Hotel Sassi

Was with a group week long tour. Lovely hotel and great location, very helpful staff. 1st week of Nov and they don't turn the heat on until mid Nov they say but we were the last group so they close b4 mid Nov? The woolen blankets were great but lack of heat made for a chilly stay especially after showering. We were primarily a group of seniors so some heat would have been appreciated. My view was spectacular of the Sassi! So regarded it as a trade off.

Very cool cave-style hotel. Not what you would normally expect from a hotel, but Matera is a very unique place! Our room was part of a monastery. Nunzio the property manager was very friendly & communicative and had many good suggestions for the area. The owner also called me to make sure we had checked in ok and to see if we had any questions. One thing to note is if you have any mobility challenges, this may be a struggle for you. This is in the part of town that's only accessible by walking, and there are many cobblestones and steps.

What a unique experience to sleep in a cave. I think that all the rooms are different, so experiences might also vary. Our accommodation had a sitting room with an attached bedroom. The bathroom and balcony were down a small flight of stairs. The balcony has a good view and a nice place to relax. Our bedroom was also a good size with room for a king bed. A nice stay in the heart of Sassi.

It is unique expirience to sleep in cave. Hotel has great wiev of old town. They have delicious breakfast.

Location is good, very nice view over the old city of Matera. Breakfast is very good, many variety of fruits and desserts. Small reception which is open 24/7. I can recommend this place anytime.

I recently stayed at Sassi Hotel — Matera and was thoroughly disappointed with my experience. The rooms are in desperate need of renovation and updating — the furniture is old and creaky, and the decor is tired and outdated.
But the real issues began when I entered my room. The cleanliness was appalling — there was dust and dirt everywhere, and the bedding was stained and worn out. I even found a spider crawling on the bed! The bathroom was no better, with mold growing on the walls and a perpetual musty smell.
The breakfast was also extremely basic, with a limited selection of stale pastries and overcooked eggs. And to top it all off, the service was unfriendly and unhelpful.
I was really looking forward to exploring Matera, but the Sassi Hotel's subpar conditions and service made my stay a complete disappointment. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, and I hope they take the necessary steps to improve the conditions and service.

We stayed as part of an Exodus tour group — rooms extremely varied with some renovated rooms/caves which were pretty but still damp and so made all belongings damp and smelly. Our cave was very old with sofa beds and a tiny bathroom that was horrible — small and dirty. Of our group of 16 — 6 people asked to move and this was accommodated after one night. If you are going with exodus ask for a renovated room and pay for the upgrade it will be worth it.
Breakfast is good with great views from the terrace. Don’t take good luggage as these are dragged and bounced down the steps. Avoid room 608.

We actually had a cave so no views or windows. Unique experience but the beds were narrow singles and were hard and the pillows substandard. Being on level one we had a very peaceful night compared to some of the other rooms. Breakfast was good and the staff very accommodating.

My daughter and I spent an absolutely wonderful two nights at the Sassi Hotel last week. We loved our room 503 with amazing views over the Sassi from the bedroom and bathroom windows! The beds were very comfy too and the air conditioning was good. It is a really lovely, quaint hotel built into the rock and is a brilliant location for visiting everywhere in Matera. Loved the bruschetta at breakfast. All the staff were very friendly too. We didn’t want to leave!
