We had the most fantastic time at Kona Kai. The resort was beautiful and the food was delicious. Our room was overlooking the courtyard and bay and loved listening to the birds in the morning. We had a lovely balcony and the weather was spectacular. Our vacation was a TEN!

Love this resort… beautiful views… excellent location. Private beach with cabanas and fire pits. Great pool area with bar and view of the marina. On site restaurant also overlooks the marina and has really good food and drinks. Amazing views in our one mile walk around Shelter Island. Picture is the view from our second story patio off of our room.

Sean at the front desk was awesome and made me feel very happy to be here. I love my room, patio and the huge tub. The rubber ducky and large fluffy towels were nice amenities.

Myself and my Wife stayed here on the second part of our honeymoon in August. It really was beautiful, scenic and relaxing with Gas fires on the private beach every night. Food was lovely and most the staff very friendly. Especially Moshe the Hotel Manager. On arrival our room request had been wrong but Moshe quickly sorted that out and went above and beyond to ensure we enjoyed our honeymoon stay with complimentary bottles of prosecco and treats with honeymoon best wishes messages to our room.
We really enjoyed our stay. If we had any minor complaint it would be to do with the restaurant and pool bar. Before we had finished meal every evening our bill was put on the table but we were still eating dinner and wanted to order more food and drink so we were not ready for Bill but for some reason this happened every evening.
The pool bar manager was bit grumpy and when asked for a straw with our cocktail we were looked at like we had ten heads and told "if we want a straw go get one from bar in Hotel". Maybe a few straws behind pool bar would be a suggestion!
Other than that we couldn't recommend Kona Kai enough and again Moshe is a great ambassador for Kona Kai!

Relaxing; very nice staff; great views.

My family stayed at Kona Kai for 6 days in August & thoroughly enjoyed the resort. The pool is great—water was a refreshing temperature for cooling off and for recreational swimming. The area is well maintained, with comfortable chairs & a few umbrellas for shade seekers. You can order lunch &/or drinks right from your pool chairs. I’m not talking about snack bar stuff… The food was amazing. Some of the best fish tacos I’ve ever had. Delicious sliders, sandwiches, etc. Fun poolside cocktails too.
The restaurant served a great breakfast. They even helped me make a special surprise on my young daughter’s birthday. The next morning, the servers put a little extra powered sugar on her pancakes, just to see her smile. It was a small gesture, but it touched my heart & I’ll never forget it. This resort staff was full of small touches like that, which made our stay extra special. It seems like a brilliantly managed resort, because everyone working there seemed happy and were very kind & helpful.
The room we stayed in seemed typical for a hotel in this price range. Not very big, but very clean with comfy beds/bedding & great toiletries. The best part was we rarely heard any noise from the hallways, outdoors, etc. Despite being very near a lot of activity. We slept great!
I’d recommend this resort for a family vacation— A couple days we scrapped our planned outings in favor of hanging by the pool & playing ping pong, corn hole, etc.

Some rooms are renovated and some are not. I got the room that was not renovated. They moved me to a different room that was just as bad (room came with bugs in the bathroom) I watched from the patio of a few people checking in, they tried to give everyone the same disgusting handicap room (nothing against anyone who needs a handicapped room-I just don’t) There’s nothing to do here. S’mores on the beach was a joke. There is nothing to do here. I would say don’t waste your time.
My birthday was blahhh because of this place. Would’ve had a better stay at the Embassy Suites.

Booked the room through Priceline. When we got there, they said they couldn’t find the reservation. 30 min later, they found it, but said they didn’t have any rooms ready yet. When booking it said “Standard Room”. We picked that. Then it said “Upgrade to the Deluxe Guestroom! ” We decided to do that… I asked the desk to make sure we got the Deluxe Guestroom not the Standard. She said the standard was the deluxe. It’s no different. I asked what the extra upgrade cost was t…hen (the pix were different). She shrugged. I asked when the rooms would be ready. She said it should be about 30 min. She said she call us. We left and went to Coronado Beach. 2 hours later, still no call, so we went back. They said they were still working on it. They say “private beach” but what they have is a sandbox next to the water, but the water is NOT accessible from the beach. Was told at check-in that valet was $30 and self-park was $30. That’s just garbage, no matter how you slice it. I said “we’ll self-park”. The front desk said “Well, it’s just easier if you valet… it’s the same cost. ” I said “It’s not easier if I have to wait for my car PLUS tip every time I want to leave. ” She said “Well this just helps you get to relaxing faster. ” I again said “Self Park is fine. ” She said “But it’s the same cost… ”. Finally I said “Yeah! And I don’t want to tip you guys! ” She wrinkled her nose and said “I guess at least it’s honest… ” WTF?

So disappointed with the team at this hotel. Had a client of ours stay there who had a terrible experience. I ordered a bottle of wine to be delivered to the room as a nice surprise. After 5 phone calls over 24 hours, a few promises — nothing. A bottle of wine! How you do one thing, is how you do everything. Would not recommend.

We love this resort and I am sure you will too. It overlooks the bay on one side and the marina on the other. Nice and relaxing atmosphere. The pool is very accommodating and looks over the mega yachts. They were building an additional pool a couple of months ago, I’m not sure if it is finished yet but it looked good from what I saw. If you have a boat, and if there is space available in the marina, this is a really nice marina to be a part of. You get parking and gym membership fees included with your slip. Wonderful stay & perfect location! Parking was $27 per day self or $29 valet. I read some previous reviews that stated otherwise. The hotel had a complete renovation as of I believe June or July. The beds weren’t as comfortable as home, but manageable. The hotel was clean and the grounds were beautiful. The best part of the stay were the views from the restaurant. The food was very good for a hotel. We enjoyed playing checkers in the lobby while we were waiting for our room to get ready. We will be back in the future. Downtown San Diego isn’t kid friendly in our opinion so this is a better place with little ones for sure & super kid friendly. Shelter Island has spectacular views and parks across the street, great for biking or a picnic!

This is a beautiful hotel. We had issues with the AC in the room but after contacting the front desk they sent someone up to get it taken care of. Once it was fixed the room cooled wonderfully. Overall a nice hotel with great amentites. Definitely recommended for anyone coming to San Diego looking for a great view of the ocean.

I actually really liked this hotel but stayed for a business trip so obviously needed a receipt for business documentation. At check out they said something was wrong with their printer and they would email me the receipt. That never happened. It’s been a week and half. I regularly call/email them daily asking for this receipt, even showing them the charge on my bank account. They keep saying “oh of course we will send you the receipt” and then never do. I would be satisfied with either a refund of my parking & resort fee OR simply just a receipt of those spends. At this point it seems that I need to get the BBB involved and also probably alert my bank to this unethical behavior.

Very nice resort property in a great location at the end of Shelter Island. Rooms are very nice although some of the furnishings are starting to show wear. All the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. One staff member in particular, Sean at the front desk deserves the gold award for customer service, efficiency and ability to make you feel welcome. A young man but already fine-tuned in the art of hospitality! Maid service was impeccable and timely. Utilized room service for a birthday morning breakfast celebration and everything was delivered on time, hot and as ordered. A couple suggestions — providing robes would be a nice touch and ice machines are a bit too sparse and difficult to find.

My husband and I spend a nice 3 days 2 nights at Kona Kai Resort and Spa. I cant speak for the spa, fitness center or Vessel restaurant, but pools and room we great! I really like that they have an adult pool because the kids pool was totally packed with kids, which is great for them but not what I felt like being around these past couple days. I loved the area where the bond fires were at night and to be able to walk around in a nice calm area was relaxing. Although I didnt… take advantage of the fitness center I plan on doing so next time, it seemed to be a popular place. I also loved how the location of the resort was so close to fun touristic places like Gaslamp District and Little Italy to name a couple. The only thing I would change is get a room on a higher level, maybe top, not a floor room because we did have a family above us and in the morning it sounded like there was a bunch of cows running back and forth! Lol I would also try the Vessel… we didnt this time around because we went out to some great local restaurants that had been recommended. Other than that the front desk peeps were nice and friendly. However, I would prefer that parking and valet be included. It definitely helps the feel of the place more calm and relaxing to not worry about how much parking is costing when we already pay a resort fee. I have gone to a few other resorts and parking and/or Valet are included and it makes for a much nicer visit.

Kona Kai is on Shelter Island, which is a beautiful, quiet part of San Diego. It's a little far from Downtown but worth it for the relaxing atmosphere. The scenery is really nice around the hotel. The hotel itself is kinda old and some common areas look like they can use an upgrade, but the rooms are newly renovated and clean. The restaurant is also quite good.

Ok have to start with Milo at the front desk was awesome they had my room wrong totally fixed it and upgraded us woohoo room was absolutely amazing and vessel was yummy told friends let's come back next month. Ok here is where it goes to hell. We check out I asked why we were charged $330.74 the girl told me it was for accidental. I said well I thought that was $50 a day? She basically say ya don't know fine. We were prepaid so whatever. This is noon on the 15th. We left 3 hrs later we get notification from the bank they charged us $380. I instantly call the manager Liz and say whoa what is going on she explains that travelocity sent it over as needing to be paid? I said well the amount you charged wasn't my bill? On Friday when I checked in you knew it was paid in full She assured me it wasn't a charge but just a hold. I then called my bank to file a fraud complaint on the charges and find out nope it was a charge. I then called back and spoke to Joanna where she read off a card (because she was speaking said the wrong line and started over) that they only charged me resort fees and parking. I asked her ok so how much is daily hold again $50 so I asked why was I charged 330? She said I don't know and it was released. When I asked about the new one 3 hrs later she said both were released at noon. I said oh you charge twice for the same stay for the same thing. She stuttered and went back to her written card.

Our third stay here. Restaurant is fantastic, food and service was great and considering we had seafood for our meals, $66.00 for three of us was a deal! Fair room rates with great views, beautiful grounds, convenient private little beach area. The layout of the property can be a little frustrating since signs are not placed in the best areas. Confusing grounds layout which makes night arrival an annoying experience, all three times we stayed. Recommend: bringing your own smores kit to enjoy out at the free firepits on the beach, your own bottled water, and towels. Towels in rooms were scarce all three stays. Had to ask for more. Also, have yourself a bell escort you to your rooms if arriving in the later evening, tired or with much luggage. Otherwise, you will enjoy your stay at this great resort.

One of my most favorite places to be. Facilities are clean. Staff is friendly. Club members are friendly, unlike silver gate… pool is great, fun events throughout the day and evening, location is near many amazing restaurants and bars. Love it here.

Beautiful location. The hotel could use some upgrades. The halls have dated and worn carpet. Not an ideal place to share a room with someone as the bathroom is not very private. The views are phenomenal. The restaurant moves very slow when it gets crowded so be patient. The food (when you finally) get it is decent.

Amazing service. Every employee was charming, very kind, and went above and beyond for us. Pool area was the best part. Beach was amazing. Watersport rentals were clutch. Our bathroom flooded but the supervisor took great care of it and us. Thank you Kona Kai!

Unbelievable place! Perfect location far from the crowd. Very friendly staff. Nice rooms, and very very dog friendly. Yes there are ants but it's expected near the ocean. Love this place! I don't think we'll stay anywhere else.

Found a great deal on this hotel that was recommended by a friend. After 2 years of looking but a reasonable rate finally opened up. No issues checking in. View of the marina. Easy accessible pool and private beach. Can't speak for the people on the far side but we were right there. Only thing, we ordered dessert they said it would be 45 minutes but it took over an hour. When it got there it was tiny and bland, but the dessert doesn't warrant a low score. The weekend was great.

We had dinner at the Vessel and it was great. The variety of food was good and the drinks were very unique. They even had a live band playing and there was no fee to listen. The service was outstanding. We really enjoyed the restaurant.

While this is an extremely beautiful location with relatively kind service, we had a couple issues that were not remedied. Upon arriving and checking in at the hotel we were not given our original room of two beds which we got through third-party service. I understand that that is not the primary way to get a room here but nonetheless we reserved a room with our two beds. Instead they gave us a king. They accommodated us with a cot… Secondly upon checking out we were charged over $110 for hidden fees that we were rather aggravated about since they were very well hidden from us. The first fee was for guest parking at $27 a day. We stayed for two days so that was almost $60 to park all of 5 feet from Public parking which would cost zero. It was not brought up to us after that would be a charge since we paid for a room and would imagine that as a guest of the hotel and resort would be a guest to park. We were also charged a resort fee! This whole place is a resort so it was hard to understand why it be an extra fee on top of our room. They were not very accommodating, or at least not what one might expect from a “high-end” resort.

Beautiful area with awesome firepits overlooking the boat arena. A great place to stay if you want to disconnect from things, but still be close enough to drive to activities. However it is pretty far from anything if you like to go out walking to explore the area.

Great location right off Shelter Island and I had a very pleasant stay, but it definitely shows signs of it's age. The phone in my room looked and worked as if it was from the 90s. Although it has a great view off the peninsula it feels pretty isolated, you need a car to get anywhere.

Let me preface this by saying, that we stayed at the Kona Kai last year and had a good experience. However this last time on March 5th and 6th 2018, it was a different story. When we arrived at our room in building 5, the bathroom had a colony of ants coming up through the tiles. We called the front desk and got no answer. I went down and waited at the front desk for someone to show up. A young man, Shawn I believe showed up and I told him about the ants. He said he would send someone up to spray. I voiced my concern about the poison fumes and sleeping there that night. He said that they would air out the room. He offered us a $35 dollar resort credit which was never honored. After returning to our room we decided to call Shawn and ask to be moved. He said they were totally booked and there were no rooms. A maintenance person came and sprayed down the bathroom and part of the baseboard next to the bed. No-one aired anything out nor did anyone clean up the ant carcasses, they were just left everywhere. We used a towel to mop some of them up and aired it out as best we could before going out for the night. The next morning we were to meet friends for the day. My wife woke up very sick to her stomach and was not able to go out. She spent most of the day on the balcony to avoid the poison smell. The maid came in and cleaned but there were still ant carcasses left on the floor. The next night was better as the poison had likely dissipated.

I went with family for brunch. The reataurant decor was great. The service was extremely attentive but not overbearing. I had the pulled pork hash and it was really tasty!

Beautiful place with excellent service.

The resort is beautiful, the service is great, and it's easy to get around. There's a pool, a private beach, a gym, a restaurant, and it's close to the bay and a concert venue (search Humphreys concerts). They have spaces available for weddings and for corporate meetings and it's close to the airport and downtown (not walking distance though). There are live bands in the restaurant at night, just check the schedule online. The off peak rates are reasonable considering the location. Get away and relax.

Very nice hotel right on the water. When I woke up in the morning I could see hundreds of boats parts right behind my room. There were for bonfires on the beach at night. The food I had there in the hotel was excellent. It was on a peninsula so there's water on two sides of the hotel. It was a beautiful place with a nice room and great food.

Our stay at Kona Kai was wonderful! The food at Vessel restaurant was delicious, the view of the marina was beautiful, the bed was comfortable, and the service was excellent! When would love to stay here again.

Was in a new renovated room which looked very modern. Had a nice view overlooking the pool/jaccuzi area. Staff was very helpful. Would definitely come back.

Kona Kai is beautifully located right on the bay. Their rooms are clean, staff friendly, and pool area welcoming. We enjoyed late nights on the beach with their natural has bonfires. Will come again!

Great place for dinner, I️ has the clam chowder a salad and scallops. It was so good, I️ love the bread and how the pre sprinkled with salt. Great service, they have live music and great service.

Location is great and resort looks good too. However, there were bugs coming out of bathroom and construction crew was loud early in the morning. View from the room was great looking at the marina. Hotel crew was friendly. Did not try the food on the resort so can't say much about it. Service fees and parking fees are too much (~$50 total/day) and self-parking was not allowed during the stay so ended up paying for valet. Overall, an average experience.

Good place to stay but make sure you have a vehicle to wonder around because you're at the end of the island. No beach to swim around here and it's a few miles away. No elevator if you pack a lot expect to exercise. Soap, shampoo, lotion are great to use here.

Nice place to stay. Great location. Quiet, great view of the bay. Construction is happening there right now. It was just outside my room, so the wake up call of the noise was early during the week. Also, parking can be a bit of a challenge when they have an event going on.

This hotel is on the pricey side even for the area. I booked it anyways because thinking it would be nicer. It's not nicer, and they will increase the cost somehow. We avoided the horrendously overpriced parking only to be charged a resort fee. So FYI that is completely unavoidable since we didn't even use the facilities. Just be honest and increase the price. I may have even booked anyways. However, now the entire stay has been cheapened.

I wanted to try a new resort, and from the website it looks and sounds fantastic! We pulled up and the wait to get in the driveway was 20 minutes. I asked Guest services for a room facing the marina, after looking at the view of the bay. Although I paid MORE for the bay view room, they told me I could not "downsize" to the marina view because I paid for the Bay side. This room gave me a view of the awesome parking lot with car alarms going off all night. I took my daughter to the pool for the ONE night we were there, and a nice kid decided to poop in it, so it was closed the rest of the night. So much construction going on, the resort was a hot mess. The only nice people I encountered were the staff from room service, which was the only decent part of our trip. Find yourself another resort — don't waste your time and money. I was disgusted with our stay.

Kona Kai is amazing! Theres an outdoor pool next to the ocean, and lots of fun games in the lobby. The rooms are also pretty nice too. The showers have really good soap. Better than the ones you would see at a Motel 6.

Live the quaint resort. Had to get use to no signs to tell you where ice machine is… yes… its a big deal and I did ask. I wouldn't have found it otherwise. They want this place to stay quaint and not have that hotel feel. I don't blame them… great place to stay. The walk around the resort is awesome.

Wow! Me and my fiancé came here for our honeymoon! I must admit it is worth the extra money you spend to get a room with a view of the yachts. The pool and private beach was picture perfect! Chill, relaxing, California vibes! My only "complaint" would be the restaurant food and the drinks at the pool bar tasted more like juice than alcohol. Will come back!

From the time we checked in to when we check out our experience was great. From the valet to the front desk including the outdoor bar and restaurant the people working there were friendly and did everything possible to make our stay wonderful. We brought our dog, and the staff were just as friendly to our pet. The room was great. Honestly had no complaints about Kona Kai. We are looking forward on going back. Other than having to wait eight hours to check into our room, the resort itself was pretty nice. It is under construction right now, but the harbor view from the room is beautiful. The walk along the beach at night is great with the fire pits. The staff is incredibly helpful for the most part.

Stayed last night after attending Jimmy Buffett concert at Humphrey's. When I called to ask how far the walk was the woman told me only 5 minutes. Actually 20 minutes so had to call Uber to get to concert on time. Location is 5 stars but that is about it. Poorly laid out… they don't give you a building number just a room number and a map that is NOT accurate, room very hard to find. For the price ($279), I thought the rooms would be much nicer. Kind of run down and the a/c was very loud, fridge had a bad smell in it. Great view of Marina from room but could not utilize patio due to pigeons hanging out and tons of bird poop on furniture and ground, disgusting. Had room service breakfast and my daughter and I both ordered eggs benedict and coffee. Coffee was cold and the eggs benedict were virtually unedible. Definitely would not stay here again nor recommend to anyone, what a disappointment.

Stayed in a Marina Room. View is beautiful, service is great. Spent most of my time relaxing on the balcony with a cup of wine. Truly is a relaxing, quiet spot. Call the day before and you can request a first or second level room.

In the beginning we felt very rushed and we're told to order brunch before the 2 PM mark. 20 minutes later my wife and I received two eggs Benedict plates and we're told by the server that the rest of our party (4 people) needed to order something else because they ran out of holiday sauce. This created frustration for two reasons. 1) the waitress not realizing that they only had very little holiday sauce and 2) for bringing out two dishes and then letting the rest of the party know that they ran out of holiday sauce and had to order something else, while my wife and I eat. Not sure what they were thinking when they brought out only two dishes, but that's what happened. They server should have came too our table wayyy before and told the whole party about the shortage so the rest of the party can order their food and have it out at the same time. My pep peeve is to have all parties order at the same time and all dishes out at the same time. Anyways the manager was very understanding and made sure the kitchen crew made some more holiday sauce which usually take about 8 minutes to make and everything went well after that… Food is very tastefull, view is amazing, service that day is usually spot on, but hopefully the staff understands that without customers there is no business, especially since in this day of age everyone reads reviews before making a decision.

My visit had pros and cons, I have to say the resort itself is very beautiful, the pool area overlooks the marina and the rooms are quite lovely, however the reason I'm only giving two stars is because we went several time to dine or drink in their restaurant and for such a nice resort I was baffled at how poor the service is, I'm a pretty calm and understanding person but the staff in the restaurant managed to test my patience. Not only every little request took forever, but certain things we ordered didn't even get submitted and we were waiting forever, I myself had to go ask for a soda refill by walking up to the bar, we left without dessert because it took over 40 min and I just ordered ice cream. We went for breakfast, lunch and dinner and all the service was poor for all those different times. I would come back to this resort but definitely would choose to dine elsewhere to not ruin the occasion.

It was very ridiculous that they said they don't have any 1 king bed room available and the reason they told me was when customers book trough 3rd party it's not guaranteed. I booked 1 King bed intently for Valentine's Day and it didn't show anything saying room type will only be a request. This kinda hassle should be solved between hotel and 3rd party and should not let customers to bare the risk. Plus, all the hotels that I booked before never had this problem. Definitely not recommend.

I thought the stay here was terrible. I purchased the breakfast in bed special and what a joke that was. They are supposed to give you a voucher when you check in but at 6 pm when we checked in they ran out so they told me to go back in the morning and they again fidnt have any so the hotel says to charge my room and they will give the money back. Well it took almost 2 weeks to do that and the rooms weren't that big at all for the money you pay. Next time I will just go back to Humpreys which is right down the road and is cheaper. Thank you Kona Kai for a horrible hotel experience, I will definitely tell all my friends and family about this terrible experience.

Resort is very clean. Overall nice location. Sometimes the maids gave bad directions. Parking price is too expensive. Good that the guests can carry alcohol in the open.

Tish was great! She hooked us up with an upgrade free of charge so that our rooms were in the same building! The resort is recently renovated and is beautifully themed! Beds were comfy and bathrooms were immaculately clean! I would definitely come back to this resort!

The private beach area is beautiful. The staff will even make and light your fire for you. The restaurant is also very nice. Extremely professional and beautiful design.
