The Congress Plaza used to by my favorite hotel in Chicago. I have stayed a lot at this hotel. It has its quirks, but I was never anything too bad. (It is from 1893, so there is some leeway. ) However, this stay made me never wanted to stay here again. I was put in a room directly next to a room that was being gutted and renovated. No big deal during the day, right? Well, the renovations were going on at midnight! Sledgehammers, drills, vacuums, loud shouting, metal banging around. I couldn't believe it! I went down to the front desk and they never acknowledged the construction; just asked if I wanted to switch rooms. Like, what? The only acknowledgment I received of the construction going on was the desk staff telling me he'd move me down two floors to get away from the noise. Who puts someone in a room directly next to a room being renovated AT NIGHT? I can stand the dodgy clientele, I can put up with the room being 85 degrees at night, I can put up with pot smell everywhere. But this was the straw that broke the camel's back.
