Great hotel in the heart of Leidseplein. Room was good size but could tell it had not yet been renovated. Outdated carpets, floors cracked loudly, bathroom not up to cleanliness standards, wallpaper peeling from walls, high step/ledge when entering the room and bathroom which is unmarked and easy to stub your toes and electric outlets which you could tell had been burnt out in the past and not replaced properly. But the architecture and design of this building is something unique and special. Great restaurant and breakfast as well. Overall a great stay but next time I’ll pay a little extra for a newly renovated room.

Having traveled a bit I have to say this is very nice for a European hotel. The rooms have a bit more elbow room than you usually find and they were modern and had all the amenities. The concierge was nice enough to give me a bag of ice for my foot. If smaller older hotels aren’t your thing as a traveling American, you will be comfortable here.

When the asticin of the level rises even The smallest flaws become large. A 4-star hotel cannot have a double room with separate beds. You may not have a shower in the bathtub (and also small). One of the beds squeaks so much that it wakes you up in the middle of the night. Very dated Furniture. Very good Breakfast We travel a lot and definitely this is not 4 star Disappointed.

We had a wonderful stay here! The room was quiet and very comfortable. The entire staff was helpful, welcoming, and friendly. The location of the hotel can't be beat.

A great hotel. It has got some really nice rooms but they are a bit pricey. Breakfast it ok, nothing more. It close to a lot of attractions an pubs and restaurants.

Lovely hotel, from the center in a 10 minute quiet walk. Near the promenade, you may want to pay extra and take a room with a view. Clean, hotel restaurant on 3, very leisurely staff.

Stayed 3 days. Room has been completely redone, as others also. Tastefully decorated and well designed to take advantage of the smaller space. Restaurant is historic and dinner was delicious. All staff are friendly and very helpful. Will stay here again.

The hotel is in a perfect location, you can walk to the city centre easily. We would have appreciated if they told us about the construction works though, before offering us the upgrade for a dearer price to the front of the hotel where said works were being carried on. It was extremely noisy in the mornings. We were only staying for three nights and it was meant to be a relaxing break from our busy life, so we didn't want to ask for a different room on the second day and move everything. Overall decent experience but we're not feeling comfortable with the trick of making us pay more and be right next to construction workers.

We only drank one tea — but it was very oldschool with loose tea, cake pieces and great service served. Almost like the Viennese plush coffee!

Beds are comfy. Bathroom's a bit small. Depending on your room you may end up looking onto an enclosed courtyard. But the rooms are fine and a decent size. Well situated for touristy trips into the centre of town.

Very nice Ambiente. It's a really relaxed atmosphere in a classic bar. Futhermore everything seems to be a bit more luxury and there are some little food specials when ordering a drink. All in all it's not that expensive compared to the expectations I had when entering this Bar/Restaurant. So I recommend it!

Hotel is in a great location, nearby to many shops and restaurants. Rooms a little bit small very high quality. The hotel bar and restaurant are both very good as well with excellent staff!

It's not worth it. Very expensive and 3 star rooms. The breakfast was always the same. Not a toothbrush gives you. I don't recommend anything this hotel. Very disappointed.

Update after the second night: the reception and the concierge are really kind and I assume they feel sorry for the breakfast Dilemma. So I Updated this review from 2 up to 3 stars, because Overall it was a pleasent stay and If you skip breakfast you will really have a nice stay here. Let's start with the positive: the Hotel looks very pretty and the rooms including the bathroom are pretty big and nice. The staff is also kind. But let's move to the big con. It seems like the staff, especially in the kitchen is really unorganized. We ordered our breakfast to the room for 9:00, at 9:35 I complained for the first time and I was told that it should be on it's way, after 20 minutes I asked a second time, now I was told they will check up with the kitchen, after 15 more minutes of waiting I asked a third time and again it was checked with the kitchen, finally at 10:30 the kitchen called me and asked what we've ordered. While writing this critics I am still waiting for breakfast and it's now almost 11:00. Waiting 2 hours for breakfast on a 2 das trip to Amsterdam is nothing you would wish to do and should not happen.

The restaurant of the hotel is very art Deco. We eat a very good brewery kitchen.

Flee this HOTEL! After 38 years of fidelity Goodbye American Hotel.

No more buffet at breakfast as before! It was royal.
I've been going to this hotel since I was 12 years old with my parents and grandparents.
Now the service is done at the table it's interminable 20mn before someone takes the order and after Re 20 minutes waiting. Ridiculous and expensive portions.
and PB of comprehension with the staff who even speaking English brings you back unordered dishes.
Don, it's over for me!
Value for money totally unjustified.
Impacts to the right and left on the bathroom furniture of the screws that exceed.

Luxury, lovely building and delicious breakfasts.

Breakfast is not what it used to be! Unworthy of a hotel of this class. No more buffet. No choice or you have to pay! A simple black tray that is meant to be class & Classic in which it is impossible to eat. And unfortunately for us the same breakfast several days in a row… at €20 it hurts… and not refundable in addition.
I strongly advise against it. Too bad the rooms are not bad and the hotel well placed… but it ruins everything especially when we sell you QQS months ago a buffet breakfast and we do not see the color. Extremely disappointed.

On arrival we were offered a room without a usable balcony (completely full of rubble). Could have waited for another, but wanted to get started in a timely manner with our city tour (a discount would have been nice though). No indication that the double bed has only one common ceiling. The breakfast took forever and was very alienating (a little bit of sausage?!?, a small rubber-like cheese slice, fruit jelly, a tiny, hard thing that might be a bun, a half slice of raisin bread, a mini croissant) that We would not be able to book again next time. The room is otherwise but top as well as the location. We have parked for 2 €/2Tage on the P + R-parking lot bos en Lommeren and then drove in with the GVB-tram… very relaxed. For successful handling, it is essential to read the exact p + R/GVB condition (also visible on the net) … otherwise it would have been €28. Amdterdam is always worth the trip!

There was 5 of us and all we wanted was to have a coffee. However, they did not let us in and consistently changed their story of why we couldn't enter. Possibly because we aren't wearing suits? Or is it because they are rasict? Either way if you want to feel wanted, don't go there and support their predujice behaviour.

Great location for Van Gough museum! Exceptional dining room. Outstanding rooms, concierge services, close to good food (if not dining at the hotel) & easy excess to road & canal paths.

Comfy bed, lovely view. Bath is a good size, which has been really handy because we've done a lot of walking! Staff are polite and friendly and (like everyone in Amsterdam) speak excellent English.

Great staff at the bar! Not fast, but that's because they take their time to talk to and serve all their customers the way it's supposed to be. A gem in Amsterdam.

Good hotel, good location, strange rooms that don't match the look of the hotel. Some rooms are very cramped, such as on the mezzanine (the floor between the lobby and the first). The best experience is breakfasts. Very large range and high quality. One minus is that if you forget to order breakfast, breakfast will cost 19, 5 euros on the first day. Instead of 15 euros. Very carefully compare what you ate in the mini bar with the score at checkout. They can turn on something superfluous.

Very quiet and strategically located to go to the airport with bus 197 and close to the tram stop… From here you turn the center on foot or by bike if you prefer… Nice staff A little pricey… A few meters from the Teatro Melkveg.

From the outside beautiful, but in the rooms definitely not as on the site, view from the room in the ugly courtyard with noisy air conditioning, the price definitely not worth it.

Cafe American is a good landmark if you meet with someone who does not know much about Amsterdam. It's in the central area, the cafe is big, its ceiling is very high and the food is of good quality. A pretty fountain in front of the building.

Small room with a very small balcony. Even I have asked to extend with one day my stay there, they have ignored my request and thet have responded too late… negative. Even we have paid from the beginning, the hotel have asked additional 50 Euros — deposit… maybe because we leave in Africa. The American girls that have made "bread deposit" from breakfast in their bags… they haven't paid 50 Euros deposit. Even we have requested on Booking rooms with balcony, the hotel have charged 10 Euros additional for one person balcony… small and tinny. Not enough towels for 2 persons. No slippers. And so on. This is our experience in Amsterdam. A room of 300 USD/night taxes included. 4* hotel. The positive reviews is for breakfast and cleaning services only.

Very well positioned for sightseeing and evening entertainment. Hotel nice, no walk in shower. Lots of steps, not suitable for old or infermed. Staff all helpful, good food.

Pleasant experience overall. Had a very nice bar with a cozy atmosphere, and our room had a decent view over the canal. Loud party boats, poor elevator service and housekeeping waking us up despite a do not disturb sign brought this stay down to 3 stars for me.

Magical and ideal to have a drink.

Perfectly positioned in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The room was comfortable and clean. The breakfast was delicious. The staff was very friendly.

We had already at check-in in the morning, the great luck that our room was already ready. A wonderful room on the fifth floor were very clean, large enough, great view from the mini balcony. The Hotel is very Central, one is in the middle of the action. Still, we heard absolutely no noise from the outside and were able to sleep very well. Also from the hotel and there is hardly a sound was heard happen. Breakfast also OK, good selection. The dining room is so beautiful. Staff was very friendly. We had a good time here.

Beautiful hotel, the rooms are very comfortable, the staff is great and always there to help you. We have absolutely nothing to complain about this place. When we booked the room we asked for a room with a nice view and they delivered it, we loved our stay there.

Very good location. The girl in the reception very nice. The rooms large and extremely clean. Beautiful views of the river.

Stayed there for 7 weeks on business trip. Amazing hotel which really cares about their guests. Any request or problem was handled immediately by very nice staff and they made sure to compensate any possible discomfort like ongoing roadworks by offering free breakfast or a bottle of vine. Rooms are bit smaller, but very nice and clean and equipped with everything you may need. Location of the hotel is perfect. Just a few steps away from plenty of bars and resteurants where you always find a place to relax after busy day in the office. I can only recommend this amazing place.

Extraordinary location, attentiveness of all the staff, Wi-Fi and space of the room.

Perfect choice! Great room with a balcony on the canal. Loved the area, convenient to all transportation, But, the best was the staff! Concierge David was personable and very helpful… even before we arrived via email. Everyone from the front desk to room service were pleasant and efficient We highly recommend this hotel!

Clean and tidy, friendly staff.

Decent rooms, very well equipped (even an iron and Ironing Board). Friendly staff and good Service. The Breakfast buffet is at an extra cost, is worth it. Only in the corridor there was a smell of marijuana, but moved neither into the room, still tragic. (Stop In Amsterdam…)

The Hotel is ok, some a little the worse for wear, rooms large, food could be better. It is loud. Although you can close the window, but my A/C just wanted to heat up; perhaps none at all. The dining room is beautiful.

This Hotel is currently it takes next to a construction site until 2018. It is working 24/7. Not being able to sleep, I and my partner at all. On the answer not on the website is said why to me, the nice staff that makes it not a Hotel in the area. Great.

The quasi four-star hotel meets the price criteria are satisfied.

This is a very nice and beautiful hotel, with very friendly and helpful staff and beautiful art deco throughout the hotel. It has a good restaurant Cafe Americain, and a nice bar/lounge which has an outside covered area. In the summer I can only guess is opened and beautiful. You can sit and enjoy a coffee, tea or drink. It has a beautiful square/plaza in the front with a water fountain, just lovely. My room was located in the back of the hotel, which I didn't find to be so much of a problem until the New Year Eve night when an unknown man knocked on my door. The man demanded I opened the door because he needed a pen to write. I reported the incident to the main desk and they indicated that they would look into it. The hallway to the room was was a long, deep hallway with some steps to go up in between, after this incident, I thought the room location was not a good destination for two ladies traveling alone. (room 12). However, I must say it was a very clean room, with very nice and modern furniture. The Room was a little small and dark — need better lighting. However must also say it was average size compared to a hotel room in NYC or Paris. We only went there at night to shower and sleep, so it wasn't so bad for us. The bed was comfortable and that was all we needed. We were given bathrobes, slippers, toiletries and a small bottle of champagne as a welcome gift. They made us feel welcomed and comfortable! I think they could do better with the lighting in the room.

Excellent Hotel! Large rooms! Staff at the highest level! A Small "But" Inconvenient to lift the grounds on the stairs. Basically everything in the best possible way.

Truly enjoyed my stay here when we visited Amsterdam. Such great accommodations and a very friendly staff. The service was very attentive and provided us with a wonderful welcoming feeling. Our room had a balcony that we could sit outside and watch the city come to life. Very clean and very nice for the price. Would definitely suggest this place to anyone visiting Amsterdam and is in the market for a great hotel.

Overall not bad but room.

After considering over thirty options for our wedding reception, our eye fell on the dining hall of Café Americain. The people at café Americain completely fulfilled our wishes. We were blown away by their outstanding catering, professional service, attentiveness and flexibility to meet our wishes. And above all we could not have hoped for a more beautiful setting than the café. Note that we also had a dinner and party at other locations, where we did not have the same experience. And most importantly: In contrast to other 'outstanding' locations such as Amstel hotel and Stadsherstel locations, they are not inapropriately overpriced — on the contrary. We hope other couples have the opportunity to have such a beautiful wedding reception such as ours at this location. 10 out of 10. R and G.

We stayed at this hotel for two nights, when we got to our room, it was ok but no view, so I called the front desk and ask them if they can accommodate us, they said for an extra $150 so I said I just want to change the room to see some day light they said no, well I said to my wife, its ok, but when we went to check out they told me I owe them for a phone call made from my room, I said we did not make the call, the girl actually then called the people to see if I was lying after 20 minutes of argument they finally waived the call, they are so money hungry and not at all accommodating, if I were you there are many other hotels around with nicer staff. Or perhaps the manager and two office girls should just take some customer service lessons.
