A great setting next to the Wye. Looked a little dated in some areas inside. Food was extortionate, but faultless. £16.95 for a burger and chips was more than a bit steep. It was homemade and tasted great, but still a lot of money. They had fillet steak at £33. I can buy a 28 day oak aged fillet for £5.50 retail at Aldi, so you are talking £2 retail. £33? Really? Ambience can only be charging so much extra! No wonder The Saracens Head next door was packed and this place was not!

Recommended by the Saracen's head pub as they had no space. Great food and location. Quick service for busy sunny day. Sat outside in the sun by the river. Awesome. More expensive than other places but must be due to location.

The location and food were excellent but the room was very basic and not what I was expecting. Bed very uncomfortable. Staff were a bit abrupt and didn't speak unless they had to, apart from the waiter that was on duty on our last day. He was nice. Hence I give them 3 stars and won't be going back.

All 4 of us really wanted to love it, but although it is in a perfect setting (beautiful views) and the garden area was 2nd to none, the hotel staff were lacking somewhat. There seemed a lack of professionalism and indeed enthusiasm. With the right training and the right manager at the helm, this could be extraordinarily good! We all felt let down and neglected throughout our short stay (1 night). We're very used to staying in 4 star hotels and this just didn't cut it. The service was very amateurish, the skirting boards in the rooms were covered in a thin layer of furry dust. Room 3 and 5. At breakfast there was a chip left on the carpet of the dining room, obviously from the previous night — The staff just weren't attentive enough throughout our entire stay, we kept having to find them for any attention and most seemed to be dressed a little too casually for their star rating. What a shame! I just hope they read this and make some improvements, as they could have an idyllic gold mine there, that anyone would wish to escape to for a short relaxing break.

Beautiful place. Next to the river. Our room had a view of the river which was lovely. The only issue is parking being charged at 6 pounds for 24hrs even if you're staying at the lodge. We also found their food a lil bit on the expensive side.

Booked a night stay after having afternoon tea with my daughter. Located in a lovely spot. All the staff were friendly and food lovely. Room basic & bit dated that's only reason I gave 4 star. Had fantastic weather so very busy but enjoyed very much and will be going back again.

Really busy weekend but the staff coped so well. We only had sandwiches and they were lovely, washed down nicely with a good bottle of sauvinon.

Such a beautiful location and dog friendly place. Great selection of drinks on offer. You do have to pay to park at all times of the day, which is quite expensive. Staff are great and very friendly.

Nice enough food, but overpriced and only one vegetarian option. Bit disappointing on a Sunday when roast is available, a vegetarian option would be much more inclusive.

Lovely cream teas but tea room was lacking in any character. Also the room we sat in to have tea had large windows with a beautiful veiw of the river but the view was blocked by ugly vertical blinds.

The location is beautiful, set next to the river and with a walking trail from the car park along the river. The pub has a good sized garden and plenty of seating. It's also dog friendly, inside and out. The service was pretty poor. Staff watched me walk in and go to the bar for a drink but no-one came. Had to ring the bell, for one of the staff I walked past at the front to come serve. I figured it was a one off, but the same happened when I walked back in for a second drink.

Amazing location spotless rooms really dog friendly we will definitely recommend it and we will be back. Thank you for a lovely time.

I paid £55 for a room on Groupon which I thought was a good price for what we got breakfast in the morning as well was good never had evening meal. Staff were amazing helped us with all we needed a young lady called Danielle I think her name was really piolete and helpful.

The location is amazing, but It is very expensive for the services that they provide. We went with our dog and they charged us £75 for a dog smelly room; we did the booking and in their emai with booking website they did not mention £15 charge for the dog so We complained and they gave us £5 back. The employees are friendly. The breakfast was good with juices and a good variety selection. The food in the restaurant is very meaty, no vegetarian options. The restaurant expensive as well. Fish and chips with a pint £20.

Stayed overnight with our toddler in tow. The staff were really accommodating and the room was all we could have asked for. Unfortunately the food left a lot to be desired and was extremely expensive for what it was. A bit of a disappointment as we had been told by family that the food was excellent! I would definitely recommend a stay but perhaps take a wander along the river to some of the other local venues for dinner.

Location is beautiful. Food is lovely although a little overpriced, there was a mix up with some pricing but was then rectified. Maybe we just caught them on a bad day. Would recommend to others. Head up the side of the hotel for a steep but short walk to yat rock for a stunning view!

Very nice place, very friendly and obliging, dogs welcome not just put up with, a separate dining area where you can take them in with you, clean and comfortable and brilliant food, nothing is too much trouble.

Large and improved hotel in wonderful location on the river Wye. Bar and restaurant Ok but rather bland and impersonal. Rooms large and clean but need a little TLC. Good value but other nearby venues offer improved experience.

Staff were friendly but a little disorganised. Room was basic, and maintenance seemed lacking. Disappointed not what we were expecting. Spectacular place though with amazing walks.

Stayed for 3 nights. Rooms were nice, a little small but good if your just there to sleep. Suoer location. Views and surrounding area is fab. Food is good, Just a bit expensive for what else is on offer in the surrounding area of coleford… overall a very nice place. Thumbs up.

Excellent place, the surrounding area is beautiful and breakfast here was great. Free parking is a bonus as it's best to leave your car where it is for the duration. Staff are lovely and helpful, and the facilities are clean and adequate. Only thing I would say is the rooms are looking a bit tired and need of a lick of paint, and the restaurant is extortionately expensive — would recommend 'Ye Old Ferry Inn' for dinner, just grab the ferry across, runs till about 10:30pm.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Royal Lodge. We stayed in a lovely four poster bed and the service was excellent. The food at breakfast and dinner was superb and the staff were helpful and friendly. Highly recommended!

Went here tonight food very average, service very poor some food brought out then 10 minutes later others were served, then puddings arrived they had all finished when my cheese arrived stunning venue needs to be better.

Stopped at the Royal Lodge for lunch whilst canoeing down the Why River. The food was very nice and the service good. The surrounding area was lovely, overlooking the Symands Yat rapids. The only downside is that there were a lot of people there and a very busy car park in front of the lodge.

Lovely location near the river. Staff member at the bar wasn't particularly helpful regarding our booking. Food was good and at reasonable price.

Such a lovely scenic place. Plenty of outside seating for nice days, good choice of drinks at the bar and reasonable prices. Staff all very friendly and good service. It's also very dog friendly with plenty of water bowls.

Very friendly pub situated on the river side. Large pub garden with ample seating and umbrella covers. Dog friendly pub with several water bowls available. Great for a casual drink or a romantic dinner for two.

Great food and service, set in a stunning location. Can be a bit on the pricey side though.

Would avoid the place like the black death if they don't screw you on the booze they will get you on the car park charges.

We found that this enclave of tea shops, pub, hotel and camp site in this honey trap area was a well organised system for extracting money from tourists when 20 of us had no choice but to camp here on a canoeing trip down the Wye but this place takes the prize for tourist rip offs. Beer a minimum £3.70 a pint, Food was incredibly pretentiously described but poor in quality, poor in quantity and greatly overpriced. For example, £12.95 for fish and chips with a disgracefully small cod fillet but bulked out with chips. Cajun chicken with ciabatta was essentially a chicken burger, again bulked out with a bread bun and chips. My £11.95 pie chips, and peas had a small pool of lumpy green slime lurking near the pie and masquerading as mushy peas. Why do these places skimp on the meal ingredients just to make even more profit when the ingredients are the cheapest item of the total cost. 20 of us were so disappointed that we left no tip which was a shame for the serving staff who were friendly and efficient. They don't care about gaining a reputation for poor expensive food as there will be another wave of gullible tourists to follow the next week. I've seen it all before in such areas. Oh — and be suspicious of glowing praise from people who have written but one review. Or remain anonymous.

Fab couple of days in lovely hotel. Staff very helpful and pleasant. Breakfast yummy! Gardens are beautiful. My husband and I will return very soon.

Good tasty food, pretty surroundings though the pub itself lacked atmosphere, possibly due to it being a hotel. Not cheap (main meal 10-12 pounds) but it is in a popular tourist spot.
