The most wonderful stay with the kindest hosts ever. Everyone is super kind and helpful, and it's clear that they love and their and love sharing Japanese culture with visitors. Rooms were clean and spacious, food was delicious, and the kindness was out of this world. A must stay if you plan on staying in Miyajima.

One of the best Japanese restaurants I’ve come across, staff speak English and have great options for vegetarians.

Accomodation in a great location in Miyajima, close to the ferry port. The building itself is not traditional, but we stayed in a Japanese style room which was very large and comfortable. We also paid for traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast, both of which were exceptional and the best meals so far on our trip (just over a week in Japan now). The Japanese are known for their helpfulness and hospitality, but the service we received from our hosts at Yamaichi Bekkan was easily the best we have received so far. They frequently went the extra mile to help us with problems, advise on the best sites to see given the weather, and explain the food that was being served. Would definitely go back and would advise others to also stay there.

Great Hotel. Rooms in the norm, nothing great but the owner and the son Teppei are great. They are very helpful and friendly, full of energy to offer the best.

Delicious food and friendly staff. The woman that stands behind the counter speaks English and made us feel very comfortable during our order. Not to mention tbe vicinity the ferry station which makes it very convenient.

We only went to dinner as we stayed elsewhere. The food didn't seem like much of a thing. Of the three dishes we ordered the one that was very good was the rice bowl with tempura and soup.

Shinko is lovely and caters for vegans exceptionally well. We would love to visit again.

Great place to stay on island for the price. It is a bit dated but the rooms are just fine and the dining experience was excellent, dinner and breakfast provided. Private bath also. The owner was awesome and more than accommodating for westerners, he'll tell you everything you need to know about Japanese culture and all the spots to hit while you're there. We would definitely stay again!

We only went to the restaurant for dinner, being one of our few options and the only one with vegetarian choice! Great sushi and tempura :)

I loved my vegetarian tempura set. So delicious! They also have room temperature (instead of refrigerated) red wine. I just came in for dinner as rooms too expensive. Staff are lovely and all speak English. I'll definitely eat here again.

Only stayed one night. The room was clean and Basic. But what I liked about this place was the friendly staff. Especially the owner. She was everywhere, she never stoped. She cold speak enough English for her to explain the food I got at dinner and breakfast. As for the food, that was the highlight of the stay. So beautifully presented and tasted out of this world.

My wife and I stayed here during our honeymoon. Our entire stay was absolutely fantastic, and I can't recommend Yamaichi Bekkan enough. The owners are extremely nice, the rooms are lovely (especially the Japanese style rooms), the food is excellent, and the location is perfect. And in fact, when we stayed, it was also the most inexpensive hotel on the island (except for perhaps the youth hostels). We stayed two days in a Western-style room, and two in a Japanese-style room (they offered to upgrade us after another group cancelled, since they knew I'd originally wanted a Japanese-style room but they filled up before I could book). We also had breakfast all four days, and dinner one night, at the restaurant on the first floor. Between the rooms, food, and hospitality, even by very high Japanese standards, everything was excellent. A few notes, especially for foreign travelers: (1) The owners do speak English. (2) The only down-side is that they can fill up quickly. So you should book early if you want a guaranteed place. (3) The Japanese-style rooms are (in my opinion) much better, but they fill up earlier, so book well in advance. (4) The food is excellent. Consider having breakfast and/or dinner at the hotel each day during your stay. (5) Most restaurants on the island close in the late afternoon (especially on weekdays), so there are very few dinner options.

We had a delightful visit in October, 2008. Our accommodations were extremely spacious, including a 7 1/3 mat plus a 12 1/2 mat room with private bath. Our hostess, Shinko Yamamatsu, was exceptionally gracious and most considerate in granting my request to include oysters in our second dinner, as I had heard they were a specialty in Miyajima and they were served 3 ways during our 8-course meal. We hope that someday we can return to enjoy her hospitality.
