telegraph Hill. My wife and I payed a little more to have our own sink, which was a great idea. Another thing to note is the shared showers/baths and very well cleaned and taken care of. There are disposable bath mats to use when you shower. The staff is kind and knowledgeable, there's plenty of free coffee, tea, water, and hot chocolate, and there's even a massage chair by a window in one of the hallways. There's also a Trader Joe's just down the street. What more could I ask for.
