Wow, the food alone was worth the price of the room. Dinner was served in my own private dining room with my own private server. She made sure I knew what each dish consisted of, how it was prepared, and the correct way of eating it. As for the quality, well in Tokyo or Osaka or Kyoto or Los Angeles, New York, Paris, London etc the dinners I had would have easily cost more than the room. They were each seven courses and each course, except dessert, consisted of five dishes. One course was a grilled fish, a small dish of fugu roe, a small dish of tofu, a plate of tempura, and a plate of tsukemono and rice. The building looks unimpressive from the outside but inside is a late 19th century ryokan built around a central garden. The room had an entry way, a dressing room, a main room and a sitting room with a view of the harbor. Tatami mats lined all the floors and sliding paper doors divided the rooms. Everything was polished and spotless and the ikebana arrangement was changed daily. A great place from which to explore the Shimanami Kaido.
The room was exactly what I was expecting and the view was incredible! The staff were very hospitable. They let my wife and I use the women's bath together since there weren't many other guests when we stayed, so it was like having a private bath. Finally, breakfast was a great experience and everything was so delicious. Overall, it's one of those places that I'll remember for a long time. A couple of tips. Make sure you have a phrase book or translating software on your phone. The staff speaks some English, but we found it was helpful for some communications. Also, the town really closes up early on Monday, so be prepared for that if you stay Monday night.
