I had a very enjoyable stay for 1 night, mid-way through the Shimanami Kaido. I stayed in a “Japanese-Style Superior Room with Shared Bathroom and Sea View. ” I was worried this meant I wouldn’t have my own toilet but that was not the case; it just meant there was no shower or bath, which was fine by me as I used the sento (communal bath). I usually try to book direct but in this case, the ryokan’s website gave me no option to book for a solo traveller; whereas Booking. Com did.
Here are the highlights:
— Perfect location right on the Setoda waterfront.
— My room was a charming, traditional ryokan room with tatami mats, shoji screens, and a beautiful view of the sea.
— Nice dinner & breakfast — I’d say they fell short of gourmet, but were well prepared and delicious nonetheless.
— Beautiful inner courtyard garden.
— Both outdoor and indoor bike storage.
— Safe with a key in the room.
— there’s a small washing machine (¥400 charge) if you need it, no dryer.
Some things to be aware of:
— Not luxury, the ryokan is in need of updating.
— No onsen; the communal bath (gender separated, women’s and men’s) is functional but not a feature.
— No luxury bath products, as some ryokan offer.
Very run down — stained walls, carpets, and ceilings. Desperately in need of some maintenance. The public bath is basic (no shower or bath in the rooms) and did not have nice soaps and shampoos and supplies like razors and toothbrushes which we found everywhere else in Japan. Meals were edible but not nearly as good as what we’ve been served at other Japanese ryokans. Not a single dish stood out. The staff was pleasant and attentive. Slow Wi-Fi. This place must have been nice in its heyday but did not feel nice for our visit. Based on older reviews it seems like this place has gone downhill.
Definitely not a three star hotel and very overpriced for what you get.

We booked one stay (2026/06/14) with dinner and breakfast from the website. The traditional ryokan was well-maintained and meals were in Japanese style. Nothing fancy but all genuine. We couldn't be more satisfied with what we got.
Additionally, we were grateful for the lady's attentive efforts to figure out an alternative to fix the glitch in our Shimanami Kaido plan. Thank you for going the extra mile to treat our stay. We really had a great time.
