As a solo traveller the staff were very accommodating and super friendly! The private onsens were amazing too.

I had a fantastic experience at Kashiwaya Ryokan in Shima onsen. I chose to stay here for one night in the Kame room with a private onsen.

My son and I are on our first trip to Japan and wanted to explore more than the cities. From the moment we got to Kane Midori, we felt welcome and knew we would have a wonderful experience.

I had a short stay there and was very impressed. The staff is very friendly and helpful, the room is very authentic and has everything that you might need during the trip.

Located slightly deeper into the mountains away from the main Minakami Onsen area, Tanigawa Ryokan offers a quiet sanctuary.

I wish I could leave a review in Japanese, but I don’t think I could do it justice! It’s my second language. 🙈
The attention to detail to the service and atmosphere was phenomenal.

Our first stay at a traditional onsen ryokan, and we will be returning for sure. The place is painfully beautiful, and the entire staff was friendly and helpful.

My stay here was amazing and much needed. The ryokan is very clean and peaceful. Staff was patient and accommodating with the language barrier. Everyone is very friendly.

Travel: easy commute from Tokyo taking an hour's ride on the shinkasen then a 20minute bus ride to Minakami station where a mini van brought us to the Ryokan. Communication was prompt and excellent.

Exceptional service without any pretension. The building dates from the 1960’s but has been maintained and updated well and is very clean.

Watanoyu Annex is a clean, beautiful, and cozy place to stay. The inn is just a short walk from the town center, with plenty of accessible dining options nearby.

Possibly the best hotel room I've ever stayed in. The hotel is small (8 rooms) but cosy. We preferred it to the Kusatsu Hotel opposite.
The breakfast is also fantastic!

My wife and I stayed at Shiroiya Hotel, and it was quite simply the finest hotel experience I have ever had.

2025.10 Lucky to get a room this weekend at this hotel for an immersive modern art and gourmet stay. Everything perfectly curated and all hotel staff members so nice making it warm hospitality.

I could see this hotel directly from the Manza Prince Hotel. The Juraku is just beside the volcano vent.

This is located very hidden from cities. Good air, good onsen, and good food. The hotel provided buffet, so you can choose what you want.

From the moment we arrived, we were treated with great care.
I was staying with my 11-year-old boy, and it was very attractive that we could use the four private baths for free at any time.

I went in the summer.
Chiaki Jinsen-tei has a retro feel.
It was a basic room, but the view was good and the mountains in the distance were beautiful.

Hanaichi is a small ryokan is quite remote and is best accessed by car.

Excellent to say the least.
The rooms, hot springs, food, and service are all of a high standard.

I really enjoyed this Ryokan — the food was wonderful and the staff were sone of the friendliest and most helpful I've ever met at a Ryokan.

We loved our stay here from start to finish. We were warmly welcomed and greeted on arrival. They booked us into the private onsen, took our dinner order and supplied us with kimonos.

I chose the cheapest room, but there was a TV in the bathroom! There is also a massage chair and cup udon noodles in case you get hungry.

Clean and nice room. They provide complete appliances in the room, there is a massage chair, a microwave, and a refrigerator in the room. They also provide a TV in bathroom.

The pros:
— Staff super kind, professional, and with excellent English speaking skills.
— Included restaurant has a diverse and good quality set of dishes.
— Onsen water is high quality and unique.

Very friendly staff! Sume speaks a really good English. Rooms very comfy and spacious.

Overall a good experience for what’s available to the area.

I looooove this hotel. Everything from the food, the room, the hot spring, the price, the location everything is perfect. It’s very affordable and it even provides two wonderful meal.

My stay at La Vista Kusatsu Hills was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment I checked in, the staff’s warmth and attentiveness stood out.

I visited during July 2024 and had an absolutely phenomenal time.
Everything — from the rooms to the food to the staff — was outstanding. The views from my bedroom were out of this world.

We spent our honeymoon at Yado Kanzan.

The owner is very friendly. Boutique hotel with 5 Rooms and are very spacious and good. Three onsens here and one offer great views of the mountains.

It took around three hours to get to but it was truly worth it.
An out of the way location, from Tokyo it took two trains and two buses later it was worth it.

The public bus was late, so they drove us in their own car all the way to the train station! Great experience. Very traditional place, mostly Japanese patrons.

We stayed for 2 nights. It was so relaxing. Our room have 3 beds. We feel very comfortable.

The dinner started off good but it got so bad quickly. And the food is very light portions, we ended up eating sushi 4 minutes walk away from the hotel after!

Had an amazing time staying at Tim & Naoko’s place over the course of two days.

I had an absolutely incredible experience for my 5 day solo trip, and I can’t recommend GS Astuto enough to anyone looking to explore Japan by bike. I was on a titanium road bike.

After a disappointing experience at Kusatsu, I approached Omori Ryokan with some anxiety — the parking seemed tight and my budget room appeared smaller than previous stays.

Really good service and amazing roof top open onsen.
Love the horse themed and history. Very cozy area with shoes off policy.

We stayed here during our honeymoon trip across Japan and looking back, it was definitely the nicest place we stayed in. It is a traditional family-owned business.

We stayed at this 5th generation, family run ryokan for 2 nights in October and had a lovely time.

Although I did not stay at the hotel, we did use the hotels onsen facilities.

A traditional hotel in Kusatsu, conveniently located near the main attractions in town. It’s easy to walk from the hotel to many sightseeing spots.

Though it’s a 10 min walk from the central area, it’s a very good hotel with friendly staff and delicious dinner. The price is very reasonable with such a dinner in my opinion.

5 star hotel service! Very accommodating for non-japanese speakers. Little English is spoken and written but are accustomed to using translators. Stayed for 3 days.

We stayed here on August 9 — 11. This place is EXCELLENT! VERY Beautiful area, very quiet, safe. Masa was very nice and helpful, gave lots of information on the area.

Traditional style furnitures but indeed very new and clean! Super nice staff. Perfect location just next to bus terminal, 3-4mins walk to onsen centre so not to noisy.

So worth it — even more than worth it!
