Be careful. They don't close your room door after cleaning! Great location for peace and seeing red squirrels. Coffee and juice a bit weak at breakfast. Public rooms lovely. Some bedrooms dated.

Loved my stay here. Beautiful location with lovely walks, home to red squirrels. Art Deco style with comfortable rooms and reasonable selection of food and great breakfast.

First time in a hotel with our dog, initially disappointed, water pressure… hardly any, curtains hanging off the rails, cobwebs in bathroom. We only stayed 2 night's but on the plus side the scenery is fantastic, the room was spacious, the staff are lovely and once we settled in had a fantastic break… we would still come back. All these things are little things and didn't detract from our break if these were sorted I would give 5 stars.

If you are looking for somewhere cheap to stay and don’t want to be spoken to by most of the staff this is an okay hotel for the price. Being in our early 20’s we felt most the staff ignored us from the minute we landed and we felt little to no respect from most of them during our stay. When asking for a morning coffee (because no one came to ask if we wanted a drink) we were greeted by “yeah” and on checking out we were left with “you can go”. The food was okay but very very overpriced for £12.50, much nicer places to eat in nearby cities for the same price. However, the bar staff were incredibly lovely and asked about our day, and the gentleman hosting the tables on the saturday night was also very courteous. Overall, if we ever saw a discount we would probably stay again, but you can find much more characterful and friendly hotels for the price.

Old 30's style hotel. Food and drink OK. Service good. Location challenging. Nearby walks likewise but worth it. Rooms need deep clean and upgrade in all honesty.

Went using a wowcher and it was so-so. The staff are all extremely friendly and welcoming, and the breakfast is good, the hotel is also in a beautiful setting. The issues we encountered were all with the room. We stayed in 'the old bath house', which is a smaller building resembling a pub across from the car park. It should be called 'the poor house'. We didn't expect it to be the best room in the hotel with what we paid but surely there has to be certain standards to be renting out a room whatever you're charging. The room smelled musty and I can't put my finger on what else it smelled of other than I'm sure it had previously been a smoking room at some point (the decor would date back to the era of smoking rooms in hotels), the water pressure was appalling and unusable for purpose. The toilet was battle to flush and the sink and shower made the most awful screeching/grinding noise when you turned it on. You couldn't use the shower as nothing came out so we ended up ringing reception (had to Google and call from my mobile as the room phone has no number or option to call reception which is strange), they quickly brought us a key for another room to shower (and allowed us an extra half an hour to get to breakfast) but that didn't work either so I eventually had to crouch in the bath and stick my head under the tap to wash my hair! The grout in the bathroom was also unclean.

Remote location down bumpy track that's also a diversion route to the M6 southbound at Tebay. Food and drink are good with reasonable portions and fair prices. Rooms and communal areas are styled from the 1930s and truthfully only 3/5. The remote setting surrounded by interesting, varied walks to explore is what this establishment is all about. Beware of themed weekends and special events though! We escaped but I'm told that they can be rather challenging if you're not part of the gang!

This is a lovely old hotel. The staff are all friendly and polite and helpful. It is undergoing refurbishment at the moment but it didn't spoil our weekend. If you're very lucky you might get to see a red squirrel or two!

Really difficult to find in the dark, but a 'phone call sorted that. Very welcoming of our doggy. Very pleasant rooms and public areas. Normally we find 'places like these' with very tired, aging decoration — but this was lovely. Staying in a couple of days on our return journey — and looking forward to it! Nice woodland walk, red squirrels… can't get much better :-)

The rooms are well presented and comfortable. Our shower was great. The bath however was very narrow. The evening meals were to die for, just delicious. A big no no for breakfasts — ask for something freshly cooked. They seem to batch cook everything then put them under the lights to keep warm. They dont keep them warm. They need to address this. We did inform them.

The hotel is located a significant distance from Shap itself. If arriving via Penrith station expect a £40 cab journey. The surroundings are remote with some very short walks around the hotel grounds. There is a walking route to Shap via a quarry (! ). However it was extremely challenging due to some blown down trees. During the summer it's probably a very pleasant walk. Food at the hotel is serviceable at best, and felt expensive for what it is. In overview please bring a car otherwise you will struggle to get anywhere!

Lovely hotel, friendly staff except the reception lady working on 27/12/17. Doesn't seem very friendly. We understand she has to get off her chair holding her sticks but I assume she is the only one giving us the keys wherever they were. No smile when we checked out, she turned her back, checked everything and said all done. Wouldn't even look at us. But the lady working on 28/12/17, Thursday night at the reception was really sweet. Breakfast was excellent. Would go there again and recommend as well.

A lovely quiet hotel, the surrounding countryside is beautiful, you can hear the stream from your room. Old fashioned aesthetic. Staff friendly and helpful. Clean. The food from the bar wasn't very nice. Magical over christmas.

A lovely isolated location for a fairly large hotel, though being in a dip in the landscape the views aren't extensive. Wonderful to be able to walk 100 metres from the front door and see red squirrels. Rooms slightly dated but clean, tidy and comfortable. Friendly service, though more focused on big groups than individual travellers. Wifi excellent — I watched them digging their own trench for fibre-optic cables a few years ago. The hotel is located a few metres from the north-eastern edge of the Lake District National Park (the stream running past the hotel is the boundary) and less than a mile from the northwestern part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

We spent 2 nights here. It is close to the motorway and a good base to get to all the lakes. It is clean and has a good bar menu in the evenings. There are lots of small stairs when getting to bedrooms after taking the lift to your floor.

A very English old style hotel set in some amazing countryside. I would of given them 5 stars if it wasn't for the food bill at the bar. The till will charge more for food than the prices on the menu, the manages know about the problem and only refund customers if they challenge the bill. The building across the car park contains the hotels pet friendly rooms and one of these rooms is disabled friendly but has an over bath shower. The rooms are clean and freshly decorated in an old English style. The paving slabs outside the main entrance can be very slippy when wet and covered in leaves as I found out the hard way, the staff didn't care that I had hurt myself and had no interest in clearing away the leaves. The only people to ask if I was okay was a blind man and his wife who were giving there dog some fresh air by the entrance.

If you are aged 20 or over, choose another hotel, as the youngest party was about 50 years old. The hallways reek and the FLOORS are wonky, with a semi-rude staff team at reception a d waiters. Parking is not sufficient for full house, food is TERRIBLE and overpriced. The history brochure contained a hilarious amount of spelling mistakes, the lift was excruciatingly slow, and the games room required guests to pay, to play pool, even with charging room prices equal to 5 star hotels. The rooms windows only open less than 15cm, letting no air in, and going in the summer, nights were very warm. "Double beds" are 2 singles stuck together, so you may find yourself uncomfortable with the gap in the centre, and you will lose small objects there. The only positive factor was the breakfast.

Dirty, Mouldy rooms. The meals are microwave meals that are horrible to eat and are astronomically priced for what you get. Could buy better at Iceland.

Here now and loving it! The staff put my son and I in a triple room and it is lovely. Really cosy and the bathroom is beautiful. Room feels clean and fresh. I already can't wait to come back. Yet to try the food. Staff are super helpful and friendly from reception to bar to room attendants. I feel completely confident being a single mum here. It's wonderful.

Nice comfortable place, decent rooms in a nice location. Down side… beer was poor and the house wine tasted like vinegar. Breakfast was alright but you get the impression that they are under staffed. As soon as it gets a little bit busy they are very slow. That being said enjoyed it enough and it probably wouldn't take much for this place to be excellent.

Stayed for one night. Had a lovely stay, room was clean and satisfactory. Staff appeared to be nice and friendly. Food was good. Lovely area, with lovely views. Would stay again.

Wonderful location but room was typical of efforts to squeeze as many in as possible. Too few beds in the room we booked so another bed was crammed in making it very awkward. Only 2 sockets in the entire room, one of which was used by the kettle. Patchy Wi-Fi. Food was OK but staff were a mixed bag and many didn't speak English particularly well. Uneven, squeaky floors and hidden ramps everywhere. Wasn't as good as I had expected.

The road getting there is long and strange at night, but it's a good hotel!

Attended a wedding, fantastic venue with great food and attentive staff. Stayed the night and the rooms were very clean, mattress was a little firm for my liking though.

Firstly, I would definitely stay again! Having said this, our reservations were handled badly by duty staff! We were one room short and so given an additional room which turned out to be in a bit of a state — this situation should have been handled more professionally by the staff. rooms are comfortable, but basic and dated. So for value for money, yes! I would recommend though that staff are made more aware of the importance of quality customer service.

Friendly staff, Excellent food, lovely room, we really enjoyed our stay. Even had a special appearance from a bat! We would recommend this hotel to anybody.

Fantastic hotel in great surroundings. The meal was fabulous, the fish is especially good. Nothing was too much, I brought my partner for his graduation an they made every effort to put banners and balloons up. The bedroom is beautiful with views over the river and hills. I will definitely return.
