Very famous historical place. Very popular nowdays. That's the reason this place is always busy. There is always a lot of tourist with their cameras, flashes, group guides, etc. I was a bit surprised because there was a lot of homeless people sleeping in their boxes between plaza and other streets around it. Beautiful place, with seeing.

Interesting all that is on the square and next to it. On the first floors of the houses surrounding the square, there are many restaurants, shops and information center. They also sell old coins and stamps.

If you want to relax and people watch from those of all nations, then his is the place to be. Or even if you want to see Spanish life in full motion, go here at night because the lights are on and street performers are out. Sip a chilled sangria or just meander around the plaza. The color is rich and the atmosphere is alive. This is a must if you go to or through Madrid.

A beautiful place that has been turned into a hotbed of expensive cafes without any quality. Here and in the area is really nice to walk, such a small Austria in Madrid. The abundance of homeless people is certainly not very pleasant, but it is present.

Historical spot — touristy today Having stayed a stone's throw away at the nearby Hotel Plaza Mayor we got to see a fair bit of the plaza itself. Today the perimeter is lined with restaurants, cafes and gift shops. Some of the restaurants' seating bleeds into the plaza proper. In fact that is part of the appeal; diners sitting outdoors in the evening, enjoying dinner and being entertained by street musicians. This venue is rich in history. To fully appreciate what you are seeing I recommend reading up a little about it before you visit — there is no shortage of information online or there is the wonderful Rick Steve's guidebook to Spain. The plaza is one of the stops on one of the Madrid walking tours outlined in his guidebook. Many sites of historical significance in Spain have been maintained as such; this is not one of them. Very commercialized. As a place to look around it should not take you more that 10-15 mins. If you are enjoying the atmosphere and you can always linger, soak in the sights and people-watch by dining at one of the many restaurants. Be wary — it can get pricey.

Italians who come for the first time in Madrid, this is a fundamental step of the visit of the city, being the most ancient and characteristic square. The first time you enter from one of the doors you can stay displaced in the face of such majesty. It is beautiful and charming, a place that you will not forget easily. I recommend you to visit it even under Christmas, you will live a magical atmosphere.

Typical square in the center of Madrid with rooms of all kinds, both for the purchase of souvenirs and to make a snack. Suitable place for a nice walk and some photos though lacking in major artistic attractions. I recommend a lot for a quick meal or an aperitif.

The place is very pretty but watch out for restaurants not always cheap. It's better to get away in the little streets.

The town Hall Square is lined with cafes and restaurants that spread their terraces in the sun. The prices of traditional dishes are all more or less synchronised to avoid competing. This is not the most romantic or glamorous place in Madrid but it remains a classic place to meet in Madrid and central enough to decide then what to do.

One of the main squares in Madrid. The story that has come to be: there were bullfighting, and execution, and executions in this square. Here stood the Zewaki, here from these balconies watched the Dons and the Donna, and from that-the king's robes. And now it is quite peaceful, even a nice square. :-)

Very beautiful square. Calamari sandwich is a classic and you can join free walking tours in the mornings. Look for the red umbrellas, they're very good for English speakers.

It's a very nice place. In the arcades there are many bars and cafes although the prices are somewhat high. You have to watch that they do not rob you because depending on the tourist season there is a lot of picaresque loose by the square. The best thing is to go in, take the picture and go.

Probably one of the couple of Madrid's attractions. And there are so few of them. But the city itself is beautiful.

Always great place to visit. Full of tourists from any part of the world, as well as Spaniards who like to visit. Restaurants around you where you can enjoy any type of gastronomy. In addition to being very well connected.

I loved it. There are no other words. I went to a bistro that accounted for the place and it was the best of all that I could do during my stay. The server was really nice and nice (he even took a picture for us all on it). He was funny and smiling and I could notice that it was like that even in the nearby bistros. This place is really a warm place. I advise you to go in the evening it is really beautiful when it is lit and the atmosphere is friendly it is typically Spanish: warm, relaxed…

Very nice place obviously but all the restaurants are not top (take the time to choose), and you get collar by the servers which is not always nice.
Nevertheless, it is a central point of Madrid and to have a coffee in the sun is nice.

Small tip: Always have a warm scarf ready in these seasons. Madrid is about 600 meters high.

Nice historical location with a history of brutality. Gives you feeling of being there in a history and watch those who were punished publicly ar this place in old times. Nice shopping options for souvenirs and also great food options. Interesting to watch people selling stuff on the street which is illegal and when police arrive on the horses, how quickly they wrap that and leave only to return when police is gone. Overall nice place to visit.

Very characteristic square. Not very vast and surrounded on all four sides by valuable constructions. In the center there is a statue of a king on horseback, a meeting place for the Madrid (we are under the balls of the horse). Many places but maybe too touristy.

A walk in the Plaza Mayor in Semana Santa. Lucky it was a sunny day, and there was the usual fuss about the hour. I love this square with its buildings that "smell" medieval, with the restaurants with its varied offers, I would have liked to see some Easter Bunny, people dressed as at the time, I would recommend that there be at least one restaurant where the waiters view Medieval fashion. It would be in unison with the site. It is essential to visit the Madrid Pass.

A nice and worth seeing place. You should treat yourself to an overpriced coffee or an expensive beer, the atmosphere is great. During the Semana Santa, however, there are few Madrilènes live, who are smart and go to the country. So much pickpockets and beggars as in Frankfurt city too, but a lot more police and that does not tolerate a cheeky flap. The Plaza Mayor is part of the obligatory programme. The restaurants are expensive here, but in the side streets there are cheaper ways to eat.

A tourist site for sure, but enjoyable none the less. You can definitely people watch here. I did not try any of the restaurants, but was there during Christmas time so I checked out the market they had set up in the Plaza. I liked all of the stands they had set up and the decorations were really nice especially when lit at night. Performers were there as well entertaining the crowd.

Great tourist site of Madrid. It is a square that apparently has nothing but has a great history, many restaurants, painters, people trying to entertain people with their skills and a good atmosphere. Recommendation: Buy a squid sandwich and eat it sitting on the floor of the square while it gives you the sun in the face.

The square is very beautiful… Madrid is very beautiful… but know Italian friends that it is difficult to communicate CN people, do not know nor speak or understand English… clearly L. Italian do not even want to understand so it is difficult to communicate cn them… discouraged! Choose another.

Worth seeing in Madrid. Full of tourists and abzockergangs. Caution. Food in the surrounding restaurants very very expensive. Beer 7 Euro. Still a nice place to watch.

It is a square of Madrid located in the center of the city not far from Puerta del Sol with which you contends the title of Main square. I have to say that from Milanese which I am I did not find it very exciting as very small compared to what I expected to see from the pictures and not particularly exciting.

It is a very iconic and noisy place at all times. But someone here was just a lake.

The essential place of Madrid. The frescoes on the facade of the town hall calm the detour. This is also the place of the restaurants in mass tourism (cheap and not Folichon) The Ham Museum is to see!

The surrounding businesses are expensive, taste is general, not very recommended. It's a historic landmark.

Large shopping square and full of restaurants. There is a large and beautiful bronze statue in the middle. On benches you can see padlocks left by lovers.
It reminds me of the place of the capitol of Toulouse.

Nice place to sit in the sun with all of the other tourists having a meal or beer. As for the square itself, not as grand as many others. But worth a visit, I suppose.

The largest and oldest square in Madrid where the old Town Hall became the tourist office. Surrounded by restaurants and cafes where you can taste the "bocadillos" small sandwiches to the calamari, it is an essential place of the capital. The enfroit is really beautiful!

C is to be seen because it is a central place of Madrid where it moves. But not very interesting at the architecture level, the prices for drinking or eating are high and many sellers at the sly.
A tourist place.

Wonderful area to sit and relax with fun Street style entertainment. Plenty of places to eat and drink although a little bit more expensive than elsewhere. We even got to watch a wedding and as it is sheltered we sat in polo shirts on a February day that started at at — 2°. A must visit.

I was a day in which there were many posts, people in disguise, live music, although being up to the top of people was all very clean. I do not know how it will be a normal day, but that in particular very well assembled. Above all I emphasize that it was fairly clean and apparently well organized. It's a good place for these things.

Surrounded by buildings, restaurants and souvenir shops, the square itself is not large, probably more than the high school playground, the surrounding environment generally. The photo index is not high.

It was a nice place and great for pictures, but it was not the cleanest place I've been to. There was a Starbucks there and it was very nice. I really liked Plaza Mayor. (There was some glass on the ground but there are people there that were cleaning it so that's not much of a problem. )

They are two steps away, such as the Mercado of San Miguel and Puerta del Sol.

As it is around it is full of restaurants where you can try typical dishes of Madrid and Spanish culture.

You can look at it when you're nearby, but at the end of the day it's just a plaza like any other. Nothing out of the ordinary, nothing really impressive but when you're there — why not?

Nice place. It tends to be very crowded and there is a lot of atmosphere, it is also usual to see street artists that although most are pretty crappy, there is always some one very original and fun. The restaurants that are in this place are not too advisable as the service is usually very slow by the large number of customers.

As a tourist I have been on other occasions and there is always something new that invites us to be in this meeting place. However, these days I have been saddened to see how they have neglected some corridors. There is rubbish and in some remodelings that are taking place is careless is obvious, but could put something to disguise, for example a canvas with a landscape or facade that better view. Either way that's my perception but they can't stop going to meet and eat some skewer, sandwich, a glass of wine or a beer.

It has become an emblematic place in Madrid… magnificent atmosphere for all ages… good gastronomic offer… and over pleasant area with attractive tourist places… In short, a place to visit at any time…

Totally different vibe when going to Plaza Mayor during day time and in the evening. I recommend checking out the Square both day time and night time. Different crowds. Lots of shops and restaurants nearby. From the square you can walk to San Miguel market. I think it was less than 10 mins.

Everything has become more beautiful, a Bocata de calamari should be needed.

A very nice place in the centre of Madrid. However, I cannot fully understand the hype. You will find numerous restaurants and cafes, which invite you to a pleasurable meal. The selection is quite large. Mainly because of its history, this place is still one of the most visited in Madrid. Definitely worth a visit:)

It's a magical place. In the same moment that I penetrate through any of its doors, I travel in an instant to another time, to a place, perhaps, without time. Beautiful, harmonic, beautiful, container… That's the square. A place of encounter with the past, present and future. A hug of cultures with rubbings of eyes and caresses of smiles. A universal place where everything is possible and dreams play, cheerful, without ties.

A very busy and crowded square in the centre of Madrid. Surrounded around the perimeter by buildings with arches. In the center of the square on the pedestal stands a bronze equestrian sculpture of King Philip III.

Much visited place with lots of possibilities to eat and enjoy. Madrid is simply beautiful and worth seeing.

You can not stop if you go to the center of Madrid.
At Christmas The typical Christmas articles stalls.
And the rest of the year you have to go and eat a squid sandwich, see the old coins of the stalls, walk through Cava Baja, see the Spiderman with a kilo of more.

We loved plaza Mayor. It is a phenomenal place to get together and see events, merchants, street performers and have great food along the edges. It's 4 corners lead to other streets in Madrid and stretch to different shoppes, cafes, and bars. We loved this experience. We always come back no matter what when in Madrid.

There are often painters making portraits of people. They're pretty good.
It is rectangular and the terraces of bars, restaurants, places to eat and drink abound. I think they're expensive. However, in Calle Postas (it is very close to Plaza Mayor) to number 6 can be purchased in a store called Ham Museum cheese sandwiches and Serrano ham for 1 euro and loin for a euro and a half. I do not think they are high prices and I specifically know very well. I recommend it.
In this same shop you can also buy the typical squid sandwiches for 2, 80 euros.
In the Fiestas de San Isidro (May 15) there are musical performances in the Plaza Mayor.

Beautiful place. Obviously overcrowded by any festive date. Prices are expensive to pay for being in that place. It is preferable to take what is desired in annexed places. The combination of restoration and trade is very entertaining. Don't forget to order a squid sandwich with a beer. Delicious.

Located in the heart of Madrid, it is a very popular place for tourists, attracted by its rectangular shape, the equestrian statue, its arcades and the impressive facades.
It is a few steps away from Puerta del Sol, and is one of the most important tourist centers in the city.
Crowded with terraces of bars and restaurants (high prices and not recommended), is an essential visit.
Nearest Metro stop: SOL * I recommend visiting San Miguel Market, very close to Plaza Mayor.

I marked this place with five stars, because we had great news there. In general, a large spacious area, I like that it is surrounded by houses, you feel secluded in a big place.

It's a little touristy and crowded for me. During the time we were there they were putting together the holiday market so the middle was completely blocked off. There was a little too much happening with the street performer and characters but I'd imagine ordinarily it would be cool.

One can not stop going, it is the historic center of Madrid and its daily life is exciting. Take it easy and walk around observing every detail, every now and then it's good to look up. Architecture catches. Rest in a good tapas bar or go to the market for fresh produce to be consumed on site. There are variants and all of them are attractive.

This place is recommended on all sides, I was disappointed! Sheer souvenirs and kitsch. Considering how much blood has flowed there… by the Spanish Inquisition and not just… no thanks.

A packed square of people at all times! A must see. Recommend the stop in the rooms and restaurants that characterize the porticoes: too touristy, not spotless and with very high prices compared to the quality offered.

A large square surrounded by tapas bars, restaurants, and other food vendors on all sides. Very busy well into the night. Lots of small food outlets surrounds the area that may offer a wider selection if it doesn't have what you want.

Very beautiful and colourful place! It's a must-see in Madrid. You have some terrasses where you can have a drink. However, the facades are sober: don't expect to see detailed decorations.

Someone called it a huge backyard. As a definition it seems a little reductive. Although it is not the most beautiful Plaza Mayor of Spain it has its own charm. To see.
