I recently stayed at Azumi Setoda, and while the hotel’s architectural design and aesthetic concept are undeniably beautiful, the overall experience fell far short of expectations for a property in this price range.
Before arrival, the hotel specifically requested that guests provide ferry arrival information via email. However, despite sending all requested details, no one came to meet us or assist upon arrival. This raises the question: what was the purpose of collecting that information in the first place?
Check-in starts at 4:00 PM, which was the latest check-in time I encountered during my travels in Japan. Unfortunately, the service did not justify the inconvenience. The staff appeared indifferent, unengaged, and lacking in professionalism. No one offered assistance with luggage, which was surprising. If the hotel intends to provide a more Western-style service experience, I have lived in Europe for years and rarely encountered this level of passivity at a luxury property.
The room itself was pleasant, with good use of space and thoughtful design. However, maintenance standards were disappointing. For a relatively new hotel, visible cracks had already appeared on some walls. Mold was noticeable around the bathroom and wash area, standing out clearly against the hotel’s light-colored wood interiors. Paint was also peeling from bathroom door handles. These details significantly detract from the otherwise attractive design.
