Stayed here on a recommendation while we were passing through on our honeymoon. We got “upgraded” to “Antarctica” which was basically what would happen if Austin Powers shacked up with a penguin. Black and white theme, fun fur, weird mirrors surrounding a pod jacuzzi guarded by penguin statues… very unusual. Honestly the thing we couldn’t get over was the musty smell. We opened windows as long as we could to try to air the place out but no luck. The staff were very nice and genuinely helpful. Dinner in the restaurant was passable but not great in our favourite experience. There are so many amazing places we stayed in Iceland. Unfortunately, this didn’t live up to all the hype in our opinion.

I stayed here with some friends and we each had our own rooms. It was fantastic. I enjoyed everything about the resort including the people the service and the vibe there.

The best breakfast buffet! The rooms aren't gigantic but above average (for iceland) and nice. The bathroom is rather big but I haven't found out how to shower without having water all over (no curtain). It doesn't smell of eggs though (wohoo! ). There are multiple hot tubs in front of the rooms and the area is beautiful and green (probably white in the winter). I would totally come back to this hotel and also it has the kindest manager I've met.

Have stay at the Ranga twice, great customer service with a smile, we stayed in fantastic rooms on both occasions. Fantastic restaurant and delicious food, great scenery a great place for a wedding or wedding reception highly recommended.

Our room was bigger than average and was very clean. Our dinner at the restaurant was one of the better places we ate at in Iceland. They also had a happy hour. You can get a free drink of your choice as part of staying there. If you want to see Northern lights, this is the place you wanna be at. One negative is that when you take a shower the water really does stink and the water doesn't get very hot.

Exceptionally poor customer service by the male proprietor/manager. He is grey-haired, in his 70's, and will sit at your table uninvited. He will then engage in salacious conversation in an intimidating and condescending way. He is very demeaning towards women and seems to engage the younger ones. You may have uninvited company at your table as the manager, owner may sit with you and engage in very inappropriate conversation. Do not recommend. Waste of money based on the unpleasant experience. The rooms are noisy and customer service poor.

Awesome hotel with great staff! We were using it as a hub for our exploration of southeast Iceland, and really enjoyed every minute! Friendly staff, great breakfast, small but nice rooms… On our last night, we saw the Northern Lights, from the parking lot of the hotel, which was indescribable! Would recommend to anyone.

Absolutely amazing. Truly one of the classiet places I have stayed. The whole staff from top to bottom is all about hospitality. You will be missing put on a wonderful experience if you pass this opportunity by. Eat here for sure… Interestingly enough one of the best burgers I have ever eaten was here. However, the food is on the classy side. Hi brow or low, all delicious.

We did not stay at the hotel but spent a night there for my husband’s birthday with friends for drinks and dinner. Although a bit pricey, our best meal in Iceland was at Ranga. The atmosphere inside the restaurant was great and the service was fantastic. The cod was absolutely delicious. They also made an announcement while we were dining that the northern lights were slightly visible outside in case guests were interested in stepping out to see. Overall wonderful experience.

Great place to spend your vacation. Clean room and comfortable bed. The best place to see the northern lights. Great staff. Food was really awesome and delicious.

The reception was very warm. We arrived very early because a storm was announced. We were greeted with open arms, and we were offered a drink while he was making our room. And overall all the staff is friendly. There is even a service to make you wake up in case of Aurora Borealis! The room was large, with a large bathtub and clean. The lounge/bar area is cocooning with large leather sofas. And you can stay there without being disturbed. (and eat at affordable prices) The breakfast is gargantuan and very good (it just lacks squeezed orange juice for this standing). The restaurant is OK and in the high ranges in terms of price. The Jacuzzi is clearly a plus, even if shared with the other rooms.
We had taken a classic room that complies with the photos: past decoration, which lacks charm. The pillows were too soft, so get up with a stiff neck! For me, despite the services next door, the house does not justify such a high price.

Food, accommodation and staff absolutely 1st class. Really made our holiday, staying here.

This is a truly excellent hotel… very comfortable, wonderful staff, delicious and hugely plentiful food (think my weight has increased dramatically! ). We enjoyed the observatory with the very knowledgeable astronomer and we were very lucky to see the Northern Lights too. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole excursion and looking forward to doing it all over again.

We had been wanting to stay here for years after a friend’s recommendation. So we finally booked it and it didn’t fail to impress! From the second we drove through the entrance and parked up we were happily pleased! We saw the northern lights every night. The first night we were eating reindeer and puffin in the hotel restaurant when the hotel owner Frederico comes up to the table to introduce himself to us. We thought that was pretty darn amazing but then he announces to th…e whole restaurant that the Northern Lights were showing outside so everyone gets up, walks out on his request, puts on a warm ski suit onesie provided by the hotel, and we see the sky lit up! That’s the first time we’d ever seen them. The wake up calls are brilliant, we had one every night. And the lights were fantastic. Very handy just being outside the hotel as you could just go to bed straight after. And we didn’t have to spend any money on a tour. The room was very comfortable, lovely and warm and spacious. We had a hot tub right outside the room which we used every day after we got back from exploring Iceland. Robes are provided by the hotel. You can drink the tap water and it’s lovely! All in all a fantastic stay in a very nice hotel. Can highly recommend this place! If you want to experience luxury with a homely feeling then the Ranga is perfect!

Amazing hotel — great service but discreet — own hot tub — excellent wine list recommend the 97 petrus — a highlight of our trip and perfect location set up for seeing the northern lights.

The friendliest place ever, totally geared up for views of the lights if they appear. We have had a hot tub under the stars and eaten dinner and breakfast. Both superb, champagne with breakfast if you like! The food is excellent. Thoroughly recommend Hotel Ranga.

We LOVED this hotel. The staff were excellent and very helpful with whatever you needed and the food… Well… the food was beautiful, every morsel… And one of the best steaks I've ever eaten, well 2 steaks as I chose it the 2nd night too. The manager came and spoke to us each night at our table, lovely touch.
Our room was North facing so when the Northern lights appeared on our first night, we were dining when the manager came in and announced it and there was a stampede, we went to our own rooms and sat with a little tipple watching the lights from the comfort of our own veranda. Stunning. The rooms were fab with our own Jacuzzi bath. What can I say? Fabulous xx.

Amazing place that gave them also the opportunity to see the northern Lights. A beautiful room just missed the Q the Hydro of the tub did not work, but Q was supplemented with the Jacuzzi thermal water outside.

My favorite hotel in Iceland, offering a cosy atmosphere and great food. Also one of the best places in Iceland for watching the northern lights and stargazing, they even have an in-house astronomer and a star observatory!

We are staying here as part of a tour. The hotel is a pleasant surprise with nicely rustic rooms. A little quirky-we have chickens painted on the walls of our room. The restaurant is excellent for dinner and breakfast with great service. The bathroom is large with a strange shower. It's in a jacuzzi tub with no curtain so water does tend to get around as you shower. No big deal though. Shortly after this review we had dinner here. Had a 7:30 reservation and got promptly seated. Waitress took our order and that was it. An hour later a waiter brought our wives' dishes but not ours. He came back a few minutes later and said they lost the other two dishes. He took the first two dishes back to keep warm. A half hour later we still didn't have our food and staff wouldn't even look at us. The owner came over and apologized for the "slight" delay. As a peace offering he brought smoked puffin… Now we're at two hours and no food. There's nowhere else to eat so we're trapped. Finally another half hour later we get our food and the manager offers whatever we want to drink. The food is excellent but this was torture. It may be a glitch. But beware.

What a terrific experience. This is a quaint hotel in a gorgeous setting. Worth the extra money. The staff was so friendly, and the rooms were comfortable. The vibe of the hotel integrates flawlessly with the Iceland countryside.

Rustic (in appearance) hotel with great service. Wood accents most of the hotel with lovely views of the river and easy access from the main roads. The food at the restaurant is very good and the breakfast was very well appointed. Great spot to stay at.

My favorite hotel of our honeymoon. The staff made it feel more like a resort, taking responsibility for every aspect of our trip so that we would get the best experience possible. This was the only hotel (out of 6) to do something special for us as honeymooners. When we checked in there were rose petals on our bed. It was so simple but it made us feel very appreciated. The owner stops by every table at dinner to personally welcome you, and the complementary breakfast includes champagne. The food is extraordinary, and the rooms are cozy. The bathtub is decadent, although the mattress was awful — it felt like a box spring with no padding, sharp corners and loud creaky noises. It doesn't even matter, the experience was that good. I'd come back to the Ranga in a heartbeat, and will be recommending it to everyone I know.

Beautiful, amazing Iceland. The land where the forces of nature are so visible. A magical land with elfs and trolls, volcanoes, snow and black beaches. Where you can go stargazing from the hot tub in Hotel Ranga or chase the Northern Lights from their observatory. This hotel will make such a wonderful starting point for exploring the country. The owner and staff are friendly and welcoming and the scenery with mountains and river is beyond beautiful.

Hotel Ranga is the best hotel in Iceland, no doubt. From California I was able to plan a wedding reception with help from Eyrún Aníta Gylfadóttir, Hotel Ranga's Wedding Planner. She was exceptional and exceeded my expectations. I wish I could give her stars because she would get 10! The food was artfully presented and delicious. The staff was truly professional. When we return to Iceland we will be staying in Hotel Ranga.

An incredibly unique hotel with plenty of character, that knows the meaning of hospitality. I can't say enough good things about our stay. To start, the place is absolutely gorgeous and the rooms are comfortable, uniquely decorated (each painted with a themed mural that ties in with the locale). All rooms feature amazing views of the Ranga River, Eyjafjallajokull volcano to the East and miles of countryside with wildlife coming and going. Dining is spectacular, not only the scenery but the gourmet dishes make for really difficult choosing (you can't go wrong). Above all, Fridrik and staff were incredibly welcoming and pleasant, to a level I have never before experienced in travelling the world. It made our Iceland trip memorable. Thank you!

Rooms are clean quite and nice. The scene and the staff are great. The food is amazing!

Great location though not much to do outside the hotel. Basic rooms are very basic but the suites look lovely. Food was hit or miss, but on our last night we had lamb and it was delicious. Breakfast is a bit substandard but overall it was a nice stay.

This is a wonderful resort out in what seems the middle of no where, but not far from anything you need. They have a great restaurant, a friendly owner and host. They call you room if the northern lights make an appearance.

We had an idyllic stay in our sweet cabin like room. The front desk staff were incredibly helpful and warm. The rooms were clean & comfortable, our view of the volcano was outstanding. Beautiful remote landscape. We were able to view the northern lights two nights in a row. Our entire trip was fantastic but our stay at Hotel Ranga was a definite highlight.

Our experience at Hotel Ranga was superb. We went there in anticipation of seeing the Northern Lights, but for the most part, the weather was uncooperative. However, the staff made us feel very welcome and comfortable, even arranging some daily activities for us on a day we had not previously scheduled. The dining experience was top notch. The wait staff was very attentive but not overly so, and quite interesting to talk with. And the food, WOW, wonderful. The addition of the observatory was a very pleasant surprise and should set Hotel Ranga apart from others in the area offering Northern Lights showings. Saevar is a very good and informative resource. He was a pleasure to talk with. I would not hesitate to stay there again, maybe the clouds would stay away next time.

Note: Google Maps showed this location as closed. I just requested it be changed to open. We were here 8/19/14 and it was thriving. You are driving along Rt. 1, truly enjoying the scenery yet seemingly in the middle of nowhere, and see a small sign for Hotel Ranga — STOP, turn now and get there! This place is just perfect. Understated on the outside, not an eyesore whatsoever on the beautiful countryside — obviously the benefactor of incredible vision brought to life by a quality architect — and pure luxury on the inside. We stumbled in here after treating our rented 4x4 to several hours on F-roads. Feeling and looking dusty and tired we walked into the lobby and directly to the restaurant, in need of a good dinner. Despite our extremely casual appearance not one staff member batted an eye. They seated us immediately and began to serve a truly wonderful meal. Culinary joy as each dish came to us. The Lava beer was an excellent addition. A true stout, at 9.6% also a quick way to down the equivalent of nearly 3 light beers. My "local chicken" dish was exquisite, as was the green salad starter. The salmon, the mountain lamb, the multiple ice creams for dessert — all of it absolutely wonderful. We will definitely return and when we do we will stay for a couple of days as we make our way around this beautiful land once more.

Good lunch stop. The meals are very large and tasty.

Had an amazing evening at Hotel Rangá. After a day of glacier hiking we went to this establishment to rest and eat. The reindeer and salmon we had were terrific, fresh ingredients and very well prepared. At the dinner I asked my girlfriend to marry me after which we got an applause and champagne from the manager. Unforgettable.

This place is a pearl in southern Iceland. The staff at the restaurant was polite and knowledgable about the items on the menu, the wines, and the locale. This is a change from the usual Icelandic waiter. The food looked and tasted great. The wine list was also very impressive. Aside from my lobster bisque being a little bit too salty, and the price being close to the high end, this was the perfect meal experience. We also stayed at the hotel. The rooms were elegant and clean with a Jacuzzi in the bathroom and a good selection of TV stations. The hot tub was located quite far away though. All in all a very good experience.
