Great service and very nice rooms. Hotel clerk upgraded our family to a suite after seeing that we were a family of 4 staying in a one bed room. I wish they had a restaurant or bar in the hotel, possibly even a gym. Those would make it even greater. It is pet friendly too.

The lobby and the hallways are a bit dingy and honestly don't reflect the quality of the rooms, which are quite nice for a hotel of this level. The bathroom was fully updated if a little on the small size, and tall people would LOVE the shower which has a double lever adjustable arm. The bed was fine, with plugs and lights on both sides. In summary: a well located discount hotel that will deliver a pleasant stay for the price.

Hotel was nice and is in a great Central location. That being said, front desk service was horrible. We called in advance the day before to see if we could possibly check in early since our flight arrived at 8AM and check in wasn't until 3PM. There was no attempt to try to do anything for us. We were told they would contact house keeping and call when it was ready. We called back twice after that throughout the day only to get hung up on TWICE! The third time we finally didn't get hung up on they said that housekeeping was on lunch and had to wait until 3PM. (This was around noon) This hotel lacks sincerity, empathy and quality customer service. Oh and house keeping came knocking on our door the next morning at 9AM so seems like they were available during that time after all.

First of all, the hotel is a historic building… it's old. Get over that. The rooms are nicely furnished, the bathrooms are nicely remodeled and modern and the staff is very friendly and helpful. I am only giving 4 stars because my room was stuffy and there was no AC. I had to open the window to let cooler air in but then there was nothing between me and all of the street noise. I think this could be remedied without harm to historic structure. Would I stay here again? Probably.

Yea the rooms are small and cozy, but you are at the center of everything. Service and staff were splendid. Can't find a better experience for the cost. Wouldn't hesitate to stay here again!

I usually book Best Western, but I would not recommend this hotel. The room was adorable in a modern, tiny way. I booked a room with two beds and the only one available had really small beds. There was a desk perfect for getting work done and USB outlets for plugging in phones. So it would have been great except for one BIG problem. I am new to California and this was my first time booking a hotel in San Francisco. I booked online, but there was no specific parking instructions in my booking confirmation. When I got there I realized there was nowhere to park at the hotel. There are tons of one-way streets and it can get confusing if you don't know the area. Anyways, I called them and they told me what garage to park in and said that they would "validate" my ticket. You have to then walk a little ways (that was a big deal with luggage and two kids). I checked in and it was not until a week later that I realized my credit card was charged $40 more than the price of the room. I called to ask why and they told me that was the parking garage fee for one night. No big deal, but I disliked the fact that they did not tell me that they were charging me $40/night for parking. I told the manager and later their customer service rep and they both pretty much told me that this was a cheap price for parking in San Francisco. They missed the point! I did not mind paying $40 parking. I just did not like them charging my credit card without telling me first.

The location is good, the place is clean, the hotel is small, the lobby is very small and not very decorated, the service is not very friendly at the reception, the rooms are small, although clean and comfortable, the bathrooms are small but clean, very expensive for what it offers, there are better options in the area.

Great experience for the price! Pros: Very clean, updated room. The location if right next to Union Square & several public transportation stops. The beds were surprisingly comfortable. Lots of places to eat and shop nearby. Cons: The rooms are VERY small. This didn't come as a surprise to us as we know it's difficult to find "normal" sized hotel rooms downtown. The walls are pretty thin, so if you're a light sleeper like me you'll want earplugs. Overall a great experience here! I would recommend the stay!

Hotel staff were very courteous and helpful, the place was very clean, and the location is great for seeing all that downtown SF has to offer. The train station is just a short 10 minute walk away. On the downside, it's very obvious when a neighbor is flushing their toilet or maybe just turning on a faucet. I could hear the"pipe noises" from my room. It's not the worst thing ever, it's just a little jarring. Also there's only 1 elevator, so you could possibly be waiting for it a while. Lastly, as someone who loves a good view from the window, my view of the brick wall of the building right next to the hotel wasn't exactly the best. Overall for the price, I think it was worth it. I wouldn't mind staying again, but I'll probably look at other options first next time.

Quaint Hotel 50 m from the stop "Sutter" the cable car, walking distance to Union Square only 3 minutes. Everything was clean, my view from the window however against a brick wall. Shower was nice spacious. Morning has free coffee in the lounge area.

The rooms were very small, but designed extremely well. The space is well thought out so there's a place for everything. The queen size room is adequate for a couple. The hotel staff was very helpful. I ended up with two separate reservations for my entire stay and they put me in the same room for both so I didn't have to check out and back in again. The location is super convenient, one block from union square with a Walgreens and 7-11 right across the street. I would definitely stay here again.

This place is quite small but everything was very clean and tidy. Exactly what we needed since we were exploring all day anyways. Great location! Close to everything! That's probably my favorite part. Will look into this place again next time I come to sf!

The front desk staff is helpful. The lobby is very nice. The rooms are small, but sufficient amenities. Could use a mini fridge. Amazing bed. Parking off-site. Would stay here again, so close to Union Square, BART, Market Street and a myriad of restaurant options within walking distance.

Older but remodeled hotel in a convenient location within 2 blocks of Union Square. My room on the 8th floor was fairly small, but was clean, comfortable, quiet and made efficient use of the limited space. The hotel has an arrangement with a parking garage on Bush Street (one block up), which worked reasonably well for me, as I had a rental car.

We enjoyed a great stay here at Cartwright! No hassle in check in/out; super fast service. The lobby is cozy and the rooms are clean, nice and comfortable. The Staff was extra nice and goes out of their way to make your stay wonderful. They always have a ready smile & very helpful. It would be an incomplete review if I did not thank Edward, the manager, and his staff Ramon for making our stay awesome and unforgettable. We will definitely come back!

Lovely little hotel in a great location. Room was small as you would expect in San Francisco, but clean and comfortable. Plenty of cool restaurants and bars in close vicinity. Would recommend if planning to stay in downtown San Francisco.

Great location a couple of blocks away from Union Square. Rooms are small, but stylish and sufficient for 1-2 guests. Lobby is simple and comfortable. A great spot for a quick trip into the city.

We were very pleased with this hotel. Very central location. The cable car station directly in front of the hotel entrance.
You don't really need a car. Those who still have a car can park in the area unfortunately very very expensive (about 45 dollars per night). Beware, a lot of cars are broken up in the city!

The staff is very accommodating and friendly. The reception is always busy and gladly advises the guests.
The room is tastefully decorated with a double bed, a "makeup chamber":D (large mirror) and a very very small bathroom: (There is unfortunately no space between the toilet and the washbasin and to get into the shower you have to go over the toilet.
Another negative point are the milk glass doors of the bathrooms, i. E. Spectators in the hallway to the toilet are free.
Nevertheless, the bathroom is always top cleaned. In the room there is a fan, air conditioning and television. Also a radio alarm clock, enough storage space. Attention, no safe!
We were very pleased and recommend the hotel for a great stay in San Francisco. :)

I enjoyed a great stay here at Cartwright! The lobby is stylish and the rooms are nice. Staff is extra nice and goes out of their way to make your stay wonderful. They give you Restaurant recommendations and directions. One problem I had was that the door to the bathroom in the rooms have sliding doors that don't lock which kinda ruins any privacy. Otherwise I had a nice stay here at The Cartwright!

This small hotel has a great deal of charm with a small but well-looked-after lobby and comfortable rooms. The front desk staff were kind and affable, offering to help in any way they could. My room wasn't huge but it didn't feel small; they made great use of space. However, the best attribute is the location. Only a few blocks from Union Square, much of what you want to see is within 20 minute walking distance, which is great if you like to walk cities like I do. All in all, I really enjoyed my stay and it is on my list of places to stay when I come back to San Francisco.

Staff was so helpful and friendly! It's amazing what a difference that can make in your stay. The room was very clean, comfy and neat. It was small but they made a good use of space. I'd recommend.

This place was amazing. Some of the best employees and customers service I've had in a long time. These people genuinely care for the guests. They have many services, all organic soaps, and coffee. Wonderful lush beds. I HIGHLY recommend this place and don't think I'll ever stay anywhere else in SF from now on. This place is the best. Oh and the concierge that was on duty June 18 over night was so amazing! Sorry I forgot his name. All the staff we came into contact with during our stay made it so amazing. I highly recommend this place!

I loved the location of the hotel, which compensates for the small size of the room. The staff were very friendly and always ready to answer our questions. And the free coffee in the morning is always appreciated!

Note* are you over 6ft tall? this might not be the right hotel for you. The beds for single persons are so tiny that 5.5 ft felt little. location: perfect place to stay.

If you can sleep through the sound of an ancient heater boiling to life a few times during the night, this place isn't so bad. Its proximity to the Tenderloin bring the price down a bit.

We loved our experience at the Hotel Cartwright. It's located in a very safe/popular area of Union Square. The Staff was incredibly helpful and friendly (special thanks to Concierge Kevin). I had read reviews knocking the size of the rooms. They were definitely small, but I had to admire the efficient use of space. The rates were very reasonable and I loved that they could use the space creatively to accommodate a lower price. Parking also seemed to be the most reasonable in the area. We were able to walk with ease to the Ferry Building and Fisherman's Warf. The BART train to the airport was also very easy (we only had a car for a couple days). Very clean and up-to-date rooms. We'll be back for sure.

We had no idea where to stay in SF so we threw a dart and ended up here. Room was relatively cheap (under 150/nt), and for that it's totally fine. Area ended up being a bit too hectic and parking and driving in the area was a nightmare (similar to downtown DC, Chicago, etc. ). That's my main reason for knocking a star. Room was small and utilitarian, bathroom small but clean. Had a huge closet with a dresser which was wierd for a nightly room. But overall decent choice for staying in the heart of SF right on the transit tracks.

Clean basic rooms in a good location. If you get this place for a reasonable price it's a good value.

I found the staff to be very helpful, the room small, but neat and clean, and the location very convenient. The complimentary coffee, iron, and hair dryer were very handy.

Small, "individual" rooms. Breakfast there were none, for a Starbucks coupon. Starbucks is right around the corner, and just for a cup of coffee, Organgejuice and Bagle with Creamcheese is it enough. The hotel is very centrally located and has easy access to the pier, Harbour, etc. The service is good and the rooms are clean (unfortunately slightly wind-permeable in the bathroom). For a 2 — 3 night stop it enough in any case.

Stayed for three nights and the hotel delivered everything we needed. Yes the rooms are basic but the location and helpfulness off the staff (especially Kevin who was awesome) made it a great experience.

Cheap and central and easy to get to from the airport but that's where the good ends. Stayed there for 2 nights and wouldn't recommend to stay longer. The room had a view to a brick wall. The bath shower head didn't look clean (something red hangig out of it) same with the curtains, the windows and the corners of the carpet. All night something (maybe the neighbour house ac or so) turned on and off and made a lot of noise. The bed was good but the noise disturbed my sleep. And the staff is not friendly as some claimed here. Maybe they had a bad day but I wouldn't call them helpful. More arrogant and very short answers. All together a cheap, central place but don't expect anything. I guess you can find better cheap places.

So, the beds are very comfortable, the linen is high quality and the rooms are quiet. I heard they are renovating the whole hotel gradually which is great. The rooms on the 2nd floor are a little small but kept well and have air con. Once the place has been updated it will be a fantastic hotel worthy of 5 stars. The lobby is very nice, the prices are reasonable and once they get their bar up and running this will be a great place to stay. Whenever I come back to SF on business this is the place i'll be staying. Additionally the staff are very friendly, helpful and happy; the jazz music in the lobby is a nice touch and adds to the whole experience. To top it off, it's location with regard to Union Square and the city centre is great and certainly offers real value. OH, the Wi-Fi is good (compared to most US hotels i've stayed in) ; good enough to watch a film/ do a video conference/ make VOIP calls.
