Basiliani Hotel

Amazing staff and great hotel. Perfect location and if we ever come back to Matera, we'll be staying again. A perfect hotel in a perfect city. We arrived to a warm greeting and loved out large room. They helped us plan out 2 days and did not object to holding out bags when we arrived early and checked out on the last day. Just great all round.

This is the best hotel we stayed at during our two week stay in Italy. It’s away from the business of the Main Street but super close to everything. The owner/manager was so helpful. He gave us a map and helped us decide where we should go. The room was huge, as was the shower. Be aware though, the shower is glass and not covered incase you’re travelling with friends and want a bit of dignity.
The breakfast was epic! So much to choose from!
If you are driving, you can park in a car park on the outskirts and they will come and pick you up and drop you back later!
Will definitely be back here!

I stayed in a large room, part of which was a cave which local people once lived in. It was fascinating, and a most enjoyable stay, right in the heart of Matera. Price was reasonable, and would recommend. The staff were very helpful when it came to matters such as recommendation for somewhere to go for dinner, making the reservation for us.

Well, where do we start. This hotel was fabulous, from the accommodation, staff / service and buffet breakfast.
The rooms are quite unique, part carved into the stone in Matera where people lived in caves until the 1950's. The rooms have their own entry / exit and they boast plenty of space and comfort. They can organise parking for you locally and will even meet you at the parking area to help with bags and lead you to the hotel.
The staff are excellent and very helpful. Special thanks to Onofrio, Roberto, Martina and Luchia for making our stay so very special. They were all so lovely to us as a family and particularly to our adult daughter who has learning disabilities.
Buffet breakfast is simply superb. Loads of choice and both tasty and healthy with loads of fruit.
Would we recommend this hotel… yes, in a heartbeat. Well worth staying here as a base exploring Matera and surrounding areas. Matera is simply magical as a destination. Visit if you can. You will not be disappointed. It was even used as the backdrop to a Bond film.
We will return — the area is so very different to other areas of Italy we have visited.

Communication with hotel was very good gave as a choice of parking areas plus got a shuttle to pick us up.
The rooms are spread into different caves.
Inside the cave is a wonderful surprise!
Modern chic Italian design a fantastic bathroom with a spa shower, comfortable bed and all amenities you need.
Delicious breakfast. Wonderful experience.

Best of the best in Matera. Off course it’s not your usual commercial city style hotel so please don’t have high expectations for amenities. Enjoy the views.
We were lucky to get a suite as I booked a day before from Expedia. Very spacious and comfy.
Their whole staff is amazing. They provide a shuttle service from newer Matera town to the hotel as sasi area does not allow outside vehicles.

What an incredible place Sassi Di Matera is, and the Basiliani Hotel enriches the experience — our only regret is having just one night, I would recommend staying for two.
Right from the start, communication from the hotel was friendly and efficient — they gave clear instructions on where to find a carpark in the new part of Matera, and picked us up from there (cars are limited in old Matera).
The hotel is spread across various caves and has been restored skilfully and beautifully. The rooms have separate outdoor access. And have a modern stylish interior. Our room was huge, and the bathroom facilities were very cool including a separate glass shower at one end of the room! Breakfast was included in our reasonable room rate and it was plentiful and of a good quality.
The hotel is located perfectly to wander and explore Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano – the atmosphere and sights are truly special, and it is definitely worth walking over to the gorge opposite. There are good restaurants near the hotel, we really enjoyed Dulcis In Fundo.
I thoroughly recommend this place – don’t just do a day trip, stay and savour!

What a magical place to stay! In the caves, just above the gorge, with incredible views everywhere. Spacious, comfortable, modern, clean rooms. Fantastic breakfast each morning. Generous hospitality throughout our stay. We loved it so much. Highly recommend. Parking was easily handled with a shuttle almost to the front door. They made it easy to stay in such a magnificent spot!

If you like unique and an unforgettable experience, this is the place for you. I truly felt like I was in a movie. This isn't a "bells and whistles" place; this is stepping back in time and experiencing life sleeping in a very beautiful, immaculate and stylish cave. Basiliani is a cave hotel with all the amenities of modern day, yet entrenched in the history of a world where people actually lived in caves until the mid 1950s. What a true archeological treasure. Matera is beyond belief in its beauty and history. I was awe struck by its views, especially when lit up at night, and this hotel fit beautifully into the scenery. The beds were extremely comfortable, shower had great water pressure which I couldn't quite even understand how possible amongst the rocky landscape, and the air conditioner kept everything super comfortable. The included breakfast was delicious and had something for everyone, including vegetarians. Most of all, I have to say how lucky Basiliani Hotel is to have Roberto working with them. He is a true treasure, and one of the most kindest and caring people I have come across in a long time. Nothing was beyond him, and he genuinely wanted us to have the most enjoyable stay. I would go back in a heartbeat. What a wonderful place to stay. Highly recommend.

Very quiet hotel in a prime location, large rooms and attentive staff. Complementary shuttle service too. We decided to stay an extra day in Matera, but they didn't have space. The staff called around and found us great rooms at another hotel, made the arrangements & had our bags transferred. Great service.

They were of a unique welcome and accompanied us in the discovery of Matera. I highly recommend it!

Simply pure magic. Clean hotel, room with a view, silence for a dip in the past but just a few steps and a few narrow streets to find restaurants and shops. And then the availability of the staff: excellent.

For those who will go will be a wonderful surprise that I have no intention of spoiling!

Just perfect.
The location, the place and mostly the people.
Staying there made our stay in Matera even better.
Hopefully, we will be back.
