Place is old. Musty smell in the onsen. One of the onsen had the smell of expired dumplings. The outdoor mixed pool is really nice though. Too bad there was a construction site with workers peering at the naked bathers at the onsen. Power in my room tripped twice. The second time I had to go to the main switchboard and reset it myself. The poor old lady would not know how to. There was an effusive expression of arigato when I finally managed to reset the circuit breaker. Food is nothing to shout about. Most dishes were overly salty. Especially the grilled fish. You would think that there is a secret salt mine somewhere. People are generally friendly though. Extremely polite. I stayed at another onsen at ASO before coming here. Considering that I paid just US70 lesser at okunoyu, I think a 2 star would justify.

This is a very friendly to foreign tourists hot spring hotel, when we encountered heavy snow was trapped, even willing to help us down the mountain to buy snow Lian.

A really nice resort and service, with different kind of onsen and feel relaxing, I spent 3D2N overthere, enjoyed it very much!

We spent only one night here as it was about $450 for a night. It was a nice hotel. The room seemed a little dated but it seems most average priced Ryokans do. Beds were quite comfortable. We got western beds with a river view that was amazing. It would be so nice to sit out there in the warmer months. Probably not as pretty in winter. Food was pretty good. But don't go here expecting a mind blowing kaiseki experience. The food is generally nice Japanese dishes. It's disappointing that you can't make use of your room completely and have the food on the table on the tatami mats in private. We had to have dinner in the dining room which I think takes away from the overall onsen) Ryokan experience. The onsen baths are freaking amazing. Particukarly the one at the end with a view to the waterfall. There are private onsens for couples and also mixed onsens if you're not shy. We tried the mixed onsens but had them all to ourselves anyway!

The food is awesome and outdoor onsen is awesome too! I love the sound of the river under the sky. It is mixed onsen but there is time slot for Woman only during 8-10 pm.

We LOVE this place, very traditional great food and lovely Onsen. The kids (3 and 4) loved the "volcano eggs" (eggs cooked in the steam of the hot springs) Most guests were a bit older than us, but no one minded a family with two small kids!

Great baths and outstanding Japanese cuisine it's very much worth it to book with meals included. We enjoyed the mixed baths when traveling as a couple.

Loving it for the Kon-yoku rotenburo and its awesome stone bath! Large indoor pool for those who may prefer their swimming costumes. Give the cavern bath a miss :p.

Great atmosphere and view. There is also a cold water bath, which is unusual for this onsen town.

Outdoor onsen with several options. The mixed area has a stunning view over a waterfall and the river nearby, plus a cave bath. Walk-in bathing possible for 500yen, Kurokawa onsen pass accepted.
