Charming hotel, superb location, staff couldn't be friendlier or more helpful. State of upkeep not brilliant, lots of minor things eg clock not working, toilet roll holder so crooked it's useless, light not working, plumbing problems: toilet takes 15 minutes to fill up after flushing, etc.
Though I have given this place one star, it's not because of staff or food. The food is excellent and the dining & reception staff are wonderful; they deserve a better hotel to work in. The hotel gets one star as I have to give it something to be able to write a review; I'd like to give it a minus score for the hotel itself. I had to move three times due to faults; a major one being when the bathroom started to flood when I turned on the shower. The building is a wonderful Victorian place but, looking at the rooms (& I saw enough of them) and even the public areas, the whole place looks tatty. It was, evidently, 'refurbished' as quickly & cheaply as possible and by amateurs. OK, I'm not looking for The Hilton, but the electrical sockets on the wall were loose, the windows were stiff (not good with this heatwave summer), even the carpets weren't laid very well. Everything looked tatty & grimy. The beds were lumpy & uncomfortable & much of the furniture & fittings were broken. I happened to see the owner but he didn't seem interested.
