Little reommandable, very dilapidated and not clean.

For an American hostel, it was pretty good. Clean enough. Gritty homeless population in the area, but they didn't bother me. A bit noisy. Worth the cost. It was fun to meet so many international people.

Mixed opinion: The private bathroom was not functional (and it would seem for a long time). The common bathroom is in a sad state, with a gaping hole…
But, it's ideally placed, and really cheap (compared to other hotels in the vicinity)

This place is located in the heart of San Francisco with easy access to popular places such as Union Square, Powell Station, China town, Pier 1, Trader's Joe (Grocery shop), and other shopping malls. Though this place offers a hostel type environment, many services are below average! It's wonderful to see animals in their natural state.

Shabby hotel, wallpaper that peels off from all sides, no plugs, totally unsanitary showers.
No more 4m2 of floor for a room with 2 bunk beds so no storage for business, posters detached.
Sink clogged in the room, no towels provided. Very friendly staff

You can't beat the price and the accommodations aren't the worst. Good location as well. Certain staff members had little patience for questions but overall they were helpful and polite. Not sure what the bad reviews were expecting, it is by far the cheapest hostel in the area.

The location of the hostel is really good. Near from the Powell stop and the city center. The service is ok, me and my friend stayed on the same room and the girls that we met in the same room was cool, it was a great experience. The building is old as expected and everything is really simple and clean. Don't expect too much and you will enjoy because their price is really good. The shower is really hot and I don't have anything to complain. Enjoy San Francisco!

Very good location Minimum comfort. Poor cleanliness. No power outlet in the room, except one in the bathroom (in my case shared between 4 people). Discouraged.

This hostel is extremely low budget and low maintenance. Everything was old and low quality, parts missing, things falling off. During check in you are given a thin sheet to cover your mattress and a pillowcase for your plastic pillow. Come prepared with your own blanket. In the room there are no fans. Windows fully open if you need air or a quick exit from current life. In the restroom, toilet paper is provided but that's about it. No complementary hand soap or little shampoo. The water temperature in the shower was fickle and impossible to adjust. It was a miserable experience. Overall… it was better than sleeping in my car that night.

The people, location and rooms are good but the breakfast is not enough. There are a dispenser with coffee or water hot/cold, they gives you pancakes that you make yourself, the kitchen hasn't cutlery. I was sit up with a guy in the lobby and a little mouse appeared. I think that they could lower the price for the quality.

The place is dirty. There are rats. It's loud and smelly. Linens seem not changed. No electric outlets. Attitude of staff is ride and unprofessional. Don't stay here.

Well, the staff were pretty helpful! That aside, I'm walking down the hall which looks like it's from the shinning it's very creepy, my pillow is made of plastic, I have to make my own bed with a kids sheet which isn't long enough for an child, the laundry has half its machines busted and doesn't dry your cloths, so my room is now a fort of cloths (kind of cool), the bathroom is a toilet that's two inches from the door, pipes are rattling above my head and free breakfast is make your own pancakes. I paid too much and have three more days…

I think it's the cheapest hostel in San Francisco. Very limited facilities. The hostel is up to 6th floor but the elevator can take only two persons. Most of the time you have to use the staircase or wait a long time for the elevator. Lockers available only in the first floor and very small You can keep up to a vanity bag instead of a small backpack. Don't choose free breakfast because you need to cook the pancakes. Only advantage is it's close to Powell metro station but outside street is full of homeless people.

Alright for a night stay. Smelly rooms but it's a hostel filled with cool backpackers. Common area is decent. We found mice in our night stay! Can't comment on washroom issues as we took private room with ensuite washroom (which is in not so great shape)

The rooms with carpeting sometimes have some mouse … and the solution of those responsible is "do not eat in the rooms". Otherwise, young people, good atmosphere and very well located.

Very expensive, for it to come down and dirty. Staff is not exactly friendly and helpful. Too few baths and toilet's per floor! One was permanently cordoned off. Nothing to feel good about. Those who do not value comfort and cleanliness and want to pay as little as possible can go there. Otherwise, take more money in your hand and go to the hotel!

I stayed here for two nights while waiting for highway 101 to reopen after a mudslide in Mendocino county. There are plenty of Hostels in the area but I'm fairly certain this is the least expensive. Overall a nice place. Maybe not the fanciest in town but for the price, especially in San Fransico, it was a nice place to stay. I guess you would say it's located in 'Lower Nob Hill'? But it backs up to Tenderloin. The neighborhood is kinda intimidating but I never had a problem other than being bugged for change and cigarettes every block. (But this is overwhelmingly common in San Fran) The staff was helpful and knew the area and public transportation very well. I stayed in a four bed (co-ed) dorm room both nights. Beds were decent, they provided new sheets at check in. (No towels) Overall the place was clean, my door locked, hot water in the showers, etc. The free 'breakfast' in the morning consisted of Pancakes and Coffee. Available from 6-9am. Nice common room with plenty of seating, free pool table but no cues. Lots of international travelers, everyone I met was super cool. The first night I ended up going to a San Fran Giants game with a couple guys staying at the Hostel. I'll end this by saying 'you get what you pay for'. If you need more than the basics, look somewhere else, but for the cheapest Hostel in town it really is a bargain for what they provide.

That's how hostel should be. very good location, clean and simple. Interesting people always around. the thing is — there is No parking lot.

It is an old hotel that could be amazing if refurbished. The bedroom is okay but one of our room mate saw a mice. There is a big room where everybody can eat and watch TV but ot doesn't feel cosy.

It is cheap, but the cleanliness is bad (my bedspread had bloodstains and I had to ask to change it) and the bathrooms lack the sink, just put you sanitizer.

Old building but well maintained, does not have car parking thing that is two blocks away from the hostel, regular breakfasts and lift only for two people!

Good to spend a night are spending a lot, but nothing more. The rooms are good, the common areas are comfortable but the breakfast leaves a lot to be desired and the bathrooms are quite uncomfortable.

5 stars ONLY for the awesome staff (Alexander the Russian-German Great, Jose, and company. Very shady part of town unfortunately. Very morose, depressing decor. Good price though.

Hostel is a bit dated but very affordable! Walls are very thin so noise between rooms and corridors can be heard easily. Great proximity to union square and the bike rentals!

Good place in downtown to sleep. Close to everywhere. Good balance quality-price. Breakfast included. The pool has the worst sticks of the world. If they change it will be perfect. Good atmosphere.

Staff is super friendly! Unfortunately it's a shared bathroom experience and the bunk beds are extremely squeaky. You move an inch and it moves the whole bed! Great value for your money otherwise. Would still recommend if your on a budget.

Simple, breakfast is not worth it. The comfort of the beds is austere and the space in the room is limited. A reasonable option if you are young and looking for something cheap just to sleep.

Cheap hostel in central location, as far as good. However, the house and the rooms are right down and the breakfast consists of pancakes which you have to make yourself. Who does not bother here can be done well.

The worst hostel in my life. Disgusting service. Very old room. The smell and the stifling don't give you a decent night's sleep.
If you're sensitive to these things, don't make a cheap price tag.
