SOIL Setoda

It is an amazing option if you want a small place to stay during your Shimanami Kaido route. It's also preety close to the pier, and everyone is very kind in both the hotel and the restaurant. Will definitely go back.

I was very happy with our stay at Soil Setoda. My brother and I were cycling the Shimanami Kaido and the hotel was a very convenient location (pretty much on the route). The rooms were a very high standard and our view across the water with floor to ceiling windows was absolutely exceptional (I literally gave a cry of delight when I first opened the door to the room! ). It was a gorgeous view to wake up to.
The reception has a lovely small shop with local products, which were not touristy or tacky, and I picked up a lot of gifts (for myself and others). We also got a free pass each to the local public onsen, which was a 2 minute walk away, very high quality, and a welcome surprise after cycling all day!
The only minor negative I have was that we were staying in the building with the restaurant below and the sound insulation wasn't great. In the evening, it wasn't too much of a problem because the restaurant closes relatively early, but we were woken in the morning by the staff getting ready for breakfast service. It was totally not the fault of the staff (I'm sure they were doing it as quietly as possible), but the noise came through the walls and floor very easily.
Overall, it was a great stay and I would book again.

I stayed in one of their signature ocean view rooms on my Journey through the Shimanami Kiado biking trail. Yu Yu at reception was helpful and kind. The night crew at Minatoya was an absolute joy. A small critique — charging 1600 yen for a 3oz pour of wine is quite exuberant, But in the spirit of treat yourself, I had a few. The chef was fantastic and even though he couldn’t communicate in English, he did so through his smile and eyes. I had a wonderful evening here. I awoke and made my way downstairs to grab a muffin, tea and orange juice to bring back up to my room and enjoy one of the best views for breakfast in bed that I ever did have. I wholeheartedly recommend this place and especially the seven course dining experience too.

We had a great stay at SOIL in the annex (private bathroom). A stone's throw away from the ferry port for Mihara or Onomichi and an 8 minute walk to the Setoda Tourist Info office which is the official Shimanami Kaido cycle rental / return. Nice staff, great dinner (large portions) and the breakfast was simple but good. The rooms were tastefully decorated, comfortable (bring an eye mask if you need though) and they gave us a little basket to take our towels to the nearby public baths. Highly recommended.

We loved our room in the annex with a small terrace. The room was very well designed and had everything we needed. Check in was easy and the staff were very helpful. Breakfast was a very limited choice of 2 options, both containing fish, but it was tasty. The location right in the middle of the village is great.

We spent two nights here, and had a lovely stay. We loved the concept, design and location of this place, and the vibe it has brought to what is otherwise quite a quiet little town. The room was lovely — spacious, airy and architecturally thoughtful, with a nice little balcony perfect for a morning coffee. The adjoining cafe was great, and we thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast here both mornings and had an excellent dinner one night. The food was creative, delicious and very satisfying. Staff were excellent. All in all, a very relaxing and enjoyable place to stay, on a lovely little island.

Booked an overnight stay here whilst doing the Shimanami Kaido bike ride. It's a lovely small hotel right by the sea. Staff are very friendly and helpful. We had a tatami studio which was super comfy and scrupulously clean. We also ate the the attached restaurant and the food there was excellent too. No hesitation about giving this place an unreserved wholehearted recommendation.

Had the absolute best experience staying at SOIL Setoda! I stayed in the dorm which was clean and sharing with others worked well. All the staff in both the cafe/restaurant and reception were so helpful and friendly, it was lovely to have a conversation with everyone during my stay. Had the best meal of my life at Minatoya, the chef is truly talented. Thank you so much for making my trip the best!

Beautiful accommodation so wonderfully designed with wood. Beds were very comfortable. Light does stream in so you do need an eye mask. The walls are thin, so the toddler and the baby in the next room screaming at 06:30 were very clearly heard.

We have just had a great 3 night stay at Soil Setoda a d we loved it. We cycled the Shimanami Kaido and based ourselves in Setoda. The staff were so lovely. Food excellent. Loved our room. It has a lovely simple design edge that we liked. We even purchased some great local pottery. Highly recommend.

We spent a few days on ikuchi and one night was spent at Soil. A simple but thoughtfully designed hostel-adjacent establishment. While rooms are small they are very comfortable and I found them aesthetically pleasing. Coffee was excellent and you must try their homemade soft serve.
The reason for 3 stars is because we rented bicycles from Soil and one of the bikes was in very poor condition. The highest two gears did not work (chain came off bike 6 times during our ride). The two gears not working made it very difficult to go up hills.
We told staff immediately when we returned and they did not express much remorse and did not even offer to refund one of our bikes. This was very disappointing and dampened our experience. We would caution others to test bikes fully before going out. Very disappointing.

Only stopped in the restuarant, but the coffee and location are great. The interior looks like a really well refurbished Japanese house, with bare wooden structures and high ceilings. Love the modern take by adding multi-layered seating. Add in really good coffee and I would recommend this as a stop on the Shimanami Kaido if you find yourself heading through.

For us, SOIL was the best choice to stay in Setoda. The interior built with wood, glass, and soft textures made us feel in touch with nature. The location is perfect, right next to the seashore and the ferry. The staff is friendly and speaks good English.
The shared space/restaurant area is open from early in the morning until late in the evening, when most of the other places to eat are closed. The food was tasty, and the cappucino (made with their own roasted beans) was simply amazing. The service can be a bit slow in the peak hours, though.
They also have a nice souvenir shop by the reception, but it has limited working hours. The hotel offers a discount price for a spa place right across the street, which you should try by all means. It was such an enjoyable experience.

I didn't stay at this hotel but just rented an e-bike from them. The girl who served me spoke very good English and was nice and helpful. The bike was in good condition. Riding to 多々羅大橋 was a pleasant and relaxing trip.

I stayed here one night and loved my stay. Nice room, good people, discount access to nearby onsen, cheap bike rentals and delicious food at the restaurant downstairs. Everything I could want. Would recommend to anyone considering stopping this way.

Stayed one night one between days biking the shimanami kaido! Beautiful view from our room of the water. Restaurant was delicious — the sea bass dish was SO GOOD! Staff was kind and spoke English well.

Amazing Minatoya Cafe, bar and restaurant attached to the boutique hotel — Soil.
Specialising in woodfire cooked meats and vegetables and striving to incorporate many local ingredients in their dishes.
Small and larger dishes were all great for sharing. We tried many dishes including dessert, and we loved everything.
Very high quality food — especially enjoyed the woodfired pork dish.
The red and white wines were also very good.
We only speak English but the lovely young staff were great.
Our waiter introduced each dish, explaining the local ingredients and discussing the wines and local Onomichi craft beer made with Oranges!
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal.
Breakfast the next morning was very yummy too.
