The location is great. Old-style hotel with pool and 24/7 service. The breakfast is just good but nothing 5 stars. The rooms are as good as a simple hotel. We got an extra bed as we were 3 and had to pay extra fee for for that. Pick up and drop off to and from airport is enjoyable though :)

Stayed here for 4 nights. It was one of the best hotels. Nice room and bed, breakfast and swimming pool. Only two things I didn't like the pillows in my room and no ventilation in bathroom so if you have a hot shower or bath it gets really hot n steamy… Other than that, great hotel. Thanks!

Located in prime location of Kathmandu. Big area. Old, Rana style, lavish buildings. Been there for a wedding reception. Service seems satisfactory.

My daughter booked this hotel for me for her wedding. Her wedding was there and it was a great experience. Everyone was very helpful and made sure we we’re comfortable. If there was anything we needed they were able to help. They were able to get us taxis when we needed them.

We enjoyed the quiet oasis and old world charm that Hotel Shanker is within the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu. To turn off the street and into the hotel area was an ahh! feeling. Appreciated the elegant ambiance of the building and especially the outdoor gardens and swimming pool. The room was large and quiet. The staff was also very helpful and went out of their way to make our visit special. Thank you!

The outside and the entrance hall are really beautiful. Inside it is a little dark. Also our Suite was quite dark. But it was really big and comfortable. The room needs some refurbishments. Bathroom is quite old.

This hotel is one of the best in the area. Customer and breakfast services are great. It’s also located near the Thamel market which attracts a lot of tourists.

Amazingly full in its character. As I heard it used to be some Royal office before. Got huge garden are with a nice swimming pool (not heated though). Very near to Thamel. Very helpful staffs. Food is good. Recommended to ppl who love to stay in a place with a character!

We are happy that the front desk is open again and we enjoy the staff and the atmosphere in this hotel we always stay at when we visit Kathmandu. It means 2-3 times every year. We love the breakfast and the dinner. WE prefer to eat in hotel instead of going out to eat.

Hotel Shanker is for sure one of the best hotels to stay in when you're in Kathmandu. Typical former palace from the Rana dynasty, with very helpful staff, delicious food and luxury rooms. Don't forget to enjoy the pool bar, the swimming pool and the Kunti bar.

Unfortunately the restaurant was not possible to make changes to the dishes according to the need of the customer.

Kathmandu is dirty, dusty, noisy busy and tiring. This hotel is an oasis of calm and peace; clean, gentle, polite and restful. I was only here two nights, was most unwell for one of them and didn’t get to use the pool or do anything much, but the staff were so courteous and the whole place had a lovely helpful atmosphere. Its well placed to access everything, and good value I would say. This hotel is beautiful. Previously a palace. Unique furniture. We enjoyed room service and the spa and found both to be wonderful. Grounds and pool are lovely. The staff is so warm and friendly.

We stayed at Shankar for 7 days. This hotel was truly a beautiful oasis in the middle of a bustling city. From the street you would never imagine such a place is just beyond the wall. The location is walkable to the touristy area and a short cab ride from many temples and the airport. There are also many bars and restaurants just outside the gate. The grounds were beautiful and the staff were very friendly. The breakfast includes both western and Nawari dishes (and worth purchasing with your room as breakfast may be unavailable outside the hotel if you’re experiencing jet lag or used to waking up around 7:00) and the on site restaurant had a large menu with consistently tasty meals. We will absolutely stay here during our next trip to Nepal. The hotel boasts old world charm and modern luxury and its right on point. It truly feels like something out of a Wes Anderson movie. Can’t wait to come back!

Huge complex off of one of the main streets just outside of the tourist zone. It is a bit of an oasis. The main lobby has been redone and the dining facilities are nice. The one negative is the room size. It was akin to a cheaper hotel in NYC. Very small. The people working there were lovely.

Property is very nice, good location, Indian food could have been more, the portion served is smaller than expected, food taste was average, we had 3 dinners but could not remember any dish to be written here. Hotel Shankar need to seriously to workout on the Taste and Portions served. We has bad experience with Travel Desk, Though the Travel Desk Manager some how arranged the car for sigh Seeing but the driver misguided us and took us where he gets a commission. We were charged 7000 NRS for 3 point of interest.

Feel good place, nice staff, great swimming pool, good net and free Wi-Fi with all around accessibility… Almost everything that a good hotel should have…

A colonial style bullding. Friendly service and clean. The food is okay. Currently undergoing renovation and at this time of year hosts wedding parties almost every night, so can get a little noisy.

Rooms are very busy and it is currently being renovated everywhere. Very winded, but very nice and helpful staff. A little overpriced as a 4-star hotel.

Yes its historic, yes it was a palace. This place updated only a few rooms, by that I mean their furniture. Rooms have mold. Smells like mold everywhere, one of our bathrooms flooded. We did not get the rooms wr had asked for. It was a disaster. Only good thing was they returned all out money with no penalty fee when we desided to go after just 1 night.

The staff were wonderful — so helpful and friendly. The breakfast was excellent. The size of the standard rooms varied lots and unfortunately we had a smaller room without a sofa with a bad view and there were some marks/wear in the bath.

We have spent some of our honeymoon at Shanker. It was an extremely enjoyable stay, really good value for a reasonable price. The room was spotlessly clean, the service was great, the food was excellent. We were happy with everything, the atmosphere is exceptional. I would definitely recommend this hotel to family and friends. Can't wait to be back. Thank you very much Mr. Shanker.

I would highly recommend this hotel. The service was exceptional, rooms very comfortable and clean. And the breakfast was outstanding. Convenient location but also private & very quiet. Great value for your money.

We had a wonderful time at Hotel Shanker. Our room was spacious and clean and having air conditioning was wonderful. The pool was a fun place to hang out. The food at the restaurant was fantastic! We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel and both were excellent. The breakfast buffet had a lot of choices, including American type foods along with local foods. Overall it was a great experience.

I cannot thank each and every person at Shanker Hotel enough for what they have done for us during our stay. Two of our children were ill from food poisoning, and the hotel arranged a taxi to take us to the International Children's Hospital at midnight. My wife was bed ridden on the day we arrived and the management duly called a doctor at 6:00 am whom I extend my gratitude to as well for healing her. All the House Keeping staff, Kudos to you for helping is with the constant cleaning of the vomit every few hours. The staff at the Swimming Pool were cordial and actually allowed me to listen to my favorite music over their speakers. Mr. Prabhu Shanker, thank you for allowing us to check out at 2:00 pm and I am grateful to you, but only one thing that requires improvement is the hygiene in the kitchen as there were cockroaches beside the omelette station at breakfast. Regular chlorination of the pool water would also improve the quality as well since the monsoon dilutes the chemicals already in place. The duty manager actually tried to overcharge us for the pick-up which was already paid in advance, and I hope his attitude changes so that guests feel welcome. I wish you and the Shanker Family the best that life has to offer and may God bless the people of Nepal whose hearts are made of solid gold. Please note that not one single line is exaggerated.

Nice rooms with low windows & very Nepali decor. Durbar kind of feeling. Good service. A great escape for a night within the busy city.

A great relief from the dust and hustle bustle of Kathmandu city. Professional staff but need to heighten their display of friendliness. Internet needs to be improved especially in guest rooms. The best experience was spending time in the lawn and pool area over coffee. However, the pool cafe should extend their business hours and run some easy listening stuff instead of the local hits. Food in Shanker is much better than other international brands operating in Kathmandu. Overall, a decent and comfortable experience.

The bathroom was quite small as you had to close the door to access the sink. This could be fixed if the door would open the other way. Also being 1m80 I nearly touched the ceiling being in the tub. The room was fine, food was okay.
Bel endroit pour séjourner. Chambres agréables bien que le salle de bain soit petite. Il faut fermer la porte pour accéder qu lavabo. Mesurant 1m80 ma tête arrivait quasiment au plafond dans la baignoire. Le Wi-Fi à tendance à couper. La nourriture est correcte.

Clean room, small bathroom, but clean. The place's age is showing, could do with an internal upgrade. Breakfast very disappointing in variety, but quality is good. Staff are all very approachable. It is worth a visit, even if it is a bit over priced.

Great service, fantastic food and a convenient place to stay in Kathmandu.

Old world charm and elegance. Good location — 15 minute walk to the shops and restaurants of Thamel and a 20 minute taxi to the airport. Staff are very attentive. Buffet breakfast is superb. The restaurant menu covers western, Chinese and Indian / Nepalese. Try the chicken momos, superb. The decor of the dining rooms is wonderful. Very much looking forward to returning once the earthquake damage has been repaired.

I have been for 3 years in this hotel it's better than raddison hotel.

Staff is very friendly, location is also good. Internet is a bit complicated with password for every device, which sometimes creates a problem. Internet speed overall is good.

Overpriced. All photos from websiste have been taken Long Long time ago when this hotel was new. This was in an other era. Very Long Time ago. Breakfast is poor. I would have rated it 4-5 star if it cost half price.

Magnificient historic hotel. Loved the gardens. Enjoyed my time spent at their delightful bar in the lobby. Drinks were reasonably priced. The hotel seems to well serviced by local taxis. That will take about Rs 150 to Thamel. Or it was just a 10 min walk. Highly recommended. Would stay here if I ever visit Nepal again.

I along with 3 of my friends visited Nepal lately though we only went to Asia to visit India. We found the quality of the hotel and the country itself far better than what we had thought or what the perception is around. We luvd its prime location (just behind the royal palace and a km away from the best hangout place of kthmandu. (thamil), we totally enjoyed the stay, food and view from the hotel right after it rained and the fresh air of early mornings. It was a good deal over all, they give info about anything we wanted to see or anywhere we wanted to go. Very nice people. Btw the poolside bar was awesome. Definitely recommended.

Spent a week staying at the Shanker Hotel and enjoyed it immensely. The building is a converted palace and looks like a brilliant, oversized iced cake from the outside. Many of the rooms have individual character with coloured tiles and friezes of mythological characters around the walls. The staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful. The Hotel Bar is a cosy snug place for an Everest beer at the end of the evening and the pool area is well kept, cool and a refreshing oasis of calm. I will be coming again for return visits.

Kathmandu felt like a medieval city, people move in the heady rhythms set by those millennium-old temples and rituals. Add the dust and fumes from cars and trucks that never have to retire in this land, this city can be rather overwhelming after a full day out gawking at history-alive in the Durbar Sq. Or just coffee/book/date hunting on Durba Marg or Thema. So it's nice that Shanker is tugged away from all the hustle and bustle, behind a fortress of tall trees and a lush garden, but still within walking distance of Themal, Durbar Marg, and Durbar Sq! I stayed at Hotel Shanker for 7 nights, venturing out to all over the city and some parts of the valley. And every evening, boy, was I glad to be back in the quiet embrace of this colonial-style palace refurbished modern hotel. Do not expect 5* luxurious amenities of a brand new hotel in Shanghai or Singapore, don't read me wrong all the necessary creature comforts are more than well-provided for, but it is the slightly aged and antique style of the place's furnishings that will win you over. Great breakfast too, a good spread of western continental and Indian curry and pastries. Be sure to ask for their Masala tea, in place of cofee or tea! And if you come summer (I was there when it was just turning Spring), there's always that tentalizing swimming pool beside a bar set in the lush Maharaja-esque garden in front of the hotel.

Shanker hotel is located in a very quiet area. The breakfast was very good. You get good value for your money. The staff is friendly. The rooms are good and are every day, so how it like be cleansed you. The Kathmandu Centre is approx. 20 min. On foot. And there you will find many small restaurants for you not for dinner in the hotel.
