Rather small hotel. But love that it's housed in a old building. Very pretty. Location right smack in the center of all the historical things.

An average hotel, the recent rooms being much better and more hygienic than older ones. The presence of stairs in room corridors betraying it is a bunch o buildings strung together, which is inconvenient. Breakfast is good, however.

Nice food and good service.

If you pay less than £100 it's not bad at all but when you spend £192 it's not good and you feel cheated. "lipstick on a pig" — stay away from room the kitchen fan is outside the window and is on and loud from 6AM until 10PM. Bathroom is beautifully renovated but floor tiles are coming up and shower leaks water everywhere; floor boards are all loose and squeak, — this includes hallway, so you are woken up when people come and go. We most likely will be going back as you cannot beat the location and we will be booking well in advance which should lower the cost. Lounge was comfortable and food was excellent 1st day and sub-par the second. Staff were all very nice but had limited or no training.

Brilliant hotel, rooms and location lovely. Service from staff next to none. Lost my room key while out at an event, emailed the hotel and there was a new one waiting for me when I got back. Couldn't recommend enough.

Arrived Christmas Eve for the 3-night break at the Mecure Eastgate Hotel in Oxford. Bedroom small but large shower room. Restaurant is quite shambolic although the food is good. Twice our dinner order went to another table. A breakfast was completely different from what was ordered, ie, scrambled egg, sausages and hash brown ordered, bacon mushrooms, tomatoes and egg arrived. Most disappointing is that for the evening meal and Christmas lunch, paper serviettes supplied not linen ones. Never had this before, very poor. The Oxford walk included on the break was superb, brilliant guide. Staff are so polite and helpful but not good when the wrong meals keep turning up. Oxford is great but would choose a different hotel.

The Mercure Easgate has an outstanding location for those wishing to visit the Oxford University colleges. It is very convenient to most of the famous locations. The rooms are not large but are comfortable and well appointed. The hotel dining room is just that — I rarely like hotel dining restaurants,

Nice little hotel on one of Oxfords oldest streets, off red parking facilities 5 minutes from city centre (unless you get sidetracked by one of the college's or Christchurch meadow) very helpful and friendly staff plus you have the Marco Pierre White restaurant inside, perfect.

Great service, lovely room and fantastic location — bathrobe had a rip in it though, and no toothpaste in the bathroom (weirdly) — but they brought up paste & disposable brushes for free. Also when I left my coat there they were fantastic — had a good look for it then posted it back to me next day for free. Would definitely stay again.

Location is good, reasonable walking distance to shopping street. Rooms sizes differ, and shower area can get wet. Good service.

Minor issues kept this from 5 stars, but a comfortable, quiet (even during exam celebrations! ) and upscale residence. Lovely bar, marvelous service and a marvelous location just between Madeleine College and the Botanical Gardens makes it a gem.

Stunning hotel in central Oxford, a rare combination. Good cocktail in the 'library' downstairs. Shares location with a Marco Pierre White Brasserie, which is OK for a quick meal.

Nice but expensive hotel.

The staff is really nice, the rooms are small but really comfortable. Also the showers are heavenly. The complimentary breakfast is amazing and extremely filling. The location is perfect for setting out to explore Oxford. Definitely would recommend!

Have stayed at the Eastgate many times since 1999. Not luxury. But very comfortable and great location. Easy walk to any meeting in town. Staff gives you your privacy. Does good work when needed.

Stayed Sunday 17/1/16 First impressions good, staff helpful ground floor bar area nice. We were given a room on the top floor where the lift does not reach. Common parts were a bit worn but the room was ok for a hunchback. No mention of the very low roof beams over the bed. My girlfriend smashed her head on it at 3 in the morning when getting up to go to the loo. Stay ruined. I complained at the time and in the morning took it up with the duty manager showing her the lump on my girlfriends head. I suggested some form of compensation in a very polite manner and was told the head manager would write to me. He didn't bother. My girlfriend left her nightie on the back of the bathroom door. When I rang back on Weds it was not reported as found. Ps the picture of the green hedge at the front is a con. Not a bad hotel as such but I won't be returning.

Conveniently located in a quiet side street off High Street. Rooms a bit on the small side but it's a trade-off for staying in an old building with some history.

We found the hotel was extremely overpriced for what we got, especially as breakfast and parking is not included even though the room rate is £195.00. The staff were indifferent both on check-in and check-out. The cleaners were noisy and played music in the other bedrooms which woke us up early on Sunday morning. Do not stay in room 402 as it is near the staff back entrance and car park which is noisy early in the morning with cleaning, emptying rubbish bins etc. The bed is extremely hard and uncomfortable and the shower was not draining. It's clean and has free Wi-Fi but is not worth its luxury price tag!

Avoid room 301. No shower, just a bath you can't even stand up in. The room is directly above the delivery entrance (06:30 laundry delivery is especially noisy) and next to the stairs between the second and third floors which you can hear people pounding up and down. Because there is no lift to the 3rd floor! Not the place to stay if you have heavy bags. Breakfast was a debacle with 3 out of 4 of our party not getting what they ordered, and one person being served three different breakfasts (really, he had to fight them off). Staff are pleasant, but unable to help me move rooms, and clearly not able to manage a breakfast service. The location of the hotel is great and the room clean and well maintained.

There for 3 nights for Skoll World Forum in Oxford. Had fortune to enjoy the Ruskin Suite which was beauitful and enormous. Service however was very mediocre.

The Mercure Oxford is based in an old building, so there are certain things you are not going to be able to change — the lift is tiny, the floors creak, the shower alternates between hot / cold, the decor is a bit tired and the car park entrance is one of the narrowest I've ever encountered. So why give this hotel a good review? Well, its position is great, the breakfast is very good indeed and (above all else) the staff we had dealings with were some of the very best we have encountered in any hotel. In other words, despite the London prices, the good more than made up for the bad — just.

Okay, none of the other world, the girls serving are very friendly and very good.

The Eastgate offers great value for money and I really enjoy staying there. It has a fabulous location right on the High Street, comfortable and newly renovated rooms and a good breakfast.

I stayed at the Eastgate recently as part of a small business group. We were sort of amused to eventually pool our opinions and experiences and learn we were surprised by the hotel's unhelpful staff. Our comments don't apply to all staff — — an early-morning clerk, as example, was most helpful. But the daytime staff were disorganized and unhelpful. Even the concierge had to be prodded to give over information. And that isn't normal. We've also stayed before at the Four Pillars hotel in Oxford. Our collective judgment was that it is by far the better hotel, but its location was less convenient than the Eastgate, which is well situated. My suggestion to readers: be prepared to go one block up High Street to an internet shop and use the computers there to learn local information, including the times/places of the local Heathrow airport shuttle, movies, bus routes, and restaurants. The Eastgate staff will not easily part with the information, and the guest has to provide it for himself.
