Nestled in the serene foothills of Gangtok, Do Drul Chorten Monastery stands as a striking symbol of Buddhist culture and spirituality. Built in 1945 by Trulshik Rinpoche, an eminent lama of the Nyingma tradition, this stupa is one of the most prominent landmarks in Sikkim. Its golden pinnacle gleams against the Himalayan skyline, captivating visitors with both its architectural elegance and profound religious significance. The monastery houses a rich collection of Buddhist scriptures, paintings, and sacred objects, offering a deep insight into Tibetan Buddhism.
When planning a visit to Do Drul Chorten, it’s best to arrive early in the day to avoid crowds and fully absorb the tranquil atmosphere. The surrounding prayer wheels, which visitors can spin clockwise as a form of meditation, add an immersive tactile experience to your exploration. Keep in mind that photography inside the main prayer hall may be restricted out of respect for the religious practices. Seasonal considerations also play a role: spring and autumn are ideal times to visit, with pleasant weather and clearer skies enhancing your experience, while monsoon months bring heavy rains that can make travel difficult and the monastery gardens less accessible.
