Blue Holbox

We stayed three nights at Blue Holbox and initially appreciated some positive aspects. The wooden cabins are original and charming, the rooms are spacious, and we enjoyed a nice sea view. Laura at the front desk was friendly, and the staff member cleaning our room was also kind and professional.
However, despite these positives, our overall experience was disappointing.
The breakfast was very poor. The coffee was undrinkable, the food quality extremely low, and the breakfast staff showed little to no interest in guests. This significantly affected our mornings and did not match the price or setting of the hotel.
There were also maintenance issues in the room. The sliding door to the balcony did not close properly, and during a storm, strong wind entered the room, causing a loud whistling noise and an uncomfortable cold draft. In addition, the toilet seat was of very poor quality and kept slipping into the bowl when used, which quickly became frustrating.
In conclusion, while Blue Holbox has great potential thanks to its design, location, and some friendly staff, the poor breakfast and lack of basic maintenance prevent us from recommending it in its current state.

With its nice spaceing of the 10 front bungalows, and being on the east side of town, probably the nicest beachfront location in Holbox. Also nice common space with hammocks and palm trees in front, and a nice stretch of deep beach — very unlike the cramped places in or closer to town.
The front bungalows are the only place you want to be! Top floor is priced a little above bottom and try to avoid the one bungalow on the left next to the restaurant. Generally price / quality it’s totally out of wack — you pay for the location, and you get a wooden cabin with lots of cracks and sand coming in everywhere when it’s windy.
The restaurant is abysmal, breakfast below the even low mexican standard. Front desk staff can (but also not) be very nice, room cleaning staff more so, but forget about the rest.
Many nice places to eat in town, probably led by Fuegos, Quartieri, Complemento.
Having said all this, I would stay in the front bungalow again, it’s simply the only place that feels relaxing in Holbox. Only alternative (better run, but location is.
Not) is Ser Casandra.

I don’t understand such bad reviews. These are more eco-friendly cabins, maybe they should be more upfront/clear about it; beach-focused (not pool-focused) and very rustic. We came at the end of the season (early Jan). The breakfast buffet was simple flavor-wise but quite filling: chilaquiles, scrambled eggs or omelets on demand, pancakes, ham cheese bread, fruit, yogurt, etc. The room is just fine; Wi-Fi is really bad, but it has everything else: great views, beach towels, A/C etc and it’s a 2-min walk to the beach chairs. Location is fine (about a 20-25min walk to the center). Pool is basically for kids only. If you get a good deal, you’ll be fine, try not to over pay though: there are many similar/better/worse options around.

We were a bit sceptical due to bad reviews but we experienced a very pleasant time at the hotel. Mostly because of very friendly staff, a wonderful (superior) hotel room and a great breakfast. Why no 5 stars? The pool is really small and doesn’t look very welcoming, also the facilities (Gym) seemed a bit old. All in all, we had a great time :)
The beach is super nice and the location of the hotel is perfect. Also super cute raccoons at breakfast :)

We came and there was perfect weather, no rain at all! The white beach sand is amazingly fine not course at all. Our room was super nice, great place to spend our time when we weren’t out and about. The receptionist was very kind and a man who helped carry our bags and showed us to our room. I’m gonna bring up the location again which was wonderful, we walked maybe 25 meters out and we could still stand. White sand, amazing beach, nice staff, and a nice room.
PS: You may see this as a downside but there were a bunch of wildlife all around, an occasional iguana by the pool was a fun surprise!

Review of Blue Hotel Holbox – Absolutely Not Worth the Money!
My stay at Blue Hotel Holbæk was a complete disappointment from beginning to end. There are so many issues, it’s hard to know where to start.
First of all, the air conditioning doesn’t work – it’s clearly overloaded and can’t cool the room at all. It felt more like a sauna than a hotel room.
The doors and windows don’t close properly, which means insects and animals can – and do – get inside. That is completely unacceptable at any hotel.
Wi-Fi? Forget it. It’s extremely poor – if you need to work or want to stream something, this is not the place.
The service at the reception is outright disrespectful. The staff literally stand around laughing and do absolutely nothing when you approach them with problems. It's embarrassing.
The hotel advertises a gym, but it’s a joke. The cross-trainer isn’t even plugged in, the exercise bike is falling apart – it’s outright dangerous. The only decent thing is the weights, and that’s being generous.
The only good thing about the hotel is the view. Unfortunately, that doesn’t save an otherwise awful experience.
The breakfast buffet is minimal to the point of ridiculous – several mornings there were no basic items like oats or even normal juices like orange or apple. And if that wasn’t bad enough, we found insects in the food – specifically in the eggs. That’s absolutely disgusting and completely unforgivable.
The key wristbands work terribly.

This was our third time in Holbox, but first time staying at Blue Holbox. Overall our experience was great! We stayed in an Oceanfront suite, which was beautiful, with a great view, comfortable bed (a little on the firmer side), and nice, simple amenities, like a mini-fridge and large rain shower. Our only issue with the room, was the AC struggled to cool our room well. We were in the second floor unit, which has an A Frame cathedral ceiling, which is beautiful, but probably is the reason why it struggled to cool the room well. It would cool better after dark, but we were still a little warm (we do like to sleep in a cool environment, so this may not be an issue for everyone). My guess is the first floor ocean front suites don't have this issue.
The grounds were very well kept and free from trash. Pack bug spray, because there are a lot of mosquitoes after dark, but this is common for Holbox, so more of a tip than a critique of Blue.
This location was great for us. Enough out of town that things are a little quieter at night (except for the taxis), but close enough to walk into town for food and drinks.
The beach was the best we had in our three stays. There are chairs on the beach included with your stay with a palapa and table if you wanted to sit in the shade. This stretch of beach is pretty quiet. The ocean in front of the resort is shallow and calm and would get as warm as bathwater by the afternoon, which we loved.

Fantastic hotel at the beach, well located at walking distance from the center (10 min walk along shoreline). We booked the very spacious garden bungalow equipped with a powerful rainshower, AC, ceiling fans and beds with mosquito nets. Warm welcoming during check-in. Amazing gym in the middle of the garden. Tasty breakfast with sea-view (continental & chilaquiles). After check-out we were still allowed to use the beachbeds and the shower at the reception. Highly recommended!

Spent 7 days here in late June. Quiet season. Perfect location to rest and settle. Best beaches are on this side (East Side). Easy walking distance to the centre for dinner. Peaceful at night. Buffet style breakfast could do with some tweaks, but other than that it was perfect for what we needed 🙏

We had the best time at Blue Holbox! It was low season so we had a lot of quiet. The whole hotel area was very beautiful and well kept, gorgeous plants. Our Bungalow was super close to a picture perfect beach with hammogs, umbrellas and loungers we could use. Close to our bungalow we had a lovely pool and gym. Everything was clean. Staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast was not a buffet due to low season but we could pick whatever we wanted from the menu. We did order a lot (but we didn't waste any food! ) and recieved some side eye for that, we also heard staff comment about other customers amount of food they ordered, but the food was delicious and the view from the restaurant to the beach was absolutely gorgeous. Every morning we saw flamingos fly along the beach. The ferry is within walking distance (15mins) or you take a taxi. Holbox in general is a gorgeous, magical destination!

The location is excellent, and the sea-facing rooms are truly lovely.
However, there are several reasons why I wouldn’t choose to stay here again:
1. Reception Experience: Upon arrival, the receptionist insisted that we hadn’t paid for our reservation and demanded payment again. Only after we showed proof of payment from our bank did he bother to check their records—at which point it became clear that the payment information on their side hadn’t been updated. He never apologized and was quite rude throughout. The first 15 minutes of our stay were marked by unnecessary stress and negative energy.
2. Hidden Fees: We were asked to pay a 2, 000 MXN deposit that had not been mentioned anywhere prior to our arrival. The receptionist refused to hand over the room keys unless we paid this extra amount—another unpleasant surprise.
3. Lack of Hospitality: No one checked in with us during our stay or asked if we needed anything. There was a clear lack of interest in our experience.
In short, while the setting is beautiful, the customer service—especially from key staff—doesn’t live up to the expectations set by the venue. A lovely place, but unfortunately let down by the people running it.

The hotel is decent, but it doesn’t justify its price. The reception staff should be better trained and friendlier and the breakfast buffet is disappointing. The rooms are okay-ish. However, I really loved the location—it’s in a quieter area while still being within easy walking distance of the center. There’s definitely room for improvement, but overall, it wasn’t a bad stay. I wouldn't go back though.

Careful: The first picture with the houses around the pool is NOT this hotel!
We booked early check in and late check out to then simply be told "it's not available" — ok thanks for nothing.
— worst breakfast we've had in a while. Coffee and orange juice borderline undrinkable. Our second day we skipped it and went into town to eat.
— frontdesk personnel not friendly, helpful or understanding.

Avoid this place. They have done a good job covering up a bad hotel with a pretty facade.

Receptionist lacked any empathy and was unable to provide any form of help or service after a terrible first night in our noisy room. Only focused on the problem and couldn’t provide any solution together with his “boss”.
Luckily there are plenty of other good places to stay along the beach.

We absolutely loved our 2 night stay in a beach bungalow (room 101) The location is absolutely stunning and we fell in love with our room and the large opening doors that opened up. T0. Our beach facing deck, complete with hammock. The pool area was great as are the beachfront loungers which you have included in the price. Breakfast was superb with plenty of choice and excellent coffee. We didn't want to leave and have promised ourselves we will. Be back for a longer stay next time as the island of Holbox was the highlight of an already amazing trip to Mexico.

In general we were satisfied with the room, the cleanliness and the service. The breakfast was a huge disappointment. There was no love, no variety, no respect to the people that spent lots of money to book a hotel with breakfast included. I would suggest better not to offer breakfast because it is a disgrace what they offer, especially the bread, which is no bread, it's a sample for food poisoning. The good thing is they offered eggs, but how many days can a person eat an omelette? We spent 7 nights there, 7 breakfasts included, I will have eggs again in a year.

We had to leave the place shortly after arriving at the hotel, despite having paid 2.200 USD (extremely overpriced) in advance as it was simply depressing and disgusting rooms. Extremely dirty rooms, black dots on the sheets, and water on the floor — when I told and showed the staff there, they simply replied “yes it’s the tropics”. Having been many places in Mexico and the tropics, I know that this has nothing to do with hygiene. Very dark rooms with almost no light entry. This is the first time I’ve ever written a hotel review, but I feel obliged to make sure that as few people as possible book this place. Save your energy and money for something worthwhile. Worst scam I ever experienced.
