The room was small yet modern and cozy. It's all the necessities. The bed was comfortable, surprisingly very quiet I expected some bleed or other noise but none. TV was wel sized and placed. It was very clean and neat. A few tweaks would make it a better experience. There was no separation in the bathroom of the shower and main area. The sink did not drain fast or eventually at all. No ice bucket / ice machine. There is no refrigerator so there is the need for ice and said machine. Hotel lobby and team were welcoming and responsive.

For NYC, this is a great hotel in a centralized location. Rooms are cozy, well kept and very nicely decorated in modern decor. The staff was great, especially Marquis, who greeted us upon arrival. Our room was set back from the street and was quiet. Beds were very comfortable. Rates were reasonable compared to many hotels in NYC that have smaller rooms and less amenities. (I've been in some very tiny, worn out rooms) I will definitely stay here again.

I love Chelsea! This quiet location offers the basics and puts you smack dab in the middle of all the action. Clean cozy rooms at a reasonable price. Staff are nice and the property is above average.

Great location — next to Citi Bikes, next to Momofuku Nishi. Clean room. Bed was firm but short. Bathroom was nice and bright. Shower was spacious and enjoyable (although the curtain was not long enough and repeatedly made the floor wet). Very dark hallways were odd compared the bright welcoming reception area and rooms. Strange lingering staff at front desk (bag dude? ). The loudest vent ever in our room — made sleeping with AC on difficult. Views of the Empire State building from our room (fourth floor). Great window nook you can sit in to view street and city.

The location was ideal, however the hotel did not deliver on sooooo many levels. There was NO bar, there was NO rooftop. Most importantly client service was nonexistent. Both myself and my partner were treated with both confusion and disrespect.

Perfect for a casual weekend for two. We spend most of our time outside the hotel but we enjoy its intimate size and central location in Chelsea. Great value and makes a great hub to visit the surrounding city.

The aging playboy of hotels, a little threadbare and down at the heels but putting on a brave face. Decent location, friendly if not always helpful staff. All the pluses and minuses of a sensory deprivation tank. Do NOT believe ANY photo of any room in the hotel. The masters of the wide angle lens are at work. I might do it again but I’d look far and wide first.

Cheap hotel in Chelsea. The staff is very friendly and helpful, the rooms are small but clean. There is a coffee machine in the room. Unfortunately, there is hardly any daylight through the window, as the opposite wall is 2 m away. There is a roof terrace. Unfortunately, there is no breakfast here, but there are plenty of options nearby. I would book here again.

We were assigned the double room 418 and I have to say it was a real stroke of luck. Corner room with double window. View a beautiful glimpse of the Chelsea neighborhood and the Empire State Building. Private bathroom cared for and modern. Small but functional room. Plus hotel value the rooftop on the 6th floor at total is free use of guests (in the evening you enjoy incredible views). I suggest management take care of the details. It takes very little, for example it does not spoil a renovation of the blackout curtains in the rooms. Despite that the hotel for me is RECOMMENDED!

Apart from the location in a nice neighborhood the hotel is really not great with tiny rooms from the Windows that have not been washed for months anyway there is no housekeeping that passes as long as you occupy the room… little comfortable bed, old fashioned, even the TV remote only works qu1 times out of two. A catastrophe to avoid.

Loved staying at The Gem Hotel. The location is great and the staff are attentive. The interior design is on point for a boutique hotel, especially the main lounge and bar.

Rooms are alittle small. (I'm 6'8") the overnight front desk woman was amazing. We love her so much we brought her Redbull. Kept my laughing the whole stay.

Kind, accommodating, spartan but not too much has everything you need to spend a few days in NYC at affordable prices and in a great area to get to know the real NYC.

Sadly, my room is over the bar on the first floor and there is a drone until 3am. Mattress needs to be flipped, limited amenties.

Good location in Manhattan. Clean and comfortable. But tiny room. View on a wall. No breakfast possible. Quite expensive anyway!

Great stay and the staff here was incredibly accommodating to all of our requests. They held our luggage and allowed for late check-out on our last day in the city. Excellent location if you like the Chelsea neighborhood. Walking distance to Chelsea Market, The High Line and many restaurants and shops. Rooms are small, but clean and comfortable. The only downside is there's no fan in the bathroom and no fridge in the room. Despite that, we loved this "gem" of a hotel and will stay here again on a future visit.

Like a hotel in Europe, rooms are small but very adequate. Comfortable bed. Bathroom nice but no storage, maybe a wall or under sink storage could help. Staff very nice and always greet you. Nice location and great place for the price in NYC. Will stay again for sure.

Rooms a bis smaller than expected but clean and tidy. Perfect for business travel in Chelsea district.

Located in a great area of New York (corner of 22nd & 8th) rooms are small but staff are very friendly and accommodating. Will be staying here again on my next visit.

Nice hotel but definitely not 4 stars it’s a solid 3 with the small rooms thin walls and almost no service.

Cozy, quaint and caters to the minimalist. Welcoming lobby. Friendly and accommodating staff. Affordable, but beware, you get what you pay for. Rooms tiny at 125 sq ft. (larger rooms not much bigger). Room was generally clean with some areas overlooked. Smaller queen rooms have tub-less standing showers. Bathroom sink was clogged and shower drain was slow. Queen bed was DEAD. Possibly on the wrong type of frame, it sunk badly in the center resulting in a very uncomfortable rest. Doors and walls are thin and rooms are close, so you will hear neighboring patrons, especially in the tight hallways. The Gem is "100% smoke free", unless you skip the elevator and opt for the stairs— that staircase is a chimney.

We were supposed to stay but after seeing the lobby and trying to drink something at the bar, we preferred to change hotels.

The hotel is really well located (Chelsea, Manhattan). The rooms are small but nothing surprising for Manhattan. Quiet, clean and the bed are somewhat comfortable. The staff is friendly and really helpful. There are bunch of deli and shops around, very convenient.

Pleasant stay, great staff but very small rooms. I would stay in here in the future. The area is ideal if you want to get a good start to your day. Most of New York's major attractions can be visited with ease from the Gem Hotel. From Time Square, The High Line, Eatly and the Flatiron are all quick jaunts away. Thier is also a decent bar in the lobby that allows you to take drinks to your room and the rooftop patio, where one can see the Empire State Building.

Nice boutique feel to it. Entire second floor smells like weed. Very small room but it is NYC.

Always stay here, some say small rooms BUT you are in NYC only supposed to stay in room to lay your head down. And the view from the roof top is awesome. Great staff. Thanks for always being hospitable…

The room was AOK. It was on the complete opposite side of the elevator, so you had to go through dark catacombs to get it it, but it was worth the trek. It was quiet, and the heater worked. The view out the window was just another building 2 ft away, so that sucks, but it was good for sleeping, I couldn't hear the street, and the water was hot. Negatives: No view out the window I sent email to the front desk the day before checking to ask where I could park (couldn't remember the garage name), and it was not answered. I called the day of checkin to ask same question, put on hold, and hung up after 20 minutes on hold. Finally got the info, and went to the garage to park, but they were full. Had to park another block away for an extra $25. Hotel wasn't interested. How to fix problems: Answer your email same day Answer your calls and talk to the people Have guaranteed parking at your garage, not just best effort. Care about customer problems with parking, and offer cover the delta. This is based on my most recent visit which was on a Thursday night in December 2017.

The Gem is now and forever the hotel I will stay at in New York City. It has charm from the moment you step in and provides exactly what a hotel should — friendly service and a room to leave your stuff in without worry. I would like to specifically praise April at the front desk whose warmth and service made me feel like I was the first guest she’d ever had. She is an asset to the hotel! I also enjoyed the time I spent with Marquis and Sabrina at the lobby bar. If youre looking for good conversation and a knowledgable outlook of the city either one of them is the way to go. The location is ideal as it is near many places to eat and explore and not far from subway stations. Thank you Gem for making my NY experience fabulous!

The staff are amazingly friendly and helpful. April, Sabrina, and Marquise are some of the most friendly and enjoyable people I've met. The rooms are a bit small, but they're comfortable and clean, and really nice for the price. And the location is very convenient for getting around the city. I plan on making this my go to hotel in New York City.

The hotel is well situated with strong proximity to the Penn Station. The atmosphere is nice, the staff welcoming and really helpful. The hotel also has a bar to have a drink or a coffee and features a terrace with an impressive view on the Empire State Building. Caveat to a good experience: the rooms are very small (barely the space to open a big suitcase) and the ventilation is extremely noisy when on (you won't be able to sleep with it).

Very quiet hotel, pleasant staff but whoever designed these little rooms should not be. Not the best use of space. No drawers or hooks of any kind so nothing comes out of your suitcase. One very small shelf in the bathroom good for a toothbrush and toothpaste only. Beds okay. Decent enough price for NYC.

Room smelled extremely musty. Air quality was terrible, even with AC going. It smelled as if they had flooding or water issues. I was worried that my clothes might smell musty like the room the following day. Sink and shower didn't drain properly. I brought my concerns up with reception and they told me to come back and speak with the manager the following day. Given I was only staying there one night, this was not helpful. I would NEVER go back, even if they discounted my stay and/or offered me a free room. It was absolutely terrible. Things I could handle, but also led to an unpleasant stay: very small rooms, no privacy or sound barrier.

Stay here! If you love boutique hotels, wonderful staff, cleanliness, and a decent neighborhood make your reservations now! Oh… and BOGO drinks during happy hour! Seriously though, this place was great for the two nights we were there. We explored the city all day and night and had a comfy bed to return to when we got exhausted. The bathroom was very clean. I liked the filled shampoo and shower gel dispensers on the wall. I could go on and on about this place but I've done that on 3 or 4 other site reviews already. Just take my word for it — it's truly a GEM (pun intended)!

This hotel is a nice change of pace from run off the mill corporate hotels. The lobby is small but lovely and inviting, featuring a 4 seat coffee stand/bar and couches. Staff was friendly. And efficient. The rooms feature minimalist design. While the room was clean and comfortable, it was very basic. Would stay here again to be in the heart of Chelsea at a decent price.

The lobby and bar are small and welcoming, the staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel and rooms are well decorated, pretty and bright. And the location is great. Close to the high line and lots of restaurants.

We stayed in this hotel for a night. The staff is really very good and friendly, helpful when asked a favor or becomes a question. The rooms and the hotel in general is impeccable. The rooms are too small, but are also quite comfortable. We only had a problem with the clock in the room, which was misconfigured and us cost some hours of the day, thought that it was more early.

The rooms are quaint and in a contemporary style. They're a bit small but comfortable. Shower area is a good size with nice rainshower style heads. Staff is friendly and they have a nice but bit noisy rooftop deck (hvac vents are loud up there).

Have only stayed one night so far, but I've been very happy with the room so far (it's not huge, but then I don't need something overly large for this trip). The complimentary Wi-Fi is a little spottier than I would like. Staff has been extremely nice, seems like a very good neighbourhood.

Nice enough for the price, but I've definitely stayed in nicer places in Chelsea. Lobby is "hip", but the halls and rooms seem a bit outdated now. Room is pretty small, even for Manhattan. Lots of noise from the street. And one of my hotel peeves: house keeping knocked on my door even though I had my privacy sign up (on a non-check out day). That's just bad form.

Great room, friendly staff, free Wi-Fi. Smaller room than I'm used but isnprobably because it's an older hotel.

Staff was very friendly. Room was tiny but functional. Street noise was pretty bad, but my room was right off of 8th, so other rooms may not be as bad. Wifi was fast.

A big complaint from other reviews I saw was the size of the rooms. Yes, it is Manhattan and the rooms are small. I have stayed in various hotels in Manhattan and my room here was by far the smallest. Dim light hallways and rooms are the norm. The lobby is bright. I will not be staying at this hotel in the future.

Conveniently located in Chelsea and very reasonably priced for New York. The reception and lobby cafe staff are lovely and welcoming. The rooms are on the small side but comfortable and modern. There's a small gym in the basement.

Hotel was great, staff great, location great apart from 1 thing… hot water went off for 25 hours — still waiting for it to be repaired.

Extremely small room, good value when it was around a hundred bucks but other places can be had that are nicer for the same price.

Elasticity nothing. We booked through booking 4 rooms for 5 people overall. After swiping on our arrival credit cards for the guarantee of the payment at a distance of 4 days have been charged on one of the cards for a different amount than the one locked under warranty, without unlocking it beforehand. Following the refusal of the authorization to exceed plafond, the hotel staff blocked the access to the room of a person in the group, immediately claiming the provision of a valid credit card. Nothing was worth the insurance that there were already 3 valid credit cards and that a new guarantee would be provided within the day. Beyond the very consideration of the customer and the measure of retaliation considered too much to date my credit card, in addition to having received the regular charge of the stay, is still with the reservation of a corresponding amount By way of guarantee.
