Green Tortoise was amazing! A wonderful and friendly staff, great amenities, huge ballroom, karaoke, and the breakfast chef was hilarious and made great food. They do events for guests to attend if they want like curry night, and made everything very welcoming. The location of the hostel is great, too! Right near so much fun. Tons of walkable places. And for a very good price as well. I'm going to stay there whenever I'm in town.

It is an amazing hostel. Free sauna, huge dining room and kitchen, shuttle service to the airport, great knowledge on informations tourists needs & super friendly staffs. Free breakfast everyday, you can cook your own eggs however the way you want them, fruits, and bagels. Free vegetarian dinner every Monday, Wednesday & Friday. They do food runs so you can get other free food as well, like pastries, sandwiches, etc. I like one of the staff, Joe and her enthusiasm, really makes a great first impression of the hostel.

The location is amazing and the staff was so friendly! They had lots of free food which was amazing. Check out their social activities! Worth the time for sure. I ended up being able to stay with a friend so I stayed one night of my previously booked three and they still gave me a refund! I'm super duper impressed and will stay with them again in any city!

The place is situated on the top of a hill in a sort of red light district, but it is safe. Shared a bottom bunkbed with a friend, two others who didn't know each other slept above us without any railing separating them. The room appeared to be one-star hotel level of clean, no bugs or serious problems but not spotless by any means. The sheets barely stayed on the bed and the room was hot with only a small fan, but it was good enough for me, an insomniac, to sleep through the night. The desk service was fine enough. Baggage storage in a small room is free until 8pm and accessible only by asking at the front desk and showing a baggage storage card with your name on it, so it is relatively secure. There are many interesting in-house events and features. It was okay.

Fantastic experiance and stay. The staff was amazing and super helpful. Rooms are small but clean same with bathrooms. Location is in a party area and the hostel itself encourages the get together atmosphere. Easy access to Fisherman's Wharf and other cool tourity areas. 10/10 would stay again.

I love it here. My little private bedroom was clean, cozy and full of light. The ballroom has a great vibe for being social or alone and all the staff are lovely, helpful and enthusiastic. Also very understanding about reservation changes or other things.

I lived three days at Green Tortoise Hostel, and I really appreciated to stay there. All was awesome. We had free breakfast every morning, two free dinners and at San Francisco food is so expensive that I saved money, my bed was comfortable and under it, there was a big locker to keep my stuff safe; moreover, there was a dry sauna inside the hostel. In brief, I highly recommend this hostel.

Friendly staff and fairly clean (especially for a hostel). Few blocks from Chinatown and Italian neighborhood. Complimentary bagels and fruit every morning. This was my first experience at a hostel and I had a fantastic time. It's advertised as a party hostel but it's quiet.

Super cool hostel in the middle of the party neighborhood of San Francisco. Here you can meet many nice people from all parts of the world. The famous Pier 39 and China Town are within walking distance. There is also a bus connection. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Recommended at any time.

The best way to experience San Francisco. Friendly staff, home-style meals, live music, great location. I made such great friends and memories at GT. I would recommend it to anyone, especially young people (of heart or body! ) looking to have a wonderful San Fran experience.

Cool hostel. Public transport is easy to access from here. There are buses right outside to take you to most of the tourist places… or the buses will connect you to other bus lines and trains to get you to further places. The staff here is really helpful. Just ask and they will try help you as best as they can. Reception area has lots of maps to help you get around San Francisco. They have car parking at a charge. Call in adcance for this.

The hostel is located near the Little Italy district of San Francisco, near lots of excellent coffee shops and Italian restaurants. For international travelers staying at the hostel, free breakfast is provided every day, dinner almost every day, private rooms, clean shared bathrooms, and several other amenities are offered at no extra charge or an affordable cost. Great place to stay in the city.

A good hostel near San Francisco clubs.

The hostel was a great affordable option in the north beach neighborhood. Super cool activities planned every night. Relaxed atmosphere. In a wonderful location! highly recommend. Staff was super helpful and nice.

Great location and price. Free breakfast every morning and dinner Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. 24hr easy access. I go to bed early and didn't have any issues sharing bunk room. I also enjoy the bunk rooms because it makes me get out instead of just staying in the room all day. Make sure to book directly through Green Tortoise website for best price and request in the comments if would like to be in the same room as someone else or would like a bottom or top bunk. My request preference is a bottom corner bunk.

A great hostel, in the hilly heights of San Francisco, a stone's throw from China Town, the legendary bars and bookstores of the "Beat generation" and Little Italia. The team that manages the place is very friendly and offers many activities, such as concerts, outings, or even free dinners.

Good people to work with film companies.

Normally I don’t write reviews for accomodations but this one stood out for me, in a positive way. The staff is kind and helpful, they are extremely well priced for what you get (free, amazing, breakfast and dinner 3x a week) and they are located very conveniently (the nightclubs didn’t bother me one bit, I even felt safer here than in another hostel on Bush st). They were even able to house me when I called them unexpectedly on Christmas day, due to an emergency in my family. To make it short, you guys were great and really did save my Christmas and i’ll never forget that. Thank you.

As a hostel goes, this was a great experience. It is a little old but that adds to its character in my book. Fits the party hostel description. Easy walk to anything you might need. I would definitely go back. The value was good.

Really nice hostel! We stayed in a separate building they have that is like an apartment so we could have a bit more privacy. Everyone is nice and helpful. The rooms are clean.

Stayed for four nights and we loved it! Clean, vibrant place with very helpful and kind staff. Lots of activities and information at the ready but a great place to chill if that's more your thing. Well equipped kitchen with the nicest chef in town!
Couldn't fault our stay! On a personal note I also had trouble with a parcel being shipped back home which got returned to hostel after I left. The staff helped out immensely to get it re labelled and sent off for me. Went above and beyond and I am truly grateful :)!

Best backpacker-style hostel in town. Not as sterile as the (also nice) HI hostels in the Tenderloin. More character in the style, more community among the people. Huge, beautiful common area is unrivaled. Fairly central, walkable to many places and of course great public transport. Free quality tea and leftover random food in a beautiful corner of the common area is a nice end to a SF night.

They really care about you as a hostel guest. Everything was well maintained and clean and the staff is super friendly. The beds are wooden! :) The free dinners are good and the community you encounter is very welcoming and friendly. The showers are integrated in the bathrooms and their number is comparably small so you can expect some waiting time in the mornings.

The location is very good. In our case we were 3 and the room was too small size and we practically had no place to move. It has No elevator to get to the upper floors. The rooms do not have a private bathroom or air conditioning. The parking is expensive in the area and the hostel does not have free parking. You have to pay U $ s 1 for the towels and does not include housekeeping in the rooms. The attention of the staff was very good, in our case we had paid for 5 nights. After the first night we decided to go to another accommodation and we returned the money. We had the inconvenience we had paid with card and within 15 days of having been there, we still don't get the refund on the card.
In the area you can get superior accommodations with rooms with 2 double beds + private bathroom + Free parking for 10 dollars less than this hostel. In private rooms for 2 or 3 people I do not recommend it.

One of the best hostel I've ever stayed. The staff is really nice and helpful, modest but very good and welcomed breakfast. They are also offering dinners on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights, live music in the international room and some drinks. Wow! I also liked a lot that they are very good organized and eco friendly. The rooms and bathrooms are clean and with inspirational quotes on the walls. Really safe (you can't enter in the hostel without showing the key at front desk), and it's located in a good neighborhood. I highly recommend this hostel! This hostel is the best possible hostel in SF. Way too safe and secure and way too much fun at the same time. We hostellers had amazing nights and dinner together. Met awesome people from different parts of the world. If I visit SF again, this place is going to be my stay. And book directly from their website as other sites charge booking deposit which is not refundable.

We were in the private room with my girlfriend and place was friendly, clean, everything worked. We were really satisfied. Free breakfast, 3 free dinners per week and lots and lots other good qualities. We liked it a lot. Was really just what we needed and location is pretty much center of it all.

Charming and well located place.

The location is excellent and is in walking distance of many great sights and attractions in the city — union Square and fisherman's wharf both within 20 minutes walk. The entire place was incredibly clean and there were lots of bathrooms on each floor so the wait for a shower in the morning was not too long. Very cool place to stay.

The location of the Hostel is great, with easy access to some more popular places being on Broadway. It certainly provides good, clean facilities, but they feel more like apartments than a homey feeling (which is to be expected from a hostel). Location — Great Rooms — Little bit stuffy but good with an alright view. Service — Great: friendly, helpful, and thorough Prices — Reasonable. Lots of attached and added on prices for some things. Food — Great space to cook, as well as an alright breakfast if you can wake up early enough. All-in-all, a solid cheap choice, but nothing to push it above-and-beyond all others.

Rooms were clean and comfortable, public areas such as cafeteria were clean. Free breakfast every morning with the basics was a great perk. Front desk staff could be a little more versed in area things, one attendant didn't give us the correct information on the public transit system.

My wife & I loved our stay at the Green Tortoise, no doubt a traveler's hostel. You don't get an experience like this anywhere else in the States. It's a very large hostel; quite possibly the largest International group of travelers I've come across other than in Europe. There's almost a family like atmosphere for dinnertime among the guests, easy to meet new people. Bathrooms were cleaned regularly. There's a good rate for rooms that are split with double bunk beds. We will be back for sure!

I absolutely loveeeed this Hostel. 1st off the staff was super nice and friendly. Is the place outdte a bit, yes but its clean. In my opinion VERY clean. I appreciated little details abt this Hostel: bathrooms were full bathrooms (sink, toilet and shower), showers had soap, shampoo and conditioner dispensers, beds were actually comfortable, rooms were clean and had windows, sheets were put on the bed for you, breakfast was amazing (quite s selection) and dinner was delicious. They provided breakfast and dinner for us the days we were there. Nice computer area and nice storage area for your bike. I liked the vibe of the place and the guest were much more friendly and diverse. I also liked they were very environmentally friendly. We stayed in another Hostel on our last 2 nights and I wish we had booked Green Tortoise Hostel for all 4 nights. I will def stay in GTH next time Im here. I felt safe, comfortable and at home.

Green tortoise is definitely a great place to stay either for solo backpackers or for a group of young friends who are able to live together and save a lot! Not only did the service and staff very nice, but they provide a lot for a new comer to explore in the city. The most helpful features for me is: 1. They organize discounted local activities such as I joined a group of friends to a noodle restaurant and enjoyed a great comedy show for only $11! 2. They sell and send postcards for me 3. They provide free breakfast of very good quality as well as free dinner on certain nights of the week 4. The restroom is private with access for one person only at a time 5. The bed is very comfortable and 4 people per room is quite manageable 6. The location is very convenient with several bus stops connecting to most places of the city 7. Meet friends from all over the world and be brave to communicate 8. I am a fan of greenish staff and everything here is green :) All in all, I really enjoy the stay here! A few more suggestions for the incoming visitors are: 1. Better bring your own little lock if you don't feel safe, although they sell a kind of key-lock (not a password lock) at $10 per each 2. Ask yourself if you could handle situation of sleeping in a room with foreigners with potentially unpleasant behaviors such as snoring or getting up way earlier than you… (I met some in other hostels…) 3. Oh! They don't have elevators so be aware 4.

A good place where you can meet different types of people while you rest.

My mom and I have been staying here for the last three days. We arrived a couple of hours before our check-in time and our room was already spotlessly clean and prepared for us. We had no problems with money or deposits. All the staff have gone out of their way for us and been super warm and friendly and giving. The hostel has been beyond generous with their food, with ample free breakfasts and even a free dinner while we stayed here. When I was having trouble getting our TV to work, during their busy time they sent someone right away to help. My mom and I came here because we had heard good things about this place and it turned out to be even better than we had imagined it would be. We highly recommend this place.

Very special hostel with special residents… Breakfast was not quite what I expected but 3 stars that the room was clean and you could stay well… Suitable for temporary stays!

Good hotel, but a little big for my style. Clean, fun, and good location.

Bunk beds are open with no railing, so next guy's feet kept touching me throughout the night. They also demand a $20 cash deposit (no mention of this on hostelworld) and have an atm conviniently sitting there that they earn fees on. Feels like they're trying to squeeze a few extra $$ out of each guest, but you know they're making millions on the location (I calculated they're generation $400, 000 a month). They also make you change your sheets and bring bedding down and will charge you another day if you are 15 min late. They need to pay their employees more, upgrade the beds and stop the hard-a$$ fees.

The facilities are ok, the breakfast is great, the location is convenient. The worst part is the staff, quite pretentious people who behave the exact opposite of the californian hippy look they want to have … They will really treat you like you are 5 years old, and you will pay for any extra service, from towel, to 15 minutes late on the check out or for lockers… You will feel like you've been granted an incredible favor each time you ask for something regular …

The location was a little weird for me personally, every night while walking back home we'd walk by all the strip clubs and be called to come inside. I don't mind per se, but a little weird. It was in an awesome location in so far as the neighborhood was pretty clean and it was easy to get around. Rooms were clean and cute, bathrooms clean functional. Free breakfast everyday, including raw eggs (cook 'em yourself). Me and my wife were put in a smaller building down the street a bit, dunno why, but I didn't mind. Only thing to dislike about that was walking over to grab a bite in the morning. Boohoo, I know. They had activities every night from Beer Olympics and Paper Rock Scissor tournaments to Pub Crawls and dining crawl kinda thing. Free vegetarian dinner 3 days out of the week. I can't remember what the days were… And we never tried it though we meant to, we were just out too late. Um. Yea I think that's it.

We enjoyed the place where we stayed 2 nights. The atmosphere is friendly and the staff is very welcoming. At night on the street side it can be sometimes a bit noisy. But the feeling is very positive, we could come back without hesitation.

I must honestly say that there is no place in SF proper or in the San Francisco Bay Area I can imagine I would prefer over the GT hostel. If I were a rockstar, this would be my joint. It's all about the experience; man. It's about the cozy little rooms, to the ballroom. The faint smell of weed from an unidentifiable source, to the bowl of bagles next to the industrial conveyor belt toaster in the morning. The staff are never without a smile on their face, and if you are awake in the middle of the night, don't hesitate to strike a conversation with the person behind the desk. The staff has an informal style, a personal touch, and charisma to them you will never find at a Best Western or a Hilton. The guests are every bit as international. Around one table in the ballroom (a. K. A International Room) don't be surprised if you find yourself sitting with a Scotsman, a Mexican, an Iranian, a Russian, a Frenchman, a Chinese man, a Filipino, a Norwegian and an Indian, just striking a conversation. Look forward to the best stay of your life, guaranteed.

The hostel is in a fantastic location with a great deal of tourist atractions within walking distance and public transportation of all kinds very accessible. The vibe of the place is phenomenal, very old America, kind of beatnik, exactly what you would want coming to SF. My partner and I stayed in a private rom with bunk beds for two nights. It had a fantastic view. The staff were friendly and helpful; they even let us store our luggage both before we checked in and after we checked out. For $30/person per night? Definitely a place to consider.

I'm about half-way through my six night stay. I have a bottom bunk in a four bed women's dorm room. Room is nice size. Hooks on the wall and on the bunk beds' end posts which are convenient. Rooms are a bit cool in January, but barely remarkably so. There is a sink in the room which is unusual in hostels. The bathrooms are tiny, but perfectly adequate. Shampoo, conditioner and l are provided. Breakfast is more than adequate. Lots of bagels with guillotine cutter and toaster. Jelly, marmalade, peanut butter, cream cheese, orange juice, oats, chia seeds, coffee, choice of teas, choice of sweeteners plus a few other things. Should be sure to mention plenty of eggs to cook up however you want. Oh, best of all, fresh fresh fruit. FRESH! Pineapple, orange slices, melon slices. Whole milk only. Best coffee I've had in a hostel. Lots of fridge space for personal stuff. The social/breakfast room is a rather grand room with high ceilings. Quite the thing to see! Some staff are VERY FRIENDLY and super helpful. Some are … here. Not bad, but chill, I guess. Neighborhood is ummmm convenient. Near Chinatown and City Lights bookstore. Also near quite a few strip bars. I've explored Chinatown and the bookstore and walked past the strip bars. Oh, reception desk is one flight up and then rooms are one or two flights up from there. No elevator. My bill for six nights is a bit over $200. Plus $20 cash key deposit plus $1 for towel. Plus 3% for credit card. Definitely would stay here again.

Great location, just great location. It's minutes from Chinatown. There are free breakfast and free dinners three times a week. Staffs are very nice.

The facilities were clean and the staff was awesome. They have free breakfasts and free dinners on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. What I enjoyed the most was the wonderful common area. It was a huge hall and made it easy to meet other travelers and make new friends. I happened to be there until Christmas day. I unfortunately had to leave on Christmas which meant I missed out on a special Christmas breakfast and dinner! The staff works hard to make your stay a wonderful experience.

I checked in Friday November 13th. There are a bunch of good stuff I'll review about this hostel. You can't beat the location and price, the hostel is located right on Broadway and Kearny, it is within walking distance to bars, restaurants, it is within walking distance to Chinatown, and I mean; that is a huge avenue of Chinese businesses and stuff, very cool, it is located in a very very safe area. Transportation is very easy to find, I wasn't driving so I didn't have a problem at all moving around. The hostel staff is super nice and very attentive, they answered all my questions and were definitely knowledgeable. Wi-Fi is complimentary, the also have computers available in case that you need to browse the internet. I called the hostel that same Friday and spoke to Fiona, she was very attentive and very nice over the phone and as well as in person, which of course made me feel I was going to the right place since the beginning. Dan, Fiona, Ness?, Ben, (and I can't remember the other girl's name) super super nice people. The building has no elevators, so if you're carrying a lot of luggage keep in mind you gotta go upstairs to get to the lobby. The hostel is (in general) kept very clean and neat, they offer dorms and private rooms. I was in a dorm, a 3 bed bunk, super nice individuals from all over the world. The bed bunks have lockers at the bottom where you can keep your stuff locked, the front desk sells the locks for $5, or you can bring your own. I was in the 3rd floor.

The price isn't necessarily the cheapest but it isn't overpriced either. Free Wi-Fi, okay bunk beds, 24 hr front desk, decent number of showers, and a small amount of free breakfast food you can't beat it in the heart of SF. Comparing to my experience with hostels in Europe it's pretty average but would stay there again.

Wonderful Hostel if not the best I stayed at so far. Great staff, very helpful and gave us great advice what to do and where to go in San Fran. We booked a private room for two and it was beautiful, clean and comfy. Enough bathrooms available on each floor. It can get crowded in the morning, but that's not a big issue. Loved how clean everything was. I was always excited for the huge and great breakfast. The atmosphere was amazing, especially the owner treated everyone like a familymember. He was a gentlemen too and carried our luggage up to the highest floor, where our room was. All in all a great experience. I will definitely be back! Staff very supportive. Great service! My friend left her phone at the Hostel after we checked out to get to the aiport. Immediately reacted and looked for the phone and sent it very quick to Seattle, where we stayed at for three nights to get on a cruise. My friend got her phone back in time. Awesome job, thank you very much!

Fun, conscientious clients, clean… the breakfast was better than any "hotel" I have stayed at. Desk staff helpful, great little incentives like bike rental and property storage after check out. Will stay again.

My boyfriend and I stayed in a private room in an annex of the hostel, a few blocks away, in a small quiet alley. It was very clean and welcoming and we slept great! Many of their private rooms are in this appendix, very quiet and clean. The staff was nice to us. There was a television in the room with a selection of movies. The neighborhood is well located to walk or take public transit to many points of interest. We were surprised by the quality of our bed (very comfortable) considering that it is a hostel!
A few negatives: there is a lot of bar and club in the district, the activity is intense until the morning (after hours) and we did not always feel comfortable to walk the streets at night. Also, there were several flies in the room upon our arrival (our window overlooked the building garbage).
The negatives were however not prevented us to enjoy our stay! We would return with pleasure!

Loved this place! It was my first hostel experience — my gf had been to a lot of them and wanted to try this one while in san fran. It seemed like a really clean and friendly frat / sorority house — everyone was friendly, breakfast was good. I liked how theyre was always free coffee brewing and you could use the kitchen whenever you wanted to. Room was cool, had everything you needed (including a box fan! ), and there were lots of clean bathrooms.

Great hostel. Nice staff, clean rooms, shower rooms and free Breakfast. All tourists are very sociable. If you drive one, then this is the perfect place.

Absolutely great staff, couldnt have been more helpful. We are a 50yo couple and stayed in one of the private rooms. The room was a good size, bed very comfortable, heater and hair drier provided as well as laundry facilities. The location was central to union square and the wharfs and we didnt have any probems with the area. If you are staying in winter I would suggest asking for a room on the 2nd or third floor so you dont have to use the outside stairs for the bathroom (toilets are on every floor do not a huge problem). Basic breakfast was provided — overall woukd highly recommend as an option if you are looking for reasonable pricd accommodation.

I've stayed in slums in Indian better than the Green Tortoise Hostel. I was there on business and it was one of the worst place I've ever stayed. Case in point, the sight of men urinating against the walls outside my room and the homeless defecating on the steps leading up to the front desk. The building itself is old and disgusting with decor from the eighties. The staff is a cast of starry-eyed youths, old, pasty white burnouts and hipsters each assuming they are something special and unique. They create a fake image of what they are so that they can “fit in” with the “different” and then try to surround themselves with people who are equally fake with claims of “uniqueness” and “individuality” they slowly weed out any real personalities from themselves until they are a simple mass of backward social conventions covered in the sent of patchouli. It gives the the place quite a vapid feel. The hostel staff was actually quite racist. I was asked to show travel documents to stay there another day as my work was taking longer than anticipated. I choose not to and booked a flight that day.

Ran by cowboys. If you don't fit their "vibe" they will unlawfully engage in criminal activity to force you out. The manager (evil Sarah) and GM (Tim or Ted but who cares) both were total idiots incapable of doing anything without violating basic civil and human rights of others. I am strongly considering filing a claim on Monday against them for legal justice. Also against their affiliates, such as "Amsterdam Hostel" which just caried on after them when I tried moving. The sneakiness and treatment of me as an idiot is just not acceptable to me.

Hostel is not new but keeping very clean and tidy. Crew is awesome, frendly and helpful. Location is excellent near financial district, Pier 33 and liquor store. Everyday free breakfast (decent) and delicious every second day FREE DINNER! Beyond everything it's cheap when you BOOK DIRECTLY on hostel's web page. Hope come back there one day! Keep doing good job guys.

Lovely place with great backpacker community. Very clean, Wi-Fi, enough bathrooms, safe lockers under the beds with enough storage for the biggest luggage, great breakfast and friendly stuff. Can only recommend this :).

Loved it so much I wish I could live there. The staff were all very happy to fulfill my ridiculous requests at all hours of the day and night. Free breakfast 7days a week free dinner Monday Wednesday and Friday the cook is also friendly. If you are by yourself then this is were you need to stay if you are 19 or 74 there are people for you. Great nightlife great location great everything. Thank you the green tortoise.

Great hostel. Friendly staff, cool group events every night, amazing views of the city. It's much cheaper if you book direct. A bed in the dorms was $30, a double $60.

One of the best hostels I've stayed at.

You. Will. Not. Sleep. cool atmosphere and commune room but having not been able to get any sleep due to the constant noise in all directions for the past two nights I feel like my time in San Fran has been hampered to say the least.

Absolutely wonderful Hostel. Came here on a Monday to take part in a Yosemite Adventure trip then spent Friday Night in one of their private rooms. The Vegan Meals I had here were excellent and the place was really clean and nice. The staff here regularly went out of their way to offer advice and were extremely helpful — on the day I left I needed to find a place to get a sandwich and food for my trip home, their recommendation of Molinari's was a Foodies Dream. Am definitely planning on staying here again.

We had a great experience. Staff was very helpful and friendly — — they had good recommendations for nearby restaurants. There's also a shuttle service you can use to get back to the airport (our flight left very early — no BART running), which was significantly less expensive than taking a taxi. We rented a private room, which was small, but clean and the bed was comfortable. We spent the majority of our time at the conference we were attending, but I have no complaints about our hostel experience. It's close to lots of good food, a nice coffee shop, and within walking distance of transportation. We would definitely return in the future.

If you want a different experience, this is the place. It is perfect for the q have adventurous spirit.
