Nice boutique hotel with a lot of charm. Rooms are a little smaller than normal but I didn’t mind. Water pressure is a big deal to me as I have long hair and need to get that conditioner out. This shower will fluctuate between light to normal constantly. Maybe it’s just this room. Overall great experience and great walking area to all the cool spots.

Great location great service.

This hotel has a great location and yet is tucked inside a residential neighborhood making it seem quiet! We loved the restaurant — — Booth One/Pump Room — — but sadly we were there on the last night and its actually part of a different company. I loved toiletries — — shampoo, conditioner, soap, and lotion. The front desk was friendly and accommodated an early check in. I'm sad that nothing else makes the "love" category. The room was incredibly disappointing. The air conditioner never fully cooled the room, the beds are low to the ground, and the chair had several stains on it… but the most disgusting is that paint is peeling from the ceiling and I actually woke up to flakes in my bed. Those issues don't just develop overnight and are a clear sign of a lack of upkeep. I mentioned this at check-out and they claimed they were going to take that room out of service and offered an upgrade to a suite during my next stay, but I'd rather pass on coming back.

Had a $500 gift card. Tried to tell us the next morning we would not get a gift card back because it was a one time use. Then when I got angry they offered to mail me a new gift card. We expected the rooms to be outdated, and they were but it is no reason for them to be disqusting. Had to be moved because we had a couch that looked like someone bled out on it and the there was a drawer that looked to hold a nice collection of human hair. Bathroom floor was sticky. Room 807 l…ooks like something straight from a Saw movie. Brought back left over pizza from brunch before we checked in and there is no refrigerator so we had to put it in the hallway, it is literally still there as I write this. When a bill was slipped past my Pizza and under my door they tried to charge us for both Evian waters that are not security tagged and just some random MB (Mini bar) item. I asked them at the desk if they do not have security tags on them how would you even know if they were taken if we are still in the room? No SPA?! There was little to be desired at Ambassador and my friend is embarrassed he choose this hotel as a place to get us a gift card.

The Hotel lobby, staff, lobby and restaurant was very nice. I found the rooms little to be desired and I was disappointed.

Very courteous allowed us to check in early because we were smiling happy staff.

My experience was amazing! Lovely staff, large suites overall beautiful place to stay.

The location is excellent-close to downtown, near a farmers market on the weekends. It was a mostly positive experience. The beds were incredibly comfortable. We visited while hotel staff were on strike, so I think the staff who were working were temps… it took 30 minutes to get a coffee on Saturday morning and room service came into our room 3 hours before check out to see if we were gone. I'm guessing those sorts of issues wouldnt happen with normal staffing.

My husband and I just stayed at the hotel for 3 nights. I have 3 issues with the hotel/room. (1) There was no recycle bin in the room. (2) There was no full length mirror in the room. (3) There was no fan in the bathroom. Petty details? Maybe, but a concern for me. Overall a beautiful hotel. A/C worked great, king sized bed was a treat, front desk was very courteous, room was very clean.

Beautiful hotel. Our stay was pleasant and our corner room was absolutely gorgeous. Staff was friendly and courteous. The original half freight elevator outside is a novelty but the only handicap accessible elevator to the 1st floor lobby where reception is located. It's a tight fit for an electric wheelchair and hard to navigate. If you have a large wheelchair it may not be doable. My handicap accessible room was spacious and the bathroom was huge. The neighborhood is beautiful and there are plenty of restaurants a few blocks away. My only complaint was the bed. It was way too firm and uncomfortable for me with my spine issues. I stayed when it was still The Public Hotel, right before it changed to the Ambassador, so I'm not sure if bedding changes have been made.

Meh… I expected more for the price. Location is fantastic (Gold Coast). However, the room was EXTREMELY small, needed updating and overall just left me wanting… more. The $69 per day parking charge was a surprise (and not in a good way). Would not recommend this hotel. You’d do better to stay at The Thompson right down the street.

Stayed here for a long weekend with my husband — great experience overall. Didn't explore the hotel that much, but our room was clean, quaint, and the staff we encountered were very helpful and friendly. The location made this place most ideal for us as it's really great for those who want to take a short walk to the lakefront beach. It's close to a variety of restaurants & a cute park that offers gelato with bistro tables to take in the scenery at Mariano Park (great vibes). Not far from the Magnificent Mile which eventually meets up with the River Tour Boats too. We'd stay here again in a heartbeat!

So so happy with our stay! We came in a few hours before check-in just to see if we could drop our luggage off early, they ended up putting us in our room early which was so much easier than leaving our things sitting there. Once we reached our room, I was absolutely stunned at how beautiful the room was. Very upscale and absolutely gorgeous. After a day of sight-seeing, we came back and ordered the best coconut chocolate cake from room service and fell asleep in the huge comfy bed. I have been so happy from start to finish. We will definitely be coming back!

My Fiance and I were married at the Ambassador Hotel on their roof top Astor terrace. Not only was the hotel and terrace beautiful but the staff at this hotel was incredible to work with! From the valet team, front desk, room service, event staff and management we felt right at home and treated with kindness and care.

Beautiful hotel in a fantastic location. Elegant, understated service. Impeccably clean and very reasonable for the level of service. I've always stayed at The Drake, but will make this my new go to.

This hotel has always had stellar service. The rooms are very stark and clean (all white) which is jarring in the daylight, but at night the lighting is splendid and everything is rich and warmly glowing. The Michael Jordan suite is my fave suite. It has a terrace. I also LOVE the fig candles from the minibar.

We stayed at this wonderful old Chicago hotel this April on a holiday from the UK. We were upgraded to a spacious king room (photos) with a view of downtown (see photo from window) a very comfortable bed and a homely feel. The Hotel is only a 10 minute walk from the magnificent mile, located in the upmarket and charming Gold Coast neighbourhood. Staff were very friendly and the food was good. The bar/restaurant is tasteful with striking decor (photo of lights) & pictures of significant people who have graced the hotel in days gone by. All in all a lovely experience.

Poor location, no restaurants nearby. The hotel restaurant is not very varied.

Tries very hard to be a posh hotel, and it'll show. Check-in staff were friendly, room was clean and spacious. Full size desk and couch. Comfortable bed. Bathroom was a little small with limited counter space. The restaurant is expensive with tiny portions. Luckily I had a $50 voucher. Got the tuna steak and it was really good, but had to get more food later. In room bar and snacks super expensive. Valet driver tried to sell me his own private space for my three nights. That was shady. The valet parking was pretty quick, less friendly, and $70/night plus tips.

I can't say enough good things about this historical hotel! The staff was all so friendly. Anything we needed we just had to ask and it was delivered within 5 minutes. Swanky old fashioned bar where they take the time to really make a drink. Loved the old architecture. My only complaint would be the room service adds 18% gratuity — which is fine, BUT when they deliver and ask for a signature, there is a place for a tip. I wasn't paying attention the first delivery of my morning coffee, so I ended up tipping on top of the tip.

Great location… but cheaply refurbished rooms. Rooms were old and smelled of smoke. If you can get a really cheap price it's worth it due to location. The lobby is nice and modern. But that's it. Parking is 65 a day. There is a parking lot one block away for 14 a day. The rooms were clean but out chair had stains on it. Linenes were decent. I would not stay here again.

Pretty hotel, but customer service was poor. The hotel uses double beds in a 4 person room. With girls sharing the room, this is not enough space. Most hotels provide queen beds option. Instead of trying to accommodate they asked us to pay additional $100/night to upgrade to a room that would have one king bed.

This is a very beautiful hotel in a very cool Chicago neighborhood. I also enjoyed the history of the hotel. They have everything from single bed rooms to 2 room suites. Great views and the lobby off the bar has an incredible fireplace.

The greeter at the door was not great but not bad. Didn't approach the car to greet us. I used to work as valet/greeter. They were not nearly as good as the Ritz. They are the first impression for a new guest and didn't do a great job. The hotel was nice. Good service. Great location. Small workout room but that's expected. Glad they have one.

Nice hotel. Nice room, however thin walls. Could here the gossip next door until 3am. We werent the only ones telling them to keep it down. The shower curtain sticks to you ha. And no fan in the bathroom so things get hot & steamy and not in a good way. Friendly front desk staff. We'd consider staying here again. Nice location & walking distance to a lot of attractions and good restaurants.

Nice valet service. Professional and courtesy check-in staff as well. Rooms are nicely designed! The lighting is pretty cool, as it goes along the edges of the cabinetry and drawers. Bed's are low to the ground and have this cool contemporary feel. My favorite part? Thick walls, and a long black glass desk! Most DEFINITELY staying here again without a doubt. If you don't mind walking a block or so there is a cheap garage off of Dearborn. 10/10 for value, will be back.

This place was beautiful and amazing. The only problem I had was that they charge a security deposit based on how many days your staying. So if its five days that an extra $500. Just prepare for that guys.

It is well fenced by a Walgreens and CVS that are open 24/7 in case you occupy what you want, the rooms are well-comfortable and the view is amazing.

Wife booked a two nights here on a surprised birthday trip for me. Was pleasantly surprised. It was quite clean and comfortable. One of the main elevators was out of service, but they had signs leading you to additional elevators (I believe they are typically for service only), which helped keep things moving. Staff was friendly and helpful. Neighborhood is quiet and easy to find pretty much anything you'd need. Only found one thing I didn't like, the bathroom didn't have a vent so steam built up quite a bit when shower. Will definitely consider returning in the future.

Inexpensive hotel. Price reflects the quality of amenities. Mini fridge is fully stocked with snacks, alcohol and assorted beverages. Clean room with scant city view. Looking for a cheap place to crash for the evening a great spot, taking out a date from out of town spend a few extra dollars and get something on the river or with lake views.

Fab hotel, excellent customer service. Emailed before we arrived to request a tea/ coffee machine and fridge, they were placed in the room before arrival. Beds are very comfortable, rooms clean and spacious, well stocked mini bar and staff (especially Ryan and Trisha) are super friendly and helpful. Location is perfect, walking distance from lots of shops, restaurants and bars. We are still here for another three days before we go back to England so we may go to the bar and restaurant (Which are very popular and look cosy) and add to this review later.

Loved this hotel. In a great location that is a short walk to many dining options. Second City and the Lincoln Park Zoo are a quick walk to the north of the hotel, and downtown Chicago is an easy walk to the south. If you aren't up for walking a few miles a day, the subway station is only a few blocks away by the Jewel-Osco grocery store.

Vintage, gorgeous, smaller type hotel for Chicago. Great service. Attentive employees. From breakfast to dinner and cocktails. Affordable and delicious.

Attended a professional event there. The valet was great but upon getting inside the sign for where I needed to go was small and I passed by it the first time not realizing it was there. The desk staff were the only staff in sight and they were busy helping others. One of the elevators was down (which is fine, there was a sign they were renovating/updating) but the alternate elevators were really not very nice and let you off in what seemed like a broom closet… I'd rather have just waited for the one good elevator to get out on my floor in an actual hallway.

Parking nearby to save on valet, lobby and restaurant look great and gives a nice warm welcome. Rooms are that of a typical downtown city vibe. Small, low and full of expensive purchases inside. Bathroom was a bit meh with its old school toilet taken from a 7-11 and tub not expected for a hotel rated as highly. Great service and would stay again, maybe go for the deluxe room next time instead.

From the perspective of a first-time Chicago visitor, this place was pretty great. It's clean, well-maintained, and reasonably affordable. It's a couple blocks from the L which will take you downtown. It's a slight jog over to the lake, which has access under the highway to a running trail. It is also a moderate walk (just being honest) or short Uber to some really popular restaurants and shopping. The concierge was great, there's a bar on the first floor that serves GOOD coffee in the morning (no, not complimentary). A good time was had by all.

This was a great location for a weekend trip to Chicago. Nice area for walking. Friendly staff. The pump room bar was a nice landing spot after a long drive. Lots of people hanging around and chatting. The room was great and quiet. Valet parking deals with your car.

I was in town for the Chicago marathon. The Ambassador is positioned in an attractive area North of downtown with access to numerous transit options. The lobby had an interesting decor: modern amenities juxtaposed with classic architecture.

Disappointed. Reviews were good and stars showed it was a nice hotel. The restaurant is closed, which was one of the reasons we picked going here… not one mention of “sorry our restaurant is closed. Here are some other places around here”. The room was decent sized. The bathroom was smaller and the shower small. Someone who is taller or even a bit larger would be uncomfortable. Found that the shower curtain (cloth curtain) was sticking to me as I washed (gross)! Also, our bathroom had a sewer smell. If we kept the door closed it was manageable. Pillows were small and asked for one extra which never shows up. Only two body towels, which would be fine if normal sized. The towels were small. The hotel is charming as it’s an older building and the area of town is nice. I would not call it a luxury hotel. Loved the bell hops — they were very nice and even chatted with us as we waited for a ride. Overall, it wasn’t an awful stay… just wouldn’t go back.

Lovely hotel, just a block off Lake Shore Drive, and 4 blocks North of the Miracle Mile or Rush Street entertainment, a very convenient location. Room are well layed out with large window, large closet, decent bathroom. Comfotable and clean. Modern design. Easy check in and great value. Even invited to a wine event on Tuesday night. Very nice, would stay again.

The hotel is really nice, I felt like a movie star when I walked in my hotel room!? it was very spacious and clean and everything was white… reasonable price as well.

What a great place! The area of the location (Gold Coast) is so nice, clean, and safe! Given our first visit to Chicago, we were impressed. You can walk to all the popular places in 20-30 min. The room in the hotel was small but enjoyable. The inside is glamorous and very welcoming. Overnight parking is around $60 a night so beware!

The hotel is good, it could be better, you can see some details due to use in part of the furniture. They can upgrade the bathrooms. In general the room looked nice, it's located in a nice area and it's a good value for the price of the night.

If you're looking for a 5 star feel hotel but don't want to pay an arm and a leg, this is the obvious choice. It was about 1 mile from the magnificent mile but cost almost half of what a hotel there did. Everything you want is a cheap Uber ride away. Awesome breakfast spot right around the corner and plenty of low key bars within walking distance yet still in a safe area.

We stayed at this hotel for our weekend visit to Chicago. The rate was the best within the city thanks to a Groupon. It is close to restaurants and bars as well as the red line if you need to go somewhere! Recommend no car for traveling in Chicago! The room was nice, spacious bathroom, comfortable bed. Unfortunately there is no free breakfast, pool, or hot tub but those things do not seem to be typical in the market.

The lobby, library and bar are lovely. Valet parking is super expensive @ about $60 with in and out privileges. Rooms are old and need some touch ups. Bed sheets and/or mattress pad were a bit bumpy. Thank goodness for long pj pants. My curtains had mold and bathroom could use some attention. I do like the minimalist feel, but quality shouldn't be.

The place is nice, pity that to have a drink it is necessary to look for the servers…

First of all I would like to say that the public is a beautiful hotel and it's in such a peaceful part of town. If you love nice rooms and quiet then this hotel is for you! Its about a 15 minute walk to shopping. Would stay there again!

The room looks nice at a glance, but was very dirty. The filter in the air conditioner looked like it hadn't been cleaned in over a year. It was like a bad laundry lint trap. The "mini bar" is far over priced even for Chicago. $6 for a standard tiny bag of m&ms… You have to be kidding. They leave no room in the fridge for you to add your own things and there's no microwave. The biggest plus is the staff. They were very friendly and did everything they could to help with questions.

The lounge and lobby are great. The rooms are less than par. I suggest a complete remodel done with attention to detail and better beds! The bathtubs are deep tubs, which I love!

The location of this hotel is prime. Walking distance from the lake and from the best shopping in the city. Also a stones throw from multiple metro lines. The rooms are trendy and sparse, and the mini bar is about what you would expect. My TV was broken, but I didn't need it anyway. The bathroom could be a bit nicer, but it was still great all things considered. The Pump Room was incredible. It essentially becomes an ultra classy club/bar on weekend nights. Will probably stay here again.

Nice, chic hotel in a great location — right at the top of Michigan ave. Also the gold coast area has a nice collection of bars and restaurants. The hotel itself is everything you need — its clean with decent size rooms. It also has a bar and a restaurant in the lobby which are happening on the weekend.

Overall very good. Rooms were nice and location was also nice. The atmosphere at the lobby was kind of weird and clubby. And the waitresses were wearing very little clothing almost all day so when I ordered some tea at 4 in the afternoon it was a bit weird.

Just another Ikea hotel, nothing special. Meh. It's old, and it's been made-over one too many times… Don't look too close, and it's OK. Nice location.

Hanna at the front was great. She made sure we we're well taken care off. The Hotel was very upscale and clean. We really enjoyed our stay and will stay again. I couldn't believe how close we we're to the Lake. Very romantic at night. We just love the hotel.

The Public is a nice, modern feeling hotel with room for improvement. Clearly you could see bones of the former Ambassador East which was what this property used to be known as. The Public did keep the name of their well-known restaurant, Pump Room. There is no vent in the bathroom so expect it to take a while for the steam to clear off the mirror after you take a shower. When we checked in they offered to upgrade us to the larger, Deluxe King room for an additional $70 per night. The Deluxe has more sitting space. We did not take them up on the offer. Wi-fi is barely functional. You get “free” basic Wi-Fi that has a rate of 1 mbps. You can pay $20 for the the premium Wi-Fi of 4 mbps. The premium is still quite slow and definitely overpriced. This is clearly a function that needs to be modernized. We went to the Library and Coffee Bar on a Saturday night. We are in our mid-50’s and felt a bit out of place so took our drinks back to our room. It was loud and crowded with young, stylish professionals. We found out the next day that there were two parties going on in the bar which is why it was so crowded and boisterous. All of the staff at the Public we encountered were very gracious. We called down to the front desk on Saturday evening because our neighbor’s TV was so loud we could hear it in our room. I think it was a combination of their TV being turned up as well as the walls being thin. Security did come up and asked them to turn their TV down (and they did.

Very sexy boutique hotel located in the gold Coast neighborhood, which my husband and I have come to love while visiting the city. (no screaming sirens, taxis, or bachelorette parties outside our hotel). Set among beautiful brownstone homes with immaculate gardens, great for a walk while staying. Very close to Lake Michigan, you can see it as you come and go from hotel. Nice amenities, such as a couple of old school cruiser bikes to use complimentary. (first come). The library and staff there is great for espresso in the morning. Great vibe with fireplace to chill and read paper or plan the day (hint no coffee makers in room, u can find that at the holiday inn). We ate at the Pump room for the first time, breakfast twice and dinner one evening. Really great! One of our better meals. The room is great. Depends what your up for. We enjoyed the awesome bed and great linens. We often bring our own, just in case. No need here! Loved the second area in the loft. Amazing down filled sofa! The color palette was a particular fave of mine, everything is white, ecru, and cream! just beautiful. Huge windows with gorgeous drapes. Bathrooms a tad small. (hard to compare to Rad Blue another fav. Of ours)! @# Downside. The staff seemed a bit disconnected, young bell hop out front told us incorrectly we could reserve bikes for the entire day by calling down in the morning, neither is true, must be ready to roll when you reserve them and 4 hrs is the max.

I have conflicting feelings on this hotel. Coming here and walking into the foyer, the hotel came off as very impressive, luxurious and trendy. The staff were very quick and attentive, including the valet. Now once you step onto the elevator, press your floor and the doors close, things start to slowly fall apart. The hotel definitely needs to update the elevators. They do not match the interior of the hotel (especially the floor. Ick) and really degrades the place ever so slightly. Get off and walk through a very dimly lit dark beige hallway with gold accents. Thinking about it, whoever designed these hallways was rather smart considering the fact that the dim lights and dark paint easily hides any imperfections from the old hotel. Finally, arrive at your room and open your door to one of the better aspects. The rooms are white and light beige, so walking out of the hallway brings such a refreshing change and gives a great aesthetic impact. The room on the other hand, is a whole different story when it comes to details. Lets start with the fact that there was not a coffee maker in the room. Going to many luxury hotels, I've come to expect this. Next, lets appreciate bathroom. There is white throughout, and let me tell ya, the grout does not look good at some spots, especially the floor. It made it very uncomfortable to step out of the shower onto and really made the room look even dirtier and dated.

Public Hotel falls under the category of the hip, trendy boutique hotels. It's located in Downtown Chicago (North River) within walking distance to plenty of restaurants and bars. Our room was beautiful with the modern contemporary décor. We got the double queen beds. The room had a fully stocked mini bar with snacks, water, wine, beer, and hard liquor. Good thing about the mini bar is it does not have motion sensor. So if you change your mind after picking it up, you don't have to worry about getting charge unlike Vegas hotels. Room came with the typical amenities and free Wi-Fi. Also, there's a gym on the 11th floor. Ice is on the 8th and 16th floor of the hotel. There's an upscale restaurant and a bar located inside the hotel near the lobby. Staff were all uber friendly.

You took a beautiful old building and turned it in to a disaster! The rooms are terrible, cheap design looks like they did it thru Ikea. No light switch when you walk in! Beds are almost to the ground. Had dinner in the Pump room. Food and service is fantastic. But the decorating again horrible! The dining room chairs are so low you need booster seats to reach the tables. You never take away from the style of the building.

The Public Chicago does not live up to the facade of being a high quality hotel. While the service is fine and the staff relatively nice, the amenities are not up to par. Additionally, the walls are paper thin. I was woken up prematurely 3 out of the 7 nights that I stayed here. The guests weren't being particularly loud, but I could here conversations and even the television playing. Not what you would expect from a place like this.
