Reviews of St Christopher's Edinburgh Old Town
Great rooms fresh bedding every day good shower rooms friendly staff always happy to help. Worth the stay.
They shouldn't kick people out on the streets because they wrote a bad review if that's an honest one.
The hostel facilities are clean and great (on the new side at least) — but there is no social atmosphere whatsoever! If you're a solo traveller, this isn't the place for you : — (
Had excellent time. The staff was friendly and the Hostel is in a great location.
A sheer lack of customer service at front of house level. Called in about lost property last Friday on the phone and was told to send an email. Then questioned why I had to email while I’m on the phone and then was then told by the manager on duty known as Jennifer couldn’t “look for my lost property while having to check in 20 guests at the reception at the same time” in a cheeky and condescending manner. I then visited the venue an hour later to no avail while the lost property system was quite unorganized. The hostel has potential to be great but they hire they wrong staff members to implement good customer service levels. A lack of friendliness and the double reception at the bar then to left is an absolute nuisance. You got to one area then your are lead to the other check in desk while nobody is there. I hope top level management can see this and value customer feedback. I’ve stayed at the branch in Barcelona and Edinburgh multiple times but it seems the Australian staff in Edinburgh have lost interest in their role. This needs to change for a well known brand such as St Christopher’s.
Really recommend!
Lovely, friendly, fun and cheap!
Lots of specials and extra stuff
FREE WASHING MACHINES! What the?
I am a an old bird of 55 but wasn't made to feel old (even got I'D 'd what a compliment or what a great sense of humour the bar staff have) beds comfy immaculately clean great bar great food great location… 'i'll be back' in the words of Arnie.
A pub with a hostel attached. No kitchen. Expensive luggage storage option. Decently clean place to sleep.
DISAPPOINTED I paid a lot of money for this place and it ended far from my expextations. The room was nice, the bathroom was fairly clean (though showers are very uncomfortable). But there were a couple of things I really hated: THEY DON'T HAVE A KITCHEN. I'm paying more than 30£ a night for a hostel with NO KITCHEN. This is really outrageous. But of course, they have a bar downstairs with discounts for guests. Guess what? I don't want your discount. I want a damn kitchen because people staying at hostels always have a small budget and we want to eat spaghetti and rice and spend 20£ a week in food. We don't want your 8£ burger. Plus they only have a very small fridge in the chill zone which is definitely not big enough. no kitchen, no self made breakfast. you have to pay 3£ for the most mediocre breakfast in town. the elevator is not working. I am sleeping on the 4th floor. Good luck carrying your suitcase. My advice: go to Castle Rock. Same price, way better service.
Nice place and the staff is great, very friendly and helpful. It can feel a bit overcrowded in the rooms and common places. It isn't the cleanest place you've seen, but it's alright.
Love this place and been so many times but find it unfair now minimum of 2 nights. So disappointing have to book elsewhere when never been an issue. Spoke to staff who said it’s the way it is now which is disappointing.
Perks: Discounted food at the bar below the hostel. Food and drinks are bar below were great, and was convenient to meet people staying at the hostel before going out for the night. Friendly staff, well informed. Right next to the trains and tram and right off the Royal Mile. Location was the best perk. Negatives: The accommodations could have been better, my bed was a brick and it was unbearably hot in our room. If the weather is over 70F, prepare for a hot an sweaty night. You had to pay for bag drop off, unlike most hostels that let you just drop off your stuff before you check in. The showers didn't have a place to put your stuff down (like a curtain to separate your dry clothes from the shower water. )
Best hostel I've ever stayed in. Very clean and fantastic location. Right next to the train station and just a few miles from Edinburgh Castle. I highly recommend this hostel. Love the 4 bunk women only option. They have large lockable cages under the bunks. Felt very safe and accommodated. And as a bonus you stay right above a wonderful bar! The price is great and the staff was super helpful and friendly!
Great place to stay for light travellers. Bathrooms are small, but the rooms are clean and quiet otherwise. Lovely pub and great chicken wings!
It's a good hostel, located in the middle of the city. The location and the staff are the best. Breakfast is available and okay, but it's very small and can get crowded soon. The rooms are okay. I stayed in a female four bed dorm. The room did not have individual reading lights, outlets and a curtain was missing. The last thing was fixed by the staff. The beds and showers were fine and if something was wrong the reception would fix it as fast as possible. I would stay again, nice place.
Appalling Staff after Stayng previously for 2 Nights and I kept myself to Myself and Provided my Passport Etc This Time After Booking Via Hostelworld The Women Behind Bar Just Made up an Excuse I had to Show A PASSPORT again I had Check in Everything I was Polite She said I couldn't Stay APPALLING NEVER STAY HERE. Ok doing that if had been rude etc I wasnt. Avoid at all costs.
It does its job, you can shower and sleep but don't expect to be comfortable or have space. Rooms are incredibly small, I'd only go back if it were the only place in the neighborhood (great location). Staff is amazing, tho.
Very good location The Little Bunks.
Great hostel. Had a great time chatting / going out with other travelers that I met from the hostel.
Amazing brand new beds and showers. Super close to train and bus station, walking distance to every attraction. Wonderful staff.
Stayed there for a couple of nights a few years ago. The place is not the cleanest but it's got charm and it's very handy since it's rightbout the station.
Although accomadations were clean, we were packed in like sardines with up to 12 people to one bathroom. Barely any room to leave your bag by the foot of the bed, which are shacky bunk beds 3-beds high. The only place to "hang out" is at the bar as the chill room acts as their luggage room and is often extremely overcrowded with bags. Thankfully staff was nice and friendly but I would still not recommend it to anyone seeking and comfortable stay.
The managers are super friendly, the úbicacion could not be better and the prices are super affordable…
Beds are comfortable and equipped with eu sockets (which is cool bc I forgot to take an adapter).
The rooms are pretty small (I was in the one with 12 beds) but it doesnt really matter — youre supposed to only sleep there. Staff was pretty friendly but not as friendly as in Paris Gare Du Nord. Great location, 50m to the airport bus stop.
In Edinburgh I have been twice, and both in this hostel. The price is right, the attention is great and the breakfast is included. This centric and all the tourist sites you can walk. The tourist bus is located on the bridge across the street, just like K the train station and the bus that comes from the airport. The atmosphere in the hostel is amazing, you have for lunch and dinner, a bar and a living room with TV, board games…
If you're looking for an excellent location, go here but don't expect anything extraordinary. The staff was very nice but the welcome area is tiny and doubles as a bar. The rooms were very cold and honestly, did not do a great job of noise control. Perhaps a special case, but I woke up several times during the night because of late party-goers and outside street noise.
Filthy, filthy, old, no kitchen! The room for 12 people measures 10mts sq. No light, no windows or curtains can be opened, free lockers have broken locks, impossible to keep anything. I was so disgusted that I paid and didn't use it, which I don't usually do. There is much cheaper and better hostel. I don't recommend it. I put 1 star because there is no less.
I have a friend who is in that hotel this week and the deal is not the best. Nor do they tell you about the breakfast hours or give it to arrive 5 mn before the kitchen closes. While in the queue he ran out of breakfast because at 10 o'clock in the morning they close and those who are in line are left hungry. I often treat the clientele, you don't do that anywhere. The most normal thing would be to take care of those already waiting. Even officials don't do that.
Nothing advisable, I put a star because you can not put — 1 thumbs down for this hostel!
So it's a hostel… This I remember because I paying £70 a day x a double I expected QCS in more cleaning and services… CMQ is in a great location (a few steps from the colony of 100 the shuttle that connects the airport with the center) and then you save the costs of transport (CMQ if you have to use the means make a day ticket, £4) and with a great breakfast, included in the price Even though booking told me I had to pay it £3 extra. It is then conventioned with the bar Belushi and if you want to eat QCS you will have 25% discount on the dishes (the Scottish breakfast is excellent and x £5 is not found anywhere else).
Great location and great service. Maybe a little better the facilities but overall good. I recommend it.
Great rates, friendly staff, good accomodations. I quite enjoyed my discounted breakfasts at Belushi's. The one negative is that the shower was hard to figure out (how to get the warm water).
The hostel is in an amazing position, just a couple of minutes away from the total mile and Weverley station. It's clean, tidy and offers a lot of deals on food and tours.
The bunks are not two beds as in all the hostels but three, so in your bed you can only lie down, you can't sit on it. The beds have curtains. Clean bathrooms. The staff at the front desk were super friendly. Normal breakfast, coffee, juice, toast. Free laundry. It has no kitchen, just a microwave and an electric kettle, but the lounge where it is and that is where you could eat something this super dirty always and there are no cutlery or glasses or anything you can use, although when we ordered a plate and a spoon at reception we borrowed it. The lounge for breakfast is super small so most likely you have to have breakfast stopped. The elevator is super slow, they should repair it.
Honest hostel without infamy and without praise.
The room we went to was very good because it is only 6 beds. Although the pillows are a bit inconsistent, the bed itself is very good. There is a bathroom with shower in the room. The hostel is clean although it is between two bars. Breakfast costs £3 If you book indirectly. Very central, and some of the employees speak very good Spanish.
Paid for a private double which was very basic, and on arrival I was greeted by an extremely cold room and took me 2 hours to get the room to an OK temperature. Ceiling light was also inop on arrival so had to wait for the maintenance guy to replace (he was very good). Location was fantastic and the bar downstairs was reasonable with good evening entertainment.
There are 2 bars right between the hostel and on Friday night, if you are not into partying, you need good earplugs and sleep pills to be able to sleep. A lot of people come here to party. Breakfast is barely eatable. The crew doesn't care much about their customers. I definately won't come back! Another hostel nearby is less expensive and moré quiet.
Amazing experience in Edinburgh. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming to anyone who walked in and out the doors. The bar has a great chilled atmosphere for anyone that wants to be alone or to have a friendly chat. Would highly recommend.
It's a fine hostel, however it could be better. As a pro, it is situated in a great place, right next to the city center and a railway station. However, the rooms are very small and a bit too cosy. Furthermore, the place where people have breakfast is tiny, so one should go downstairs to have breakfast in advance.
Excellent location, close to the station and the main streets. The rooms are a little small but the value for money is very good. The staff are friendly and helpful. It is connected internally with two bars where you have discounts.
Price performance and location perfect.
The rooms are small, although the beds are comfortable, it is difficult to remove the trunks from under the beds because the Rellijas are somewhat overdue. The bathroom is very better, especially the floor and the smell. Breakfast is three pounds and they offer quite a variety for that price. Beware if you have already paid to make the reservation is proof or may try to charge you a second time.
Ochotný personál. A super postele s nabiječkou. Místnost pro relax a úschovnu zavazadel. //excellent staff and comfortable beds with a charger and a great relaxing room where you can hide your luggage Recommended!
Nice dormitory, common room, locker facility and best part is its location, it's central and very close to Waverly station and Edinburgh coach station is also at walking distance.
The first night we live 4 people dormitory, did not expect to see the feeling is prison
But it doesn't matter, it's possible that the colors are all grey.
But I and friends find a good resistance can not find a socket!? No way
Then go down and ask the clerk, and then the clerk helps us to find a bit at the bedside, to move the bed first
The bathroom is normal, Wi-Fi is common and can be played on the machine.
The second night we live in 6 girls dormitory, feel more normal, every bed has a socket
I don't know if we're on the day of the music festival.
The last thing I thought was getting drunk in the middle of the night.
Luckily, a girl drove him away, but he felt that the security guard at the Green Brigade was not good enough.
Although the downstairs is even a bar, but can not be allowed to walk in the corridor.
It's really just bad.
But compared to our first night is no problem, I really do not know whether there is a holiday is a big drink so.
Biggest advantage of this hostel is that it's right next to Waverley (train station) and many Edinburgh destinations (Edin. Castle, Elephant Room, Scott Monument). My group (4 of us) stayed in a 12-person room, which was overall 'alright' but a bit cramped since other guests left a lot of their stuff in the middle of the floor instead of in lockers or to the sides of the room. There's quite a bit of pedestrian/vehicle traffic at night and both are quite audible as rooms face outward toward the street. This hostel appeared a bit dated, the overall atmosphere can be described as "grungy" (especially the bathroom and common room. The staff was exceptionally welcoming and agreeable. For the budget-wise traveler this hostel will meet your needs.
Very nice hostel at a good price. Excellent location right near the train station and just down the hill from the royal mile. Met some really cool people in my room.
Next to the train station, very convenient when it's raining! Good location to explore high street. Not the greatest hostel I've been to but it got the job done.
Enough for one night. A little bit dirty. Perfect location. Useful USB plugs in the bed.
Easy check in. £2 key deposit and free breakfast if you book on their website. The room was fine but smelled awful. I got a top bunk by the window so it was bearable. Bring your own lock for lockers in the room.
Audrey made this place! So. To cut a long story short, me and the boiz were having a seedy breakfast but then all of a sudden, we ran out of ham! After a brief check of the time, it became apparent that the breakfast serving times were infact drawing to a close, with only seconds before the end of service. Anyone else in the hospitality business would have acknowledged that the serving hours had elapsed, however, Audrey, saviour of the ham walked right up to me and graced me with the heartwarming offer of "Would you like some ham? " I would definitely recommend this hostel to anyone planning on staying in the Edinburgh region. Xx.
Would stay again! Stayed all over in edinburgh and this definently provides the best facilities for the best price. Great location right next to thw train station. Great beds with each bed on the bunk having own privacy curtains, charge ports and lights which is a god send. Very clean and secure, and free breakfast is the cherry on top. Greatest staff ever so helpful and friendly.
Pro: Very well located and I made some really great friends here on the free walking tour. Some staff were really awesome. Con: No kitchen facilities. Only a mini-fridge and microwave. "Chill out room" had no windows and was dark/drab. Rooms were meh. Not super cleanly but not horrifically dirty either. Some staff were borderline rude.
Location is really good. Walking time to the royal mile is about 2 mins. The hostel is opposite the train station and buses near by to travel in and around the city. A free walking tour was really good. However the suggested meet time was 10.20 to walk 2 mins up to meet other hostel tours which started at 11am. Made planning annoying in the morning. The room we stated in had no light working so made it extremely difficult. One flickering lamp was provided for the room which wasn't enough light for the room in the dark. By the second night the bulb had been replaced, but we were not notified and so continued to use the lamp. Only way we found out was the empty bulb box was left on a top bunk bed. The room wasn't the cleanest hostel I've stayed stand some parts I wish I hadn't seen or hadn't caught my eye. I probably wouldn't stay again if given the chance to visit Edinburgh again.
Cheap hostel with good breakfast. Very good location: next to the train and bus station, and very close to the Centre.
Friendly staff, free Wi-Fi, cheap and cheerful.
Altogether lovely. Interesting on the ground floor the pub.
Location is great. Just off the royal mile, a few minutes walk from the castle. Rooms are well kept, a little tight for space. Staff and service were amazing.
Good bars and facilities — good value for the money, but the beds were uncomfortable and the shower was a bit weak. Better than I expected for a hostel. Friendly and helpful staff.
Was not completely taken by this hostel. I had spent the last couple of months staying in some wonderful hostels and I expected this to be nothing less but it was unfortunately. The facilities itself were great and I had a very comfortable stay but some of the staff came across as unapproachable and at times quite rude. Though of course as with these things there was some wonderful staff but it's the bad stuff that tends to stick with you more than the good stuff. The food and cocktails were pretty disgusting — I recommend you eat out. Though the free internet downstairs was good it would've been nice for it to reach the upper levels for when sending an email home and so forth. The location was amazing and you couldn't pick a better spot. Overall I probably wouldn't stay here again but served as a nice base for a couple of days and I got my money's worth!
We went here with school and had a great time. There's a nice lounge, spacious rooms and tasty meals. It's also very close to the center of the city so you can walk wherever you want to go.
Comfortable, convenient location, and almost cost nothing. Clean sheets and clean bathrooms. Cramp and elevator wasnt working but so worth the price. Enjoyed it a lot.
It was damp, smelly, dirty, loud and crowded. My door wouldn't stay shut, the elevator was broken, and the security doors on my floor didn't work, anyone could enter. The floorboards were duct-taped together. I didn't even stay the night. I will say that the manager was extremely professional and kind.
I am rating this place high as I not only stayed here but worked here too. The management were awesome which made the place fun, and the other staff were all travelers or cool locals so it was an epic experience. Plus living just upstairs meant that I could maximize the sleep in. Accommodation wise the hostel was above average and was pretty massive. Many mixed size dorms to suit different budgets and everything you needed such as social / chill out rooms. The bars had guitar hero on Playstation and they did karaoke nights and cheap drinks nights so there was always entertainment going on. Also the kitchen did some decent cheap eats. Overall I was stocked to work and stay here. Nuff said.
Just check out yesterday. I gave 4 stars for the hostels. The beds and toilet are very clean, neat and tidy. My friends and I got the 10 female room. Staffs are friendly. Near to the tourist attraction. bad points; Wi-Fi can't connect in the room. I was in the 3rd floor. Not really suitable for group as you will have problems in communication. We have to tip toe and whisper in order to not disturb the others. Uncomfortable smell around the reception and hostels. 2 nights could be the maximum. It is worth by the way. Recommend to all.
Such a shame to write this as we had great hopes it would live up to the sister hostels in the chain in Madrid but I have to advise other travellers that this was a nightmare. The location and staff are amazing. I cant fault that but everything else was poor — dire. The bed were hard, linen smelt musty and had stains and rips, the window cleaners came at 6am banging on the windows, the old sash windows that did open had to be propped open by a water bottle, one girl told me she opened one in her dorm and it came off the runners, half hanging out over the street below — 2 floors up! she stayed clinging on to the pane until a member of staff came up to relieve her. there is no Wi-Fi on the top 2 floors so you have to go down to the bar or chill out area to get Wi-Fi. Not great for the digital lives we lead. We first stayed in a 4 bed female dorm — room 33. It was tiny, cramped and smelt of musty dampness. The floors were horrible, little stones, dust, hair and other grime, defiantly hadn't seen a mop or broom in a long time. Bathroom was not great either, the shower head constantly turned to the wall as it was secured properly, the pole came off in my hands when I tried to reposition the head to wash my hair. The extractor fan made a horrific loud droning noise but did little to take away smell or steam. The galley way between the beds was not wide enough for two so 4 women had to stand at either end of the room so one could pass by — not great.
Good hostel in perfect location. Clean rooms, friendy staff and a nice athmosphere.
Toilet wasn't working right, hot tap wouldn't go at all, shower jumped from hot to cold by itself, double bed was two singles pressed together, and the heating wouldn't work. Whole place could have been a lot cleaner. Would not recommend.
Located pefectly only a few meters from high street. Friendly staff, good place to have fun and party. Rooms are very small and the breakfast is very basic, self service with plastic tableware. Too expensive.
Perfect hostel. Decent food, cheap, comfortable bedrooms. Nice staff.

RespondThe truth is that when we got there we were surprised the fact that reception was at the same bar from the bar, is a mere anecdote, what happened to us, is that we are a partner Madrid, which informed us that rooms that les had provided were not anything clean and not even provided them sheets, to hear it, we went to ask if we could look at the room as in theory we had assigned and they denied us the resounding visiting, we commented if we wanted look at the room we had that to "check in" if not I us gustava than we could leave. Grace is that you clause it "check inn" was that, if you sign, by obligation you have to pay 2 nights stay! even you do not step on the room or half a second. So I recommend that you look another hotel, this not worth nothing at all.
