Great historic hotel, great gift shops and loved having Starbucks right down stairs waking to the first snow of the year!

This place is a gem. Im so pleased. Highly recommend!

We were in town visiting and someone suggested the martini bar here. Upon arrival we found out there was a $10 admission fee so we went to the Irish bar adjoining the hotel. We ended up having a ton of fun. Very mixed crowd, but in a really great way. Amazing prices. Our night there a couple was celebrating their wedding and the music was a game changer.

We stayed in one of the "duplex" rooms. The layout was very awkward; the bathroom joins the two rooms so when it's in use the rooms are cut off from each other. Room refrigerator and safe weren't working. Elevators are old and slow, and the doors closed very quickly so watch your young children. Hotel has a lot of character, but I recommend something more modern for families. Having a Starbucks downstairs was nice though, since there is no breakfast offered.

A very beautiful hotel! Our room was one of the weirdest setups I've in a hotel. We booked a double queen room but we actually got 2 rooms, each with a full size mattress, a TV, a desk, and a dresser. The only thing the two rooms shared was a bathroom which also doubled as the connection to the other room. It's pretty hard explain… When the AC frosted over in one of the rooms the hotel was very quick to fix it, and upkeep was extremely important at this property. They made sure everything was in tiptop shape. The beds were also super comfy! We overall enjoyed our stay at this wonderful hotel and would recommend this property to anyone staying in Rapid City!

Updated: They reversed the charge after a few days, so everything is all good now! Beautiful hotel, antique almost. This is an amazing hotel! We have stayed here several times and each room is unique and very clean. The staff is helpful and friendly as well. Take time to look at each floor and read about the hotel. And the Chubby Chipmunk is an absolute must! They are located in the main lobby and it is amazing!

We decided to treat ourselves to a stay at the Alex Johnson — I’ve wanted to stay here for many years but budget just didn’t allow for it. This year we finally made it and it was superb. Meticulous rooms, incredibly comfortable beds with perfect bedding — a marvelous interior and rich history. The staff is wonderful and one of my favorite parts of the stay is the rooftop. Partly indoors, partly outdoors on two levels ten stories above Rapid City… you can relax outside at the fire pits surrounded by amazing views and encased firenadoes while drinking the beverage of your choice. Great music, spectacular views… I never wanted to leave!

History, activities and small town charm. What more could you ask for? I had the weekend getaway bug and the Alex Johnson pulled me in! Where else can you stay in the same hotel where four US Presidents have stayed (we were blessed to stay in the presidential suite. You can literally feel the history in this room). The location serves as “base camp” for all that South Dakota has to offer. It really is a must visit.

I've never visited a hotel that I've loved more. The staff was SO friendly, the rooms were reasonably priced and the hotel was so classy, had great on site restaurants and felt super safe! We'll be back again! Loved the older concierge that was working Saturday night!

The room had very little space between the bed and dress. The room was very dusty and needed to be cleaned. The bathroom was nice. The staff was nice and helpful except the front desk lady was very rude! PARKING sucks!

The building itself is probably the nicest in Rapid City. It has an updated old school Charm about it. The parking can be a bit difficult, but there is valet parking if you want to pay for it. While you stay there, the rooftop bar is a must, with spectacular views of the mountains and the city. The rooms are nicely upgraded while keeping with the rustic old school feel and history of the building.

We had a great experience here while traveling west with our two large dogs! The staff was very kind and accommodating for our last minute reservation. The food from the pub was pretty dang good, too! Price was very reasonable for the amount of luxury this place has to offer. We will absolutely make this our Rapid City stopping point!

It was an okay stay. The phone didn't work, which normally isn't a problem but still annoying. Our coffee (4 k-cups, 2 decaf 2 medium roast) was never refilled during clean up the next morning, that was pretty (f******) inconvenient. Late checkout is hourly like a hooker motel so there's that. The hotel also doesn't offer breakfast, which means the nice view of the sky bar isn't available until 4pm, which was doubly disappointing. Side note: Breakfast across the street at tally's was amazing! View from the room was great, and the seductive elevator voice was a nice touch. The shower was perfect! The temperature dial is on the opposite side of the shower head, pretty handy. Rapid City overall was awesome, and this hotel's location is great, right in the middle of downtown. If location (walking distance) is important to you, this place is great, but overall I'd say it's a pretty average hotel stay, and for a reduced price I'd be fine with many other hotel chains and just drive into the center.

I had a meeting in the Rushmore room. I asked for directions at the front desk and she was very friendly and helpful. I walked there, so I didn't need to use the valet service they offer. It has a convenient downtown location.

The Wedding of Our Dreams This hotel is spectacular, but what takes it from a 5 star review to a 10 star review is the STAFF. We stayed at the Alex Johnson in October for several days and celebrated our reception in the fabulous ballroom. I cannot express how much I appreciate everything our Wedding Coordinator did for us. Allison, you were AMAZING! The entire catering team was perfect, timely, friendly and overly accommodating. This hotel has always been a home away from home for me and now I have even more memories of one of the most important days of our lives. We can't wait to return for another stay or dinner at my two favorite restaurants.

They just did a massive update which makes it super nice. Nice rooms, the few times I've stayed at the Alex Johnson were good. Curtious staff, great location, but the whole hotel still has that historic feel. The only thing I didn't like was the elevators, I'm a bigger guy and you get a few people in them and they feel tight. Other than that I'd recommend to stay there anytime.

Overall best experience I've ever had in lodging. The Vertex rooftop 'restaurant' is really a bold architectural mini-masterpiece. The outdoor patio with sweeping views is lit and warmed by many moderne gas torches and fireplaces. The bartender the night I was there, I forgot his name, sorry, but he made my experience on a slow night something special. He's a magician! who loves his black hills, and has way too many stories for a guy his age (kidding). Staying at the Alex Johnson puts you at ground zero of a burgeoning music and arts scene; do not miss "Art Alley". If you are tired of ubiquitous country music, try the Oasis bar, just a few steps away. The hotel is named for a railroad baron, and has been completely renovated in grand period style, where practical. I noted many thoughtful little touches in my room that they don't brag on. The hotel does not own parking, but is surrounded by city parking which is free on the weekend, and $10 per day otherwise. Parking is vigorously patrolled by an exceptionally well staffed police department.

The room itself was amazing! The view was great given the fact it is rapid city. Room service was quick and accommodating to my lactose intolerance. We went up to the vertex bar for dinner and drinks, which was also great. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. She made sure our table was saved for us when we went up to the patio. The staff there was all very kind to us and made sure we had whatever we needed.

We love everything about this hotel, except that they charge $50 per night for a pet fee. I can understand maybe having a one time charge of $50 per stay, but for every night? Do I get free doggy daycare with this? No. But I should for that amount. Other than that, this place is awesome if you're not toting along a fur baby with you.

I went to the Alex Johnson to take a date to the Vertex skybar. A couple of boys working the valet helped me out and made sure the experience was a memorable one. Thank you so much to them! The first one was named Andrew and he made sure everything went smoothly, the second was also named Andrew ironically and he gave me a nice history lesson about the hotel. I am glad the hotel hires such knowledgeable and helpful staff!

This place is awesome. Rooftop bar provides great view of downtown Rapid City with blue glass fire pits roaring at night. Rooms are very nice, service is top notch and hotel has historic look & feel — it's the Alex J.

From the start the valet was unorganized. They did not know the proper protocol for their job. They didn't just get the bags from the car and bring them into the hotel. They put them on the cart and we did the rest. Check in was ok but the key didn't work. The rooms were clean and comfortable. They were small. Tight for 2 people. The staff was nice. We didn't eat at the Vertex but the views of Rapid City from the 10th floor was spectacular!

Our family loved our experience at the Alexander Johnson Hotel! The hotel itself was in a prime location in Downtown Rapid City which was a huge bonus because there is so much to do, shop, and see in the area. In addition, the hotel boasted unique, historic, charm that made it a beauty from inside and out. Our room was large and comfortable with outstanding views, a nice layout, and a modern feel. The service was excellent throughout the hotel. There are also little shops connected to the hotel including Starbucks which made doing work convenient. I would recommend the Alexander Johnson Hotel to anyone looking for a fun, relaxed, and enjoyable stay in Rapid City.

We stayed for two nights at The Hotel Alex Johnson. Beautiful, clean an comfortable room. Friendly staff and a great down town location. Great rooftop bar. One caveat, the bathroom door would not open had my husband not been in the room, I would have been trapped in there without a means to phone for help; much screaming and banging would have occurred. Upon inspection, it appeared the door had been recently painted and it froze tight at the top where the paint stuck to the door jamb. Also, the shower door was off-level allowing water to seep over the floor. Nit-picking: good thick towels but a few had very freyed edges. Despite the few issues, I recommend staying for with the Hotel Alex Johnson.

Hotel was nice. We ended up staying here because it was the last room that was pet friendly. Everyone was very nice to our dog. The room itself was clean but a bit cramped. Difficult for three people and a 100lb dog to move around in the space. The bathroom was also not the cleanest. Beds, however, were very clean. It was disappointing there was no continental breakfast, the hotel only offered some very small discounts and coupons for local business.

It's a nice place to stay… Bed was comfortable! We were put in A VERY small top on first and it was not what we seen online… Not what we paid for. The shower was a 1 person Very tiny. They switched us rooms and that one was still small but WAY better! We could actually move in the room! The shower was full sized… More of what we paid for! There is plenty of things to do all around the building! They only lost a star due to size of rooms… Also understanding it is an older building! Also be prepared to park your vehicle blocks away!

Hotel is great! The decor and comfort of the room is just amazing. Beds are so comfortable that is hard to get out of the room. Bar/restaurant on ground floor is great, but the crowd is too young on the weekends. The roof top is always busy, so is hard to get service, not to mention lots of smoking makes it hard to stick around to enjoy food and drinks. On the other hand, the views from both roof tops are a must see. Some of the fees mentioned in the reviews are minimal (3 bucks or so, ) and they are based on the fact that the hotel is the oldest building in the city. Yes the hotel is hunted, nice story behind it. I would go back to Rapid City to stay in that hotel all over again. Make sure you know the calendar events so you can plan on valet or parking. City closes a lot of the streets for those events making it a challenge to get the car from valet or dropping it off…

Historic hotel with newly renovated rooms. They are smaller than usual, but that's how it was many years ago. Rooftop restuarant and bar has amazing city views. Very cozy and relaxing getaway. Starbucks and Irish bar on ground floor. Friendly staff.

My new husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon. We stayed in the bridal suite which is a beautiful spacious room with a four post bed and a large jacuzzi tub. It was a beautiful place to stay and staff was very friendly. I would have given them a 5 star rating because we did enjoy our stay, it felt very luxurious and was a great place to spend our time in rapid city. However, upon arrival we called to find out where to park and we were told to stop in and they would give us a pass to park in the garage a block away. After checking in my husband asked for the pass and they said we had valet and that the gentleman up front would take our car. She gave him a card to give to the valet when we needed the car again. No price was mentioned or that it was an additional fee, and since we were paying almost $300 a night for our room it wasn't crazy to think it was included in our 5 night stay in the bridal suite. After checking out we looked at our receipt that had been emailed to us and saw a $15 charge each day for 5 days for valet. We were upset because this was never mentioned to us and when we called they gave us the round about and finally agreed to refund half the charges.

We called ahead of time and there was no mention of the oddity of the available room. The room provided was two rooms seperated by the bathroom with a different bed in each room. There was no bathtub, and no screens on the windows on the 9th floor. It was a pet friendly hotel, which was great, but did not provide a pet area. There was a 25 dollar non-refundable fee per pet. The house keeping was friendly but very loud very early. This was not a bad experiance but had many very good and many very odd details. Overall 3/5 was fair.

Listen! Whatever you do, don't get a room next to the elevator! When you check in, ask to get a room away from the elevator and then ask to see the room first. If you don't, all through the night… Ding ding ding ding! Rooms are small and bathroom is nice but has no counterspace. Bed is comfortable, pillows sucked. The ac is old and kicks on and off all night and is pretty loud, no stat. The rooftop lounge is nice. If you're a light sleeper, probably should avoid this place.

My experience overall is fantastic. The staff are helpful with suggestions activities and places to visit/eat. The Hotel has an excellent restaurant and social lounge/bar. My only complaint is that I booked a room with a queen size bed but received a full size bed. Being that I was traveling alone it didn't hamper my sleep.

I wish I could give it 0 stars. Do not stay here. Way overpriced for what you get. Our room had no tub, only a tiny shower. They were doing construction over our room until 9pm, even after mentioning it to the front desk 3 times, who said there was no construction. Finally they went upstairs to talk to them. The elevator ding was so loud we could hear it in our room. The surrounding area was full of bums, making you nervous to park your car, btw they make you park on the street, which is always busy. Basically avoid this place altogether.

The old rooms don't keep out the noise from the night life. The walls are so thin you can hear conversations next door. And the rooms are very small so unless it is just one or 2 people tops, it can get very tight. The remodeled rooms are nice and seem to be quieter.

Beautiful and clean. They have a lovely roof top lounge with views for miles. The front desk lady was delightful. The only issue was finding parking as the garage and lots were over a block away. We ended up parking on the street.

This hotel is the best lodging experience Rapid City has to offer. We stayed on the floor just below the Vertex bar, which was an incredible bar. It offers 360 degree views of the city and well made cocktails. The room was small, but made up for its size with warm character and charm. Our view was exceptional, looking over art alley and main street square. The beds were also comfortable and clean. If you don't enjoy the high end style of the bar upstairs, then you have the option of Paddy's, which is connected to the hotel lobby (opposite the side of Starbucks). Overall great experience in a hotel with rich history.

Kind of scary hotel but I loved the experience and the tour was great around the hotel, highly recommend if you want to experience something new and fun! I would go back.

I had some contractors in town that where staying at the Fairfield which gives free passes to the Vertex. While hanging out at Independant Ale House they asked me about it and I said lets go check it out. They had left their passes in their rooms but I figuring that all we'd have to do is show them proof they where staying there but the gal at the front desk was absolutely insulting. Stated that keys don't mean a person is staying at a hotel even though they could have shown her their reservations or she could have called the hotel to verify. The night ended well with Paddy Oneil's bar manager getting us up to the Vertex and checking on us multiple times. Additionally, I spoke with the Hotel manager and she was very easy to talk with and reassured me this is not acceptable. Upgraded review based on experience with the management.

Hotel was very nice. Rooms were clean and staff was friendly. I would highly recommend. Location is great too! Plenty of stuff to see and do within walking distance.

Absolutely love this hotel! They have one of the best Starbucks in rapid city and Paddys is my favorite bar in rapid.

My girlfriend and I stayed here for one night on our way to Yellowstone. Hotel was nice but it is right down town so there is NO parking lot. You have to park on the street or a block a way on the TOP floor of a parking structure. As stated in some of the other reviews the bathroom was VERY small. The room its self was nice and clean but there was, what im assuming was a closet door, that we could NOT open. The door was not locked but simply would not open. Oh and good luck using the elevator on a busy weekend. You will wait 10 minutes just to get on it. Overal if you're tired and looking for a place to quickly get in and out of without a lot of hastle DONT STAY HERE. If you've got a lot of time and you're looking for an interesting experience and an expencive room then this is your place.

Nice unique old fashioned but remodeled hotel. The view from the vertex bar on the 10th floor is amazing. Bed was soft with lots of pillows! room was very comfy, but think this was the tiniest bathroom I've ever been in — bout 30inx50in-knees under sink to sit on stool and I'm only 5'3". Friendly staff and Loved the Chubby Chipmunk hand dipped chocolates — yum yum!

Such a rude Barista Team in The Starbucks. Their attitude and snark ruined my whole morning. The hotel is nice. Have stayed before with no issues, but the staff is a pretty big part of a business like this. Maybe have them re-evaluate the way they interact with customers. I expect so much more from Starbucks. I was a Barista and had I ever said or acted the way this crew did, I would have lost my job.

Tha Alex Johnson is a great historic place to stay in Rapid City. It's right downtown so access to local shops a restaurants is easy walking. They've done a lot of remodeling, so the rooms are nice, but still old. If that's a problem for you there are other hotels that aren't quite as centrally located. Tally's across the street serves a great breakfast! There's a Starbucks attached to the lobby of AJ's (Alex Johnson) too. Paddy O'Neil's is a nice bar that is also just off the lobby at AJ's. If you are looking for a quiet bar with a great view, Vertex is on the 10th floor. Vertex is a membership only bar, but if you stay at AJ's, you have free access! AND there is outdoor seating with fire pits to keep you warm when it gets chilly. Great bar! All said, I love AJ's. I hope you like it too!

When we first arrived, the key didn't work in the room. Went back downstairs and the guy changed the key to work with the room listed on the key envelope. Key worked, but someones luggage and clothes were in the room. Went back down and we were upgraded to the Bridal Suite. The room was AMAZING. The bathroom… not so much. You would think that a hotel that charges over $200 a night would have more than one bar of soap, one bottle of conditioner, and one bottle of shampoo. The bathroom was more in the low budget price range.

Stayed in a two room suite and was great for a family of 4.

It took a half hour to check it. When we finally got to our room, the air conditioner was broken, the refrigerator was broken and a window was broken. It wasn't fixed because apparently 3 other rooms had problems. We were moved to another room with part of the ceiling falling down from a leak in the roof. They accidently checked us out 2 nights before we were suppose to leave. They did not offer to put us in a different room or try to secure a room in another hotel. We left and went somewhere else. Do not go there unless you want your vacation ruined.

Our room was not clean. There was dust on everything and the shower looked like it hadn't been cleaned in awhile. There was some red stain on our sheets as well. The pub had great food and service was wonderful.

This hotel was comfortable, clean, and the staff were courteous. It was better than run-of-the-mill hotels, but nothing to particularly write home about. The rooftop bar is a high-point though.

“Spend the night, not a week. It’ll be long enough. ” Okay, so this is an old hotel, I get it. I didn’t expect spacious rooms and second millennia bathrooms (and didn't get them). Rapid City is rather noisy, even at 1:00AM on a Tuesday morning, and the way the hotel is designed and constructed doesn't block much noise. The lobby is cool, probably the best part of the whole experience. But the kid at the front desk that checked me in talked incessantly about his problems, the housekeeping staff, about everything but what I needed to know. And we were constantly interrupted when the phone would ring. Yes, parking is included. On the 3rd floor of a garage 1 1/2 blocks away, no elevator, no cover over the car, no security. I expected class in a place like this, to be cared-for by staff who know how to operate a classy old hotel. This is *not* the old-hotel experience in DC or NYC or Chicago. Not even close. I was disappointed. The staff need a lot of training. The final straw was the $8.95/day "Historic Area Fee" — yes, it was on the sheet of paper I signed when I checked in — but I didn't read it word for word. While the hotel rate is comparable to many in the area; most don't have this additional fee. I would have paid it happily, once; to have it tacked on every night for 5 nights was excessive. It's a rather tiny downtown area, and historic or not, in the end, I left feeling like I had "been had". Next time I'll grab a big-box hotel near the highway.

Careful with the water! nice place. But rooms are a little small, so that removes a star and then the water is an issue so that removes a star. Be cautious as the water temperature fluctuates between scalding and freezing in certain rooms. I have stayed in several and some are fine while others: watch out! There have been times when you almost can't get out of the way in time before almost getting scalded. People with children beware.

Very nice hotel right on the downtown strip, and an amazing value. Make sure you mention the internet price and it's a great deal. Clean and very comfortable rooms with great amenities (attached Seattle's Best Coffee that offers breakfast room service, an Irish pub, and rooftop bar. If you stay Saturday night parking is a non-issue as parking is free everywhere Sunday (all level of parking garage and street parking along the strip). Definitely recommend if you want a nice place to stay while visiting Rushmore/Black Hills.

We were told The AJ was a great Hotel! The parking was inconvenient (motorcycle). We booked three nights stay. Beautiful place, clean. A few things lacking, fridge, microwave, no big deal. After riding in the heat all day, we just wanted to relax in our room and plan to explore the city the next day. Soon we heard a DOG whining in the room beside us! (it might have well been in our room) I called the desk. They said sorry, dogs were allowed on the FIRST floor, but these people asked for that room! But as a paying patron, don`t I have any perks also? The animal whined for hours! Called the desk again, they said they would move us. Why should I have to move? The Desk offered to move us and comp the room! No, the people with the dog should`ve been told to move. I asked if we were making noise, would the guest next to us be told to move? My wife and I were so angry, at being treated so poorly, we cancelled our stay, and left the next morning. The Hotel did not charge for the room, but ruined an otherwise great stay for us, in Rapid City! I guess our money wasn`t good enough for them. Tom Anguish, back to BEST WESTERN.
