Aque cave

An incredible hotel in a perfect location within the Sassi. Francesco and his sister Paola are a wealth of knowledge with extremely warm, welcoming personalities. We were treated to an incredible continental breakfast each morning and received top notch recommendations for tours of Matera.

Beautiful little family run place. Quaint, private, just gorgeous. 5 min walk from everything you’d want to see in matera. Can’t wait to come back someday :)

Rooms are everything you might want from living in a cave without all the things you wouldn't.
If you're looking for something uniquely enchanting, Aque Cave lives up to the charm & excellence that is the whole of Matera. The same description applies to both the town and their rentals: An enchanting labyrinth of hidden spaces and discoveries, beautifully curated and very comfortable. Paola and Francesco are excellent hosts, charismatic, smart, charming, and helpful. If what you're looking for is a fantastic location, great breakfasts, and people who can point you to the sights, they are perfect. They make it all seem easy and effortless. In fact, it's not.
But what they've achieved takes quite an effort. There's a lot of unseen infrastructure — for air and humidity — in constant need of maintenance and upgrade, that makes the rooms as comfortable as they are. Without all that the rooms wouldn't be nearly as comfortable. The history of life in these caves was a lot more challenging: where now you can enjoy a great time with the partner of your choice, in prior centuries you might have been bunking with mules, a pig, and a chamber pot.
If you're interested in learning some of the history of Matera, the hosts are enormously charismatic, great storytellers with an enthusiasm for details and ironies. They can clue you in to how Matera offers a far richer experience than you might at first suspect.

The best hotel service, stay, staff in Matera.
Flew in with a date and had a few curve balls. There was nothing that could have made that date go better than this hotel.

My wife and I decided to have an impromptu date night and were lucky to find this gem with availability. The room was perfect, and the location couldn’t have been better. These two things alone would justify a solid 4-star review. However, it was the staff that really took our experience to the next level, earning them a full 5 stars from us. They went above and beyond, providing great recommendations for sightseeing, parking, and dining options. If I could, I’d give them even more stars! We’ll definitely be recommending this place to all our friends.

Imposible to recommend more! One of our best stays this trip to Puglia! Not only this place is magical, owners, Paola and Francesco, went above and beyond to make our visit to Matera an unforgettable one, pampering us as soon as we checked in. They gave us all the best recommendations for restaurants and sightseeing even outside town. Our room was beautiful, spotless, simple and yet incredibly sophisticated. Ultra comfortable bed, crisp white sheets and prime pillows. Breakfast time was even extended one day for us not to miss it 🤗. Thank you both for hosting us in such special way, I will always remember Aque Cave as one of the most beautiful hotels I’ve stayed.

Aqua Cave is one of the most magical places we have ever had the opportunity to sleep in. Everything was wonderful. Despite the enormous heat outside, it was wonderfully cool inside the suite, and the pleasant smell of the aroma diffusers and lit candles created a unique atmosphere. The wonderful hosts Paola and Francesco were the perfect complement to the whole experience. Very tasty breakfasts and perfect location. What more could you want? The only thing we didn't like was that we had to leave the place after two days :)

What a unique and wonderful experience to live a cave! And Acque Cave is so spacious and well-decorated. Hosts are super friendly and accommodating. Breakfast is enriched and yummy.

Such a unique experience to stay in a sassi cave like this! Something about the room was extremely calming. And I was not expecting it to be so beautifully and tastefully decorated inside and outside — there were even some lit candles providing more ambience. As a bonus, there is a view into a large cistern below the breakfast place. I have nothing but the highest praise, I will recommend it to everyone!

From the owners and resident friendly cat, to the excellent room and superb breakfast, Aque Cave was everything we hoped for. Local knowledge and advice was gratefully received and helped us find extra gems we hadn’t considered when planning our trip. Hopefully we will get back again soon. This small hotel is a diamond. The room was amazing, simple but comfortable and overall unique (how many times you get to stay in a 5 stars cave😀). Our hostess Paola was amazing. They offer an amazing breakfast and it is walking distance to everything you need to see in Matera, not to mention great restaurants nd bars. Highly recommend this hotel.

We spent two nights in the Calliope suite in September 2022, and I can honestly say it was magnificent. The decor of the cave was so unique. We were expecting spartan simplicity, but it was remarkably luxurious. Our hosts, Paola and Francesco, were incredibly helpful. Paola's love, knowledge and pride in the city of Matera is obvious. She provided so many excellent suggestions for places to see and restaurants to try, even making all our reservations for us. And the breakfasts! Just when you think there cannot be more, out they come with croissants filled with ham and cheese and other delectable treats. We loved our stay in Matera and it was made perfect by staying at Aqua Cave. Thank you, Paola and Francesco. Your hotel is perfection and your service simply outstanding.
