I gave the Hotel Opera 3 stars because the good and bad sort of balanced each other out. First, the good: the building itself is gorgeous — art nouveau with crystal chandeliers in the lobby and green marble steps to enter. The breakfast had many choices, and I have no complaints there. The bathroom was lovely and clean and well-appointed. The location is very close to all modes of public transportation, restaurants, and shops.
Now for the bad: the front desk staff — never in all of my years of extensive travel have I encountered a less caring, more disinterested group of workers. When I checked in, I had to wait for the clerk to finish with a guest who obviously needed very extensive explanations for something. Okay, I can live with that — he was there before me. Then he left and my check in began. The previous guest returned, and the clerk stopped my check in to spend at least 5 — 6 minutes with the guest. I finally received my room key without a welcome or anything of the sort. I went to my room and decided to go exploring. When I asked at the desk about transportation, it appeared that I had requested such a Herculean task that when another guest came up, the attention was immediately diverted away from me. So I left with no answer and no help. After that, I never bothered to ask the front desk for anything and never once did they acknowledge me when I entered or exited the hotel. The bell captain was the only employee who was respectful to me and treated me like I mattered.
Bad — the acoustics. The first night I was there, the water came on in my bathroom — or so I thought. The walls were so paper thin that everything my neighbor did (use the toilet, clear his sinuses, talk, cough, use the water, anything), I could hear as if he were in the room with me. Suffice it to say, iI didn’t sleep much.
Bad — the bedding — The pillows were so soft as to be useless and the coverlet was like a yoga mat inside a fitted sheet. The room temperature was too cool not to use the yoga mat, but in 2 minutes, sweat was produced by the heavy cover. Another reason that I got little sleep.
Bad — room cleanliness — Not only were my sheets not noticeably changed, but the carpet was never vacuumed in the 5 days I stayed. The bathroom was spotless but the room wasn’t.
I would not stay at this hotel again if for no other reason than the front desk staff.
