Reviews of The Read House 4*
Beautiful hotel with great employees and great service.
Awesome hotel convenient to everything in town.
Gorgeous atmosphere, excellent customer service and a classy yet fun vibe.
Only stayed one night but everything was wonderful. Every staff member was gracious and helpful. We had our company Christmas party there and it was wonderful! I couldn’t have asked for better! Come to think of it, it’s the best hotel stay I’ve had!
This place is magical. The staff is so friendly. The bed is beyond comfortable. I would give it a 10 star if I could.
Great place to stay! Like stepping into the 1920s.
The staff here are fabulous. The most beautiful hotel I’ve been to.
Great stay! Love this hotel❤️will definitely be back. Love the rooms so clean and spacious. Very chic and classy. Great staff also❤️❤️four stars for sure.
Great experience we were welcomed by Wesley & David at the desk. They were very helpful to us being all the way from Australia. Night caps in the bar with Haley & Kelly. Beautiful hotel can not fault it. Susanne.
Excellent hotel to stay at while visiting Chattanooga. We met couples from all over on vacation, baby moons, just for a weekend getaway (like ourselves) etc. You can stay on two different sides of the hotel, one is about $30-40 more a night and considered the more historic side. We stayed on the historic side and it was lovely. The check-in process is seamless and everyone has great mannerisms. The rooms are spacious and the beds comfortable. The linens are fresh as you would expect from this hotel. The hotel always smelled fantastic as I’m sure it’s the air scent diffuser (which is wonderful). The bathroom is spacious and enough room for two. There’s a light up makeup mirror in the bathroom (plus for us doing makeup). Housekeeping kept the room tidy and replaced our linens daily. They always kept the room looking as if it was our first day checking in. They offer room service and have a steakhouse ($$$) downstairs and full bar. We chose valet as there are very few meters in front of the hotel. They charge you from 8a-6p and then are free until 8a the next day. I believe they run around $1 an hour. The other option was the parking garage about a block away. The valet service was great. Always quick to get our vehicle and we’ll mannered. We Ubered to our destinations if we didn’t want to drive back. A lot is within walking distance. Others are Uber mins away and worth it. Would definitely stay here again. 10/10 recommended, especially for a 2-3 day stay.
We love the whole experience. The history is awesome, and they have stayed authentic to the period.
Beautiful, historic hotel with amazing customer service and beautiful atmosphere and bar. The historic tower I highly recommend (and don’t forget to ask for a tour of the infamous room 311).
I absolutely adore this place. It makes me smile every time I walk through the front doors. Art Deco design of the Historic Towers is fabulous, as are the rooms with enormous bathrooms with walk-in showers, comfortable beds, and extremely friendly and attentive staff. One of my favorite oases.
Beautiful hotel. Warm and friendly staff. Perfect location. We highly recommend Read House.
Nice rooms. Friendly and helpful staff.
They are rude. Charge your credit card when they shouldn't have. And dont refund it back without a big ordeal. They take forever to do everything. Don't stay here!
Great location and service. Nice staying right in town and visiting the local shops.
My favorite hotel in Chattanooga. Super friendly and helpful staff.
Gorgeous place! The staff was super awesome and everything was very clean.
Wonderful atmosphere and great service.
The decor and th3 beauty of the place. Martinis and oysters are the best.
A beautiful hotel with impeccable manners and service. Highly recommended!
WONDERFUL! Beautiful hotel, beautiful rooms, comfortable bed. And such a thoughtful staff.
Came with my best friend for a girls weekend for my birthday and they had a bottle of champagne waiting for me!
They really made us feel special.
Lovely hotel in walking distance to a lot of great restaurants and things to do. Only draw back was only one elevator appeared to be working.
Beautiful, great hotel! Wonderful staff. Nice pool. Bad bath soap, but I give them a pass on that. Classy all around.
The Read House exceeded my expectations! The decor is stunning and the staff is amazing! We only stayed one night passing through to our destination but we will definitely be back!
Fantastic atmosphere. Gorgeous lobby. Comfortable rooms. We will be back ❤️
Beautifully restored hotel. Be sure to wander around while you are there. Friendly staff and the valley parking was awesome.
The staff was nice, the location is good, and parking overnight was only $15. The hotel rooms are being renovated which is badly needed. The soap holder in the shower had so much soap scum I wouldn't use it. Some TV channels were fuzzy and the guide to rent movies didn't work. The pool still has a classic feel and will be nice after the renovation but right now the water is cold and one of the lights in the pool hangs to the bottom. For the price I would recommend it only if you had a budget to stick to. I wouldn't stay there again.
Our room was quite spacious and had a good view of the city. The price was very fair for one night. Both beds in the room had plenty of pillows, were clean, and very comfortable. The lobby was under construction so we couldn't eat or drink at the hotel. The bathrooms didn't have proper vents, and the paint on the doors was worn. Not a bad stay, but nothing overly positive to say. Definitely worth the price just for the comfortable beds and cleanliness.
Don't let the construction for you. Rooms that are available to exceptionally nice. And what their advertising that they will become is phenomenal. The staff is fantastic and I had a particularly push will conversation with their assistant manager. Everyone is courteous, and they were very accommodating with history and goals.
As soon as you walk in there's an updated and classy room on display behind glass. You think that's what you're getting, right?! NO The hallway carpet is old and dingy The fixtures are outdated (lamps, phone chairs, etc. ). And there's only one outlet on the lamp on the nightstand. The place is dark altogether. The TVs are flat screens; however, mine was attached to a light switch. So when I was ready to turn in for the night, naturally I turned the lights off. Well, a switch also turns the TV off. I called downstairs and told the front desk lady and she had a technician come up. He told me about the switch. There should be a note in the room somewhere that tells you do not turn off a certain light switch because it controls the TV. More than half of the channels were grainy Speaking of turning in for the night, be sure you ask for a room AWAY from the elevator. If you're near the elevator, you'll have to endure constant grinding of the elevator going up and down in the walls all night and morning and throughout the day if you're in the room. There were all kinds of stains and breaks in the bathtub. It should have been resurfaced years ago. I stepped in the shower with sandals on since I couldn't fly with Lysol or bleach. Finally, a fire alarm went off about 10:30 in the morning on a Monday. Okay, at least the intercom system works. However, another lady and myself walk down to the lobby level exit door and guess what? The door is locked! We cannot get out.
The Read House is a gorgeous hotel but a bit pricey for what you get. They are currently under some much needed renovations. Great location, close to a ton of amazing restaurants and bars. Staff is super friendly and helpful even during the renovations. Bathrooms are a bit cramped but the size of the rooms is great. Have stayed before and would stay again. I think once the construction is over it will be a five star stay for sure.
Location was good. Right in the middle of downtown Chattanooga. The room was comfortable and had plenty of space for our party of four. Only complaint I had was the "heated" pool was freezing cold despite our stay being right in the middle of summer.
My husband and I had a wonderful experience for our anniversary. The hotel upgraded us twice as a gift. It was such a great experience. And now we are going for a late night swim! We definitely recommend this hotel if you are visiting Chattanooga.
We weren't even guests, but our friends were and we felt welcome each time we came to visit! The room they were in was spacious and clean. The pool was great. I will definitely suggest it to others who are coming to visit.
Staff was friendly, pool was indoors (very nice) and within walking distance to restaurants/aquarium/zoo. Looking forward to the upgrades. I would recommend.
The hotel is undergoing a renovation so I knew areas of it would be rather run down. My reservation had me with a City View but I was not able to get that since I checked in at 9. The air conditioning did not work very well at all and it was rather warm in the room most of the night. The shower had very little pressure and it took several minutes to rinse my hair from the shampoo. It's in a pretty good location but a half block away there was a hotel at half the price.
I understand the hotel's position, but the miscommunication was extremely inconvenient and cost me $ and quality in finding alternative places to stay. I booked two nights as part of a wedding deal. My transportation plans changed, and I called and canceled to one night ten days before the original check-in. Seven days before the original check-in, an email shared that I was still expected for two nights. I called Sunday, five days before the original check-in, to clarify that I'd spoken with someone over the phone and canceled the Friday night. I was informed that the gentleman I spoke with was mistaken and that I could not modify my reservation from two nights to one night, although I could cancel the stay entirely. The initial miscommunication/mistake on their employee's part caused me to lose out on other accommodations as they were booked between my initial attempt to cancel only one night and finding out that I could not. It also is very convenient for them that they now will be able to book a guest at a normal rate, rather than the group wedding rate. Again, I understand the policy issue, but the miscommunication/mistake cost me almost a week of accommodations' availability, leaving me scrambling to find a place for a downtown wedding with only five days, rather than eleven, until the check-in date.
Not only is this one of the oldest hotels in downtown Chattanooga, but part of hotel is being renovated, the part that has the most haunted room in the city. Lucky you, if you enjoy staying in haunted places, because this place delivers. Details at Chattanooga Ghost Tours. Otherwise, enjoy a heated indoor pool, valet parking and the only Starbucks in the downtown area. Renovations on the MLK side are to be completed in the Fall of 2018.
Very nice hotel! Excellent valet service and great staff! Beds are comfortable and rooms well appointed. We are staying during the renovation so we can't see the real beauty of the hotel. But we will return once the renovation is complete. Very convenient location near the convention center and Aquarium. Free shuttle runs every five minutes. Walk to the Tivoli!
Google forces you to at least give 1 star… however, I give no stars. First off the creepy maintenance guy whistling down the hallways was staring at me, what seemed like every time I opened my door. My room had bed bugs on the sheets and mattress, I tried ordering room service but they neglect to tell you half of the hotel is shut down until 2019. I ordered out, and left my food in my room covered, returned to roaches ON TOP of the take out box… and last but not least, I found 6 randomly placed mini chocolate donuts in various places throughout my ENTIRE hotel room… needless to say, I will never go back to this hotel.
We love history. Love the decor and feel of the hotel. Much needed getaway with my hubby. He just got back from deployment.
We stayed at the Read House in the summer of 2017. We had a wonderful stay. The room was clean but needed a renovation to bring it more up to date. We stopped by this past weekend to check on the progress of the renovation. We were not able to see the lobby but they do have a room you can view. It is going to be so beautiful when it is completed later this year.
Right now the Read house is under renovations. They are doing a great job from the inside ofnot being able to notice. If you like the sound of thunder all night long get a room right next to the elevators. We didn't ask for it but we received it and it did wake me up a couple of times overnight. It wasn't loud but if your susceptible to noise as I am it can affect you. We are wanting to go back after there renovations are done and check out room 311. A lot of history in this hotel.
Have read some reviews about a smell in the Hotel, there is a smell in the valet parking area and the back door where you enter from the valet but it is not a terrible smell. I feel like it is actually the downtown area. The hotel itself is beautiful very elegant an historic the room we stayed in was nice but there were a few problems with the maintenance again nothing that cannot be overlooked, and it doesn't take away from the overall experience of the hotel. It is very convenient to the downtown Chattanooga area close to all the attractions close to several restaurants and within walking distance of a lot of the downtown area. I read reviews about the safety Factor in downtown Chattanooga but we walked a few times and had no problems even late at night. One plus is the Starbucks in the lobby area that is accessible from the outside too. Did not have a chance to try room service or the steakhouse downstairs but next time I'm in Chattanooga I will stay here again and hope to try those out.
Very disappointed customer. Don't stay here if you are planning on seeing the "historic" part of the hotel. We stayed here this past weekend. They are renovating and where they have you staying looks nothing like the pictures on the website. I was very disappointed and felt like the hotel should make customers aware when making a reservation of what is happening at the hotel. The steakhouse is no longer open. Our view was of a wall. You open the curtains and all you see is a brick wall. I am not one to leave negative things about businesses, but I just feel like people who maybe contemplating on staying here knows exactly what to expect — as I had no clue and was SOOO disappointed. The pluses were — the staff was nice and the bed was comfortable. *****UPDATE****** 12/05 The hotel manager was understanding to my disappoint and refunded my stay. I am glad that they are willing to try to make things right. Hope the hotel looks amazing once all of the renovations are complete.
Overall a decent experience. However it is due for a remodel and is about to close for said remodel. That being said the toilet leaked, the online booking did not provide an area for you to inform them that you have a pet and apparently gas with dogs are limited to the second and third floor so I was charged after the fact. The bed was extremely comfortable. But for your stay be prepared to pay $15 plus tip for valet.
This place could be such a nice hotel, the location is great and the lobby is beautiful. That’s about where the nice words end however. The rooms are way over due for a major overhaul. The room itself feels very dark, especially at night. The couch had rips in it and the bathroom was all kinds of dingy. The grout started out creme colored at the walls and by the middle of the floor it was black and nasty. The shower just felt dingy too with layer upon layer of caulking thrown on all the seams. To top it off mattress had a horrible divot in it and there was zero place to charge a phone within 6’ of the bed. I mean, come on, that’s the least they could do is give us a place to charge our phone.
We were there this weekend for my friend's birthday. I had heard many great things about this hotel and it has always been her favorite so I was looking forward to it. The lobby was nice. That is about the only good thing I can say. Our room was a nice size but it was a DUMP! She called to change rooms. She went to look at it and decided that ours was the lesser of two evils. The moldy, musty smell got me when I got off the elevator. The room had peeling wallpaper in the bathroom, water stains on the ceiling, stains on the curtains, stains on the chair, a very large red spot in the carpet and the linens on the bed did not match. Also, there was a very small dorm size refrigerator on the floor. This is not what I expect for a $300 per night hotel. The wall unit air conditioner was due for a cleaning for sure. I now have no voice and my allergies are crazy. I am sure it is due to the mold, must and mildew of this place. I don't think I have ever stayed at such a bad hotel. Do not stay here!
Elegant lobby, very polite staff. Rooms are small, bathrooms smaller with no counter space. Add $15/day for parking. Restaurant is Porter's Steakhouse, nothing for my vegan spouse. Convenient to sights in Chtnga, walking distance and in the free shuttle line. Doubt we would stay there again.
My wife and I came to Chattanooga for the weekend. We stayed 2 nights in a Junior Suite at the Read House. The room was plenty spacious. The bathroom, though small, was clean and reasonably updated. Any complaints I have would mostly be directly related to the age of the hotel so they aren't really complaints at all since the charm would largely be lost without them. The hotel is in a perfect location as pretty much anything we had interest in doing was within easy walking distance. I'd definitely recommend it for anyone who hasn't stayed before.
The entry is gorgeous and clearly cared for. This place has a lot of historic charm so we chose it. The thrill wore off instantly as we entered the room and the smell of perfume and mold/mildew overwhelmed. We asked for another room and they gladly took care of it. The second was a bit better but the stale smell was still in there too. After about an hour we decided to pull the curtains only to find no darkening panel and we were facing a parking garage that has lights on all night. They were out of curtains so we would have to move again. We opened the 3rd room door and again the moldy, musty, stale smell. We closed the door and asked to check out. Now the staff were all friendly, courteous and inviting. They did all they could and they are a saving Grace in the Read House. It's clear that the updates scheduled next year are drastically needed. I am someone with health issues and after an hour in that second room my lungs felt heavy. Upon going outside they cleared up. I hope the owners will look into the mold smell and details that need to be corrected. We hope to see improved reviews next year after renovations and can try our stay again.
Stayed one night. Everyone was pleasant and helpful, from my short experience. Thought it was a bit much that they charge $15 a day for valet parking; must have missed that when I booked the hotel. Received an upgrade to a junior suite; the room was nice, but the bathroom was small. Overall it was nice hotel.
There is nothing to NOT love about this place. The history, the grandeur, the service. We will be back over and over again! The personnel went out of their way to take care of our needs. The beds are to die for! So soft and comfortable that I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow, and take it from someone who is in pain everyday of their life, and rarely sleeps 3 hours straight, I slept all night long! We got 2 rollaway beds, 1 had a good mattress, 1 didn't. I called the front desk and they took care of it immediately! No noisy elevators, our air conditioner worked perfectly… kept it below 70, even on a hot day. I have no complaints, except… I didn't get to stay long enough! Excuse the length, first time leaving feedback.
This hotel was in a great location. Walking distance to food, nightlife, and the aquarium. The room was clean and the pillows were comfy. The only issue was the shower head which faced toward the shower curtain. This plus there not being a lip to keep the water inside the shower area made quite a mess. This did not ruin my stay though and I would probably stay there again.
The location is great, Chattanooga is a very pedestrian friendly city and the free shuttle is right outside the hotel. Valet parking is also nice and there is a Starbucks and restaurant in the hotel. The restaurant was just OK; there is a classic 24h diner that is a better breakfast option. The rooms vary quite a bit in layout and size. Ours had a sitting area with couch and chairs. The air conditioning was cold but loud, and the carpet kind of had a perpetually damp feeling. The pillows were feather and comfortable, and the bed was good if a little soft. Room refrigerator s are available upon request, the staff is very accommodating, and the style of the hotel is totally classic. They are working on renovating the hotel in the next year, I hope they update without killing the charm. The pool is very shallow, about 3ft at max, and heavily chlorinated. Family loved it though. They don't have a gym, but had treadmill, elliptical and sitting stationary bike. All in all, I recommend the hotel.
I didn't stand there was car for what it is.
We stayed at The Read House during a recent visit to Chattanooga. We had booked for the wrong dates and called ahead to try to rebook. They where amazing. They booked us another room with an upgrade and even apologized for our mistake. The inn was beautiful and full of incredible history. Every interaction with the emoyees went above and beyond expected customer service. Sarah in Porters was hands down the best bartender we've ever had and if you go you have got to try her margarita. We will definitely book The Read House again.
Great location, nice rooms but air conditioning needs updating. We stayed in the middle of July and first room was hot, second room better but not by much. Also the curtains to make the room dark only went half way. Would not stay at this location again.
The inn was beautiful. The price is comparable to that of modern hotel chains. It looks expensive through the photographs but really isn't. The staff is very nice and courteous.
My husband and I really enjoyed our stay here. The bed was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in! That's no exaggeration. We enjoyed the layout of the room as there was a sitting room separate from the bedroom. The staff was very friendly and gave us a complimentary upgrade so we could have extra room for our 8 month old son. They also brought a crib to our room at no extra charge. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because the bathroom was very small, and there was no fridge in the room. However, our experience was wonderful! We will definitely be back!
This local stay is amazingly humble and down to earth with the way they treat their guest. From the first moment you walk in the door and while you are here they treat you like you should be treated as a valued guest. Even a family member. With great local knowledge of events and cool spots to have local fun. They will let you know. I would highly recommend you stay here. Even if you have fur babies with you. They make everyone feel welcomed.
Fantastic place to stay. 24 hour Fitness room. Indoor pool. Complimentary Wi-Fi. The room was clean and the beds were comfortable. This was my third time visiting. The last time was in 2003. Will definitely book again if I go back to Chattanooga.
Last year we visited in January. I love the city and the beautiful collection of small businesses and and enjoyed it. This gorgeous hotel had the best breakfast ever with fruit and croissants. Now sometimes historic can mean dump and although the lobby and building and trolley is great the rooms were moldly and carpets were smelly and rooms were not well insulated. I was on a vaca with my hubs n mom and we moved to Holiday Inn Express to get a get a tiny clean room. I hope it has improved. This is my first harsh review but I had a hard time with this.
My wife and I just stayed at the Read House Hotel. The hotel is located in a great spot. Only a few blocks from several restaurants, shops, and tourists attractions. We stayed in a Junior Suite and it was very nice and clean. Beds are very very comfortable and electronics are updated. We also ate at the Porters Steakhouse located inside the lobby and it is very very good. We ordered room service and it was delivered promptly. Their beer selection was a little subpar but overall very good. Also, the Starbucks inside the hotel is very good. Great experience, will definitely stay here again.
¡The Read House es muy bonita!
This gem has lost its lustre. I've stayed here several times since 2003, and during that time it has just fallen into disrepair. First Sheraton didn't own it. Then they did. Now they don't. And the hotel wants to charge premium prices for what couldn't even pass for shabby chic. On my last two-night visit, I had enough issues that they waived the second night's rate. Unfortunately it did not serve as incentive to return. This year, I made my reservation at Carter Street's best kept secret… the Days Inn across the street from the Read, complete with the unparalleled City Cafe. Don't be fooled by its age. People love it! I did too when I stayed there instead the Read in 2004.
CHECK YOUR BILL! Rooms seem like they are trying to update, but still pretty dated. The renovation isn't done well, there are still holes in the walls where updates are being made and plenty of scratches on the walls where there was paint missing. I was booked here for one night through a 3rd party that paid for my room and pet fee for one night. When I was checking out in the morning the front desk lady tried to charge me for an extra night of parking. She also charged me again for the pet fee, which I did not catch until I saw my bank statement. I am going on to four days of calling a leaving messages to their 'control office' with no response. I am reaching out to my travel agent for additional assistance on the matter.
The Red House historic inn and suites is truly a good hotel. I did enjoy my stay there but the hotel definitely did not make my top 5 hotels list. If you are looking to stay in downtown Chattanooga you can't beat the location of the hotel and the parking is pretty decent too. The room was decent as well but the walls were pretty thin. I stayed on the 10th floor and had a great view of the city. Service was excellent from the front desk. They seems like they would go out of their way to help anyone. Even the valet parking attendants were super nice and they always asked if I need to directions anywhere. The one thing that did impress me about the hotel was when inclement weather rolled in they were extremely flexible in allowing me to stay an extra night and it only cost $99. Overall great hotel.
The rooms were small and dated. The front desk tried to be friendly but there were so many problems they couldn't keep up with it all! Then they over charged my card twice! Took me 4 months to get the over charges taken care of but didn't offer to credit back for all 3 rooms that we had trouble the whole time with. Would never never stay here again or recommend it to anyone.
Don't be fooled when you first enter the main lobby. Yes, the aesthetic is nice, but once you reach your room, the dreamlike state quickly fades as you return to reality. The bathroom is in need of major renovations, as the tub and floor were both cracked. The carpet inside of the room was sticky, and felt strange. Some of the outlets and lamps didn't work either. The biggest disappointment was the fact that neither of the HDMI ports on the back of the television worked properly. My friend and I had planned a horror movie/TV show event for Halloween evening, and this didn't happen because the TV had issues connecting to our Chromecast and PS4. We called Guest Services to see if the problem could be fixed, and were told that the "TVs don't have that capability here because there is no way to change the input. " This was NOT the case, as there was an input button on front of the TV. The feature did not work because the TV in the room was a piece of garbage, and Guest Services had no idea what they were talking about. The only reason I gave two stars instead of one was simply because the hotel was within walking distance of several downtown attractions, and for the attached Starbucks in the lobby area. I will not be staying here ever again, and will be looking at other options the next time I visit Chattanooga.
THE REED HOUSE… HMMM! What can I say, AWESOME! My wife and I stayed at this old nostalgic Hotel for our anniverssary. Loved it! If you don't like the sense of going back in history a bit and feeling, sensing the historic values of this landmark Inn you miss the point. Also, the bed, was simply wonderful, with pillows to match. The room was just right for a couple celebrating 39 years of marriage. The staff was super polite, and the guys at the valet, were not only polite, they could tell how to around the town, the easiest way, who needed a map. The ambience was super. If you are looking for a brand new up scale hotel, this is not your place. However if you are looking for a great stay, great staff, great valet, fair price, great beds/pillows and a history lesson go to the Reed House.
My sister and I stayed here in king suites for two nights because it was one block away from the condo of a relative who is very sick. And we wanted a high end hotel. This looked like the best option. The convenience was wonderful… but that was it. We each had our own king room. Each room was totally different. Mine had a nice big bathroom, hers was extremely small. I had two windows looking into trees, one of her windows looked at a wall. The first thing I noticed was the room felt "damp". When I mentioned it to sis, she said she thought the same thing. At one point I put towel on the floor/carpet and stepped on it to see if it really was wet, and when I picked it up it was not wet… but filthy. The carpet was incredibly nasty and dirty! In fact the entire room felt dirty. The "sofa bed" was stained and the cushions had been turned around upside down to hide it. In both of our rooms. There were two toilet paper rolls in the bathroom, but each had very little toilet paper on them (I hate using "used" rolls at hotels when other guests dirty hands have been all over them. Especially when I am paying a lot). I ran out of toilet paper that night. My sis's room must have been above Porter's steak house because in the morning the smell of cooking (steak? ) was overpowering. REALLY STONG! She got so nauseous from it the second morning she had to leave. SO the final break was when I tried to fix the sheets on my bed that had come loose.
I normally don't leave reviews unless I have a positive experience, but this one is unfortunately necessary. My husband and I booked this hotel for our 1 year wedding anniversary this past weekend with pretty high expectations after reading the reviews. Prior to booking we called ahead and asked a few simple questions about the rooms they offered. Specifically, inquiring about rooms with jetted tubs. We were looking at the King and we were told that we would need to upgrade and get a King Deluxe in order to have a jetted tub. So we paid the extra upgrade fee per night and booked the deluxe room as told. So we arrive and are greeted pleasantly, but somewhat rushed through the welcome process and details because the young lady working was "going to be off work in 2 minutes. " On our reservation we had annotated that it was our anniversary, and then later asked, "well are you celebrating anything? " Small detail, but it adds up. So we retrieve our keys and head on up to our room. Well guess what — — much smaller than we anticipated from reading the room details and NO jetted tub. We called down to the concierge desk and were asked to come back downstairs. So we lug all of our bags back into the elevator and down we went. The manager handled the situation well, but it seems as though we have not been the only victims of the false advertisement offered online under the room details.
I like boutique hotels and was excited to stay at such a historic place. I liked the old lobby. The valet staff was second to none. They made my stay in Chattanooga more convenient. The rooms, however, really need updating. I recognize that the hotel is old but I've been to other historic hotels that had much nicer rooms than this. The rooms were not inviting and we made a point to avoid them during our visit. I particularly disliked being in the tower away from the main lobby. There was no view and the lobby area for this tower was not inviting. Stay in the main tower if you can even though they say this tower is most recently updated. My wife and I wondered if that was in 1982.
I recently stayed here for a night on a "mini vacation" (my current line of work only allows me bite size vacations). Being from Birmingham, I figured Chattanooga (only about 2.5 hours away) would be a nice place to visit. The Read House is an absolutely astonishing hotel with only the friendliest and most hospitable of staff. My room was clean and had the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in at a Hotel. The view from my room was not that great but I didnt expect much seeing as I booked the room a day before my trip. The Pool was fantastic and the location was just as wonderful. My only complaint is that there was no fridge in the room. Other than that 10/10 would stay here again.
The room is cleaner than I expected compared to other reviews I have read. However, probably because it is the old hotel, it smells funny and the carpet felt unclean. But the customer service was excellent, friendly and helpful. $15 for valet parking over night with unlimited time take your car in and out is good for downtown parking. It is not Closer to the river but only take you 5 mins drive. U can take free shuttle to avoid parking costs too.
We were there this past weekend. Took my kids down to the pool Friday night. Apparently someone had gotten sick in the pool and it was supposed to be closed. We found this out from another guest AFTER my kids had gotten in. There was no sign, the pool door was not locked, and there was noone there to prevent us going in. Just had to go pick my son up from school, he was throwing up. He says, "mom, I know why I got sick, remember the pool?! ".
It's a great hotel. My family and I stayed there for Passover weekend and the staff was wonderful. I loved the lobby walking in was beautiful for an old hotel. The bellhops were polite and very helpful, but there is limited parking if you're not parking in front of a meter. Valet parking cost $15 but we didn't pay for the service. We were blessed and found a spot in front of a meter for free on the weekends. The room was small but clean and comfortable the dusting could have been better though. Also, the hallway smelled awful maybe they should have shampooed the carpet. Everytime we left the room we were greeted by that awful smell. Furthermore, the elevator was so old that you could hear it squeaking and coming while waiting on it. Overall, it was a nice hotel with minor problems that the staff should correct.
I'm currently in my room, and have only been in my room for maybe an hour and have already encountered some major hospitality errors. For starters I booked my room for 2 nights then maybe 3 hours later I called back and wanted to add another night so my wife and I could come earlier. We get to check in and I have been charged a $150 no show charge. I do not understand the sense in this. So we moved the information on to a different card. Get checked in, may I add that the guy that was behind the desk had no clue what he was doing, was very rude, and didn't inform on anything unless we asked. We get to our room and notice an second $150 charge was put on the new card. I'm an hour in and I'm completely disgusted with this place. I myself am in the hotel business, I'm a Chief Engineer at the Holiday Inn Express in Orange Beach Florida so I am noticing every lazy, careless, pathetic thing that is going on here. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. I encourage everyone that is reading this review to visit the Holiday Inn Express in Orange Beach and or The Holiday Inn Resort in Pensacola where customer satisfaction and service recovery is number one priority to the staff.
