It's not the best neighborhood. Even on the 8th floor you can hear the yelling down on the street all night. The shower in my room leaked badly, I reported it the second day of my week stay, still broken at the end. As long as you don't go outside early or late day it feels safe.

Very well situated in San Francisco. You can easily recognize the hotel by the big tag draw in the wall. You can book a parking place, (for us it was 150$ for 4 days. The receptionist was very nice, ge upgraded us. The rooms are big and clean. We had just a small problem with the water in the bathroom which was or too cold or too hot. The view from our room was amazing!

Old but convenient. In the west the hotels don't have tea. Bring own…

I dont know who wrote these good reviews, probably people that are related to the hotel, but I have traveled in the shittiest places in the world but never stayed in a place like this. It's like taken from the movies. Showers like 1960s in the USSR Beds are like in India 2018 AND NO AIR CONDITIONING OR TV! you can not go out at night because full of homeless people out side, smell off urine, very dirty. PARKING COST EXTRA $30 on top of the $250 RIP off a night charge. Crazy crazy crazy place if you want to experience the real urban 1960s years. one star is way too much for this place.

First horrible night in a tiny room. We were able to change to a room worthy of the €200 at night.

Hotel located right next to market Street IE in the midst of dozens of homeless who lie in the streets.

Great location. Near to shopping district, tram and subway. Room is quite spacious. Overall experience is quite good. But the room wall is very thin (no sound proof at all) and rhe room doesn't has air conditioner.

Hotel room is clean, staff are friendly. But the scene in front of the door is not very pleasant, somewhat run down and dirty, as unfortunately all over San Francisco.

Not a bad stay. Good views, decent location. No thermostat/fans in the room though, so it can get a bit cold/warm on some nights. The water temperature fluctuates GREATLY in the shower, so be prepared to scoot out of the way when it goes from nice, to Satan licking your back, and down to Jack Frost nipping at your everything. Staff was excellent, very eager to please. Be mindful to lock your valuables in the safe, as well as any tobacco products… Had a little issue with having to pay $13 a pack after some if mine were "cleaned" in the room while I was away. The restaurant attached (Farmer Brown) is some of the best soul food in town, so don't miss it! All in all, the hotel was good. The minor negatives listed only pulled one star because the rest of the experience was fantastic. Great job, Hotel Metropolis! I'll be back!

The hotel is not bad, clean, small quaint rooms. Would be tough for long stays but over night it was perfect. The area around the hotel is a little rough but for the price and location, I would stay again.

The basic heating, but it's good, pretty central to the shops and market.

Amenities were minimal and room was small but well stocked with coffee and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Perfect place to stay during a conference.

Nice enough to be comfortable. But nothing fancy, noisy on the street front, and not much for furniture in the rooms. No dresser and limited plugins. Room was also VERY warm.

Very nice bar and restaurant. Was my first time there. Drink special $6 after sales tax, health fee And tip costs $8. Just be prepared.

Centrally located and the hotel itself is also well equipped and decorated in a very modern style. Really good value for money. However, in the immediate vicinity is a homeless centre which leads to the fact that one feels especially as a woman, in the evening not safe and also in the day a lot of drunks or drug addicts sneaking around.

Good hotel, however do not give breakfast, considered that for the price should give at least a basic American breakfast, the area is a bit dangerous as there is much but much homeless and in the long run is a bit unwelcome, otherwise both as cleanliness and service is all Ok.

Rooms are older but still nice and clean. Staff was nice. Billing is very confusing. My $152.99 a night rate became $281.49 total because of taxes, parking, parking tax and something called an Urban Fee (typical San Francisco). The area is horrible. Do not walk at night. Hold your nose anytime outside.

Good location at reasonable price if you have activities in the. Convention Center.

Great central location near all kinds of shopping and about 3 blocks from the black cat jazz club. 20 minute walk to china town. This hotel is old. Some may like that, others may not. The hotel room's appointments were sparse but not rundown. The hotel fairly clean, but looked as though it was well used. Bed was comfortable (for me) but about what you'd expect. Overall, perhaps not the finest of experiences, but you could do a lot worse in San Francesco.

To stay and rest it is definitely enough the bathroom is nice. In December, it will be a bit cool at night, therefore, turn on heating and take a long pajamas. I would give three and a half stars.

Used to love this place. A gem surrounded by homeless squaller. The Asian lady night shift treated me like one of them because the local address on my id and ruined my opinion of it now f… that place.

Convenient for a visit a couple of days.

Everyone who works here has been very nice. I needed special accommodations and they were able to help me right away. The building is older but is and charming. The company that owns it is very environmentally friendly and has reminders up of ways we can all help.

Walls are not soundproof. Decent hotel. Not too fancy. Has what you need for a quick and basic travel.

Mid-range Hotel with correct but poorly soundproofed rooms and no air conditioning. No fridge as advertised. Good cleanliness of the room.
The worst is the neighborhood with hordes of homeless and junkies that gives a feeling of insecurity especially with children. Not to recommend to families.

Small rooms, but decent. The worst part is that directly across the street is a terrible part of town. Makes you feel very unsafe.

The room is pretty good, a bit basic but clean and comfortable with a daceng shower. The staff are lovely — helpful and professional. The only down side is the location. While it is close to union square it is also in the tenderloin. We have been informed by several people we have met that the tenderloin is a dangerous area. Multiple times we have been told to be careful. It's a well known troublesome area. The area feels very menacing and run down with a large amounts of homeless people, loitering groups and sirens It is a shame as the hotel and staff are nice but I would definitely not stay here again as I just don't feel safe and have to get taxis in and out.

I just got back from San Francisco where I stayed for 3 nights at this hotel.
Staff very welcoming and attentive to these guests.
Clean Hotel
Room can be a little small but clean, lack of storage especially in the bathroom.
On the other hand, the district mal-notorious: drugged, homeless in front of the hotel and parking the streets are halls, I admit that I was not comfortable getting out of the hotel, especially at night. I even saw a homeless man urinating in a public dumpster.
I would not recommend this hotel to the family with children.

The location is a bit difficult but the city centre and all the public transport pictures are easily accessible.
Parking lot with $30 a day expensive but probably normal in San Francisco.

The Hotel is a very nice place to stay.

The location is close to Union Square. Some tourist attractions such as Chinatown are within a reasonable walking distance. Beware that the Tenderloin district is nearby, and that the routes you take while walking should be planned to avoid areas with an active drug trade. The room is nice, and the hotel has workout facilities. However, the room is far from soundproof. I can hear conversations in the hallway, and the noises from the traffic on the street (my room is on the 8th floor). Not recommended if you are a light sleeper. Otherwise, I am happy with the hotel.

Definitely not my favorite hotel. Rooms were small and poorly lit. The hallways/stairways were very dirty which made me distrust the cleanliness of the room (although I didn't see anything major inside the room). There is literally no noise insulation. We could clearly hear people's conversations outside from our second floor room. Beds were very firm which I don't personally care for. All and all really disliked the one night we stayed here.

Room overlooking the street, at 8th. Despite this, no special disturbances due to noise. The hotel is quiet, we slept well. Too bad there is no breakfast. Expect more than $30 parking at night, it hurts.
On the other hand the neighborhood is infrequent. Lots of homeless, it stinks, it's horrible. It is not confined to the street of the hotel, but it is valid for all the adjacent streets including the visitor center whose surroundings are disgusting. SF is a filthy city, it doesn't make you want to visit or come back.
The disappointment of our road trip.

I found the hotel clean and quiet, the staff kind and helpful. Very good value for money. Especially I think it's strategic the position on Mason, ideal point to get around the city both on foot and by public transport.

Location is awful. Surrounded by homeless crackheads. One welcomed me to the hotel mid piss on the front door. Charming. Didn't sleep at all due to the noise of said crackheads all night long despite being on the 8th floor. Room smelled like fresh paint and found this suspect stain on my drapes. The room was painted yellow. Also note there is no air conditioning.

Value for money not convenient. Old hotel, smelly no cable TV, too close to infamous neighborhoods.

I stayed in a room with two double beds. The room itself was small but off-white wallpaper with light olive green accents make the room feel larger than it is. Love the flower pots on balcony. Walls are quite thin and do poor job on soundproofing between rooms. Stairs are very small and narrow but there's a lift so no big deal. The hotel is located where tenderloin starts so not the best location, but not the worst as well.

The hotel has a ton of character, and is walking distance from all Market St activities. As with many big cities, it is always important to be aware of your surroundings. Neighborhood can get a bit rough around the edges at night but I have NEVER felt in danger. In fact, my kids love staying at this hotel. We walk straight out in to city fun straight from this hotel. Parking is safe and reasonable as well.

All of the front desk people we're extremely helpful and friendly! The best! Old hotel in the heart of San Francisco, the rooms are a bit small but nice. Walking distance to nearly everything! Loved the views from our room, had the window open to get the refreshing breeze of San Francisco, but got the smell of urine from all hobos, bums and homeless people that camp right outside on the sidewalk. If you want the old town feel, this is place to stay, FOR SURE!

Comfortable bed, and surprising water pressure (I know, a weird thing to be happy about) The walls are paper thin, the lobby smells like old lady perfume, and the neighborhood is deplorable. Homeless people everywhere, and openly using drugs, peeing on the sidewalk, yelling at themselves… or a wall…

The interior of the hotel was decent it was clean and well kept. Room service came by and changed the towels, cleaned the room and did the beds both days we were there. Regular amenities in the hotel room. Only thing wish it had a refrigerator and a microwave. The location of the hotel itself is a little shady. However it is a walking distances from a lot of "scenery" sites. That was a huge plus.

I recently stayed at the Metropolitan and found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. My flight arrived earlier than check in and I thought I would just have to leave my bags and go out to sight see for the day but they allowed me to check in early as they had a room available. I needed a refrigerator for medicine and called the front desk, which quickly brought one to my room. When I checked out of the hotel four days later I had a 6:00 am flight. The hotel staff ensured that a car was waiting to take me to the airport at 3:45 am. I was very pleased with the accommodations and the staff made it even better! I would highly recommend the hotel to my friends and colleagues.

Bar needs fresh air, its stuffy but nice place. I li j email the seats for bony ass.

Noisy, dated and expensive for what you get. Only giving it two stars because of its proximity to the city centre. Not more, because it is also very close to a dodgy area: Hotel sits right at the demarcation line between the blingy city centre and the Tenderloin, an area I would definitely avoid both day and night. Was quite shocked to see this day and night difference in atmosphere and perceived personal safety by literally just walking across the street.

This place is awesome! The location could not be more convenient, with BART and MUNI Metro a fraction of a block away, the Westfield Mall also across the street and barely a quarter block down, and Union Square and Moscone Center only a couple blocks further. The rooms have a fun and trendy decor, beds are super comfortable, and rooms are relatively well insulated from outside noise, important given the hotel's location. The hotel has a parking lot, so if you have a car, you'll have immediate access to it whenever you want. The only downside I can think to mention is that people unfamiliar with cities might be concerned by the floor show which is sometimes in progress outside on the streets in the neighborhood, but it would be nearly impossible to find somewhere so near so many things without one, and it can be entertaining to watch or otherwise be a part of… and never forget — voyeurism is participation! (credit goes to Short Bus for that bit of wisdom). To top it all off, the price is amazingly reasonable, particularly considering the location! It rocks!

It is the most centrally located budget hotel can choose, complies with quarters parents and always impeccable, do not enter through the main door, always do it through the parking lot will give them another view already veran. If the fourth q give them small is always ask to find them a larger for the same price.

Very nice building. Clean and spacious. Staff was friendly and very very helpful, fixed an error with our Groupon booking and let us check in early. My only complaint was the location, very noisy. But want can you do, we were in the city.

Perfect short stay (5 days) we got two twin rooms, comfy beds and good showers. Hotel staff helpful and friendly. Area is a bit rough but once you're 5mins away from hotel it's generally fine. You get what you pay for.

Accommodations were decent for the price. Room was very overheated.

Upon arrival we were greeted by a friendly front desk person. Room seemed nice. I'm a clean freak so I tried not to look closely at things. The bed sheets the first night didn't smell clean and kinda seemed like they were remade after someone slept in them. Nicely made but still dirty. There was long hair in my pillow and a smudge of some black dirt. The second night clean sheets; that smelled clean and fresh. The bathroom was cleanish the first night the second night was cleaner. It was almost like someone had stayed there and didn't get clean sheets just had the bed remade and decided not to sleep there again. The second night after putting the card in the pillow saying you want clean sheets the room was cleaned fresh. The room doesn't come with a fan and my traveling buddy and I were too tired to ask so we opened the window and the night breeze was great for me next to the window. He was still a bit warm. Hall ways had nice art work, clean carpets in hallways and in the lounge out was nice to see you can hang out or check out a book and take up to your room. Location was great. Outside was sketchy but what do you expect, it's a big city.

The "design" section already stopped after the lobby. The staff was rather unfriendly and intent more quickly to process us, 10 seconds twice to the Bills of my vouchers to ask me, just because I found this not immediately at hand, is almost offensive. The rooms were cleaned… The technology rather from the 60s and not more strictly functional, specially the shower head. The only elevator was constantly blocked with preferred travel of staff. We were on the 8th floor. The district is anything but 'safe' impressions, which is reflected also in the night-time noise, especially since our room to the side of the road was pretty much the sickest what I've ever seen, where you can only see junkies, drug use on the open road. Please never use children book… And "finally": parking; 160, — $ for 2 motorcycles and an SUV for 2 nights is just plain rip-offs and bottomless impudence. Never again…

Beds are a bit small no ac in room. Close to bad neighbour hood with homeless coming into the lobby annoying guests until security is called. Friendly staff.

The only good thing about this hotel is that it is very near the Warfield theater. I ordered online and the website said I could have up to four people in the room, but then they didn't have ANY extra beds, so two of my party had to sleep on the floor with no blankets. Also, there was no mini-fridge, and we had an ironing board with no iron. Additionally, I was charged extra for an oversized vehicle without reason. Poor selection of television channels. Terrible neighborhood, for how expensive the room was. It seemed obvious that these people do not care about return business. Find another hotel.

Stayed at the hotel for a race. The hotel is old and rooms are decent. The hotel neighborhood is definitely not the greatest. It is really close to the Powell Bart station and very close to union square which is a big hub of activity. There is construction across the street so sleeping in usually is hard to do since they start work at 6 am. You get what you pay for with this hotel if you are willing to pay the extra $30 to $50 a night there are several nicer hotels closer to union square.

Cool lobby rooms were okay definitely nothing to brag about. Service was friendly.

Place was pretty old, dirty, and run-down. I contracted athletes foot from the shower. The bed was itchy (bed bugs? ). I wouldn't stay here again.

Not that what we have promised us. One is anything from the design hotel. The rooms were clean. The area is really terrible. To the left you're after a few metres on foot in the most expensive shopping area of SF.! Run to the right is of concern after just five meters. It stands directly in the worst ghetto of SF. This isn't a joke. This is the smallest and most dangerous police district. Every week a gunfight (but rather in the evening and at night). I can say this only partly because a police officer has told us this. The hotel staff was partly friendly. The parking fees are $30 (without taxes) per day really naughty. The gym is in a small room with a treadmill and a stepper — both already somewhat older. The background noise was sometimes really intense. Sleeping was possible only in stages. The price — performance ratio is not agreed.

Hotel very well located and good care.

Fitness center is a home treadmill and 1990's stepper. That is all. Well there was a TV but it was out of service. location is horrible especially for the price of a room. I didn't seen any security cameras. I know there isn't any in the hallways. Don't trust pics on website.

Rooms and beds ok. The area around the hotel is nothing to the night running around. Around the hotel, it is very noisy and the room does not stop the noise.

The first room assigned to us was not very correct, cold since the windows not closed properly, for what you ask the receptionist (excellent by the way, a new room. ) This last was on the roof was wide and comfortable, didn't have nothing to do with the previous one.
By the way even if they are in an area close to many homeless, we had no problem.

I visited Hotel Metropolis about a week ago and am still waiting for management to contact me about my missing watch. The hotel itself is in a bad area of San Francisco although it states it is in the Union Square area it is definitely on the far end of Union Square. At first I thought I could look past the area but the noise at night was unbearable, I didn't sleep a wink all night from the sirens and traffic outside to the paper thin walls inside. The hotel was such a disappointment that my friends and I checked out after one night (originally we were supposed to stay there for five nights). Maybe that is why the hotel management won't call me back about my watch. Don't waste your money or your time, especially if you are a girl this hotel is probably not for you.

Went there 2011 2012 for gay pride; Hotel and service was. Ok but what really made my trip unpleasant was the parking services; My friends car was CLEARLY damaged do to their carelessness and to top it off The Workers gave us attitude when we tried to tell them something was wrong with our car. Over all, not coming back to this place.

Rooms and hotel quite nice, the neighborhood is a bit ugly, the prettiest Mason Street starts at number 150. For breakfast they give you a little bag with inside a few things to eat in a room that, barely, has 10 seats. Do not rely on breakfast and be careful when you leave, otherwise you will find yourself quite well.

Half the ghetto (dangerous) measly breakfast, rooms located in old, noisy but reasonably clean, high parking fee.

Clean and spacious room. Super Bed (3 nights). The hotel is at a tram intersection. An infernal noise all night without interruption! Even with the quies balls, you hear the tramps screaming all night… We were only at the 3rd floor… it might be better if one is in the 10th… Free Wi-Fi, great! Nice welcome not speaking French. A large parking lot for car or motorbike (closed at night 20 dollars). No breakfast, just coffee or tea but going up House Street, stop at the Lories Diner, the quality and the reception are impeccable.

Hotel smells bad, this decadent, and the area is scary out as it has been for the homeless, there are other better hotels.
