There is an inexplicable sense of appreciation when you stumble upon that perfect combination of location, hospitality, and culture. Our week with Rod and Dewi at IstanaOmbak Eco Resort captured all three, leaving me with the urgent and unsolicited need to write this review.
My family (my 18-year-old son and ageless wife) hoped a week in Watukarung would quench our thirst for surf, relaxation, and an immersive experience in rural Javanese culture. We arrived late at night, the sound of breaking waves welcoming us into an immaculate three-person room spitting distance from the resort's infinity pool. Somewhere in the night's sky, we could make out the silhouettes of the small islands that would become the backdrop of our 7-day adventure.
We awoke to something far more splendid than we could have imagined. Sprawled before us was the kind of view you choose as a laptop screensaver, hoping that such a place really exists, let alone actually seeing it in person. And then we saw the waves… bold, magnificent, dynamic structures that lured us into their depths. When they grew too large, we watched in awe as far more talented surfers pulled maneuvers from a contemporary version of 'The Endless Summer'. Accents, as diverse as the waves, could be heard describing their sessions as exhausted surfers paddled their way back to shore before a nap, a snack, and another session.
But, as this 53-year-old can attest, the body can only take so much.
We had an excellent stay at this resort. It’s paradise on earth and very friendly staff.
The manager helped us translating in Bahasa when there was an issue we had with Garuda airlines, also we were allowed to use there phone. Her help really saved us from big trouble and a lot of stress!
Also we are very grateful for the extra work Rose (the cook) making a kwee lapis as birthday cake for my husbands birthday. It was the best kwee lapis we’ve ever tasted.
The manager also arranged fishing gear for a boattrip at the river for us at a very short notice as a birthday surprise for my husband, which was really appreciated a lot.
Also we are very grateful for all the help to arrange the transport etc. When two members of our family had suddenly had to leave earlier because of an emergency at home.
We highly recommend to stay at this beautiful place with very good service and everything taking care of very well.

I've been here over 10 times and often with my family when my kids were younger. The resort has stepped it up a notch again, more expensive than other local offering but worth every bit of it. You're literally right in the beach, and sea breeze cools things down. Food is exceptional, and tuna sashimi melts in your mouth. Room finishes are great, we stayed upstairs and they are super quiet. But best of all is the service by Rod, Dewi and the staff. They make you feel right at home.
