The Opal is going through some really nice renovations. We stayed there this weekend and had the chance to stay in one of their new rooms. The rooms are really nice and clean and the restrooms are have the best upgrade of all. I definitely look forward to staying at The Opal once again.

It is currently under renovation, but I'd stay here again once it's done. It has what I require from a hotel… I was able to book the exact room I needed and didn't have to cross my fingers I got the right bed size, the bathroom has a good shower, and the TV is in front of the bed and not at some awkward angle. Extra bonuses… Comfy bed, decent pillows, snazzy/modern decorations. Not so great: I got a room with a king bed and it was just big enough. I had no issues, but if you need floor room, watch for the marked size.

Hotel a bit dated but in the center of San Francisco. A certain charm especially the lobby. Taking a room in the inner courtyard is quieter than on the avenue.
Hotel all comfort, US type with free Wi-Fi, large comfortable bed. The advantage is the value for money and the location in downtown San Francisco. Decent breakfast (US).

Love staying at this hotel, wife and I will stay here Everytime we go see a show in the bay. The newly renovated rooms are amazing and the staff is always friendly. Would definitely recommend to a friend.

We stayed here on NYE and had a great time. Loved the new renovations and didn't have any problems. Lots of places to hang things, charge our phones, etc. Beds were comfortable no complaints. There's a diner connected to the hotel which was too expensive IMO but good. The Joint across the street had great divey atmosphere with delicious sandwiches and cheap beer. Walked around the area late night to find some slices of pizza and felt safe. (I currently live in the Bay Area, outsiders may feel otherwise) but we had no concerns.

Stay here Valentines day weekend… it was like the only inexpensive decent hotel we could find for the weekend… not going to lie the area looks a little dicey at night but overall the hotel and hotel staff are good. The hotel is a little on the older side but the rooms are clean and neat. Would repeat again if needed!

Staff super nosy. Like to threaten kicking you out and calling the police for minor things.

Location is close to public transit which is great, lots of shopping and food within 20 minutes walking or transit. My only complaint is that the room we booked online looked much different than the pictures we saw initially. We found out when we got here that we saw pictures of renovated rooms, which our initial room was not. It was easy to upgrade rooms though, so no hassle there.

It was very nice and clean. The beds are very comfortable. My husband drinks lots of coffee and the coffee machine we had in our room didn't work and we called the help desk to let them know and they brought another one when we were ready to leave and check out. Also very concern about parking in the street my sister-in-law got her window broken and her phone was stolen and other things. Not safe to park in the street we put our car in the garage an had to pay $50.00 For one day with the hotel. We are not from here and didn't know how unsafe it is not to park your car in the street we were only here because our father was in the hospital in the burn unit.

Good value for money Very clean and reformed rooms. What you expect from a hotel (no breakfast)

The room was decent and the bed comfortable. The bathroom was very spacious and nice. I liked the walk-in shower, but the water splashed out onto the floor a bit because it's a curtain. They were doing renovations so there were some bright lights outside my window, but the curtains did a pretty good job of blocking it out. Was nice that they had parking available.

They are refurnishing the hotel, so some of the services I expected was not available (like a breakfast room). Room was small, but the beds where good. Maybe not the best area in town, but all in all a good chioce. Might deserve 4 stars when their refresher is done.

What a disappointment. First of all the room: In its juice, period end of the years 60 beginning 70, carpet dirty, bed top that traces the whole history of the hotel and finally we learn that the hotel no longer serves breakfast, although we paid them in advance. On this, the hotel offers royally a compensation of $10 per breakfast, nice just remains to find a place to take it!

Good: Nice service people at the front desk and pretty good location. The diner restaurant downstairs was quite nice. Bad: Super basic, aging facilities. The Wi-Fi was quite moody, and could take forever for the sign in Portal to load in the browser. They also seemed to be doing heavy renovations / reconstruction at the hotel, so forget sleeping after 8am. Finally, the bathroom was ridiculously dark. One tiny light. Could barely see my own face in the mirror or my feet when in the shower. Poor value for money.

Stayed overnight for pride and did not regret staying here. The staff were polite and the rooms were clean. The hotel is a no party hotel so no loud noise or music towards the night. Also no smoking is allowed. Would recommend staying here again.

The front desk was accommodating when I had to call in and make an adjustment to my check in. The rooms were definitely what we paid for, but clean and comfortable enough. King bed, decent sized bath, shampoo, shower gel, bar of soap included. Breakfast was not available though reservation listed it as included, however there is coffee, tea, juices, and water available. The front lobby and rooms smelled heavily if febreeze to probably mask the aged scent from the dated carpet. I would probably stay at the hotel if I were to return to San Francisco only because of the lower rate and location.

The neighborhood is not the best, but the hotel is OK.

Good hotel in central location. The rooms are very small and there is a lot of room. Convenient the Drive-in restaurant accessible from inside even if not affiliated. Quite sad and under sized the room for the breakfasts always full at rush hour.

Positives: Very good location, easy access by public transport (bus), spacious room, good restaurants nearby, breakfast included, possibility to order takeout, laundry available on site, relaxation areas near the reception.
Negatives: Poor breakfast, nothing really hot except drinks (coffee/hot water) ; The gym was very good. According to the staff, cold or cordial reception.
For a 3 star and the price paid the services offered are correct but without more.

This place was great. Charming, cozy, clean and friendly. I see some of the reviews referring to being unsafe around the hotel… but it's really not that bad… and I didn't come here to sit in front of my hotel anyway. Anyway, good place for the price. I'd gladly come back.

Overall, the Opal ended up being a good place to stay for a few nights — no frills, but lots of character! The location on the edge of the Tenderloin is really not as worrisome as I had originally thought — yes, the hotel keeps its doors locked at all times as a precaution, but during the day I did not feel unsafe in the area as a woman alone. Just keep some city smarts about you and know which direction to head from the hotel (ask the staff if you're unsure). After dark, I relied on cars to take me to and from the hotel instead of heading out on foot. More reasonably priced than a lot of other options in San Francisco, free breakfast with generous selection, helpful and friendly staff. The rooms could definitely use an update — the bedding especially felt old and tired, but other than that the decor and age of the building does give it a very unique vibe. Free Wi-Fi is another plus!

The two bed rooms were a bit on the small side, but we managed to squeeze 6 people into one in an emergency for a couple nights. The room was always clean, as was the rest of the hotel. It was a convenient spot to get to the Moscone Convention Center, but the Tenderloin was a bit spooky. Taking the bus (at it's current $1.25 fare) was the best option for our week long stay; getting a Clippar card at Walgreens is a very good idea. This is also a good space to get Uber rides from. Not too terribly far from Fisherman's Wharf, The Castro, Japantown, or Chinatown. Either.

Not sure where the negative reviews are coming from. For the price you pay for a hotel in San Francisco, you get a lot from The Opal. It may be a bit older than some hotels but that just ads to the experience. Free breakfast consists of bagels, toast, waffles, fruit, yogurt, fruit juices and coffee and hot chocolate. As far as location, it's on a busy street and requires guests to use their room keys to get in. I felt safe and secure the entire stay. Easy to get an Uber that takes 10 minutes to get to most attractions you'd want to see. Only 15 minute walk to the BART system. I'd stay at The Opal again in a heart beat!

First of all, I felt extremely unsafe around the hotel, for there were so many 'unstable' looking people who were holding syringes. This kinda deterred my original plan to walk around the city, as my sister did not feel safe at all to get out of the hotel unless we were in the car. Nonetheless, the rooms were okay, the service was okay. It's an adequate choice if you want to stay overnight for a budget. Other than that, I suggest you to pay an extra and get a better hotel. This place racks up; you have to pay 50 for the parking :)

The room was clean and comfortably fit 6. Prime location near a lot of businesses and transit. The front clerk was help full on any of our questions and there was a lot to choose from the continetal breakfast.

I am on a two week tour of traveling. I stopped off in San Francisco for three nights. When looking for a hotel on a budget, location, free Wi-Fi and free breakfast are very important to me. I was on a very popular Street and very centrally located. I was approximately 2 miles from the fisherman's wharf and Chinatown which were two destinations on my list to see while in town. I like to get out and walk the streets so it was perfect for me. It gave me time to explore the city and get a good workout in. The Wi-Fi worked great, the breakfast was amazing and the staff was very friendly. The beds were very comfortable and so were the pillows (I do not like overly soft beds and soft pillows) The toiletries in the bathroom were really nice the soap smells great and the lotion made my skin feel nice, it didn't feel like cheap stuff. I love the old rustic look of the hotel and the rooms are spacious. Conveniently there is a restaurant connected right to the hotel for those late-night munchies. +50 yards to the left of the hotel there is an amazing gym called Studiomix. It was bad ass I took a yoga class there. I would highly recommend this hotel especially if you're on a budget.

The hotel is located centrally. The room is nice, clean and quiet. Wi-Fi works great and they have Mels attached to it.

I love it here. Friendly concierge, superb location. There's a famous restaurant directly opposite. Very convenient in getting public transportation. The room's a lil rustic n I like it as I find it full of soul. Comfy bed, hot shower n clean toilet, n free breakfast provided. Keep it up!

Great location in the middle of San Francisco. Room was quiet and comfortable with free breakfast offered in the morning. Highly recommended if your looking for a taste of the city.

Good location, next to some popular places to eat like Brenda's and Soul Groove. Also next to a theater if you fancy watching a movie. Rooms were nice and clean.

Front door is kept locked from the outside. Have to use room key to get in. To check in you Have to go through Mel's Diner to get to lobby. There isn't any notice that this needs to be done! Elevator from parking lot to lobby is out of order. Have to go up very, very, very, very narrow staircase in order to get to lobby and I'm only an average size guy and my wife is very petite! My wife and I are both handicapped so getting up those stairs was very very very difficult. They do have 2 bellhop carts! HOWEVER, in order to get cart out to car you have to go through Mel's Diner, then return through the Diner to get to lobby. The elevator in lobby to get to top floors was working. Besides the two staff people we met this is the only positive thing about this hotel. By the way, they said they have parking on sight. IT'S NOT FREE! $48 and no security! You could park a block away for $37 a day and no security. Since we stayed 2 nights we paid the $48.

Good service, good breakfast and room comfortable (although a bit outdated). Price high… but for the average SF in August, is more acceptable!

We stayed here for 3 nights. Hotel was a bit outdated. Reminded me of 1940's. At first, it was quaint. By the 3rd night, depressing. Bathroom was updated. Clean, except for the carpet. I wore flip-flops the whole time. It's located on the main drag, but a bad part of town. Very secure, though. The catch was you have to pay $36 per night to park in their lot. They kind of have you here, because you would not want to park on the streets in this area. Staff was friendly enough, not overly. It was within walking distance of Union Square, but like I said, a rough part of town. It was on the main drag for public transportation and that was easy to figure out in order to get around the city. I think I would have paid a little more to be closer to Fisherman's Wharf.

Ok hotel, would do again, but it is less awesome than more expensive options. Just in terms of quality and size of room. It's a fine place to stay, and we had no issues feeling safe while walking around the area.

Best service of any hotel at this price range in the city. Maria, Roberto, Sandra and ALL the staff treated this disabled veteran like a favorite relative and I m extremely grateful. Could not believe how nice they were. Rooms, tv, Internet reception were the best. And room service to boot! Unbelievable. Personally I would recommend The Opal to any travelers through the most beautiful city in the world.

3 stars because the bed/pillow was SOOO uncomfortable, bedroom was small, and the free breakfast had very few choices to choose from. Other then that it was ok.

The overall experience was generally good. It is a well situated hotel, clean and cozy. Breakfast is extremely poor. It contains mostly sweet stuff like muffins, waffles, jam and peanut butter and the real food consists of boiled eggs. No meat, no cheese, no other salty food. Every week the hotel organizes a cheese and wine tasting which lasts one hour. If you come later that hour, the cheese is gone and they don't do a refill which is not nice. They have a nice diner in the hotel, Mel's Diner which serves good food in a typical American atmosphere.

My daughter and I stayed at the Opal on Monday, July 14th. The room was extremely clean, quiet and comfortable. It was conveniently located with Mel's diner restaurant attached to the hotel. The staff was friendly and helpful, the internet quick and the check out easy. We loved it and we're staying again in August.

Hotel located at the edge of the Tenderloin so quite central and not too poorly attended. Room clean but small and dated, Wi — Fi, breakfast buffet with bread, bagels, fruit yogurt, eggs. Staff were friendly with tips for visits or route. A practical and not too expensive address in San Francisco.

Very good and helpful.

Stayed 8/11-8/14. Room was dirty would not step on carpet without socks. Small room and looked like nothing in their pictures. First morning there was a non guest on my floor sleeping/passed out and had to step over him. Clerk did get security quickly. Was not worth the amount to stay there. I would not recommend to anyone. Worst bed and pillows ever.

Kind of older but still very nice. About the best deal you'll find on hotels in San Fran. Staff was very nice and helpful. Centrally located. Close to the "Tenderloin" (a not-so-great area) so be careful which direction you venture out.

A small, inexpensive, clean and tidy. Room small. 10 minutes by bus to Pier or centre. Breakfast quite scarce (boiled eggs, toast, butter), but there are plenty of inexpensive cafes. The window on the street (Van Ness Avenue), but diskofmorta was not. From the Airport (SFO) shuttles. The airport shuttle service ordered (at night). One of our users (and nice breakfast selection) is Russian. Internet is free of charge (Wi-Fi in the lobby and wired). Stayed in the spring of 2010 the year for 3 days.
