The Shalimar Boutique Hotel

I stayed at Shalimar for 13 nights, and unfortunately, the overall experience was disappointing, mainly due to the lack of service quality.
From the moment I arrived, the first impression was already poor. There was no genuine greeting, no bellboy assistance, and the front office staff mostly remained seated instead of standing to welcome guests, which felt unprofessional.
Throughout my stay, only a few staff members showed initiative to greet guests. Most avoided eye contact, creating a disengaged and unwelcoming atmosphere.
Since our room is a non-smoking room, I used the restaurant area near the pool to smoke. However, finding an ashtray was unnecessarily difficult, and staff were rarely present or proactive. I had to actively look for assistance, which should not happen at this level.
On my fifth night, I encountered a gecko in the bathroom. I immediately contacted the front office, but there was no apology, only housekeeping sent to remove it. What’s worse, there was no follow-up afterward. This is a serious lapse, as it directly impacts guest comfort and safety. I felt uneasy using the bathroom for the rest of my stay.
There was also inconsistency in service. On one occasion, food delivery was brought directly to my room (even offered by the staff), but on subsequent nights, I was required to pick it up downstairs. This lack of consistency is confusing and reflects poor coordination.

I had a great stay at The Shalimar Boutique Hotel Malang. The service was excellent staff were friendly, helpful, and very professional throughout my stay. Special thanks to the receptionist, Tiara, who was very kind and helpful in assisting me.
The hotel itself is beautiful, with a charming classic design and a calm, relaxing atmosphere. It’s a perfect place to unwind.
The room was clean, spacious, and very comfortable, especially the bed. Overall, it was a pleasant experience and I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Malang.

Located at the center of Malang city, this Hotel already makes me fallin in loveee. The name of the hotel (Shalimar) so beautiful. Bukan hanya namanya yang indah, but it’s also truly heartwarming the second I’m arrived, because the greeting and the service of all the staff was so responsive and incredibly helpful. Especially when I want to check in, they make it ASAP and so informative. Suka. Hotel yang bersih dan kamar yang sangat nyaman, cocok untuk yang mau menginap saat liburan. Sangat puas dan bikin terkesan selama liburan di Malang. Highly recommend this hotel to everybody, and I would like to stay another night at this Shalimar Boutique Hotel again. Thank you.

We absolutely loved our stay at The Shalimar in Malang. It’s like stepping back in time, but with a modern, very comfortable twist. The room was beautiful and spacious — a good bed, a nice shower. The breakfast menu is very extensive — too much to try it all — and the staff is super, super friendly en helpful.
The icecream is wonderful and it is fun to see Dutch traditionals like tompouce, kroket, speculaas-cake, Gouda cheese… The restaurant is called “hemel” (Heaven) for us, our stay in Shalimar felt heavenly.

I had a wonderful 3 days stay in this beautiful historical charm feels like stepping back in time. The colonial architecture is stunning, combined with modern comfort.
The atmosphere is calm and elegant, the room was spacious, clean, and very comfortable.
The staff were friendly and helpful, always assist with a smile and “dengan senang hati”
(Ibu Maria, Sherly and Tiara from FO, Fatwa, Rosa, Ami and Reza).
The Rawon is a must to try for the breakfast and their Gelato in the cafe is sooo good.
The location is also convenient, close to the city center but still quiet. Walk distance with cafes and restaurants.

Shalimar Hotel offers a romantic and luxurious atmosphere with interiors that are truly pleasing to the eye. The room was quiet and comfortable, making it easy to relax and unwind. The only small downside was the hot shower, as the water temperature was a bit inconsistent—either too hot or too cold—so the adjustment could use some improvement. Overall, it was a lovely stay.

The Shalimar is an excellent boutique heritage hotel. The staff are terrific: from Mbak Tiara on the front desk to Ibu Maria in De Hemel restaurant. The breakfasts are amazing, the location is peaceful and, just, a short drive from the state universities. Malang is a fabulous town, so ask for an external facing room. Also, this hotel has a terrific history: from Masonic Lodge to station of Radio Republik Indonesia.

We were very impressed with this hotel. It is a beautiful property and the upkeep of the place, the rooms and common areas was excellent. The pool was cool too. The rooms had small balconies for those who may want fresh air or feel claustrophobic in closed areas. The amenities are really good too. If this has impressed you already, then you are in for a bonus because their food and bar is top notch! The food at the Italian restaurant Le Regina is comparable to any great restaurant in a big city. The drinks at the bar were amazing — we tried several and would highly recommend the Strudel, Calgary Bay and the Desert Rose. The spa was also great as the masseuse there is very experienced (over 30 years of experience). You will not regret this place. There are several nice restaurants nearby too.

Breakfast was good and perfectly fine, with a reasonable selection, though not exceptional 🍳☕. What truly stood out was the service: the staff were consistently friendly, attentive, and very fast to respond. When we had an issue with the hot water late at night around midnight, I called the reception and someone was sent immediately to fix it, which was very impressive and highly appreciated 🌙🔧.
There were a few small details that could be improved. The bed had some minor stains and a few hairs from a previous guest, which is not ideal, but still something that can be overlooked given the overall experience 🛏️. Thanks to the excellent service and professional handling of issues, the stay was enjoyable and comfortable. Overall, a good hotel with very strong service standards — thank you for the stay.

I stayed here for a family vacation, I stayed here for a family vacation such an awesome hotel in the city center. It has a classic vibes with beautiful Dutch-style touches. Perfect for those who love aesthetic classic decor and cool paintings about Malang. Super historic, and the staff are really friendly especially Sherly at the reception.

The room was super comfortable. It would be even better if the TV channels were more up-to-date or switched to a smart TV.

Our company held a meeting in De Tjakra hall, their largest meeting room. The room was spacious with high ceilings. Downside was only the light as it was a bit dim for business meeting. The services were good, adequate staff to cater the guests, snacks portion were great! Banquet/marketing staff very kind and accommodating.

This was a return trip in less than 6 months. As usual it was relaxing and always nice to be back. Breakfast was excellent. Shout out to the breakfast staff who were always eager to recommend and explain all the various Indonesian cuisine. We will definitely return again.

Our stay at Shalimar has been great. The hospitality has been beyond expectations. Our luggage got lost between flight connection. That's when Lukman, a generous personel, stepped in to arrange pick up and transfer from SUB airport. Lukman arranged everything we needed from airport transfers to mount bromo visit by involving his network of agencies and connection. Sherly at the lobby made sure our stay was smooth and joyful. People here smile and greet you everyday. Learn some Indonesian like Selamat pagi or terima kasih, people really appreciate that. We couldn't be any happier. Thank you Shalimar boutique. We loved this hotel. The staff were so friendly and helpful — advising us on places to visit in Malang, helping us book train tickets etc. Our room was beautiful and really smart.
The breakfast was delicious and staff were very attentive. We ate twice in the Italian restaurant which isn't something we would normally do but it was a lovely setting (with live music one evening).
