It’s in a great location, BUT parking is horrendous, and they way over charge for it. We almost weren’t even able to park there because the spots were angled and so small. It took 10 minutes to get my little compact Ford parked. So frustrating. Also, all the streets around it are closed, so it was a nightmare even just trying to find how to get there. Not worth the money. The rooms are so small we could barely have two suitcases in it. For $300, we could’ve stayed in a really nice place, but unfortunately our other hotel messed up our reservations, and we got stuck picking here last minute.

We stayed here for our first anniversary it was very charming and sweet. I would stay here again.

This Hotel offers a good location with some good price. The reason the low rating is dut the fact that they are not the most transparent when it comes to billing and charges. I have been trying to dispute a charge and spending numerous hours from the time I checked out and after a week still battling this situation. The Hotel claims to have parking, when you check in they just give you a parking card for the underground garage the problem after the check out the charge you $30 dollars per day which were never agreed upon.
I spoke with the front desk and they just didn't remove after check out, and with our busy schedules, you will not argue for 2 hrs on why this was basically a highway robbery. I called several times to say at least 10 times they assured me will be reimbursed until now they just hang up the phone and dont even pick up my calls. This proofs that their ethics and their way to conduct business is not the most appropriate. I was under official travel and bills need to get paid and explanations needed to be made not only spend additional time explaining. The front desk is as inept as it could be, the manager never available to take a call but I am glad that they just charged without my consent only $30 dollars per day and not $100. Please be mindful on setting the expectations on writing and if you are scammed the way I was reported to your credit card and to (BBB) better business bureau.

Excellent location, clean, bright, lovely staff!

Great location in little Italy. Room is clean, ventilation fan is noisy and AC is not cold enough. But major issue is slow and spotty Wi-Fi.

Not to happy. The a/c didn’t work and there was NO lock in the restroom. It make matters worst there was construction on the street right below our room. We were not able to enjoy it at all. I let the guy down stairs know if all of this and was told if I knew how to operate the a/c. I told him I worked in the field. I left him my number and was told that if all did check out that I would be refunded my money but I still haven’t heard back from them. Nice location. Oh my stock Toyota suv didn’t fit so I was asked to park somewhere else?

I give this rating because of the great location. If this place wasn’t where it was, it wouldn’t be worth it. Small (understatement), dated rooms with worn carpets. Thin walls that allow you to hear everythig through the night. Not even a wardrobe available, hang your clothes like airing laundry inside your room. Good stay place if its an emergency or stop over, but so is any other “motor inn”. Can’t call this place a hotel.

A very cute hotel! In such a nice spot located right in little Italy, that had lots of late options for food and dessert. The next morning we woke up to a farmers market right on the street which was a great wake up! There is coffee and pastries in the morning in the lobby/cafe area. The front desk employees are kind and helpful. The room was clean with a really nice shower and a beautiful view! The only downside is the underground parking… it is so small. There are parking spots that should be driving areas. It’s a struggle to park so don’t try if you have a big vehicle or aren’t a strong Parker!

This isn't the cheapest hotel in San Diego, and the rooms aren't big enough for activities… but for this price it's definitely worth a 5 star review. The rooms are clean and modern. There's a small fitness room. You get a free coffee & pastry each morning from the cafe next door. And the location. If you like to be in walking distance of the best cafes, bars, and restaurants in town, then this hotel does not disappoint. The best part is that if you ever get lost, you just follow the sound of loud Italians and you'll be back at your hotel in no time.

Very accommodating. Our flight wasn’t leaving until 9pm and they let us leave our bags there for the day after we checked out. Close to everything. Easy to walk to the ocean and surrounding areas. Loved the free pastries in the morning!

Loved our stay at La Pensione! Within walking distance to just about everything, including tons of great restaurants and bars, as well as tourist attractions like USS Midway, Trolley Tour, etc. We got the underground parking ($20/night), which was an absolute life-saver because parking in this city is less-than-ideal. The coffee shop on the main level of the hotel was also a life-saver (can't function without my morning latte! ). Staff was friendly, and the rooms were clean and modern. They even have a mini-fridge in the room! Highly recommend to anyone considering a vacation in this beautiful city!

Great location in Little Italy — convenient to restaurants and an easy walk to Gaslamp Quarter. The service was less than stellar. We were told we could get early check-in, but our room wasn't available until 3pm. One day the maids took our towels to wash but didn't replace them. Overall, the location and price are worth it.

Just spent the weekend. Awesome boutique hotel near a wonderful location — Little Italy in downtown San Diego. For $150/night you cannot beat the price for the quality of hotel and location. The restaurants and bars are absolutely fabulous! You can rent electric bikes and scooters all over the place which makes it really fun. Don’t do it after getting hammered.

Good service, small rooms but clean.

There is a fair bit of noise in this hotel. The walls are super thin. The staff was very understanding and changed our room two times so that we could sleep. However, the location of this hotel use excellent… right in Little Italy. You can walk easily to the many restaurants and to the harbor to catch the ferry or go to USS Midway Museum.

Very quaint hotel located in the heart of little Italy in San Diego. One of the employees, a labradoodle wheaten terrier was very friendly, so happy to greet each guest. The rooms are a little small just as if you where in France. Many places to go tour and eat near the hotel. A couple of negatives such as there claim your first Uber ride is free, breakfast included is really just coffee or tea and pastry, or the homeless man yelling all night outside our window.

Boutique hotel in the heart of Little Italy. This is a great place to stay if you are visiting San Diego for the first time or just want to be able to stay in a vibrant, walkable neighborhood. It’s a short distance to much of downtown’s sights as well as restaurants, sidewalk cafes, and even a farmer’s market on Saturday. Rooms are modern and very clean, but on the smaller side — that was fine with us as you can’t beat the price and location. You get a coupon for coffee and a pastry at the cafe downstairs, which is connected to the hotel. Friendly and helpful staff. Very nice overall — will be back!

Our hotel experience was great. Location is great, smack in the middle of little Italy with lots of good food around. Rooms are not out of this world amazing but cozy and clean. Only issue we had was because of the location it is noisy until late at night; if that bothers you try to get a room in the upper floors.

Unique hotel right in the center of little Italy! Was better than we expected! Great selection of bars and restaurants! Walking distance to the mss midway, the hop on Hop off, the Amtrak, and the Coaster which we recommend highly! Staff where phenomenal! This is a Boutique Hotel with a beautiful courtyard to enjoy a coffee or drink around a fireplace. So relaxing and warm! A little dated but would book here again!

Absolutely loved it. Location is phenomenal and the staff are as well. Rooms are not the huge rooms you get staying in a mega chain but we didn't expect that either, booked it as it looked to be more of a 'boutique hotel'. Would recommend this place to all my friends and family.

The hotel has amenities and essentials needed for guests with basic furniture. If you get a room here, keep in mind that the sink might be outside the bathroom. The hotel is next to the Metro rail and is only 2 stops from the convention center.

If anyone is looking for a great deal on hotels you can check it out on HotelRaven. Com Booked a room on there and they had the best rates around… Small place with great character. Had corner room which was nice but had windows on 2 sides (nice view of little Italy! ) But no blackout curtain. Felt like I had to turn off lights before getting changed at night otherwise everyone looking up could see me.

Terrible hotel. It was 100+ degrees in October and you can not change the temperature to cool down the room. They control it at the front desk. The person they sent up to my room to check the AC had trouble understanding English. She could not answer any of my questions. Went the lobby to talk to the front desk personnel. The front desk told me that they can not change the temperature (something about a rule). Ended up sweating the entire night in my room (very uncomfortable). Will never stay at this location again. Update: Go instead to the Porto Vista Hotel — It is one street further into Little Italy, a 3.5 star hotel, about the same price for a lot more room, valet for $5 more then La Pensione's parking, friendlier staff, and Air Conditioning (that you can control). This is where I will stay for future trips to San Diego.

The rooms are quaint and nicely decorated. The staff are very friendly and the hotel is within walking distance to great food and beautiful sites.

The room was quite small, but equipped with everything and cozy. In addition, you could see the bay of San Diego from the room. The location in Little Italy is very convenient because you can get to the city quickly, but there are also many small restaurants and other snack shops in the immediate vicinity, including Starbucks and 7-eleven.

Excellent place to arrive, clean, very friendly people, on one side has the Caffe Italia, near the metro station and the sign "Little Italy". Saturdays puts a market of local products one block from there. I would definitely stay there again! I leave a view from room 409!

Hi there people The bathroom door locked on itself but don't worry they have a sure fire solution. Please see the "pin" as this operates as the ONLY mechanism to open these bathrooms for the entire hotel. I was assured by the evening staff that I needed to bring this back to the front desk as soon as possible. Also the bathroom looks a little moldy. Unfortunately, within the first hour of being here the staff has been pretty unprofessional about the situation. Maybe they can redeem themselves but don't bet on it. Room is small as other people have mentioned. Hope this helps!

Nice hotel in Little Italy with close access to great restaurants and the harbor. Rooms are small but clean and nice. Parking is much cheaper than surrounding hotels.

La Pensione is a 3-star hotel that exceeds expectations. The hotel is like a modern travelers hotel in Europe. The layout is essentially a 4-floor square with a central courtyard. A few rooms face inwards, but most face out to different views of San Diego. The two best corner rooms have a full view of Little Italy, but some face the harbor or the airport. The cheapest rooms are small, but highly functional. Our room had a refrigerator, which we have not seen in some more expensive hotels in San Diego. We liked the marble type of tile in the bathroom, the windows that could be opened, and the comfortable bed. They entire hotel was clean. The courtyard was charming, with a fountain and tables with small fire pits in the middle. It was a relaxing place to snack on the free danish and coffee for breakfast from the cafe. There were also stylish modern chairs in the hallways on each floor. Some were outside, which were like sitting on balcony, which the rooms did not have. A travel company posted on Google Maps a picture of rooftop pool, which does not exist. This actually was a picture from another hotel in San Diego that is more expensive. La Pensione does not have a pool. It does have a limited parking garage that has a reasonable per night fee for guests. It does not have any other fees, like a resort fee.

Amazing location! Little Italy is my favorite part of San Diego and you can walk to the ballast point tasting room (a must). Very happy with my stay!

Room was clean, bed and pillows very comfy. A little on the small side but it served it's purpose, inclued a little mini fridge. Bathroom was fine, my husband would have preferred a tub& shower than a shower alone. Only negative was that we could not get the Wi-Fi to work — tried on 3 different phones and a tablet but to no avail. Wouldn't stop us from going back, it's in a great location right in Little Italy. Bonus that they had underground parking (paid) so we could come and go if we pleased. Or, leave the car parked and walk around town (as we did).

I like this hotel. It's in the heart of Little Italy, you can walk everywhere and it's only a couple blocks to the trolley station. My room was basic but cozy. Staff were friendly and accommodating.

You are paying for the view so I hope it's worth it. The rooms are just rooms, nothing special. Pay for parking and it's tiny and difficult to maneuver. Cost is high for so little. The two things you get are views and location. Plan wisely if you decide to stay here. On a positive note, it is a nicer hotel and has accommodating staff.

AC didn't work in first room we checked in to. Fridge was unplugged and leaked all over the floor. We were a huge inconvenience for staff to find a new room for. I had to stand on the chair in the room in order to get ready because it was so high. Bed was hardest bed I've ever slept on.

This hotel is beautiful I love when I start here for school the staff is great they anything and everything they can for you.

The location is prefect. We were right in the middle of all the restaurants and bars. The room rates were very reasonable however the rooms are pretty small. The gaslamp district was about 10 minutes walk and all the other attractions are around 10 or 15 minutes walk from the hotel. I would recommend staying here because of the location and the price.

Pros: Great location. The rooms looked great. We had a nice long balcony. Great blankets and pillows. Cons: the bed/mattress was not that comfortable and we were really close to church bells that rang for way too long and too loud.

Comfy rooms. Very clean. Loved the complimentary coffee and pastry next door in the morning!

Where do I start. First off, this hotel has NO PARKING. The closest lot is located 3 blocks away. The rooms are beyond "cozy, " claustrophobic almost. They're also not the cleanest. The website states free coffee and pastry, however this is only the case if your reservation is made directly through the hotel website. Even so, a voucher from the front desk is necessary in order to receive the coffee and pastry. Lastly, I hate to think that we came across a case of bedbugs, but I sustained multiple unexplained bites during my two night stay. This was my first, and last time staying at this hotel.

Penny is what makes this hotel so special. The staff is great, too! Rooms are very clean.

When we arrived I asked the front desk clerk where their Handicap parking area was. She instructed me to park directly in front of the hotel and actually pointed to the spot. She said that parking there was only allowed for 15 minutes but since I was handicapped and displayed the proper placard I could park there the entire time. The morning of our final stay we woke up and discovered our car had been towed. They had a sign stating an event was taking place on Sunday yet the front desk clerk confirmed I could park there the entire time. Tow bill was $364 of which Marc Hamel was unwilling to help with. Spoke to Manager Marc Hamel regarding his employees screw up and was berated and cussed at. In addition, was awaken at 1:30 am to sounds of yelling right below our third floor window. Looked out to find 3 San Diego PD officers holding a burglary suspect at gunpoint. I have the video. This is not a hotel you want to stay at, especially with this management. Far too many other hotels nearby to take your business where they treat you properly.

Stayed there from Monday until Friday morning. Found a condom under the night stand next to the bed on Thursday morning. JUST PLAIN GROSS! Receptionist told us since we prepaid there's nothing they could do. When we checked out, they told us it was OUR condom. The condom read "LOS ATLAS, " my boyfriend and I were so busy being tourist we were tooo tired to even have sex in the room. Terrible management.

Stayed 3.27 — 3.29 Perfect location if you plan on visiting San Diego. It was my first time visiting the city and this place is centrally located to many shops, restaurants, and the harbor. I would recommend paying the extra money for the bigger room because the normal rooms are quite small. I've never been to Europe and don't think I want to if all the rooms are this small. This is no shade to the Hotel because I did enjoy my stay, I just need more space. Other than that I would stay at this establishment again if I'm in SD.

My girlfriend and I stayed there for The 2014 New Year. This was our returning visit. We loved this hotel. This hotel is located right in the middle of everything we wanted to do. It was walking distance to Seaport Village, Horton Plaza, Gaslamp District etc. The restaurants around are amazing. The dog, Penny, in the lobby is adorable. Rosa was more than welcoming and was very happy to help us with all our room amenities. We will be going back.

This is such a cute little place! The rooms are gorgeous and everything is brand new. It feels very European in many ways. Including the size of the rooms, which is small. However, the location is perfect right in the middle of Little Italy. The Farmer's market takes place fright out front on Saturday (maybe it was Sunday? ) mornings and we really enjoyed this. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Good Location The location is very nice and the staff are very friendly. Not so near to the main city attractions but you can reach quite everything by an 1/2 an hour walk. Despite of some info we red on Lonelyplanet and online, there's the air conditioning but no need when we were there (Sept 25th and 26th). — — — — — — — beautiful structure in a very nice, clean and inexpensive place. The staff is very nice, although you are not in the center (Gaslamp and the most interesting parts are more to the south) you most reach almost everything on foot in no more than half an hour. Despite Lonelyplanet and other reviews say no, we found the air conditioning in the room but it never served. We were there on the 25th and 26/9/11.
