Kangaroo Inn

This budget hotel was perfect for location, price and the accommodation itself. I had a single room which was warm, had a long mirror, coat hangars, comfortable king single bed, table and chair and another low table to open your bag on.
There was a shared bathroom with two showers and two toilets. Clean bathmats and toilet rolls filled. The only negative for the showers would be was that water did not drain quickly and if you had long showers would overflow and flood, although it did not happen with me.
The kitchen area was very tidy and clean ad impressed with the storage area for food bags.
Communication with the after hours caretaker was excellent with prompt service for my requests.
Excellent accommodation for services provided and I will be returning next year. I am from Wellington NZ.

Thank my ancestors that I ignored the 7.3 score on Booking. Com, checked Google Reviews instead, and chose Kangaroo Inn for my 2-night stay in Perth 😭
To everyone complaining that the hostel is overpriced — just book directly through the hostel’s website. OM-ancestors.
I also really appreciate that the hostel replies to almost every online review and feedback. It shows they genuinely care.
I stayed in the Ladies Only 4-Bed Dorm Room. Overall, I had a really good experience, and honestly, most of the “negative points” already had thoughtful solutions from the hostel.
Some minor issues + resolutions:
— I was accidentally assigned to a mixed dorm even though I booked a ladies-only room, but the staff resolved it quickly and were very nice about it.
— The air-conditioner/heater was a bit loud at night, but free earplugs were provided.
— There were many long-term guests, especially male FIFO workers, but everyone I met was friendly and respectful.
— The kitchen is a bit old and not super spotless, BUT it’s open 24/7, very organised, fully equipped, and the free food shelf literally saved my life at 7am on a Sunday when Woolies didn’t open until 11am.
— Upper bunk beds don’t really have a good place to hang towels unlike the lower bunks.
Things I genuinely loved:
— Elevator! Huge plus with luggage.
— The ladies-only rooms are on the 3rd floor, so there was barely any traffic noise.
— The women’s bathroom was surprisingly clean and quiet.
— Side-bed lamp + desk lamp in the room.

For a hostel-style accommodation it is clean and tidy. Would recommend due to the convenient location at the heart of Perth CBD and walkable to Perth Station, thus price point is justified. As a communal accommodation you can also meet other people from other walks of life and it enriched my trip even more. There is also a communal kitchen and living area that seems messy but is leagues better than your average College/University campus. Had a great stay and would recommend to younger or solo travellers visiting!

Terrible experience – avoid this hostel at all costs.
I requested a cancellation more than 24 hours before my reservation after being explicitly told by a receptionist at the hostel that my money would be refunded and that I only needed to submit the refund request. Based on this official information, I proceeded accordingly.
When I later followed up, I was suddenly told that the policies did not cover this refund, completely contradicting what their own staff had told me. They then said they would “check” if they could offer something due to the inconvenience caused by their employee’s incorrect information.
After multiple back-and-forth phone calls and being asked to personally return to reception, I was finally given only near to 40% of the amount I had paid for an entire week, resulting in a significant financial loss for me — all caused by the misinformation and poor handling by the reception staff.
The employee who dealt with me was completely unprofessional, misleading, and showed no accountability. During the interaction, he even appeared to smell of alcohol, which made the situation feel even more inappropriate and concerning.
Overall, this hostel is unreliable, poorly managed, and not customer-oriented. They provide incorrect information, then hide behind “policies” when it suits them. I strongly recommend avoiding this place if you value honesty and fair treatment.

Horrible place to stay. Kitchen was disgusting. The door to the bathrooms didn't work so you could hear ppl showering from your room and playing loud music from the showers. There was only 1 toilet working in the men's bathroom for an entire floor. The noise at night from our room was ridiculous. The elevator machine room must have been just next to us cause we could hear it everytime someone used the lift at night. Our room door also didn't close properly, you'd need to shove it and wake ppl up.
The most idiotic part was that there is a "Reading Room" next to the dorms but it's just full of people gaming and wathcing loud movies and there's no curfew. Some idiot was shouting in there at from 10 to 3am and obviously didn't stop after I told him to. Why have a games room next to the bedrooms when you have a whole social area in the basement?
Avoid this place like the plague.

A really nice hostel to stay in the center of Perth. It's affordable ($50/night weekly rate), everyone in the hostel is calm and friendly. There are lots of areas of chill (outside, downstairs), the air con works really well in bedrooms and shared areas. The kitchen is large and well equipped, and cleaned regularly. The bathrooms are cleaned regularly too.
The management is understanding and quick to resolve issues. I have stayed at this hostel for around 4 weeks while working in Perth and I come back here every time I need a place to stay in Perth.

I had a very pleasant stay at Kangaroo Inn on Murray Street. I booked a Queen Room, and I was very impressed. The room was clean, the bed and pillows were very comfortable, and the bathroom and toilet were spotlessly clean and tidy.
The property offers a water filter at reception, which makes refilling bottles so convenient. There is also a kitchen in the basement for guests who want to cook. When I visited the kitchen, there was a slight smell and it looked a bit untidy, although some guests were cooking at the time, and I understand it can depend on how others use the space. However, the recreational area in the basement was very clean and well-maintained.
One of the best things about this place is the amazing location—just 1 minute walk to Murray Street Mall. Getting an Uber or Didi is super easy, they always arrive within a minute.
Another great bonus is the 20% discount at Anaya Café Restaurant, which is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent—highly recommended!
I have given 4 stars for service, mainly because I requested a 30-minute late checkout (11:00 AM, instead of 10:30 AM) which most places are usually flexible with for at least an hour, but unfortunately, the request was not approved. This was the only small downside to an otherwise great stay.
Overall, great value, great comfort, and excellent location. I would definitely recommend it for anyone visiting Perth!

I like this place it is affordable but the place is really good for its price. Its definely better than the last hostel I stayed before. There's a lot things to do like reading room and common area where you can read newspaper, play board games and socialise.

Affordable and incredibly pleasant stay! The shared (female-only) room and bathroom were clean (loved that they clean the bathroom frequently), making my stay very comfortable. The thick bedding was super cozy—I slept so well! They also offer free luggage storage, which is very convenient for travelers. The staff and caretaker were very accommodating. Absolutely loved my stay and highly reco this place! Will def stay again :)

Kangaroo Inn is one of the nicer hostels I’ve stayed in over the years. The location was amazing — walking distance to everything you would need around town. The hostel itself was clean and the rooms were spacious. The bathrooms were always clean, which is always a relief when traveling. There is a giant basement with plenty of couches, a giant TV screen, pool, and a kitchen if you feel like cooking. It was a very chill atmosphere and everyone was friendly. Would definitely stay there again!

Service is great. Friendly staff. Rooms are great value and superb location. Management were kind enough to arrange a carpark despite being booked out! The owner is a great guy 👌

Clean, quiet, and right in the heart of Perth – close to everything. The staff are helpful, the kitchen is fully equipped, and the vibe is relaxed (not a party hostel, which is a big plus).
Perfect for backpackers who want comfort, stability, and a bit of peace – short or long term. I'd definitely stay again!

Recommended hostel in Perth.
1. Located in the city center, with the train station and Woolies right next door.
2. Has an elevator, very friendly for travelers with big luggage.
3. Rooms have air conditioning all day long — which is very nice for a hostel in Australia, especially during the winter.
4. The bathroom facilities are okay: there’s shower gel, hair dryers, they’re clean, and there’s plenty of hot water. However, the light timer is too short and turns off quickly.
5. The kitchen isn’t very clean — people leave dirty dishes around and the sink often pools water. But someone comes to clean every so often, so it’s acceptable. The pots and pans are fairly new with few scratches.
6. The front desk staff are great and very helpful. They notice your needs and help immediately, like unlocking doors, etc.

I booked for a week and everything was great. My roommates were awesome — very friendly and supportive, especially during my first days. I'm really grateful for their help!
As a student, I realized I needed more space and decided to move to another place where I could have my own desk in the room.

By read reviews before I went, no surprise on x3 issues. Kitchen a mess, staff un welcoming, and noise outside. Did like location, big screen, many sitting areas overall experience was good. Single room was fine, meet a few people. Maybe go back. Thanks.

This is such a great hostel to stay at, I’m a long term resident here. It has a big kitchen with space and a good communal area and the staff are always helpful which goes a long way in my eyes. It shouldn’t be a hard choice to pick this place with the location also easy to sort everything out especially if you’re new to Perth and need to get a new SIM card and transport card etc.

The place is wonderful eventhough this is the first time I've been to Perth and Kangeroo Inn has given me a great feeling of comfort except for the room (a little small for 6 people in there)! Facilities, kitchen, restroom is so clean, tidy… and spacious! Hope to stay in this Inn when I come back to Perth nex time!
