Reviews of The Oliver St. John Gogarty
Absolutely disgraceful the carry on in there tonight. Should not have been allowed. Pure greed.
Great venue, great service.
Great local music, good beer and clean rooms.
Wonderful place, good music and great atmosphere will be back there!
Fantastic bar and a great atmosphere however we had items stolen from our bags whilst within here.
Staff and bouncers seem to turn a blind eye to certain clientele frequenting here.
It was blatantly obvious the next night who was responsible and we watched them make attempts on other patrons property.
There is CCTV within and the Garda are aware that it’s an issue.
Have a cracking night and enjoy the music but please, please, please watch your belongings!
Great atmosphere, will be back to sample the food.
Good friendly service traditional Irish music reasonable price food and good quality.
Fun, fun, fun. Great staff!
Great experience, extremely nice atmosphere, nice and pleasing staff aaaannd GOOOD MUSIC.
Great breakfast. Beautiful authentic pub.
Great atmosphere but unfortunately a huge ripoff. €7.90 for a pint of Bulmers is ridiculous!
Great live music, friendly atmosphere ☘
Excellent food, service & drinks! Would definitely recommend and return to this place! Good job to the Manager☘️
Witnessed upstairs some amazing singing and music playing. We were looking for some real traditional music to witness while on holidays and u guys made us feel so comfortable and a fantastic enjoyable experience. We brought a CD and cannot stop playing it, I hope we had something similar in Australia but we unfortunately don’t. When we return we will c u again.
Musicians were a hoot. Muscle special was very tasty. Braised beef short ribs was excellent Atmosphere was terrific.
Fantastic atmosphere, traditional musqiue and very cosmopolitan clientele! The perfect place to have a delicious time and party!
Been here a couple of times and dined upstairs once. Absolutely superb place. Incredible atmosphere all day everyday.
My boyfriend and I saw the menu and just had to stop in for lunch. We couldn’t make our minds up on what to eat, we ended up ordering a starter each and three mains to share (such pigs) but my word it was worth the food coma. Can’t wait to visit here again sometime in the future.
Just to say my sisters and myself had a fantastic time on Tuesday night the 18th September until my poor attempt at Irish dancing resulted in me breaking my wrist. I would just like to say a big thank you to the doorman on duty that night for his first aid treatment and arranging for an ambulance. No more Irish dancing for me.
Mediocre dorms with only one bathroom and two plugs, the kitchen is terrible, moldy cutting board, no knifes, old unusable kitchenware. Living room dark and humid because of missing ventilation.
The comfort of the room leaves to be desired only two sockets for a room of ten people, unable to access the lockers under the beds when someone is lying is on this one. Prices very accessible. Nevertheless very well placed in the heart of Dublin, good insulation we did not hear the music of the adjacent pubs.
Great atmosphere, friendly staff.
I loved this place — to stay in an iconic Dublin tourist attraction in the heart of the city is something to do. The dorms are clean and have a bathroom in them — nice for those of us who have to pipi in the middle of the night after too many pints. For those who wish to forego the melodic tones of snorers, late arrivers and early risers, private rooms are available too. The staff is very helpful and the communal breakfast (included) is very nice to share. Near the pubs and shops with a car park right beside it — very convenient.
The food is ridiculously good and the atmosphere is what we expected Ireland to be!
Nice bar with live music and plenty of drinks to choose from. Waiters and servers were very nice and funny. It was pretty crowded and a bit loud for us with all of the people and the music. So if you're into that it's a very happening popular bar. We tend to like a more mid level volume, but other than that it's great.
Staff was very friendly and the food was great! Great place to stop in for a quick bite and a pint!
Excellent location, easy access, 24 hour car park just around the corner with discount for hostel guests (tho there's minimum parking length to avail of it). Room was clean and reasonably spacious. Underneath beds metal cages to store valuables (would fit big suitcase), need lock which could be bought at reception. 24 hour access to kitchen area, 24 hour complimentary coffee (from thermos) and tea. Also was mentioned complimentary soup, didn't check that out, but there was mushroom soup available during breakfast. Towels can be rented, but we did had 2 in the bathroom. You MUST have ID, only passport, drivers licence or national id card will be accepted. Even if you are Irish! If you manage to get the room in this place, take it!
Great food drinks and music.
Very well placed hotel in Temple Bar and close to the various tourist sites. Via buses for tourists in particular. The staff are very friendly.
On the other hand, the rooms with 10 beds is good if you want to get drunk and go nearby. Between people snoring, farting all night and the window overlooking the courtyard of the bar that remains stuck between-open to let air pass (and especially the noise until 2:00 a. M. ). It's a little average. Even with earplugs (indispensable).
Maybe the fours are quieter?! The windows seem to be closing.
The Pub part is nicer.
It's in the center of Temple Bar. Very good location It's not very quiet. Very good Food.
Great music and happy friendly people. Love it! Food is surprisingly good.
Absolutely brilliant evening both last night and tonight. Music and atmosphere on first floor were amazing.
Appreciate the musicians perform vey regularly but felt like it was a unique performance.
When a stag do came in and started getting silly they were calmly but deliberately removed.
Shall remember the evening for the rest of my life which I hope will be lengthy,
Great atmosphere with music every night. Very good quality food at very reasonable prices. I highly recommend it.
Compleat rip off… there is so much in Dublin. Stay away from this place it's not real Dublin. You don't need it. And the next 4 pubs down the old dub direction in temple bar. Just Rip Off in capitals. Enjoy everywere else. :)
Our room was clean with the usual hostel amenities in good order (bedding was clean and comfortable, shower was hot, door locked, Wi-Fi was free). Staff were polite. We arrived in Dublin too early to check-in, and they were able to hold our bags while we explored the city. The location is perfect, but Gogarthy's is in Temple Bar, a neighborhood dense with pubs and revelry until the wee hours. If you want a quiet place to sleep before 2am, you'll want to look elsewhere.
I was there on Monday. The atmosphere was great, but a pint was crazy expensive (€7.80 which is about $13.00 CDN). I had the seafood chowder and it was very good! The music was awesome! Without the music, I wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much!
Ideale during St Patrick's day. Typical place. Parking/bar/breakfast.
Excellence in all this splendor home room bedding space shower comfort small break first delicious 10/10
Don't go to this place. For 8 quid a pint of Guinness they don't even have toilet paper in the bathroom, also they put people asking for money for a cleaning service while they should be paying them a salary and offering to their clients a clean bathroom, with all the amenities.
Nice Atmosphere, great music. Also Suitable for going there with The kids.
Very good location and the staff is also good.
If you want a fantastic night, great music and amazing atmosphere then this is the place for you. If you don’t want to pay high prices for drinks then don’t visit. At the end of the day you get what you pay for. Every time I have visited I have had a fantastic night and I don’t mind paying extra for that.
Great atmosphere! Fast service. Must visit pub.
Pub with live music and correct staff. Great variety of beers, seafood and fish very acceptable to accompany.
Hostel in the heart of Temple Bar, clean and large rooms, with independent heating, work desk and large wall cupboard. Also the common rooms are quite clean. Breakfast buffet with toast, jam, Nutella, butter and cereals. We could leave the luggage even after checkout. Recommended!
I had a bad experience in my stay as I was robbed and it was hostel staff! I do not recommend the cameras do not work and do nothing to take care of you as a guest!
Right in the heart of Temple Bar area, with live music every day and a great pub downstairs. It's a hostel not a hotel folks. We had clean beds, warm water and a reasonably quiet nights sleep.
Fantastic location… Nice clean hostel… Comfy clean beds… Would definitely stay again.
The only good thing about this hostel is the location. Otherwise a nightmare. Room small, cramped and above all very dirty. The window could not be opened and looked to all abundance in the smoking area of the pub the bathroom was a disaster… Rust on the metal hoses, shower was more than dirty… disgusting… Hot water treatment system difficult to regulate…
Breakfast unloved, lady who cared for the so-called buffet testily and seemingly annoyed… here the price-performance ratio does not fit at all €55 per person and night… At this price I stayed at the Ibis in Hamburg…
Hotel SiMpA in the Temple Bar.
One of my favourite places to have a pint! There is always a good atmosphere where you can hear live music almost all the time!
Good value for the price.
+ WLAN + Breakfast + access to the roof — outlets — number of toilets.
Went to the restaurant and wanted to sit and eat in a quiet corner, as live music was in the bar. 10min after we ordered another live band started in the restaurant. The music was then of course unbearably noisy, that one could no longer talk or order the waiter.
The manager has not responded to multiple complaints about too loud music, but still confirms that everything fits.
The waitresses had passed the complaints and were obviously intimidated by the manager.
Regardless, an employee has howled.
The beer was good and adequate for the tourist area however not exactly favorable. The food was delicious, the mashed potatoes were a little dry and with something to salt definitely delicious.
Conclusion: Never again!
Typical hostel, room overall ok (depends of course very much on the other guests in the room) breakfast was free of charge, moderate selection.
Live music. Spectacular Pub with lots of atmosphere.
Expensive for rabbit cages. 50 Euros per night for bunk beds with the cupboard of metal cages on the ground. You dreamed of a typical English breakfast it's missed. You will have the right only to a few coffee toast jam cereal and… basta. Brief for a weekend in Dublin the 50 euros can be invested elsewhere.
I can be positive about two things: price and location. It's very affordable and within 2 steps you are in the pub. There are nice pubs around and also the walk to the other areas is not bad because of the central location of the hostel. But… The beds are horrible, you can feel the springs through the matrass. After one night we asked for extra blankets at the reception (to soften the matrass a bit when you lay on them) but appearantly you can only ask the cleaning ladies when they are there because other staff doesn't have access to that. The hostel is also quite noisy. The breakfast is poor, please don't consider this as an option except if you like crackers with jam. These options seemed ok because it was prepacked. The all day coffee, tea and soup. They just don't take it away after breakfast and it's there all day. For the tea it's ok because it's just hot water. The rest, don't even try.
Very good location The staff were friendly and helpful.
The rooms are small, windows are not closing properly and the noise from the street is very present and that is a problem when you want to sleep. In the bathroom is a very noisy fan that blows cold air, imagine making a shower with that thing on, also the bathroom is very outdated. We had a room of 4 persons but only 2 towels, at the reception they told us to get used to it, because this is the policy of the hostel. Except all above the location is perfect near the Temple Bar area and the bed sheets are clean.
Perfect location, services a little less since I was on the 4th floor and the elevator is faulty, the beverage distributor failed, cleaning 3, 5 in short if you are not fussy it is also worth just for the location.
My absolute favorite pub in Dublin!
The store looks great, the mood and music is really fantastic. Prices are normal Dublin conditions.
Nice. A little expensive. Irish Music.
LOVED this iconic place. We enjoyed a Guinness and live music and even interacted with the musicians who were playing. Very fun and friendly atmosphere. A must see in Dublin!
Very good service The only thing in a ten bed room only cleaned the bathroom once on the fourth day… That would be the only thing better. The atmosphere Great. Sure, amazing breakfast and complimentary soup, I've had a great day. I'Ll Come Back without hesitation.
Small friendly hotel where you can stay in the center of Dublin for not too expensive. It is located just above a fairly well-known bar, which leads to more noise. However I did not have a problem to fall asleep. You can also have a European breakfast.
Loved my stay here! Good price, great location! Breakfast was average. Rooms were large and pretty standard as far as hostels go. Location was great — — near all the touristy bars but walking distance to other local bars — definitely worth going away from temple bar.
We had dinner, saying that everything was great and little.
Hotel with pub in the center of Dublin, furnished in perfect Irish style. It offers live Irish folk music shows. Food quality and average prices, I did not stay in the hostel.
Stayed at this hostel twice, and both times I was not disappointed. Perfect location for the nightlife, and easy to get to any point of the city centre from here.
I spent 21 days here in August 2017. In room 37. With 10 beds. I was able to meet people from other countries an learn about how thing are. The breakfast was filling. Yes, it is in the heart of Temple Bar area. You are within minutes of walking to places to eat, drink, shopping an you can catch a bus down at the corner. You can take a bus from the Airport to Dublin central. The bus stop is only 3 blocks from the hostel. I will stay here again on my next visit to Dublin Ireland.
It'd be better place, as it's located at the heart of temple bar. The staff doesn't treat equally all his guests. As this is an Italian managed, or owned, they give preferences to their nationals. I don't recommend it for Black skin.
I loved this hostel. It is just a block from Temple Bar and in the middle of all the action in Dublin. The food and fun at the pub and restaurant is great craic.
Waited way too long for the food, which was not worth it anyway. It wasn't tasty at all-like from a cheap canteen, or worse. We asked if the meal for our little girl was spicy, we were told no. However when we got the meal, it was a bit spicy and the sausages tasted horrible. We also did not get the potatoes to steak and after asking twice we got it at the end of the food. We thank for them as it was too late but still had to pay for it. We left the place still hungry and less 70e. The only one good thing to say about the place is live irish music.
Great location in the middle of Temple bar but avoid if you are looking for quiet. We took a room by four with bathroom, the accommodation is decent, and the bunk beds comfy, but the room is micro. Would be to cure the fixtures and improve the cleanliness. Breakfast normal, but plentiful.
5 stars for location, 5 stars for staff politeness, 2 stars for the room! : (Needs some improvement, eg the windows that are really old, or the room decoration and the beds.
I thought its great place and great crack. Its a mixture of old and new entertainment. The staff are very wellcomeing. Highley recomed.
The hostel is located in the center of Rajonchika Temple Bar. There's a lot of pubs with live music. The hostel is relatively clean. Good breakfast. Coffee, tea, soup in unlimited numbers. Good Wi-Fi. Only one moment upset-it's all 2-3 outlets in the room for the entire crowd, and it's also very slow to reunite the devices.
You get what you pay for. Not bad of a place to stay for a night if you are on a budget. The breakfast spread was really really good for a backpackers place though!
The rooms are clean and the housekeeping and well done at each departure. SOAP, toilet paper and towels are renewed on occasion. A small kitchen is available free of charge from 9 am to 9 pm with tea and coffee at will. This hostel offers free breakfasts with Nutella! The people at the front desk are very welcoming. A small rest room is open during the day. Anyway, I recommend this hostel!
A great pub with live music. Very well attended and with a curious exterior decoration.
"Mussels oysters and guinness"
So touristy but cheerful. Live music and engaging. Great mussels and fresh oysters. Of course if the restaurant is crowded better stay away. The number of oysters served is misleading are half oysters … Normal price, service a little slow.
Live music every night. Music was good, unfortunately rather a tourist Pub. The weekend very full, with locals. That fits! During the week just tourists.
Racists. We were 10 people from France and only one of us just could not enter the 14th of may at 22pm because he looks arabic. We were not drunk. It was the only reason. An Irish taxi driver confirmed later that unfortunately there is still some Irish peolple thinking like that. Shame one Oliver St John Gogarty's Bar.
I only give this one star because I have to. The "clean" sheets had other peoples hair on them. Staff allowed an extremely suspicious & much older local man who was traveling alone & kept lying to us about where he was from stay in our room (which was otherwise only girls in their very early 20s). Why does a man from Dublin need to stay in a hostle there by himself if he isn't there to be a problem? The room itself was filthy, with dust & dirt caked along the floor moldings & stank of cigarettes because it over looked their bars smoking gallery.
Never ever go back to this place. Staffs is so rude. Exspecially the man who work in the restaurant. I been given two chances to them, unfortunately the result came out is worst then before. Gave losing freshness seafood. Never apologise with their mistake.
We went there to listen music and enjoy one of temple bars. The place is very lovely, but staff (particularly the girl who served us) are slow and rude. She calculated wrong our bill and brought not enough change and even we showed her mistake she did not change it and not apologised.
Very nice with great music on weekends but often even on weekdays, good beer. As the hostel is perfect because very central.
Excellent Irish pub! The lasagna is the best thing in the world.
Tourist alert — this place is a total tourist trap and they don't pretend to be otherwise. And yet, I simply loved it. Spread out over multiple floors, this combination hostel, bar, lounge, music venue, and fine dining restaurant, has something for everyone. Our meal in the fine dining area was truly excellent and reasonably priced. Service may have been a bit brusque but it was efficient, and we were able to descend immediately afterwards down one floor to their music area for some terrific trad music shows.
Food totally terrible. Drink OK. Waited 1 hour after ordering food and was cold and seemed like it was reheated. Tourists please stay away. Total dive. Never again. I am from Dublin and this place is a disgrace.
— music was O. K.
Food in the area bar food actually catastrophic, Seafood Platter an imposition for the price, the chowder was tasteful as far as I. O. The beer, but a bit overpriced, the tables smeared, the service rather uninterested conclusion: I was glad to have ordered the cheap chowder and not to have eaten expensive at the top of the restaurant. There wasn't much capput there then. The Seafood Platter consisted of an indefinable clump of mayonesseam with parts and considered with a salmon slice. An imposition for €16 —. I would have let it go back. Other guests also chocked listlessly in the food. For me the worst food during the 12 days!
Lots of places to choose from in the Temple Bar area of Dublin, but we were drawn in by the sound of live music emanating from this place. The music was entertaining and the food was scrumptious, but not too fancy. Just plane good pub food with friendly service. The place was packed. I had the Irish stew which was delicious nut they had an extensive seafood menu that, had I had another occasion to return would have tried in heartbeat.
Great Irish music, food, beer and atmosphere. Didn't stay here so can't comment but for an evenings entertainment it's brilliant.
Fun live music and good food. Prices very reasonable. Service was fast and friendly.
Had dinner in the restaurant on the top floor. The best way I would describe this experience would be "this place has seen better days". While the food wasn't terrible, it was very standard for the price we paid.

RespondOverpriced pub in an overpriced neighborhood. If you can avoid this tourist trap, you'll be better off.
04/02/2015
RespondNo words to describe how great this place is! Pub, staff and the Irish people are the best! :).
Worst key system I've ever seen in hostels. Just one key for the entire bedroom. You have to knock the door even it's 3am and bother your roommates. The kitchen is not full and you can only use until 7pm. Too loud at nights because the night club is by the corner. Expensive fot the bad services they offered.
My husband and I just couldn't resist having one more drink on our last night in Ireland, so we stopped into this pub. The atmosphere was great, and there was some really fun live music while we were there. The drinks were delicious, and we had a great time on our last night closing out our time in Ireland.
Great Music, Good Food, Amazing Guiness. Renata our Brasilian waitress help us to enjoy the evening.
Spectacular Irish pub where you can spend hours and hours. Live traditional music. Many beers to choose and a great menu to be able to taste meat and fish. To recommend whiskey soup and veal t-bone steak.
Hostel in the Centre of Ireland. We share the room with other 7 more, all people of different nationalities. The beds have cages where to leave your stuff, if you take perfect padlock. It's cheap, and is open throughout the day. The tavern offers live music and gives lunch and dinner. Pretty good for being a hostel.
No irish staff, well I didnt see any, very very very over priced, music was good, didnt eat here as it was double the normal prices for dublin.
Great music! have been there for more than 6-7 time in diferent times, always good drinks, great music and irish food. :-).
Nice pub with lots of live music. For dinner, I can say nothing because I was mainly to drink there.

Fabulous atmosphere, music playing all day and night plus delicious food in the restaurant upstairs. My favourite bar in the world!
