SantAngelo, Matera - Small Luxury Hotels

Such a nonpareil experience being in the beautiful historic Sassi of Matera. Love how SantAngelo thoughtfully respects the architecture, each room elegant whilst aligned with nature. It was a treat to stay in a real cave luxuriously, the rooms kitted out with Ortigia products that smell divine; to walk out into open spaces where one can sit at night and watch the many cats hang out by the old city walls.
SantAngelo's breakfast at RegiaCorte is stunning too, I particularly loved the pastries and the selection of cheeses; the dinner service as the sun set was magical, with dishes that elevate the local cuisine. I also loved the pizza at PiuSud, stunningly charred and a flavour experience in one's mouth.
The property is located very conveniently within the lower piazza zone, with plenty of food and sights literally at one's doorstep — Rupestrian churches, views of the Gravina caves, and gelato. SantAngelo's wonderful warm team also arranged everything thoughtfully — from porters to carry luggage up the sassi steps, a history of the place, to the ApeCalessino tour. Graziemille per tutti!

Wonderful amazing experience in an incredible cave hotel in an incredible town. From start to finish everything was perfect.
Parking was arranged just outside the Sassi and the hotel organized a driver to pick us up and bring to the hotel, waiting for us on arrival. Check in was seamless. The room was ready early, even before the noon check in time.
Spectacular property. The room was heavenly and such a unique unique experience. Beautiful room and bed with amazing cave features.
Breakfast at the restaurant overlooking the Sassi was such an incredible treat.
Excellent friendly attentive first class service throughout the stay.
Great shower and bath products. Everything was thought of and very well done from start to finish.

Exceptional service from every single one of the staff. Beautiful facility. Wonderful spacious rooms each with a private quiet outdoor space we loved utilizing. Great location walkable to restaurants, hiking and tours. On site dining including breakfast and pizza restaurant was wonderful. Staff will pick you up at off site parking garage. Highly recommend!

I went to Matera not knowing what to expect. What I took away, will forever stay with me.
The atmosphere has an unabridged spirit and connection to a far distant yet current day. The hotel was remarkable and the staff, always prepared to assist in making a memorable visit for their patrons. The room that I stayed in, built from the cave dwellings, was gorgeous.
I will return there. The people are true treasure. Kind, attentive, aware and appreciative of their home and history, I found my time there a special journey. I recommend anyone to stay and experience the area for their own renewal and growth.

The Hilton Sant’Angelo SLH is out of this world. There is nowhere like it. Its location in the third oldest city in the world — Sasso Caveoso Matera — with its 10, 000 year old caves is spectacular. Each room in the hotel is unique. The views are amazing and there is so much to explore. To top it all off, the staff are both elegant and professional.

Staying in the caves was a very cool experience and the rooms were very nice and clean. Check in experience was great and the parking situation was clear and easy. Breakfast was underwhelming and getting back to the car was difficult as you need to take a shuttle to parking and they had a hard time coordinating between the driver and front desk for a pickup before 10:30am. Overall very good stay for 1 night.

I stayed at Sant'Angelo to celebrate my birthday, and I couldn't have made a better choice. This place is magical, not to mention my room, that was equipped with all comforts and prepared in all details. The whole staff was so attentive and careful and responded to my requests and needs with precision and courtesy.
What I also loved about the hotel were the dining facilities Regia Corte and Più Sud that offer delicious specialties of the local kitchen with an impeccable service.
It is definitely a place that you cannot miss for the world!

We had such a great stay at this cave hotel in the Sassi! Me and my husband stayed here at the beginning of April and the area, views and ambience here is something else. The rooms are located in real historic caves, they are nicely styled inside, so it actually both authentic and cozy.
The room had everything we needed, from water and little snacks to bathrobes and toiletries. There is also a thermostat to regulate comfort temperature, that I think it’s important when you stay in the historical area. Breakfast was included, it’s served in a restaurant and has a nice choice of sweet and sour dishes.
The whole area and ambience is just so calm and peaceful, we really enjoyed it and left feeling fully rested😌

ALERT — Hotel Room Broken Into During Stay.
Took a 90 minute tour arranged by the hotel, came back to find we were robbed.
Our room was well up a mountain (a several minute winding walk up hill), not right on the street or any easy opportunity. We have suspicions that this was targeted and there was some degree of coordination between the hotel and the tour company (Ape Tour Matera, our driver’s name was Paolo).
There was access to the balcony through a common area on our level of the hotel.
The thieves rifled through our things, took an expensive watch, bag, pair of shoes and other small items. The bag had an airtag in it and we tracked it to another location (that we had never been to) where it was dropped on the street, where the police and hotel manager (Biagio, who was helpful) came out to meet me to investigate.
We filed a police report, the hotel has video surveillance but has not been willing to acknowledge it. Despite the theft being quite obvious, the hotel owner has not been willing to rectify this in any meaningful way (should that change, this review will be adjusted).
It’s a shame. The city of Matera is absolutely stunning and the food/restaurants are amazing.

This was our first time to Matera and it was amazing!
The hotel is located near the iconic rock church Santa Maria di Idris. Our room had a patio with views of that church. The hotel is also located a short walk from the entrance to the hike to Belvedere Murgia Timone — a must do for those who can handle a one hour hike (one way). There were also a number of excellent restaurants nearby. We were not sure what to expect in a cave room but thoroughly enjoyed it. The room had a luxurious bath, a lounger with TV, and a four poster bed set on a stone base. It should be noted that the only natural light is at the entrance to the room.
Caterina at reception helped to make our stay very enjoyable. She provided a number of recommendations on what to see and do in Matera. And she provided a list of recommended restaurants outside — but near — the hotel.

Nice hotel, staff very very friendly and helpful! Applause for the guy bringing up all our luggage! The view is gorgeous and the hotel is perfectly located. The breakfast is not much but tasted ok. Don’t think you should ask more money for dishes which can be ordered. Just include everything. Rooms were not very clean and our shower was very small and overall we couldn’t get the room to be colder. But overall the experience was good!

Room was fascinating. Location was great. We have mobility issues so they arranged a tour of Matera for us in an Apecar (Tuktuk)
The service was either great (picking us up at the garage) to poor (not answering the phone at check-out time, telling me after I carried my own luggage 500 feet down 20 rough stone steps that there was another desk to call, not telling us we'd have to climb 50 of stone steps for breakfast, or that they would deliver breakfast to our room.

Sant'Angelo Hotel — Matera was one of the best hotel experiences we've ever had! From the location, to the room, the balcony view, and especially the incredible staff who made our stay unforgettable! This is a luxury resort complete with all the finest amenities and comforts anyone can ask for — exceptional property.
We contacted the hotel a couple months in advance notifying them that we would be eloping in Matera and asked if they had any suggestions or could provide help with wedding vendors — flowers, hair, makeup, restaurant reservations, etc — and the service and attention we immediately received was overwhelming, led by our favorite Concierge — Giorgio! He immediately went to work coordinating a florist, suggesting photo shoot locations, arranged for the best table in the house the evening of our nuptials, room decorations that included rose petals, 40 votive candles, full bouquets on the balcony plus one in the room, champagne, cookies, and confetti for our big day! It was magical the way he pulled off the planning so effortlessly and elegantly making our wedding so so special!

This is a beautiful hotel! Service was excellent. We dined both evenings in the hotel restaurant, which has a terrace with absolutely stunning views. The dinner both nights was divine…Michelin star quality. The service at the restaurant was amazing as well…we watched the talented maitre d’ handle some difficult customer situations with grace and aplomb, very impressive. A must-visit if you are in Matera!

This hotel is surely the very best in Matera. Wonderful rooms, especially superior cave suite where we have stayed (for three days). The services were most kind and professional. There is excellent restaurant. Location of the hotel colud hardly be better. Beautiful views from the large terrace. I highly recommend this luxury hotel.

The hotel enjoys an exceptional location with truly breathtaking views. Our check-in experience was very pleasant, and we appreciated the professionalism of the staff. However, on the day of our arrival, the temperature was 37°C, and we were surprised to find that the room was equipped only with a bathtub and no shower. Moreover, the switch to activate the handheld shower was not functioning, and it took the staff member approximately 15 minutes to adjust it. We were informed that we would need assistance again to switch it back, which was rather inconvenient.
Additionally, we were quite disappointed by our experience in the hotel restaurant. When we sat down and asked for the dessert menu, we were told that desserts could not be ordered unless we first ordered main courses. This policy felt unnecessarily restrictive and left us with a negative impression of the service.

The setting was excellent as was the parking arrangement. We would never stay here again.
I carefully studied top end hotels in Matera and selected this one. We've stayed in Small Luxury Hotels affiliated hotels in the past and have always had great stays. This hotel was engaging and responsive before our arrival. The parking solution both seemed good and worked flawlessly. The hotel greeting once we reached the property was good and the room looked nice. It was only in the evening that we realized we had issues. First the room never got cool. Second, we had no hot water in the shower. We called down to the office and after 4 tries finally reached someone. They said it could only be looked at the next day as it was too late. They did come to inspect the issues and take a video. We sweated all night.
The next morning a maintenance person did come to the room. The water was marginally made better. The room never got really cool. Ever. And they said that's just how it works. Every other hotel in this trip to Italy has had excellent air conditioning. Some of those hotels were a fraction of the cost of S. Angelo.
As for breakfast, it is in a lovely restaurant up the hill from the main street. The restaurant is beautiful. The food is buffet style with only coffee able to be ordered. It's as though the hotel just forgets about the importance of guest engagement. Nobody ever asked how the food was or if we needed anything else.
