We were delighted to get a special offer on short notice to stay at this hotel. It had excellent user reviews and the location right on the beach in the heart of the boardwalk looked terrific. There is nothing better than being able to walk right out the door onto the beach! As noted by other reviews, the hotel was exceptionally clean and tidy. We had a problem with our room upon check-in that was resolved within 20 minutes to our complete satisfaction. The front desk staff always were cheerful and helpful. We appreciated the free coffee at the front desk. At night, the hotel was very quiet — it seemed that mostly families with children were staying in the property and there was no one moving about after 9:30 pm. The only annoying aspect of our room was a safety device (not sure of its purpose) that cast a green glow across the room at night. We like our room to be as dark as possible so that was not the best for us. Otherwise, the room was great. Even though it was on the side of the hotel, it's balcony had a good beach view including of sunrise over the ocean. We ate several meals in the restaurant attached to the hotel that were ok but not great. But that has to be put in the context of usual dining options at the beach. We definitely would stay here again.

It was clean nice rooms. Ocean front rooms. And they had a fire next store. We could not get breakfast but they took care of us. Nice staff. Only complaint was weekends lots of drunks but then the parties quited down around 12:30 am.

The hotel staff was wonderful. Check-in and check out was easy and no wait. Room was clean. Close to the boardwalk. Little confusing at first for a person in a wheelchair to enter but was very accessible.

We stayed for a few days recently and had a great mini stay! The rooms were clean, fresh and relaxing. We enjoyed the oceanfront room for our balcony… GREAT LOCATION AND VIEWS! We enjoyed the indoor pool as well as the hot tub! Janice, at the front desk was friendly, courteous and pleasant. We chatted with her every time we enjoyed the complimentary tea and coffee in the lobby. Great place to stay with excellent service and staff… especially Janice! She should earn employee of the month!

Great hotel all the way around clean, friendly employees, indoor pool, great location right on boardwalk. I recommend that ocean front rooms.

We stayed for 3 nights in the off season and had a wonderful time. Staff was friendly and helpful. Cleaning staff was absolutely excellent. We were on the 7th floor, so water pressure was rather lacking. Some items in the room showed signs of significant wear, and poor maintenance in minor places.

My family and I stayed at this location and it was great. The service and hospitality was amazing! Thank you Turkesa, Juanita, Ashley and Ms. Anita? (night shift, sorry I am not that great with names). We plan to come back!

Clean… awesome views… beachy decor…. Comfy beds… all you could want and more in a moderately priced hotel!

Location is good: on the boardwalk. Friendly staff. Room was clean. Balcony is small and narrow and the screen was broken. Indoor pool is very small and not accessible 24-hrs. Building is old but superficially renovated. Small TV with no on-demand programs. Mattress was not comfortable. Water pressure was low. Only 1 ice machine on the ground floor. No vending machines but front desk sells some snacks. Hotel's bar and Brother's pizza has good view but food is horrible and overpriced.

We had an amazing front desk associate her name was Kat, she greeted us she was so very friendly and very welcoming. We enjoyed talking with her and if we needed anything she said don't hesitate to call. It was very clean and ocean view everything was just so wonderful.

Nice clean place didn't get around to checking out the restaurant but I hear the food was great we'll be coming back.

They sell out quickly in and out of season. Great beds…

I absolutely love everything about this hotel! The manager Ashley is AWESOME as were the other staff members. I would definitely recommend this hotel to friend's and family. I'll be back FOR SURE! Thank you for A WONDERFUL WEEKEND ❤

We had a great stay here. NICE LARGE rooms on the Boardwalk. Nice balconies, comfortable beds. Resturant on the property. Parking garage.

Great location. Great and friendly staff. Great prices, and attached restaurant is amazing.

Overall room is pretty nice and clean. We had an issue with water on the carpet by the balcony door. Maybe from a tropical storm that moved through the area. The hotel is looking into the problem. On the second morning at the hotel the clean up person did a quick job cleaning the room.

Loved the hotel and the staff was extremely friendly. Rooms need updated a little but they were very clean. Highly recommend this hotel.

Hotel is a clean nice hotel. Staff is ok, could be better. Make sure when you are reserving a room use SPECIFIC language on what you want. We asked for a ocean view room, thinking it was a room facing the ocean. Instead it was a room facing the street where you could see the ocean. We know now to ask for an OCEAN FRONT ROOM!

Room was very clean! They even found something I lost and held it for me! The staff was very friendly and the lobby always smelled of a fresh coffee house! Overall great experience with this hotel!

Small room. No bathtub. Dirty. Ugly staff. No free drink. Slowass elevator. No hot chicks around this stinky hotel. Expensive cost.

Our stay at the Howard Johnson was exemplary. The staff was froendly, peofessional, and very polite. We have stayed at some of the other hotels on the OC boardwalk, but they did not compare to the Howard Johnson. Convienent bathrooms, beach access, we will definitely visit again.

Horrible first n last experience at this Howard Johnson plaza hotel. I am here with my wife n 10 month old baby suppose to be a kids friendly place, but it's not at all… I payed almost $1300 for three night 4 the 4th july wknd n my 2 yr wedding anniversary n is not worth it… they said ocean view rooms I have side ocean view n alot of restaurant kitchen fans… the room smell like it the bathroom pipe brusted I have to keep the balcony door open to let fresh air in… am afraid of letting my kid play ard cuzz it's just feels dirty.

Restaurant was blah. 12 bux for a thin grilled chicken I could get better at mcdonalds sorry.

The staff were friendly and helpful. The location is good. The accommodations were just ok. I had to ask for a chair to be removed from the room for black mold on the cushions — health hazard to say the least. We had breakfast in the bistro downstairs and my grandson actually had a fly cooked into food. : (Unfortunately will not return to this hotel.

What I liked most about the Howard Johnson is the location and the staff hence why I'm giving it 4 stars. Upon check-in, I was greeted my the receptionist Mary who was so delightful and patient. The hotel is located right on the boardwalk by the infamous Brass Saloon's. They have a really good Italian Restaurant connected to the hotel. I suggest you get some Pizza & Pasta during the course of your stay. We were able to rent bikes at a reasonable price of 7/hr right in front of our hotel. The only thing I will say is that it's a bit on the pricey end of 300/night for rooms that are tiny. I booked a double room for 4 people and the bathroom could barely fit one person at a time. I really liked the fact that our room has a porch that faces the boardwalk so at night I sat & watched the fireworks.

Overall, hotel was what we needed… a place to stay. It wasn't luxurious, but it wasn't run down either. It was comfortable and nice to be that close to the Beach. I would probably stay here again.

Hotel as well is comfortable clean room and friendly people in lobby, but be careful with brothers restaurant is not part of hotel and they are real mean prices high and no quality food, also bad service go next door they have better price and friendly bartender.

Stayed on Memorial Day and the staff was really nice. The room was nice microwave, half fridge, and flatscreen with cable. Bathroom looked updated but small and the AC worked great. The balcony had a great view of the ocean and boardwalk. Brass Balls bar is right next door for cold drinks and good food just a little slowwith service. I would stay again but not unless it was July or August because it was cold and windy.

Nice location. The room was right on the boardwalk. Okay price for a boardwalk room reserved for the week before memorial Day weekend, booked the day before arrival. The room had a musty odor and my wife and I had a couple of items missing from our room. Nothing of significant value but items that indicated someone went through our belongings. We reported the missing items to the manager who asked for our name and number, even though we provided that info during check-in. Have not had any follow-up from the hotel. Also, I left my diabetic testing kit in the room at checkout needless to say, I never expect to see it again.

The hotel has a lot of character. The room was very clean and had a great view of the ocean. The staff was super nice and helpful. I only wish I had more time to enjoy the pool. Will definitely stay here again.

Had a very brief overnight stay here after a business event. The room with two double beds was not large but was comfortably arranged and cozy. Plenty of lighting and the heating/air ran perfectly without making a lot of noise. I have some back trouble and the bed was a bit stiff for me, but for others without back trouble it would have been fine. The room was very clean and tidy, as was the bathroom (which was nicely decorated and had a lovely pedestal sink). I enjoyed the large shower, which had perfect water pressure. The room had nice big windows and a balcony with French doors that would have been wonderful had it not been winter and freezing outside. The view of the beach was nice. Both receptionists I dealt with were polite and handled our transactions quickly and efficiently. The lobby is very richly decorated and has a nice warm feeling with a gas fireplace. I can't say anything about the value for my stay since I had a business discount and don't know the actual price of the room. The only thing I found out of order during my stay was a hole punched in the wall behind the door from where the door handle must have been slammed into the wall. Other than that, had a nice, brief stay, in and out without any difficulty or inconvenience.

The room was very clean and quiet with a great view of the beach and even the bay. The staff was super friendly. The lobby is cute and you can see into the restaurant area. I would definitely stay here again.

Booked this hotel for a group of co — workers via the hotels very friendly sales office. Received a great rate for the group and had a room block set aside so that each room could be paid for individually. Karen; was very friendly, answered all of my questions and went out of her way to accommodate my requests and special needs for the group.

All of the employees were very friendly and helpful. Looked on various travel and hojo's websites, but ultimately called hojo to clarify location and proximity to things in OC we wanted to see. Got best info and rate so booked!. Small room but clean and comfy, 11 easy walking blocks to Ferris Wheel on the boardwalk/ beach. Didn't use indoor pool/hot tub but like the rest of the hotel looked clean and inviting. Despite size of room, would recommend this hotel as good value and will return.
