They charged me 200$ for smoking on balcony which I don’t smoke and I only get non smoking hotels. But the neighbors next to my room were smoking on patio when I arrived in my room. Also the patios are a joke. No privacy and very unsafe. It overlooks a parking lot. 😂 so the fact I payed almost 300$ to sleep in a small hotel room with old beds. Gross. So it really upset me how I was treated. Also the fact I was harassed twice about my service dog I’m disabled and was there to relax and see the River walk. I got a call from hotel person around 9:30 am saying that I was seen with a dog and dogs weren’t allowed on the property. When I checked in I showed the lady my dogs tags and info. So I really didn’t appreciate how rude staff was towards me.

It’s a very nice hotel. The beds are comfy. The balcony is sweet. And it’s a short walk to the Riverwalk. I’m definitely staying here again.

Pros: Was affordable and clean. Super close to the Riverwalk. Beds were clean and comfy. Everyone was super nice. A/C worked great! So Quiet inside. It's a beautiful historical building. Cons:
We had to wait quite a while to check in because nobody was at the front desk. The parking lot in back is very small and hard to maneuver. It costs $20 a day but it does cost everywhere down there. I'm not crazy, I swear. I think it's haunted, I couldn't wait to leave.

Very nice very comfortable beds room was cold and convenient distance to the Riverwalk.

We were hoping to stay the night there during the storm since we were out of electricity. Unfortunately cheap tickets overbook which is understandable with everything going on. But now Hotel O’Brien doesn’t want to refund us and they are claiming they had rooms but we went to check in and they turned us away. It’s sad that a historic place in our city is doing this to us during a historic winter-storm.

Bad customer service, refuses to refund when they overcharge all you 5 stars might check your credit card im sure you pay extra cause they dont know how to run a pending transaction.

We booked the O'Brien because we wanted a hotel with character and it did not disappoint. The staff was nice and helpful and we fell in love with the Old, Historic feel. We cant wait to visit again.

This is a charming, relaxing and beautiful hotel. Loved the patio off of our 2nd floor room. Beautiful view of La Villita and The Tower of the Americas. We were there between Christmas and New Year. The Methodist Church down the street played Christmas Chimes — lovely. Staff was friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. Breakfast was great! Thoroughly enjoyed our stay! We will be back!

Excellent option close to the river walk.

We stayed her one night for our anniversary. We also had our baby with us. Wasn’t allowed to check in early, the front desk worker informed us she was sick and didn’t want to be there. Staff was not friendly. Balcony faces parking lot, don’t be fooled by name. They aren’t on the riverwalk. You have to move your car by noon the day you check out, even though they don’t check anyone in till 3pm. Breakfast was in a closet size room in lobby. For the money, go somewhere else.

I left all my luggage and some extra money in my room when I came back my money was gone! And the hotel staff acted weird.

The rooms are very very tiny even if you’re in a handicap room. Knowing that, the staff was exceptional and our stay was wonderful right there on the Riverwalk. We were always greeted when we came in and when we left the room. Overall our stay was wonderful.

Excellent hotel and the staff is great! Rooms are large and a block away from the Alamo and riverwalk. Great location and you will not find a better parking rate anywhere downtown. Balcony rooms are the best! I consider this hotel one of San Antonio's hidden gems!

I love historical hotels and the O'Brien on the Riverwalk in San Antonio does not disappoint from the moment in enter the lobby to the magnificent rooms to the friendly staff. It is literally steps from the Riverwalk. We will definitely stay there again in the future.

Front desk customer service was EXCELLENT in helping us with any of our needs! This is a quaint boutique style hotel with a rich history. I'd definitely stay again!

The rooms were clean, on the small side. Parking is tight and there is a charge. Convenient location near River walk. Breakfast was included so that was nice.

I really liked this hotel. My family and I stayed here when we visited San Antonio. It was about six blocks or so from the Alamo and four blocks from the Riverwalk. Once we parked (the lot is a little small, but it is right across the street from the hotel) we didn't have to get back in the car to visit the sites. The rooms were nice. Breakfast was limited selection, but the food was good. I would stay here again.

Came for a convention and it seemed they were unprepared for the influx of check ins as our room was said to be ready early but it actuality it wasn't ready until nearly a half an hour after check in started. Water pressure was also spotty the first night because of all of the occupants. But overall, nice hotel with charm and a gteat price, but I will be splurging next time.

We needed a hotel close to the river walk and Alamo and this hotel was perfect. The front desk staff were all very polite and helpful. They made sure we had coupons and maps to help us out on our stay. The beds were some of the most comfortable I have slept on in a hotel. The breakfast the next morning was standard continental breakfast but it was nice to have a free breakfast. You do pay for parking, but in this area that is standard.

We visited here on a trip we made to San Antonio the end of May; wonderful staff, and we loved the room with the hot tub in it! Parking is very sketchy, so be sure to call ahead to let them know you're coming, and to find out where you need to park! We ended up paying $15 per day extra for the parking!

Older hotel, but kept up and in a good location. Staff was awesome and loved the balcony!

FALSE ADVERTISING ON ACCOMADATIONS *** Read the reviews before you stay here, they have a pattern of the same complaints. The room smelled like old really old carpet that hadn't been properly cleaned. The pictures posted are of the room. There were paint swatches on the walls of repair paint and gouges in the wall that were painted over instead of being properly repaired. I contacted the front desk to let them know my dissatisfaction with the room. By the time I went downstairs 15min, the mananger had left and the asst manager George said he didn't have the authority to do anything. He didn't offer to change my accomodations so I checked out because I had an event to attend and time was of the essence. George, told me to send an email to corporate. When I sent the email they didn't respond until 9hrs later and then told me they couldn't refund my money because I checked out without giving them the opportunity to offer me better accomodations. They will only speak via email that way you don't know who you're communicating with. The contrasting dialogue led me to believe I was communicating with different people. Trust me don't stay here even it's the last place that's not sold out. I contacted the better business bureau on these people they are just that bad.

Quaint hotel for sure. Has a good feel to it from the lobby and outside. Breakfast was decent but it seemed a little cramped. The room itself was humid even with a fan running and ac at 70. Not humid enough to be intolerable but enough that you notice it when you walk through the door. I felt the dispensers were more convenient. I rather those than the super wasteful packets or tiny bottles most places provide. Little cramped in the bathroom though… whoever designed it didnt leave enough room for the door to open as it hits the toilet. Might have been better if the door slid into the wall or opened out. it was clean though so I comfortably slept in the room.

So far the staff is welcoming, friendly, the rooms clean and spacious, and staff offer suggestions on local attractions and eateries — definitely recommend.

Excellent value for a clean, spacious room in a small hotel that is one block from an entrance to the river walk. The staff was very friendly and accommodating to my requests. The cable and internet service did go out for a brief time Tuesday night, but that was the only minor problem to an otherwise excellent stay.

Once again we had an amazing time at our stay, the staff and management are the best. As hard it is during fiesta they work their magic to the best job to make our stay the best it can be. Dalisha thanks for all you do, you go above and beyond. We look forward to next time.

A small shabby chic hotel with some of the best staff that I've had the pleasure to meet. It is within walking distance of the River walk, the Alamo, and the convention center. We enjoyed our stay.

Downstairs bar was great. It gets very crowded so grt there early. Live music is fantastic. Definitely a change of pace from all the clubs ir dance bars in that area.

Don’t stay here the most hostile environment I have ever seen for a hotel. Dirty floors not swept and the staff are brawlers and have no clue as to customer service. The parking is over priced for the area and simply not worth it after dealing with the staffs attitude.! Please scroll down and read some of there responses to previous guest just horrible and clueless!

Enjoyed our stay! We felt welcomed from the moment we checked in! The balcony had a perfect view of the Tower of Americas. Hotel parking directly across the street, and conveniently located close to downtown. Less than a 5 minute walk to the river!

This little gem in San Antonio is the best I've stayed in so far. The staff is very attentive and friendly. They really go above and beyond to accommodate your needs and make you feel at home. Walking distance to the river is really a no brainier to make your stay here.

Quaint hotel. Nice location to the river walk. Texas shaped waffles for breakfast! One star off for supplying toiletries via hand dispensers on the shower. I understand that it's very efficient, but it's incongruous with the quaintness of the hotel. Staff was super helpful and friendly!

There was some construction while we were there. They were replacing the rug with tile. Can tell it will be wonderful when complete. Stayed on first floor. Room was reasonable. Breakfast had variety, however I have many sensitivities, and was not able to have anything. Parking was tight, but so much more inexpensive than at convention center, we ended up leaving the car in the spot and took Ubers to the center. We would have walked, but we had many items to carry. Hotel is in great location, and we walked to river walk each night. We asked for late check-out, and nighttime staff suggested instead that they could hold our bags. Daytime staff decided they didn't want to hold them.

Great value for the price. Great location for getting to Riverwalk! Very friendly staff. Free breakfast. Just don't get a room next to ice maker — very loud.

This is a quaint hotel within walking distance of the riverwalk, The Alamo, downtown attractions. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and very helpful. The shower/tub features an old-fashioned claw foot tub. Daily parking fee is charged. I would stay here again.

This is a great hotel to stay for couples or even by yourself or for business! Staff is friendly and engaging. 2 min walk to the riverwalk and a 5 min walk to downtown, Alamo and mall. Highly recommend!

Nice, clean quite hotel just steps from the riverwalk. It is an older hotel with a lot of charm and character but kept in good repair, every day the maintenance guy was busy doing something. The room had a balcony where every morning we sat and ate breakfast and visited with the local pigeons. Breakfast was the standard upper level Choice Hotel fare eggs, bacon, potatoes, toast, fresh fruit, yogurt and such, My wife very much liked the coffee. The rooms were clean, well maintained with all the modern amenities and very quite. The parking lot is small and designed for smaller cars and trucks, however if you are not trying to compensate for your small male genital size with the size of you truck you should be fine. All in all a good value an a wonderful time. Staff was very friendly too, tip of the hat to Nicholas, thanks for the advice and recommendations. I do agree with the reviewer who suggested blackout curtains for the balcony doors.

This place is awesome. Friendly staff, excellent old hotel feel with a modern touch. Only suggestion I have is some sort of black out curtains for the doors in rooms with balconies, other than that, 5 stars all the way! Thanks O'Brien! :)

Good place. The rooms are not well lit and the service at night can be a little obnoxious, but the free breakfast is phenomenal.

My reservation was made 6 months in advance using an outside booking agent. Several months before my arrival I called the hotel to reconfirm my 2 bed room. I called again the day before my arrival to confirm once again and specifically asked if the room contained 2 beds as I was on a business trip and was traveling with a coworker. We also had 4 other rooms within the hotel for our other coworkers. I received a call on the day of arrival informing me that there was not any room at the hotel since it was overbooked. I explained all of the above and said I would need to be in that hotel with our remaining party. I was told I would receive a call back which I never did. I called back and was told the situation was taken care of. When I arrived at the hotel I was given the key and was told nothing else. Only when I entered my room did I discover that it was a single bed. I returned to the desk and was eventually connected with the manager by phone. She was extremely rude and essentially blamed me for the mistake since I booked with an outside booking agent. She did not change this opinion even after I explained how far in advance I had made the reservation, how it was prepaid, and how I called to confirm on several occasions including the day before. She felt she had the right to do whatever she wanted with my reservation since I used an outside booking agent.

While the hotel is nice, it is pricey. The parking is a complete joke! They charge $15/day and the parking lot is designed for Fiat or SmartCar. In other words it's TINY! Parking a 3/4 ton pick up is almost impossible. The receptionist was pretty rude too. I wont be staying here ever again. And I wouldn't recommend to a friend or enemy. **Edit: When my wife and I returned to the hotel after we went out for our evening date, my so called "assigned parking space" that I paid $15 for was taken and a car was parked in the middle of the lot. The lot is one way traffic because of how small it is. Needles to say, at midnight I was so furious we decided not to even stay at the hotel. We instead preferred to drive home 4 hours away. If I could give — 5 stars I would. As I now see the "owners" comments below I would like further clarify, not once did I EVER harass or threaten anyone. I would like to see the proof of that. That is defamation of character. My wife and I DID NOT spent hours in the hotel. We were in town for a concert. Yes we checked in, dropped our bags off, my wife fixed her hair and make up and then we left for the concert. When we returned at/around MIDNIGHT we had no where to park as previously mentioned. The night shift receptionist recommended I drive up a block to the $10 parking lot AFTER I already agreed to pay the $15 for "assigned" parking. But miraculously my parking spot was taken upon arriving BACK to the hotel.

I had decided to book this Ascend as I have heard great things about Ascend and this was in the perfect location. About 7 weeks before my trip, we needed to cancel our reservation. I contacted the hotel to cancel, and they said the manager was out and will get back in touch with me. I wait a week, I do not hear back. I call again, I get the same response, I wait a week, not call back. After this, I emailed the manager, and started to call every day, sometimes multiple times a day. Never heard back. So not being able to cancel, we decided to just take the trip. We check in and get to the room. The pillows, sheets, and comforter were stained. We take a shower, and the shower and the sink are completely clogged up. So we called the front desk, they said they cant do anything as maintenance was not there on weekends. Next morning, we go downstairs for the breakfast. The yogurt that was in the fridge was all expired about a week before our stay. The cream cheese was in a bulk container rather than being individually packed. We paid $15 a night for parking, but somehow every time we came back to the hotel, our parking spot was taken. Take your money somewhere else. I have been a long time Choice Hotel customer, and this is the first time I have been disappointed. The hotel is garbage, and to make it worse the staff is not accommodating at all. I am truly disappointed that this hotel is allowed to be considered a Choice Hotel's property.

The hotel sports an unassuming, older feel, inside and out, that stays true to it's history. The rooms are more modern, including up to date amenities and comfortable spaces. The staff was very polite and security ensured non-guests we're not allowed past the front desk. The provided breakfast was fresh and delicious with a variety of options. Overall, it was a great experience and I would love to return.

This is a very nice hotel located between reasonable walking distance to historical market/ tower/ Alamo/ and River walk. Staff was really friendly and helpful make me feel very welcomed always greeting and asking how my day was. I didn't want a room facing front seeing the streets so she managed to give me a room facing the back of the hotel. The room was very spacious, clean, the spa bathroom was very lovely, gave a nice atmosphere, nicely decorated. Didn't have a problem with noise, would definitely stay here again.

This was perfect for me, I loved the cozy room and loved the bathroom, breakfast was more than I needed and staff was very helpful and friendly, if your looking for somewhere to stay on the river walk this is the place, access is right there so we went to river walk several times, I really enjoyed myself, wish the balcony was a little more private and second floor balcony have no lights only 1st and 3rd but these things didn't tarnish my good time at all. Highly recommend if your taking a romantic getaway.

Great little hotel for a getaway. Romantic balcony, great room and customer service was over the top. Room rates were comparable for the area. So close to everything. Walking or taxi. Watching the sun come up with the tower in view was sweet. Definitely a revisit is on the horizon!

The staff were nice and the location is great, but I had to give a one star. I am not sure how it got a 4 star on Google Map and it was definitely misleading for me in making my decision. First of all, the hotel name "O'Brien Historic Riverwalk, an Ascend Hotel Collection" built up my expectation. It sounds like a boutique hotel with classic decoration and personal touch. If only I knew it's a member of Choice Hotels (Quality Inn, Econolodge) I would reconsider it. My bad. The hotel was dim inside and dated. Scratch stains (black) in the toilet of the room I stayed. Old wallpaper is slightly peeled at the corner. The ceiling of the bathroom (I stayed on first floor) has a soft pocket. Bathroom has some smell. One morning after I showered, the soft pocket on the ceiling of the bathroom was dripping water (what the hell?! ). I think Choice Hotels need to fund it for some fresh paint. It doesn't deserve 4-star rating on Google Map now.

Good location, rooms were a good size, breakfast was warm and delicious.

If you stay on the street side you will not be able to sleep past 5am as the entire city bus fleet will be driving through your room, due to the fact that the original, single pane windows are barely holding together enough to keep the elements out. Stay at the Crockett if you can.

Great prices and fun to stay in a local historic place instead of a chain. Only a 2 minute walk to the riverwalk where all the fun restaurants and bars are. Parking was cheaper here compared to almost all of the other hotels (10 instead of 30). Our tub was really relaxing with lots of hot water. Only reason we are giving a 4 star is because we were on the bottom floor so unfortunately we woke up to everyone eating breakfast outside of our door at 8am.

I had a very pleasant stay at this hotel. It was clean and cozy, and the staff was very friendly. And it all came at a reasonable price. I was within a reasonable walk of all the central San Antonio destinations I had planned on visiting and the parking lot was handy to have so I could just leave my car and wander the area by foot. The breakfast was better than advertised in the hotel's online listings. There was some construction and noise in the hotel due to some recent storms in the area, but the staff was very up front about that issue ahead of time and their polite communication was very much appreciated.
