Lovely spacious clean bar with ample seating indoors and out, friendly bar staff… set in great location too. Well worth a visit.

We were worried about dining out, but we were put at ease as soon as we arrived. From all the safety measures they have in place, and very helpful friendly staff all in face shields. Food was delicious and very well priced. So perfect all round. Highly recommended.

Having visited The Sun last summer and not having the best time I was a little hesitant to return again. But a friend had booked an event here, so reluctantly I booked to stay.
Well The Sun hotel blew me away, easy parking, a quick check in, good wine and my room was beautiful. Ok it could do with a little TLC here and there, but The Sun isn’t a 5* hotel (after reading some of the other reviews I was worried, but it seems people are expecting a 10* hotel for a 3* price! )
The party was great and guests well looked after, Zoe and Deean were both very attentive.
Well done The Sun hotel, new management must be doing the trick! See you soon :)

I have just returned home from a wonderful stay at Sun Hotel. Upon arrival we were met by Zoe and Deen who were very helpful and welcoming. Our room was beautiful, warm and snuggly. We were surprised how quiet the room was, usually in hotels you can hear every word others are saying and movement, but it was so peaceful. The bed was super comfy we slept really well. The shower was really powerful, usually at hotels they are disappointing! We went downstairs for breakfast around 9.30am, Deen wished us a good morning and showed us to the restaurant, where we were kindly greeted by Olga. Breakfast arrived quickly and was absolutely gorgeous, I had Eggs Royale and my husband had the Full English breakfast. Thank you to Sun Hotel and staff for a brilliant stay, we will be recommending and will definitely be returning.

Bar Staff unhelpful a rude. Wine corked replaced from same bottle when complained asked for further payment?!

Terrible hotel — dirty, run down and serving awful breakfast — milk that had gone sour and to top it offered dirty glasses for our orange juice. Never again, totally disgusting place.

My husband visited for lunch today. Bought a drink, viewed the menu, went to order for himself and friend only to be told that meals were not being served today. Why were menu's on tables? Why were a large party of people already eating? When he complained all he got was "it's been noted". Very disappointing and not likely to go again.

Popped in for lunch and have to say the food was excellent and really good value. The steak special was really large and the lasagna was amazing. Would def pop in here if back this way again. Service was ok.

Worst bar service ever, when you have a sold out comedy night with at least 200 thirsty punters you would maybe open the top bar for the interval, have mire than one server on the one open bar and not run out of clean glasses! A chimp could run this place better.

Lovely meal great service, friendly staff made us feel very welcome. Nothing was to much trouble. We will most definitely return for an overnight stay.

I've been to public meetings in the large room upstairs. It's only accessible by stairs which is why I've only given it 3 stars. I haven't had a meal here or stayed the night here so are unable to comment on those facilities. The bar has a good range of drinks which aren't overpriced for the area. Its good if you are in a group where each person prefers a different type of drink.

Upon arrival the man on reception was rude and dismissive (guy with ponytail). No information was given as to where to locate our rooms, breakfast times etc. Upon arriving in our room it was a bit of an eye-opener. The hotel is very data and would probably take a massive investment to get it up to the required standard. All of the doors in the corridor were noisy. Back to the room-the bed was extremely comfortable. This was the hotels only redeeming feature. The shower screen has never been cleaned, there was mould in the shower and the wall to the side of the shower was crumbling. The head of the shower came off in my hand too. One of the drawers in the room had a foil wrap in the drawer. I didn't touch it so couldn't tell you what was inside. There's no air conditioning and the room needed vacuuming. We had breakfast in the restaurant area and there were not only ants on the floor (this was indoors by the way) there were even ants all over the table. I did have fresh towels everyday and the day staff were nice. The night staff are a total different breed though.

Very basic place but fine if that's all you need. Hotel is very old fashioned and the parking isn't adequate for the size of hotel. Ended up in the public car park but wasn't too expensive. Breakfast service was very slow and food wasn't up to much.

Your chef needs to learn the basics of cookery. You can’t serve a burnt and black lamb steak as blue and my steak was far more well done than rare. Very disappointing meal. Now sat outside surrounded by dirty glasses. You need to get your act together.

I had a late set up lunch appointment and we welcomed and made to feel very relaxed lunch as we had requested. The Menu was varied and interesting. Nothing was too much trouble. Our 3 Course lunch was well paced, well presented and most enjoyable. We had a longer pause than previously to savour what we had already eaten. An excellent experience!

The waiting staff were very welcoming when we arrived, friendly atmosphere, the food was outstanding, would highly recommend this place for a few drinks or a meal out.

Always come here for lunch when in Hitchin good food and reasonably priced scampi was really good chips were a bit cold. Lovely apple pie for pud!

Avoid room 17. Had stayed here for a business trip but never again. Room is very small and bathroom is full of black mould. The room is very dusty and covered in cobwebs nevermind the lack of light though the window and water damage in certain areas around the room. Also watch out where you park, I got a parking ticket because I hadn't been aware by the reception that there's certain times I can park the car in the car park without paying!

Stayed for one night, room was clean and warm but dated. Restaurant was ok, Breakfast was good. Parking an issue as I had to use public Car Park to the rear it was free after 6pm but if you overstayed (8am) you risked a hefty fine.

Good food awfull service if you have hungry children don't bother. The food took ages to arrive and wasn't what we ordered because the had run out of fish fingers but the didn't tell us until it arrived. There's much better places to eat in Hitchin. I don't normally write reviews but it was that bad.

We arrived and waited 30 minites to be served at the bar. Charged £85 for a room with no towels, a rusty shower and a urine stained toilet! Absolutely dispicable! We go to many hotels on a regular basis, this has to be the worst! The staff when asked basic questions they have no idea, whats room service internal call number as advertised? … unable to answer. Room is basic, ie. Tv channels 1-5 … get more at home! P. S … lucky to get a towel here! … shame on them!

Always a good meal at reasonable prices, always warm and the tables are not all jammed together.

I attended a gig that Hitchin Folk Club put on in the upstairs room at the Sun. It was an excellent show. Had a drink downstairs in the Sun before the show. Friendly place.

Hope you get a better welcome than we did tonight in the (Boxing Day) Walked into an empty bar to be asked "are you residents? " "We're only open for residents! " Despite lots of empty spaces in the hotel, now pay & display car park, however clearly not interested in their 52 weeks of the year regular trade. Having visited twice per week & eaten there every week during this year perhaps 2018 is the time to move on? Very very disappointing @oldenglishinns.

Well where do I start, arrived for a Christmas function on Friday evening with a party of friends there was a queue for the bar 20 deep as only 2 bar staff working. Sat down about 7.45 and at 8.15 our starter arrived. The pate had half a slice of cold toast with it, the soup was totally bland and the crayfish cocktail contained 5 prawns. Our Turkey msin course arrived on very hot plates which is great and was standard delivered in turkey however the potatoes were pre cooked — either burnt and shrivelled or pale and hard, there was 1 poor lady silver serving brussels and carrots (which were uncleaned and hard) by the time she got round to our table our turkey was cold. 1 ramakin of cranberry sauce for 12 people?
When we asked for more it was met with a statement off ' that will be a while coz im busy'
Nobody on our table ate the dessert as the cheesecake base was like sand and the top like tasteless glue, the brownie has a very odd texture and flavour and the christmas pud was hard and about the size of 2 matchstick boxes served on a plate with thin custard. The meal took 3 hours in total. At 10.45 we were asked to go back in the bar for the tables to be moved for the disco — the function ended at 12 so 1 hour dancing. We did go to see the manager who seemed pleasant enough but very much had a manner of not really caring although he did offer us 2 bottles of prosecco by was of compensation which we had to ask for twice. The manager then became 'unavailable'.

The worst xmas party I have been to. The food was diabolical … pate with 1 slice cold toast … main served and 1 person dishing veg so dinner went cold. 1 pot cranberry on table for 12 people … Desserts. Portion was small and very unappetising took 3 hours to serve dinner. The disco didnt start till 11pm and it was finishing at 12… Will not be returning again…

A lovely stay for a family wedding. The Sum is in a great location but the location is also the reason for a 4 star review. It's a little noisey on Friday, Saturday nights and parking at the hotel is a bit of a lottery when it's busy. The room was basic but very clean and had everything we needed. Lovely breakfast and the food at the wedding was also top drawer, the staff were also very helpful. We woould stay again if we are in the area.

Good selection of real ales. Reasonable Sunday roast. Folk club on Sunday evening.

Check the parking out. Says free parking. But isn't a very big car park. We had to go into town and park and walk back. Room lacked maintenance. But great location.

Hitchin folk club on Sunday nights. Great acts and reasonable prices for non members. Drinks at the bar downstairs are a bit pricey.

Quaint, historic, clean, friendly and quiet situated among the cobbled streets of this lovely old market town. The prices are very reasonable especially compared to London, I'd rather be here than 25 miles south in the noisy metropolis. The building its self is well appointed and characterful having been used as an Inn for hundreds of years.

Great place for food and great evening.

Lovely location off the centre of Hitchin. Great food and drinks served by extremely friendly and helpful staff! Could do with a little interior update, but all the important things were perfect.

Located in the town centre. Service was quick and friendly. An Olde English type of hotel, amenities are older but well maintained and clean with character. Only blemish was no A/C in the middle of a heat wave but that should not be unexpected for the type of establishment. Open windows provided a cool breeze in the evening while not being too noisy outside.

This is not the first time myself and my grandad have eaten here… but it will be our last!
Every time we've been the service has been poor and the meal ok. This Sunday they had 3 large parties in and no extra staff! One table I noted had their food brought out to them in dribs and drabs. Half the table had practically finished their meal before the others had started. Couple next to us. Actually went and brought crisps while they waited for their meal!
So 3 waitresses and one doubling up as barmaid for a pretty full eatery! Ridiculous.
So service was poor… beef was tough as old leather, my grandad could not eat even half! … and he has a good set of dentures I might add!
Seriously you want to run promotions, you want people to frequent your establishment… get more staff in! Smile!
I was not the only person to complain and as I said this is not an unusual occurance!

Have attended Folk Club there 4 times, and stayed overnight each time. Lovely old buildings in town centre. Rooms full of character, and beds are comfortable. All have en-suites. Full choices of hot and cold breakfasts included. Staff are always first class. Great food available.

Stayed as part of a birthday party at the function rooms next door. Nice cozy rooms with old wooden beams. Enough room for the travel cot we needed for our little one. Breakfast was nice too.

Lovely hotel, really great food. The staff are friendly and helpful and facilities good. We stayed in room 21 which over looked the courtyard… Lovely room with exposed beams. Clean and comfortable. Reasonable prices. The only things I could fault the place on: its the car park isn't particularly big so you may have to use one of the pay and display ones in the immediate area; the bedroom windows are lovely old single pane wooden ones which look great but you can hear everything that goes on outside — not great if you're a light sleeper. Over all, great place and I would go back again!

The place looks very "oldy worldy" and lovely from the outside. Front of house looks quite nice, leather armchairs, very charming. Then you check in. Was taken up very dark and dusty stairs, (I think they used 10 watt light bulbs) haven't been cleaned in years. I actually wrote my name in the thick dust on the way up. Then we were shown to our first room No. 53 or 51 (the family room) I think it was as you walk in you are hit instantly by the smell of damp. There were massive damp patches over the walls, and by the window. In fact the plaster was that damp it was squishy if you pushed your finger on it. Bathroom needed a good clean, fusty smelling and the rubber shower mat was black with mould. Not very healthy for children. I did indeed complain and asked to change rooms (that went down like a lead balloon with reception) ended up in two rooms. No damp this time, lighting oppressive, bathroom fan broken in one with no windows, mouldy shower mats. What a shame because the food isn't bad, and the breakfast was quite lovely too. Ended up moving to The Priory up the way, it was cheaper and way way way superior.

It's pretty crap, but cheap, if you can afford it, I would stay somewhere else, often the only reason I stay here is because all the other hotel is booked. The walls are very thin, can always hear people walking by, it overlooks a car park, the rooms are old and stuffy and the internet has a adult filter.

Overall the place needs an update, the service was slow and food not good. Will not be coming back. Avoid.

Very nice hotel! though dont stay in room no. 7 its haunted! they say somebody once hung themselves! ;-) v good.
