A good place to stop and recharge in Madrid while you're looking around the city. There are several shops and cafes with great outdoor seating and relaxing views. I was able to stop here, slow down, and really enjoy the feel and culture of Madrid.

If you want to relax and people watch from those of all nations, then his is the place to be. Or even if you want to see Spanish life in full motion, go here at night because the lights are on and street performers are out. Sip a chilled sangria or just meander around the plaza. The color is rich and the atmosphere is alive. This is a must if you go to or through Madrid.

Historical location in Madrid that comes alive especially in Christmas but is usually a nice place to visit any time of the year. It's famous for it's cuttlefish sandwich, you can't miss it. It's also especially beautiful place after the sunset.

Historical spot — touristy today Having stayed a stone's throw away at the nearby Hotel Plaza Mayor we got to see a fair bit of the plaza itself. Today the perimeter is lined with restaurants, cafes and gift shops. Some of the restaurants' seating bleeds into the plaza proper. In fact that is part of the appeal; diners sitting outdoors in the evening, enjoying dinner and being entertained by street musicians. This venue is rich in history. To fully appreciate what you are seeing I recommend reading up a little about it before you visit — there is no shortage of information online or there is the wonderful Rick Steve's guidebook to Spain. The plaza is one of the stops on one of the Madrid walking tours outlined in his guidebook. Many sites of historical significance in Spain have been maintained as such; this is not one of them. Very commercialized. As a place to look around it should not take you more that 10-15 mins. If you are enjoying the atmosphere and you can always linger, soak in the sights and people-watch by dining at one of the many restaurants. Be wary — it can get pricey.

Awesome! It is impressive to see such a plaza and know the history behind the buildings. There are usually events such as outdoor movies, musicians, costumed characters to take photos. Meeting point madrid no doubt. On the ground floor of the buildings across the plaza can be found in local restaurants.

Very nice, great for pics. There's a wee love lock for padlocks. I would ask for prices before you eat in the square because they rip you off… 2 streets away you can get tapas for €1 a dish so be wise.

A nice place to be. In it's center is a state of Philippe III. The restaurants on the plaza are quite expensive compared to others around, but the atmosphere is nice. On hot days most restaurants have a refreshing humidifier.

Just love walking around the Plaza Mayor or just sitting and people watching. They have a lot of restaurants and little shops. The only thing is lots of vendors in your face and coming around while you are eating trying to sell you stuff. It takes away the enjoyment of relaxing and enjoying your stay there. Also, which is very sad, lots of homeless people begging everywhere.

Truly a beautiful square and although it's very touristy it's not that bad compared to other famous squares. There are the occasional touts selling services or music, but all in all it's a must while visiting Madrid. The cafes and restaurants around the square are yours to visit at your own risk. Everything is overpriced and of lower quality but still it can be worth it to enjoy the view.

An awesome city centre which attracts happy crowds on a nightly basis. Awesome architecture, two perfect fountains, a Royal Statue and countless performers and happy people. Grab a coffee or ice cream and enjoy time at the Plaza any night of the week.

Wonderful beautiful place with cafes, restaurants and portrait draughtspeople. There are calamari buns in the side alley.

It is a charming place for its architecture, the tourist business there. The bars and tapas. The ancient archways such as the Cutlers, the caves of Luis Candelas, Inns typical. At Christmas there is an atmosphere that is very beautiful for children and for all. Highly Recommended in all seasons of the year.

Restaurants (7/10) : One of the things that I really love about this location was the restaurants. It has a large variety of restaurants all around the plaza. Please note that the prices are definitely above average. So if you're on a strict budget, try to avoid eating at any of these places. Entertainment (7/10) : I personally love street performers. In this Plaza we were able to see performers that entertain not only kids but myself as well. Be prepare to hand a few euros to the performers. Ambient (9/10) : The atmosphere for Madrid in general is welcoming and heart warming. For Plaza Mayor, the ambient is remarkable in the sense that you feel at home, welcome, and heart warming. Having a mix of live music, street performers, people talking, birds, and restaurants, it is the place to be in.

Food was quite ok. Too expensive for what was on offer. For Madrid, too. There are better ones there. The service mediocre. A smile would do well once in a time.

Probably the largest and most beautiful square in Madrid. In the same style, it has nothing to envy to "our" Place des Vosges in Paris. Splendid buildings, very lively. Too touristy too…

Beautiful not to Representative plaza of Madrid, in the heart of its city center. Rich in history, it amazes you when you see it coming from a sleeper and you find yourself in front of its grandeur. Recommended!

You cannot visit Madrid without seeing this beautiful meeting spot. While I drink and eat typically at non-tourist places, you should at least have a Cafe con leche here before moving on to more local, inexpensive places (which are in abundance in Madrid). Also take a free tour from a local — I recommend Sebastian from Sandeman's Tours. Enjoy this magnificent city!

Very average plaza, nothing much to see. The building surrounding it was cool and there are lots of shops and restaurants nearby. Spent maybe 15 minutes here. Avoid taking photos with random people on the street who are stressed up, they ask for money.

In absolute the most beautiful and fascinating square in Madrid, peccto that in the pre-Christmas period is literally filled by the banks of Christmas merchandise that prevents asaporarne the atmosphere… definitely Spanish. Suggersco to go to the rest… when it's empty.

Picturesque place in Madrid with a lot of history. I highly recommend doing some of the guided tours around the area to discover some of their secrets or amazing stories. At night her beauty changes completely. But do not forget that we are in the most tourist center of the city, keep your belongings well guarded and better if you take them forward to avoid pulling, remember that the more people, the more cacos will try to make their August.

A very busy and crowded square in the centre of Madrid. Surrounded around the perimeter by buildings with arches. In the center of the square on the pedestal stands a bronze equestrian sculpture of King Philip III.

Nice plaza and the oldest buildings in Madrid. But don't rent a condo in the plaza if you expect to sleep, we'll during any festival type event. It's always busy and noisy at all hours of the night.

The square is huge and it's impressive but lacks the beauty of the plazas in spain. Only the tremendous dimensions makes it special. Prices are possibly the highest in Spain. If you want to eat well (and three times cheaper) then don't go to the plaza.

Square emblematic of Madrid, capital of Spain. Famous both for its architecture as for its food. Who has gone there and has been able to resist a snack of squid? Few. The only downside, as at the end in all the places where are many tourists, is that there is to be careful with the pickpockets.

One of the symbols of the city, this large porticoed square on all sides presents a very harmonious appearance as a whole. Too bad it is almost always overrun by markets, small tables, houses and any other kind of mercantile activity. Very nice House of the Panaderia with the façade frescoed. Less the house of the Carniceria in front.

We were in the Christmas markets and the truth is that there are a great deal. If you are looking for something for you to Bethlehem is perfect you can not miss it. Otherwise, the square is great to visit when there are no jobs. There you will find the famous snacks of squid of Madrid.

Nearest metro station: SOL and OPERA. *I recommend to visit the Mercado de San Miguel, very close to the Plaza mayor.

We loved plaza Mayor. It is a phenomenal place to get together and see events, merchants, street performers and have great food along the edges. It's 4 corners lead to other streets in Madrid and stretch to different shoppes, cafes, and bars. We loved this experience. We always come back no matter what when in Madrid.

Perhaps the most famous square in Madrid. Meeting Centre for many organized tours. Overcrowded during festive periods. Venue of events, such as markets during the Christmas season. Security present almost 24/7

There is usually painters doing portraits to the people. They are pretty good. It is rectangular and there are many terraces of bars, restaurants, sites, where to eat and drink. I think that they are expensive. However, in the calle Postas (it is very close to the Plaza mayor) to the number 6 can be purchased at a store called the Museum of Ham sandwiches cheese and serrano ham for 1 euro, and tenderloin for a euro and a half. I don't think are high prices and to me in particular I know very well. I highly recommend it. In this same store you can also buy the typical snacks of squid for 2.80 euros. In the festivities of San Isidro (15 of may) there will be musical performances in the Plaza mayor.

The place is beautiful but the Christmas market is totally unworthy with objects 100% Made in China. Nothing handmade from Spain! A real disappointment!

La Plaza Mayor is the main square of Madrid, surrounded by a variety of specialty shops, for the lively location just a 1-minute walk to the famous Churrería shop.

Full of rich atmosphere and history this is an amazing place to visit. The shops and restaurants are also great. On Sundays there is an open air coin and antiques market, specialising in rare, collectable coins, watches, writing instruments, paintings and a vast array of antiques. A Great place to stop by while traveling Madrid. After sunset, that’s when people come to enjoy their dinner. Beautiful place for sure.

Founded in 1620, it is the most glorious era of the Habsburg dynasty.
The most striking thing about the square is the horse-riding statue of King Philipe, while a fine mural can be seen in a bakery on the side of the square. Built during the Habsburg reign. Its shape is rectangular, 129 meters long, 94 meters wide, surrounded by three-storey residential buildings, there are 237 facing the square balcony. It has a total of 9 entrances. The square was completely unrecognizable in a fire in 1790, and the Grand Square now in front of us was redesigned by Huan De Vilanueva Juan de Villanueva. In this disaster, the bakery house (Casa de la Panadería) survived, the bakery house is the main building of the square front façade painted with beautiful wet murals, fairy tales, flowers, Madrid historical figures are vivid and impressive. Good space, worth visiting. Have a look further down beyond the square and you are in the excellent tapas/bar area… Start at the Square if you wish but walk down into the tapas area.

One of the touristy "must see" but there is not very much to see or do. Guess if you have a guide who can tell about this square, you might get a better picture. Overall it's a nice place filled with tourists, street artists and outside cafes.

Its necessary to visit, its historic and sometimes if your lucky you can see artitstic events or interventions. Last time I went, there was a patch of grass in the middle of Plaza Mayor. The plaza was full but everyone was sitting and enjoying the grass.

When in Madrid, do stop by Plaza Mayor. It is centrally located. Come in the day and at night. The vibes vary. During the day, you will see tourists taking in the sights and taking photos. At night, you will see Families, Couples and Groups just spending time together. Be aware there are lots of street vendors selling trinkets, the locals will warn you to watch your belongings. There are also several performers. We went in June and the Plaza can get crowded but not for long periods at a time. Patience is a virtue in famous places such as this. There are several restaurants and the San Miguel Market (well known for its tapas) is a two minute walk from it. There are also several shops to look for various souvenirs and local products.

A nice place to swing by on your way to other sights in the city. I don't know if this is year round but when I was there, they had botellones there at night. Go buy some wine or beer and a snack while your at it. Bring your friends and sit down and join a large group of locals just enjoying each other's company late at night.

Nice but nothing major to explore or special. During summer, don't go there from noon to 4pm (unless you stay in one of the restaurants there), it's really hot… It's a square surrounded with nice red buildings.

Iconic square in Madrid. Hyper-touristy. But, still, beautiful and worth the visit. Lots of restaurants, stores and bars all around. Several stores for stamp and coin collectors.

We saw this early in the morning and it was lovely and quiet — none of the hustle and bustle you would expect. Really is lovely — I highly recommend if you have time to sit at a cafe at the Plaza and people-watch.

The plaza includes average restaurants with high prices and bad service (basically what you would expect in any other European plaza). But you can still sit for a coffee or a drink. The peripheral area of the plaza actually includes some nice shops and cafes. But the place has its own vibe, which is nice in some ways.

In this review I can not I can not be objective because Madrid is my city. For me, the prettiest plaza bonita. If you know the history that was in this plaza you will seem more impressive. Fire, running of the bulls, the beatification of San Isidro, autos-de-fe, public executions. Exit or enter through the Arco de los Cuchilleros, one of the 10 entrances of the square (southwest corner of the square)

Intrusive Restaurant Rufer. Otherwise, very nice and a must-see for any visitor to Madrid.

Another emblematic place of MADRID. City and sheltered pleasantly. That Square is historic. The one we toured two days. We had lunch in it. A luxury.

Has lots of restaurants. Perfect atmosphere and food. Easy to access and servers can speak English. I recommend getting paella or steak here.

The area, much better than the neighbor, is Puerta del Sol. Nice architecture and color gamma. But there's a spoon of tarcrete. Wherever you look, there are colorful, vivid dumpsters that really spoil the view. Although it's for those who do the photo.

Like in all country's capital has architectural Marvel's… so has Spain. The Plaza Mayor is at its best during early sunrise and dusk. It's hue changes with change in position of sun. Stunning beauty. A must visit place for all first timers. Plenty of food joints from local to international would messemerize you. Never get into the Words of Wonder of agents of restaurants who promises discount on food specifically Spain's traditional food fiesta. Let Google and your heart and taste buds decide with the budget you have. Food prices are higher here.

As every capital, the mais square is sways stunning. This in particular is full of restaurant (honest prices in my opinion). Also, because it's central is easy to go anywhere from there. Tip: try those very cheap sandwich at the Museo del Ramon restaurant.

Nice location in Madrid. To take a "relaxing cup of café con leche" is very good. However, it is expensive and a little bit ill-kept, from my point of view. It could be better.

In Spain each city has a Plaza Mayor, Madrid this is the most famous, the small shops are selling Souvenirs, many open-air bars, cafes. Full of tourists, bustling in.

You can't come to Madrid and not visit it.

Tourist trap! To a lot of Restaurants without quality.

Fantastic ambiance… Have yourself some overpriced tapas — I recommend gambas al ajillo, chorizo iberico, croquetas and calamari!

Center a must if you visit Madrid. Asomatè by the office of tourism and then… take a walk around, approach the center and take a picture of yourself with Philip II on horseback, and after… enjoy a cafe con leche in a terrace, a beer in one of their bars, trees, if you're hungry with the bicata is squid, and if it is Sunday, market filatèlico and numismàtico.
