This hotel is in a great position — close to shopping and transport. The staff were very friendly and courteous. Free coffee, cookies, fruit flavoured cold water, apples etc. All in all a very comfortable hotel.

Excellent place to stay. Staff extremely accommodating and the made us feel really welcome. This is differently the best place to stay if you are planning a trip to the San Fran.

The staff was friendly and helpful. Rooms were small but very nice. Very clean. I love the nostalgic feel of the building. Alicia behind the bar was awesome. Great omelette bar for breakfast. The location near Union Square and on the Powell Line cable cars was a plus.

Great location, at the expense of giving up many comforts. Located right on Union Square, hotel quite dated and to be renovated, noisy (earplugs are provided in the bedside table). Otherwise good cleaning (although my wife woke up one morning full of bubbles, we do not know if due to mites or some food, although she is not an allergic subject). Exceptional friendliness of the staff. Hot drinks and H24 cookies are excellent. Overall recommended.

Nice place. Clean and well kept. But a hotel with NO A/C… the place is nice but they should try the modern conveniences. I was roasting in that little room.

We loved this place. The location is perfect the amenities are so nice. Bed was comfortable and hospitality was like a small town bed and breakfast. Highly recommend.

With a bit of an aged, yet renovated San Franciscan feel, it's quaint, clean, modern, and they have water, fruit, and cookies in the lobby which goes a long way! They have all of the accommodations of a 4 star hotel! The staff are super friendly, and I'd honestly hands down stay here again. :-)

A good quality hotel in a great location. The room we had had lots of space, a good size bathroom, and a big storage room/wardrobe. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The location, next to Union Square, is excellent. There are lots of shops and cafes/restaurant's nearby.

Awesome staff, very friendly and helpful. Rooms are small, but not a problem. This is a really beautiful old hotel. It was the tallest building in San Francisco when it was built. Great location also. No A/C in the rooms. It was beautiful weather while I was there, so with the windows open it was great. If it is hot outside it could be uncomfortable.

Hi all, A great wee hotel. Wonderful staff. Wonderful breakfasts. The ladies that clean the rooms are fantastic. Great location for shopping, transport (5-10 mins walk from Powell Street BART station) and sightseeing. Complimentary coffee, tea, cookies, water and apples. Great stay here.

Very nice hotel. Great location in union square. The valley is about $40 a day which is good since other hotels charge $70. Breakfast is $15 and has a great selection.

Chancellor Hotel is an amazing hotel, very clean and very friendly staff. Room is cozy with plenty of room for all three of us. Located very close to everything we wanted, especially Chinatown, walking everwhere was a breeze. We will absolutely stay here again next time we're in San Francisco.

I would certainly stay here again. The staff are friendly, attentive, and just great overall. The hotel, and rooms, are clean and in a perfect location. The only reason I don't give 5 stars is that the water pressure isn't great. But that still isn't enough to keep me away.

Excellent location in the heart of the Union Square. On the corner you have a stop the cable car that takes you straight to fisherman Warf where you will find the Pier 39. Recommended.

Enjoyed our stay in the hotel. Generally it seems rooms are tiny and old in San Francisco but we were pleased that at this hotel the room was a decent size and felt comfortable. The room had an old fashioned charm but nothing was worn out. We had breakfast in our room one morning and that was good and not ridiculously overpriced as many hotels are. Only disappointment was some building work meant our windows were covered over and we couldn't see outside.

Staff was wonderful, they were very helpful with all of the questions I had. The location is great, you can catch the trolley down the street. The bar and restaurant were good and reasonably priced. The rooms are a little small, but overall I would definitely go back if I went to San. Fran. Again.

Just ok because of inadequate power supply for my devices in the room. No plug near to my bed (or hidden). The plug that are available don't provide standard power for my wall charger or my batteries. It took overnight to bring my cellphone from 15% to 87% and not due to my devices. Everywhere else they're charging as usual. The bathroom is small but clean. The bed is comfortable, no complain. My room has the window to the fire escape. Not too noisy but not nice, for sure. To pay 600$ for 3 nights and then no view at all.

Our family enjoyed the time we spent in SF. The Chancellor hotel provided the amenities our small family needed. Prices were decent and rooms accommodating. We booked 4 days in advance, location being perfect for walking nearby museums and art galleries.

It is good but the service fails has very good aesthetics but you have to see a little more internal.

The rooms are nice but on the smaller side. Otherwise, cozy and adequate. Don't expect a view cuz it's the City! The bed was the right firmness and plenty of pillows. No issues there. It's Central to all downtown and besides the occasional bum yelling at 3 am no problems!

A lovely hotel in an excellent location close matter of a few minutes to Union Square. Staff very friendly and helpful. The lady in the bar is great. She makes wonderful cocktails and I recommend the Pumpkin Spiced Martini! We were upgraded to a suite, thank you for that. Breakfast is good lots of choice. Why only 4stars because of no evening restaurant anytime, no bar snacks Sunday to Tuesday. Yes there are restaurants close by, but sometimes you really don't want to have to go traipsing around to find somewhere to eat, most places we discovered on a Saturday were a 2 hour wait! You do get free tea and coffee from the lobby and sometimes popcorn.

Quaint little hotel. Building is old, but not terrible. Nice little extras like candies, rubber duckies, bathe salts and a CEILING FAN (not a thing is San Francisco) and the window actually opens to a fire escape. I had a good view from my room on Union Square. 4 stars for the smoking (tobacco and marijuana) smells through the whole floor.

The hotel is lovely with a wonderful, historic feel to it and gets points for the free coffee, tea, cookies, and water available 24/7. Also a big plus for being able to get meal discounts for not having housekeeping visit your room each day.
2 critiques though. The linen on the beds is excessive and we wondered why some duvets had covers, others not? This must be a huge job for the housekeepers putting all these multiple sheets on the bed. Do the duvets without covers get wa…shed between guests? Why 2 duvets in the first place? 2nd, a better job needs to be done cleaning around the bottom of the toilets near the floor. It was kind of gross looking, compared to how spotless and clean everything else looked. Would recommend staying here though and hope to return some day in the future.

This hotel is perfection. A true gem. Perfect location, perfect service, and on and on and on. Just got back from a 4 night stay in room 1401 and my wife and I enjoyed every minute. +++ for the green rewards program. +++ for the fantastic trumpeter down on Union Square serenading us each evening. +++ for the front desk folks, so friendly and helpful. +++ for the cleanliness of the whole place. +++ for the historic charm. There are only 2 hotels that I have ever stayed in that I would be happy living in for the rest of my life. The Chancellor is one.

Stayed for 4 nights on the first stop of our Honeymoon in late August. We felt that the hotel really caught the historical essence of San Francisco. If we return to SF in the future, which we strive to do, we will certainly stay here again. Rooms were very nice and felt clean. Views onto Union Square were nice. Hearing musicians play into the late evening was very warming. Staff were super friendly and helpful from start to finish and food was also good. Location was perfect for us, as Union Square is on the doorstep and Fishermans wharf is only a 20 minute walk, or 10 minute Cable car ride, with a stop right outside.

I stayed here last night. The staff was friendly, engaging and very accommodating. I wish I had asked their names so I could give them kudos. Room was small, but clean and fresh. Bathroom tile and fixtures reminded me of my grandmother's, so it felt inviting. Once the city calmed at night, it was nice and quiet. I would stay here again!

The Chancellor is a classic-looking hotel. When you walk into the front desk and when you go to the room you seem to have suddenly regressed 40 years. However and although the decoration, furniture etc lacks renovation, the truth is that in a way it is part of the charm of the hotel, especially given that the hotel's facilities and services are present and make the stay more than comfortable. Perfect Wifi. Large bed and very comfortable.
One of the advantages of the hotel is the situation, on Powell Street (one of the most representative streets of San Francisco) and one block from Union Square, in the most commercial area of the city and well connected with other points of interest.
As an extra detail very valuable, the hotel has permanently available a coffee machine, teas and excellent homemade cookies that even make it easier for you to upload it to the room with trays, plastic cups with zipper, etc. The hotel does not have a breakfast menu, so although it has a wonderful breakfast card, it is expensive. The free coffee/tea is therefore a very profitable resource in our case the room was quite small in size although by cons had a huge wardrobe, type dressing, which makes up for quite a bit. The bathroom was also reduced and very basic. There is no air conditioning, but in our case (end of September), with the ceiling fan it was enough.

Having a nice stay at the Chancellor Hotel. The rooms are tidy and clean. We're happy to have selected a nice place in a central part of the city. My only complaint really is that the complimentary Wi-Fi was hard to connect to and maintain a connection.

A great old, historic hotel (but not in the years) in perfect location, affordable and guarded parking (20 dollars), nice staff as well as 24h free coffee and chlorine free water station.

Great we'll priced restaurant. Lovely wait staff. Much better than many offerings in Union Square. You don't have to be a guest to eat in restaurant.

Quaint little hotel with pleasant staff. Pricy for what it was, but the location is stellar. Rooms were very small but clean. No A/C so window was open the whole time and lots of white noise from whatever was behind the hotel. Woke up to the smell of bacon every morning. Restaurant was good value, though not sure what you'd have to pay to buy a smile from the staff. Enjoyed the cookies in the lobby.

The Chancellor Hotel was quaint and historic. Though the rooms were a bit small (let's call them cozy), the staff was very friendly and the bed was very comfortable. Parking was a bit outrageous, but it's the city so I suppose that's too be expected. Location was also a positive aspect of this hotel. Was within walking distance to a cool speakeasy and less touristy, more hip and youthful areas.

Location is perfect. Room is very small by today's standards, but the room is clean. Room is HOT. AC nonexistent. No room service on Tuesdays. Much like a 3-star in Europe… without the charm. Price is similar to other more modern, fun boutiques. Stay at Marker, a much nicer environment at the same $$.

This is the only place I stay when I travel to San Francisco to see the 49ers. They rooms and atmosphere are great, you also get a cute rubber ducky with every stay. They have cookies, fruit and water in the lobby everyday. It's close to public transportation BART, MUNI and Cable cars.

It was a very nice hotel. A little noisy the rooms that give on the road since they pass the cable car until late.

Right in front of you. Right on the Powell Street tramline/cable car. The location in San Francisco is spot on for shops, sightseeing and getting around the city and beyond, and of course the BART for the airport. Friendly and helpful staff will greet you, and provided a good little map of the city to get you started. The hotel is a bit old and dated but with some charm. Rooms are similar and could do with updating. Sent a message in advance for a high level room at the back… after travelling for 16 hours I knew id need some good sleep for a few days. Was at the back but unfortunately only on floor 5 which meant we were quite close to some air con units feeding other buildings, which along with the thin walls made for some difficult sleep. Fridge in room and an extensive choice of pillows to suit anyones needs. The Wifi works fantastically well, and there is always tea, coffee and iced water in the reception for the guests. Loved the old pictures of the hotel. If you want somewhere with good value and close to everything then its a good option!

Good hotel with a great location. You could hear the children in the other room screaming. Definitely a 3 star hotel and not comparable to other more expensive hotels.

Great price for such a good location. Staff are excellent, super friendly and helpfull. Rooms are clean and comfortable. This isn't a super chic or soulless chain hotel. It's more like a home from home and the people who work there feel like friends. If I returned to SF, I would try to stay here again.

This is not a chain hotel so don't come here if you like chainness. Personally I believe that lack of chainness brings enjoyable, unique character. Staff are professional, responsive and responsible. Stay on an upper floor. The neighborhood features musicians and the dinging of street cars. No air conditioning. Open the window to cool off, maybe this is a problem in summer. Nice touches like an umbrella for the rain and a candy bowl. Very reasonably priced. Close to high quality shopping and restaurants. Only a slight uphill walk from the BART, very convenient.

The price was very reasonable compared to other Union Square hotels. It is clean and the staff are very friendly. Use the concierge desk, they were great to us. TIPS: This hotel is 100 + years old. If you're looking for a modern hotel, you'll be disappointed. There is no air conditioning… And most of the time this will NOT be an issue. Simply open the window and turn on the ceiling fan. Just be aware. I have traveled quite a bit and I slept better in this hotel than most… regardless of age or price. I strongly encourage you to look at this hotel if you want to stay very close to Union Square for a reasonable price. Recommended.

This quaint hotel is in the best location in San Francisco. On the corner of Union Square on Powell Street, it is just a short walk down to Market to the tram terminus for a traditional ride to Fisherman's Wharf or a bus to the ferries to Sausalito or Alcatraz and the amazing Market Building. The rooms are small but our bathroom was huge, and we had a view of Macy's and the Cheesecake Factory from our window. (Ask for a high floor, you might get a view and you're further away from the tram bells! ). The reception staff and concierge were really friendly and helpful and there is complimentary hot drinks, iced water and cookies in reception. If you like to socialise in your hotel bar, then this probably isn't the hotel for you as it really has no atmosphere but otherwise I would thoroughly recommend it. I can't comment on the food as we had breakfast at two amazing diner/restaurants just up Powell Street to get the full American experience! The only other thing I can think of to mention is the very traditional but pristine decor.

We have stayed at the Chancellor twice, most recently this past May. We were completely satisfied each time, with the location, the amenities, the staff and even the parking situation. The rooms are, yes, small by contemporary standards, but for that very reason they are cozy and very comfortable. Large rooms contribute to the feeling that the guest is paying for unneeded extras. And the public areas made us feel comfortable. Thanks for everything.

It's been many years since my last visit but I still have great memories. The staff really care about you and the location can't be beat at twice the price.

Prior to arrival at the Chancellor I was a little concerned with the fact that the rooms had no air conditioning and the fact that it's one of the more historic buildings in the neighborhood. However, when we arrived, any concern was immediately mitigated by the most helpful and friendly staff I have ever had the pleasure to meet. The fact is, the hotel is historic, and on the older side, the rooms aren't large by any means but the friendly staff, free cookies, free coffee and the location all make this hotel a stellar find. The only suggestion to this wonderful hotel would be, when renovations are on the schedule, maybe take some room from the enormous closets and utilize if for increasing the room size. In summary, this hotel is a great find, great value and I would recommend staying here to anybody visiting the city of San Francisco.

Great location, good hotel.

The hotel was great. Even though the hotel is older, the rooms were clean and maintained well (better than some newer chain locations we have stayed in). No air conditioning but it wasn't needed as an open window and the ceiling fan kept us comfortable during the entire stay. If you do open the window, the street noise is present (but they supply disposable ear plugs for your use). Free coffee and cookies 24 hours a day made for a nice quick snack upon returning to the hotel from our jaunts around town. Offered a number of different pillow types from their pillow menu. The Union Square location was excellent and the hotel is on the cable car route. Also, public transportation was readily available within a 4 block walk. Will definitely stay there again when I return to San Francisco.

The Chancellor Hotel turns one hundred this year, but I came here for something new: the San Francisco Magic Parlor. It's a small space where you can peer closely to try to reverse-engineer the illusions. The cookies in the lobby smell freshly-baked. The meeting room on the second floor has etched glass in the doors showing the flying boats that used to take off from Treasure Island bound for China.

Just arrived at Chancellor around 2PM and had the worst experience ever. We were given a room that was inside of the building (no window facing outside), which was obviously not what I requested and paid for. When I went to the front desk asking to change a room with a window facing outside, the lady was very impatient and told me we had to wait for another hour before they can give us a room. I asked the lady for her help to look for a room because I was so tired and hungry, she was very rude and said, "Our *standard* check-in time is 3PM, so you have to wait. ". And then she told us to step aside so that she could continually check in other people (so the standard 3PM check-in time only applies to us? ). I booked this hotel because of the great reviews. However, so far, I am very disappointed and not even feeling welcomed. Not recommended.

A nice quaint hotel that is well positioned in the city. The rooms are small and a little old, but they were pretty and had lots of facilities. No air conditioning, but it didn't need it — the window was ajar for the whole of our stay, which kept the temperature perfect and it was actually really quiet for a major city. The free Wi-Fi was a bit hit-and-miss, often dropping out and requiring you to sign in again, but it was good when it was working. The breakfasts were nice and had a lot of variety, but there were no dinners offered by the hotel other than a small and uninteresting selection of bar foods, which was quite curious, and meant that we had to go elsewhere for dinner. The hotel is very well positioned, with the cable car stop literally outside the front door, lots of bus routes very close by, and the metro rail only a few blocks down the hill. A short stroll from several major shopping centers, restaurants, and other locations meant it was always pretty easy to find somewhere for dinner and somewhere to shop. The staff at the hotel were generally friendly and helpful, but note that we had to pay cash for all the tours we booked through the hotel, and the same with the MUNI travel cards. Free coffee and biscuits every day is always a positive too. Overall a fine stay in a great location.
