I had a wonderful 3 days stay in this beautiful historical charm feels like stepping back in time. The colonial architecture is stunning, combined with modern comfort.
The atmosphere is calm and elegant, the room was spacious, clean, and very comfortable.
The staff were friendly and helpful, always assist with a smile and “dengan senang hati”
(Ibu Maria, Sherly and Tiara from FO, Fatwa, Rosa, Ami and Reza).
The Rawon is a must to try for the breakfast and their Gelato in the cafe is sooo good.
The location is also convenient, close to the city center but still quiet. Walk distance with cafes and restaurants.

Shalimar Hotel offers a romantic and luxurious atmosphere with interiors that are truly pleasing to the eye. The room was quiet and comfortable, making it easy to relax and unwind. The only small downside was the hot shower, as the water temperature was a bit inconsistent—either too hot or too cold—so the adjustment could use some improvement. Overall, it was a lovely stay.

The Shalimar is an excellent boutique heritage hotel. The staff are terrific: from Mbak Tiara on the front desk to Ibu Maria in De Hemel restaurant. The breakfasts are amazing, the location is peaceful and, just, a short drive from the state universities. Malang is a fabulous town, so ask for an external facing room. Also, this hotel has a terrific history: from Masonic Lodge to station of Radio Republik Indonesia.

We were very impressed with this hotel. It is a beautiful property and the upkeep of the place, the rooms and common areas was excellent. The pool was cool too. The rooms had small balconies for those who may want fresh air or feel claustrophobic in closed areas. The amenities are really good too. If this has impressed you already, then you are in for a bonus because their food and bar is top notch! The food at the Italian restaurant Le Regina is comparable to any great restaurant in a big city. The drinks at the bar were amazing — we tried several and would highly recommend the Strudel, Calgary Bay and the Desert Rose. The spa was also great as the masseuse there is very experienced (over 30 years of experience). You will not regret this place. There are several nice restaurants nearby too.

Breakfast was good and perfectly fine, with a reasonable selection, though not exceptional 🍳☕. What truly stood out was the service: the staff were consistently friendly, attentive, and very fast to respond. When we had an issue with the hot water late at night around midnight, I called the reception and someone was sent immediately to fix it, which was very impressive and highly appreciated 🌙🔧.
There were a few small details that could be improved. The bed had some minor stains and a few hairs from a previous guest, which is not ideal, but still something that can be overlooked given the overall experience 🛏️. Thanks to the excellent service and professional handling of issues, the stay was enjoyable and comfortable. Overall, a good hotel with very strong service standards — thank you for the stay.

I stayed here for a family vacation, I stayed here for a family vacation such an awesome hotel in the city center. It has a classic vibes with beautiful Dutch-style touches. Perfect for those who love aesthetic classic decor and cool paintings about Malang. Super historic, and the staff are really friendly especially Sherly at the reception.

The room was super comfortable. It would be even better if the TV channels were more up-to-date or switched to a smart TV.

Our company held a meeting in De Tjakra hall, their largest meeting room. The room was spacious with high ceilings. Downside was only the light as it was a bit dim for business meeting. The services were good, adequate staff to cater the guests, snacks portion were great! Banquet/marketing staff very kind and accommodating.

This was a return trip in less than 6 months. As usual it was relaxing and always nice to be back. Breakfast was excellent. Shout out to the breakfast staff who were always eager to recommend and explain all the various Indonesian cuisine. We will definitely return again.

Our stay at Shalimar has been great. The hospitality has been beyond expectations. Our luggage got lost between flight connection. That's when Lukman, a generous personel, stepped in to arrange pick up and transfer from SUB airport. Lukman arranged everything we needed from airport transfers to mount bromo visit by involving his network of agencies and connection. Sherly at the lobby made sure our stay was smooth and joyful. People here smile and greet you everyday. Learn some Indonesian like Selamat pagi or terima kasih, people really appreciate that. We couldn't be any happier. Thank you Shalimar boutique. We loved this hotel. The staff were so friendly and helpful — advising us on places to visit in Malang, helping us book train tickets etc. Our room was beautiful and really smart.
The breakfast was delicious and staff were very attentive. We ate twice in the Italian restaurant which isn't something we would normally do but it was a lovely setting (with live music one evening).

A fantastic respite in keeping with the charm of Malang, The Shalimar is a heritage boutique hotel, with great facilities, pool, photography and furnishings. Two excellent restaurants snd maybe the best wine cellar in East Java? The staff bend over backwards in responding to any request. They helped me arrange a day trip to the Bromo area national park for hiking. Really pleasant stay.

We requested a quiet room before arrival. Management replied they could not guarantee this, but we arrived at the earliest check-in time to improve our chances. Unfortunately, the room offered was on a corridor with a window facing the hallway. At check-in, both a room change and a refund were refused.
The next morning, we were shown other rooms and agreed to have our luggage moved during the day. However, upon returning, we were given completely different rooms—located near a noisy street and a wine bar. The manager denied both the availability of the promised rooms and our original ones. He also claimed the hotel was fully booked, though rooms were clearly still available.
After a second sleepless night, we decided to move to another hotel. Overall, our requests were handled in a misleading and inconsistent manner—whether through incompetence or disregard. In over 10 years of frequent travel, we have never had such an unsatisfactory experience.
Practical notes for future guests:
• The quietest rooms are 213–216 and 221–222 (as well as 313–316 and 321–322 one floor higher). These face a concrete wall—not a pretty view, but they are quieter.
• Other rooms face the street, where there is constant background noise.
• Corridor-facing rooms are the worst option, as they offer no privacy and feel unsuitable to rent out at all.
• Room changes are common requests here, so be prepared to rely on luck.

The customer response level of the employees of this hotel is very poor.
I ordered pizza, but even after an hour, I didn't arrive at the cafe on the first floor, so I ate the cold pizza in the my room.
It's like the only narcissistic hotel in the world that doesn't provide customers with information about food when it comes out very late. And, a female waiter at the cafe brought a card machine to pay by 10 p. M. And an internal call came to the hotel saying that the payment should be made at the hotel counter.

They only make excuses and do not listen to customers.
The shower facilities are also too old, so I was surprised, and the carpet smells like rotten smell.
It's the worst hotel I've ever wanted to come back to.
Even if it's a Boutique hotel.
Not all hotels are good.
I never recommend this hotel.

Overall the hotel has nice facilities. We especially loved the speakeasy (hidden in the Italian restaurant). The food at the two restaurants was also good and breakfast buffet had a variety of local and western options. The room was fine, nothing special, but of note the bathrooms could use some attention. The shower head / spray was harsh and quite uncomfortable to use. And though expected in this climate, the bathroom has some mold challenges that could be addressed. The staff were very nice and helpful and the location was lovely.
