Mitake

If you’re looking for an authentic experience, wonderful staff, beautiful scenery and resident kitties, this is the spot for you. Their breakfast was also equally fantastic. I cannot say enough good things about this spot. Despite other reviews commenting on the “dated” look of the place, that’s what we came here for. This place has been around for 100 years and that tradition and history truly is what gives this place its character. This will be our go to spot if/when we come back to Hakone.

I would highly reccomend Mitake to anyone travelling to Hakone.
Mitake was our first ryokan experience and it did not disappoint! The location is excellent with multiple bus stops in front of it and the Venetian Glass Museum only a 8 minute walk away.
The staff were all very friendly and helpful. We chose to get both dinner and breakfast during our stay and they were both delicious and unique. I would definitely reccomend anyone travelling to at the very least add on dinner as it adds to the overall ryokan experience.
The private onsens were perfect for decompressing and rest after lots of travel. Mitake also has games and origami available that was a nice addition. The only thing I'd do differently is spend more time at the ryokan as it was truly a relaxing and fantastic first ryokan experience.

Our stay at Ryokan Mitake in the beautiful Hakone region was incredibly relaxing and truly special. This small, family-run ryokan is filled with warmth, care, and genuine hospitality.
The hotel manager and his two attentive staff members went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and valued. Their attention to detail was exceptional, and it made the entire experience feel personal and meaningful.
Breakfast was served in a traditional Japanese style, and each component was thoughtfully explained by the manager. It wasn’t just delicious – it was an experience in itself, full of care and cultural richness.
Dinner, priced at just 5, 000 yen per person, was absolutely outstanding. Some might think it’s a lot, but trust me – it’s worth every single yen. The quality and presentation were on par with high-end dining.
Their in-house onsen (both private and public) were another highlight – incredibly peaceful and rejuvenating, adding to the whole atmosphere of relaxation.
Overall, I want to sincerely thank the Mitake team for making our stay so memorable. It was a wonderful experience, and I will gladly recommend it to friends, family, and anyone looking for a special place to stay in Hakone.

The hotel is getting a bit tired, but still an awesome experience. A fantastic place for a family to base itself from.
We appreciated the bus stop just across the road, the friendly staff, the private onsens, and the crazy amount of interesting board games.

The hotel is old tradional japanese style, both in decoration and rooms. It has public and private onsens which is a big plus.
I only had dinner and it was delicious and more than enough not to sleep hungry.
The most important feature is the service. The hosts were friendly to me and helped me with all my requests even when I was like "do not worry about it, it is ok", they still went above and beyond to find solutions and make sure I have the most perfect stay possible.
Important note if you are coming by bus, make sure you get off at "Senkyoro-mae" bus station.

Customer service was great, very kind and informative and helpful. Recommend dinner as the presentation was amazing and food tasted great. The location is perfect as there is a beautiful view with also a corner shop and a bus stop next to it. The private pool was great and the hotel cats are super cute and friendly!

The staff were all super friendly and welcome (including their lovely cat). Very good english speaking as well. The food was beautifully laid out and tasty! The services were great, amazing onsens including private onsens and an overall very relaxing atmosphere. Would definitely stay here again!

If I could give Mitake 10 stars I would! This stay was the highlight of my two week trip. The rooms were beautiful and simple, the onsen was inviting and relaxing. However if there’s two things to really highlight it’s the food and the staff. The dinner service is a must! I didn’t anticipate a gorgeous and fresh feast! The staff is truly some of the most kind, generous, hard working people I’ve ever met who clearly love what they do. They were incredibly patient with my friend and I, who speak little to no Japanese. Please consider staying here and appreciate the staff and their hard work! THANK YOU MITAKE!

Pretty good place, it is right near an station from the local bus as well, so very little walking distance.
The staff is very friendly and helpful, and they also have a orange cat named Leo 🦁! Super playful!
The public onsen is also pretty nice, it is a bit small as it can fit at most 5 ppl, but overall it's a nice experience.

I do a lot of ratings and am loath to give bad ratings but this is a run down boarding house. It's poorly kept and from outside (and inside) looks awful. The shared bathroom resembled a poor ablution block for a camp site. Everything looked like it hadn't been cleaned for months. 2night booking which we cut and left after 1st right. Extremely disappointed as our Japanese experience was awful.

Quality of the hot springs is great! It’s cloudy spring and has sulfur aroma that I love.
You can see the cherry blossoms in the garden from the guest room and it has a very good atmosphere.
All the dishes are delicious too!

Lovely ambience of the restaurant, was a particularly rare find since it was raining and getting quite late (7.45pm). Lovely food, great setting.
The staff were also very friendly — my friend had his birthday yesterday so I asked the chef if they have any dessert. It wasn't on the menu but they still made soy pudding with matcha jelly for us. Was very delicious and we had a great time.
